From the Director As many of you already know, the museum is currently preparing for a leadership transition, in search of its next President & Executive Director beginning in January 2019. I want to thank each of our members, the IMAS Board of Trustees, the City of McAllen, our patrons, donors, staff, volunteers as well as the many generous individuals and Serena Pandos PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR businesses who have supported the IMAS over the many years, in service to our community. It has been an honor to serve you, our members and our community. The Board of Trustees is diligently working to find the perfect match for its next President & Executive Director. I have appointed Adrian De Anda who is our current Director of Finance to serve as the museum’s Interim Operations Director. The museum is positioned well for continued excellence in service to our community. I have full faith and confidence that this transition will be a good one, especially given the Board’s diligence, the staff ’s passion for our mission, and your continued support. Science On a Sphere is back! “Science On a Sphere,� also known as SOS, is a revolutionary, state-of-the-art exhibit designed by the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to illustrate planetary and celestial systems like never before. SOS is a unique and captivating educational tool that is used in science museums, visitor centers, zoos, aquariums, laboratories, and schools around the world. Educator-led presentations take place every Tuesday through Saturday in the IMAS Theater, featuring stunning images from the Hubble Space Telescope, orbital satellites, space probes and other NASA sources shown on a three-dimensional, six-foot-wide sphere. The Science On the Sphere exhibit was fully refurbished and reopened to the public in November 2018, thanks to the generous support of Wells Fargo Bank and Mr. Bill Ranganath.

Digital StarLab Planetarium
Rio Sendero
Imagine looking up and seeing the same night sky Galileo saw in the early 1600s when he discovered thousands of stars, the Milky Way. Or picture yourself landing on the rocky, red surface of Mars. This and more is possible with the Digital StarLab Planetarium, an augmented experience that takes you on out-of-this-world adventures.
A walk through the International Museum of Art & Science grounds looks and feels different because the IMAS Sculpture Garden underwent a beautification. With a generous donation of material from Southern Stone, LLC, the walkway upgraded to river rocks and is titled Rio Sendero (River Trail). Anibal Perez of ER Sprinklers & Lawn installed new grass, new irrigation and preened the gardens and stone. In carrying the theme throughout the museum, Rio Sendero is a permanent exhibit now flowing through the sculpture garden.
We are beyond excited to announce the museum currently offers the StarLab Planetarium experience to the public! Nearly 2,000 visiting students have observed the spectacular display during guided group tours. Presented by an IMAS educator, blast throughout the solar system during hourly planetarium shows daily from Tuesday through Sunday.

Symphony of Color
Mexican & Latin American
Symphony of Color is comprised of a collection of over 40 musical instruments that have been decorated with a beaded spectrum of colors by artisans from the Wixárika community, also known as Huicholes. Each musical instrument is a depiction of the Wixárika culture and art and is deeply embedded with their beliefs.
As a pillar of the art community in McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley, the IMAS always focuses on its mission to preserve, expand and display its permanent art and science collections. The Mexican and Latin American Folk Art Collection connects traditional and contemporary folk art forms evolving around regions of Central and South America. Over the course of its lifetime, the IMAS has expanded its permanent collection to over several thousand items, a large portion of which are pieces of significance with Mexican and Latin American roots.
The Hermes Music Foundation supports the Wixárika community by employing the Wixárika artists, selling the instruments and returning the funds to the Wixárika community.

The exhibition is on loan and organized by the Hermes Music Foundation through the support of the Secretaria de Cultura en México and the Festival de Música Contemporánea para un Mundo Mejor.
The vision of the exhibition helps to fulfill the museum’s mission to promote a deeper appreciation of the permanent collection by developing connection between traditional and contemporary arts in Central and South American cultures. The collection was made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and The Raul Tijerina Jr. Foundation.

Recent Acquisitions Behind any museum’s exhibit is a story of acquisition. Pieces in each collection on display may have been borrowed, donated, curated, or selected and organized from a private institution, artist or another organization. Earlier this year, the Blanton Museum of Art formed a Texas Consortium of Museums to receive 500 unrestricted gifts of art. The IMAS was selected and received over 30 contemporary artworks. A portion of these gifts and others from the IMAS permanent collection are presented in Recent Aquisitions, in the Cardenas Gallery. The exhibit features over a dozen artists in a mixed media collection including oil on canvas, acrylic, ceramic, ink, photography, metal sculpture, blown glass, and silkscreen. Among them is an original blown glass piece by Dale Chihuly, May Green Basket.

Clean Water Here The exhibit features 13 award-winning photographs and educational content that describe the world’s complex water challenges, specifically focusing on issues surrounding safe drinking water. The exhibit first debuted at the United Nations headquarters in New York City on UN World Water Day, March 22, 2018, in support of the Water Action Decade, which promoted the idea that access to safe drinking water and sanitation are human rights central to all people everywhere. “Safe drinking water is critical to ending poverty, but it is a huge challenge,” said Lani Dolifka, the creator of Clean Water Here. “We want people to get a better understanding of the challenges, so they become agents of change in their own communities.”

April 6, 2019 The 11th Annual Brew-seum takes place the day before National Beer Day, on Saturday, April 6, 2019. This event provides a unique after-hours experience at the museum for adults aged 21 and over, featuring delicious food from local restaurants, a wide selection of craft beers, and live entertainment. Potential vendors, please do not miss your opportunity to participate in the largest beer festival in the Rio Grande Valley. There is no participation fee and is a chance to expand your restaurant's public radar. For any questions contact our Development Coordinator at brewseum@theimasonline.com
Brew-seum supports the International Museum of Art & Science and its vision to enhance the overall quality of life for all members of the community through artistic and scientific enlightenment. Workshops & Education Every month the IMAS offers art workshops for all ages. Register your little artist for Youth Art Classes on the last Sunday of each month from 1:00–2:30 PM. Learn new art skills during our Adult Art Classes on the first Tuesday of each month from 6:30–8:00 PM. January through March we welcome Winter Texans to every third Saturday from 10:00–11:30 AM. Workshops are perfect for beginner to intermediate artists. All supplies are included.

SciFi Adventures Spring Break Camps
Experience the world of science-fiction at the IMAS during spring break! Camp sessions feature daily hands-on art and science activities and demonstrations. Participants will direct their own stop-motion short film, experiment with special FX makeup, create Minecraft art, learn about parapsychology, explore future space travel and more. Spring camps are provided for grades 1st−6th and will run March 12–15, 2019, from 9:00 AM–3:00 PM. Before and after care will be available. Afternoon snacks are provided, but please bring a sack lunch. Prices start at $45 per day or $150 a week.

World Water Day Celebration In honor of World Water Day on March 22, join us Saturday, March 23 from 10:00 AM–4:00 PM for a day filled with water activities and presentations. Make a splash at the water festival stations as you learn about water testing, clean up an oil spill, make a water cycle in a bag, and more. Explore the impact of water from hurricanes to droughts during Science On a Sphere presentations. Lastly, discover the importance of water and water conservation by taking the water pledge. World Water Day Celebration is brought to the IMAS in partnership with the McAllen Public Utility.
