What if the ants crawling on your counter, the spider in your doorway, or the butterfly in your garden were the size of your car or even larger? What bizarre physical characteristics could you see? And what mindboggling behaviors would you observe when they move? To find out, visit Xtreme BUGS! at IMAS, beginning October 9, 2016 through March 20, 2017. Xtreme BUGS! is a 6,000 squarefoot exhibition featuring over 100 giant bugs, including 22 larger-than-life animatronic bugs, in vibrant, naturalistic habitats. Enveloped in the larger-than-life landscape of Xtreme BUGS!, visitors will be transported into a vivid, dynamic, and awe-inspiring new environment. There’s a fluttering monarch butterfly, a ladybug, a line of marching ants, an orchid mantis, stinkbugs, spiders, honeybees, and more.
Guests are invited to walk through the lens of a bug’s eye and shift their perspective on the fascinating creatures sharing our ecosystem. “This exhibition has interactive activities for all ages,” says Julie Johnson, IMAS President.

Architecture of the Rio Grande Valley by local photographer Deval "Pino" Shah
November 12, 2016 to April 10, 2017
Architecture of the Rio Grande Valley: A Visual Journey will be on display from November 12, 2016 to April 10, 2017 in the Welcome Pavilion at IMAS. The 30 photographs selected from a forthcoming book, Architecture of the Rio Grande Valley: Vol. I, celebrate architecture that reflects the region, its craftsmen, its cultures and its climate over the past 160 years. Photographer Deval “Pino” Shah has captured

the significant architecture of the four border counties and created a visual perspective of the Valley focused on traditions and innovations, persistence, and adaptations. On Saturday, November 12, Shah will talk about Architecture of the Rio Grande Valley at 3 P.M. in the Welcome Pavilion at IMAS. On Sunday, November 13, Shah will conduct a photography workshop
from 2-4 P.M., which will include a discussion of cameras (smartphone and/or dslr), lenses, shooting in RAW, tripods, and composition basics.
Mansfield
November 26, 2016 - February 12, 2017 In 2003, the San Francisco psychedelic artist Mansfield donated 38 art works, record albums, and sheet music to IMAS. A musician as well as an artist, Mansfield (born Alan Perkins) developed a technique of collage that blended silkscreen, airbrush, and photography. Representing the heyday of the west coast Cultural Revolution, these surrealist images are really far out! The mid-1960s was one of the most tumultuous and exciting periods of the twentieth century. It also saw San Francisco emerge as a creative haven for an international countercultural movement. Mansfield played a central role in the scene, hosting artists, poets, and musicians at his home on Surrey Street. In the late 1970s, Mansfield began to create new work with highly glossy pop images and intense colors, culminating in an image of King Tut that gained fame as the cover for the ZZ Top album Sleeping Bag. The original works in the IMAS collection feature fantastical scenes of outer space, references to the Cold War, sexy advertising techniques, and icons of the Tutankhamen culture touring the U.S. The result is a brilliant amalgamation of our country’s culture at that time.

The challenge for this year’s Christmas Tree Forest is to celebrate something that has happened in the last 50 years of the museum’s existence. It could be cultural— pop stars, pop songs, significant movies or T.V. Series, games, books, fashion. It could be scientific—space exploration, medical breakthroughs, inventions, transportation. It could be social—ecology and environment, sport, world, national or local events or trends. Please choose a theme that is in keeping with the Christmas message of peace and goodwill to all. End your weekend with our highly-anticipated Day of the Dead Festival on Sunday, October 30th. Day of the Dead is a festive time of remembrance, honoring deceased relatives through the decoration of celebratory memorial altars. Keeping with the rich cultural traditions of Day of the Dead Festival, IMAS is proud to host a number of altars created by members of our community including those made by schools, organizations, local artists and families. Each altar will honor the work of a noted Latino artist. In addition, IMAS’s Day of the Dead Festival will feature local artist and artisan stalls, traditional foods, sugar skull making workshops, paper flower and papel picado activites, guest lectures, folklorico, and a dress like a Catrina Contest. Weekend passes available at a discounted rate: $10/ Adult; $8/Senior or Student w/ID; $6/Child (4-12). Individual day passes are also available at our general admission rate. Does not include X-treme BUGS exhibition.

Join us in one of IMAS’s most iconic traditions, Gingerbread House Workshops! Get creative with your family in friends this winter as you decorate your own unique gingerbread house! Utilizing principles of art and engineering, learn about the ways to make your structure stand tall while also creating a beautiful work of art! Gingerbread House Workshops

This November 5, we will be exploring the Art of Embroidery as we take a close-up look at our newest quilt exhibition, Radical Elements. Try your hand at a variety of embroidery techniques and create a piece to take home! December 3, take a trip down memory lane as we explore “Collections and Recollections.” Take a look at pieces from our permanent exhibit and learn how we pull it all together, between cataloging, exhibiting, and more! Create your own mini-collection during our exciting hands-on workshop. Senior Saturday events occur on the first Saturday of every month from 10:00am-11:30am. Workshops are included in general admission. Visitors must be 55+, children and grandchildren are welcome. run Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays throughout the month of December. Is your young artist or scientist looking for fun and exciting activities to do during their Winter Break? Are you looking for something for them to do while you are at work or out shopping? Have your child join us as we dive in to the world of bugs during our exciting new Winter Camps running from December 26-30 from 9am-3pm.Participants will take a close up look at the insects and arachnids that call IMAS home while also journeying through our newest exhibit, Xtreme Bugs! With handson art and science activities every day, your young learner will enjoy a unique, engaging experience! Join us for a day or for the whole week! VOLUNTEERING AT IMAS IMAS welcomes all of our new interns and volunteers. During the months of August and September several students from the University of Texas Rio Gran Valley and South Texas Collage have joined our Volunteer and Internship Program for the Fall semester. Interns and Volunteers have been assigned to different positions in our museum, where they love what they do. They are involved in important projects with Marketing, Visitor Services, Education and the Curatorial Department. Giving tours through the Art Galleries, presentations in SOS, assisting visitors in the Art Studio, creating flyers and new designs for events, and taking care of our animal ambassadors.
Congratulations to our volunteers of the month Carlos and Jeremiah! Carlos Garcia Patlan have been helping and attending to our visitors in a very diligent way inside the BioZone Lab! Jeremiah Aleman presents our SOS programs.

IN THE COMMUNITY IMAS Outreach has been able to reach over 1200 people this Fall!
We would like to thank the City of South Padre Island for inviting us to the RGV Hunters & Fishing Expo and allowing us to inform the community about environmental cleanup; UTRGV for inviting us to participate in HESTEC's Educator Day and Community Day; as well as PalmFest and Estero Llano Grade State Park for exploring the world of Xtreme Bugs with us. We have also been teaming up with Renée Jamar, Child Life Specialist
for the Edinburg Children’s Hospital, to contribute biweekly art and science activities through December. We want to provide patients and their families a fun, educational, experience during their most stressful times. It gives the patients a sense of normalcy and a much needed distraction. Our newest outreach program “IMAS Journey’s” is now on tour at a location near you! Have slimey fun with our “State’s of Matter”

VISITOR SERVICE MANAGER CORNER The variety of cultural enrichment programs, workshops, lectures, festivals and exhibits offered at IMAS have attracted the community at large, and as a result has turned out to be very successful and rewarding. Through the attendance of these events, our members and visitors have broaden their horizons and gain unique insights into their own communities as well as a broader global perspective of our world’s diverse cultures. In turn, we have turned many of those visits into annual memberships. Our home school programs have been very successful. Parents of home school students have been very pleased with our creative hands on projects, giving kids the opportunity they need to develop important life skills such as problem solving and working in groups. The classes incorporate STEAM subjects. In addition, this is a new demographic of visitors who are
now weekly visitors and the majority have become IMAS members. IMAS joined ASTC! All memberships include free general admission into Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) Travel Passport Program. ASTC members include not only science centers and museums, but also nature centers, aquariums, planetarium’s, zoo’s, botanical gardens, space theatres and natural history and children’s museums nationally and worldwide. We had a total of 117 visitors from other cities and states use their ASTC affiliate membership to visit IMAS this summer.

Sacred Visions: Stained Glass Windows moves to new home The twenty enchanting stained glass windows in the exhibition titled Sacred Visions: Stained Glass Windows from the collection of Dr. Lawrence and Mrs. Esperanza Gelman on display at IMAS will be closing on December 31, 2016. We invite everyone to see this beautiful
exhibition before it is too late. This is a second in a series of stained glass that has been on exhibition at IMAS. We are thrilled to have met people from outside Rio Grande Valley that came just to see the Sacred Visions: Stained Glass Windows made by Louis Comfort Tiffany Studios. This is also a favorite for our local community and schools.
