The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) wishes to warmly extend the opportunity to become a corporate sponsor for “COLLAGE 2014: A LEGACY OF GENEROSITY This year we will be honoring Kirk Clark for contributing and enriching the community of the Rio Grande Valley along with his lifetime of service to IMAS. In its 36th anniversary, Collage is one of the longest running fundraisers and most eagerly anticipated social events of the year. All funds raised at Collage enable the museum to continue creating an inspirational legacy by providing life enhancing art and science exhibitions, educational programs, and cultural events serving to stimulate the imagination of our visitors. IMAS has delighted visitors by featuring the finest art and science exhibitions while providing exceptionally engaging educational programs since its establishment in 1967. IMAS is the only Smithsonian Affiliated museum south of San Antonio and is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM). Over 80,000 people visit IMAS on an annual basis, with half consisting of school children ranging from 4-12 years of age. We continue our community engagement every summer by partnering with the City of McAllen and offering our popular Operation Imagination summer camp providing an additional 800 children with unique, hands-on learning experiences. We seek your support to further our mission of providing excellent world-class exhibitions, educational programming and other cultural events to the Rio Grande Valley that challenge, inspire, and motivate our entire community. A LEGACY OF GENEROSITY: KIRK CLARK COLLAGE 2014 HONOREE
Kirk Clark was born in McAllen, Texas, to Charles and Dorothy Clark. His parents' enthusiastic collecting, and involvement in the contemporary art scene, greatly influenced their son. In 1956, as a ten-year-old boy, Kirk began his artistic journey when he created his first oil painting titled "The Lone Cypress". Clark studied sculpture and drawing in the mid 1960s and graduated from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. His first solo exhibition could not have been held in a more appropriate setting than in the home state of his collegiate Alma Mater and the art Mecca of the Southwest at the Zane-Wheeler Gallery in Taos, New Mexico. His show, "The Atomic Jesus" played host to over 700 attendees the opening night. Since then, Clark has enjoyed exhibitions in venues as exciting as Rome and as remote as Matehuala, Mexico. Kirk Clark has been happily married to Jeri LaMasters for the past 32 years. They are proud parents of their sons Daniel Christopher and Kirk Alexander, and delighted in welcoming his fiancĂŠ Amanda Melvin into their family. Kirk has a son Charlie, a daughter Anne, and his two beautiful grandchildren Ryan and Emily. Kirk Clark has been pivotal funder throughout the lifespan of IMAS. He continues to enlighten IMAS with his art and to promote the museum through educational programming. His significant contributions have been endless. Following in the footsteps of his parents, Kirk Clark is not just a creator of art, but an avid collector, researcher, philanthropist, and community builder. It is through donors and supporters like Kirk Clark that IMAS is able to provide an opportunity for the arts and sciences to thrive within our community. He has served on many Boards like the Public Arts Committee, the McAllen Chamber of Commerce, Good Samaritan, University of Texas-Pan American Arts & Humanities, McAllen Public Library, Valley Land Fund, and the Valley Symphony Orchestra & Chorale. Clark has been named "Man of the Year" by the STC Stars Program, McAllen Chamber of Commerce, the American Diabetes Association, and Good Samaritan. Because of Kirk Clark's benevolent spirit, tireless dedication and passion to serve the arts, humanities, and his community, we at IMAS are honored to name him this year's Collage Legacy of Generosity.
THE LEGACY PROJECT IMAS has a long and illustrious legacy as the premier cultural institution of the Rio Grande Valley. That legacy is the result of the vision and civic commitment of its founders. When the ladies of the Junior League of McAllen conceived the idea of creating a museum over 47 years ago, they too set out on a path to create an intergenerational legacy. As we approach the half century mark, the Board of Trustees and the IMAS staff seek to create a historic document to record the memories of those visionary founders. In furtherance of this mission, we are commencing the Legacy Project. Over the next five years, we will be recording interviews and remembrances of the people who have played important roles in the founding and the development of the International Museum of Art & Science over the last fifty years. For our 50th anniversary, we will produce a documentary film that sets forth the history of the institution and honors the vision and commitment of those who have contributed so much to the civic life of their community and made the noble work of the museum possible. If you know of people who should be included in this endeavor, or have memories and stories of your own that you wish to tell, please contact us so we may include them in this important Legacy Project.
