doing in 1967? ˮ
It was the year of the World’s first heart transplant, the first ATM, NASA launched Lunar Orbiter 3, gas was 33 cents a gallon, the first Rolling Stones Magazine was published, the Beatles released Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and in the Rio Grande Valley town of McAllen the McAllen International Museum was founded on June 2 through the efforts of the Women’s Junior Service League and the McAllen City Commission. The McAllen International Museum started operations and opened their doors on October 26, 1969 in a 5,000 sq. ft. building. During this time the museum presented and showcased collections in art, science and history. The museum staff and Board of Trustees made annual acquisitions to collect Mexican folk art and contemporary art of the region. In addition to art acquisitions, the museum also collected scientific specimens of rocks, minerals, and sea life including coral and shells. Fast forward to 1974 when the McAllen citizens voted to construct a new 21, 000 sq. ft. building at its present location on Nolana

Ave. through a city bond. The Board of Trustees raised $400,000 for new exhibits, furnishings and landscaping. Jump ahead to 1982 when the Board of Trustees narrowed the focus of the museum to the arts and sciences and in 2001 an additional building was added and the name changed to the International Museum of Art & Science. Today the International Museum of Art & Science has 50,000 sq. ft. of exhibition, programming and outside sculpture and play space. The museum hosts over 70,000 visitors a year. The International Museum of Art & Science is the largest art and science museum in the Rio Grande Valley. I want to personally invite you to take part in the many activities we have planned for our 50th Anniversary. Each month we have a special program with our kickoff beginning in January. McAllen residents have supported us throughout our history. As a way to give back to McAllen residents we are offering free general admission from Jan. 8-16, 2017 for all McAllen residents. On February 19, we will be helping those in need on our 50 years, 50 pounds of Food Day.

February 19th is the 50th day of 2017. It is the 50th day of our 50th year so we are collecting 50 lbs. of food to give to the RGV Food Bank. We will collect canned goods or non-perishable food items. Each person to bring in one of these will receive one free general admission ticket (one ticket/person). These are just the first of many events. We will be celebrating our 50th Anniversary with a huge celebration on our Founder’s Day June 2. We hope that you will join us and celebrate with us at one or more of our events this year.
EARLIEST PERMANENT COLLECTION The first objects to enter the IMAS collection. The International Museum of Art & Science permanent collection began with the institution’s founding in 1967 through numerous gifts from local donors. Since its inception, the collection has grown to include over 2,000 natural history and geologic specimens and 4,500 folk art and textile objects as well as the 1,500 fine art works. The first objects to enter the IMAS collection consisted of shells, mollusks, rocks and minerals. In 1970 Dr. McKee and Grace Caton donated over 300 minerals as well as an important group of European paintings. The minerals in the Caton gift include semiprecious stones such as opal, garnet, tourmaline and topaz. Representing geologic specimens found throughout North and South America, the donation was a wonderful foundation for a new science collection. This milky blue mineral shown from the Caton collection is a celestite in its crystalline structure from Ontario, Canada. Celestite (strontium sulphate) is used in fireworks because of its ability to burn with a bright red flame. Strontium, in the form of celestite, is also widely used to manufacture glass for use in video displays like television sets.
VOLUNTEERING AT IMAS Volunteer Appreciation Day at IMAS!
Our volunteers celebrated their volunteer appreciation day at IMAS. During this appreciation day a painting party was held for them, and the artist, Allyssa Yamaguchi, led the class taking them step by step until the painting "Starry Night" by Van Gogh was completed. They shared some food and had fun painting. We are recruiting additional volunteers and interns for different departments. Join our team as a volunteer or intern and learn new skills, have fun, and explore how a museum works. Volunteers can choose from available positions depending on field of interest & availability. IMAS 50TH ANNIVERSARY MONTHLY ACTIVITIES Our anniversary plans are showcasing this incredible milestone – with special activities, programs, events, exhibitions, and a 50th Anniversary Gala. We hope you will join us as we celebrate our 50 years of service to the Rio Grande Valley.
SPECIAL THANKS TO MCALLEN RESIDENTS January 8 – 16, 2017: Our celebration kicks off January 8 – 16 with Free General Admission for McAllen residents. This is our way to thank the residents of McAllen for their support over the last 50 years. CHILDREN’S GALA February 18, 2017: Join us for our new, annual Children’s Gala: Mermaids & Pirates. This new event gives families the opportunity to go to a fancy ball while still enjoying family fun. 50 YEARS 50 POUNDS OF FOOD February 19, 2017: February 19th will be the 50th day of 2017, so to celebrate we are collecting 50 pounds of food. All donations will go to the RGV Food Bank. Each person in your family will enjoy free admission when you bring in a canned good or non-perishable items. One can or non-perishable food item is required per person. Note: offer does not apply for group entrance. 50 YEARS OF FASHION PRESENTED BY THE IMAS GUILD March 4, 2017: A catwalk show designed for stylish women who don’t want to be “invisible” -- this annual show sponsored by the IMAS Guild proves that it’s about style, not age. Location: McAllen Creative Incubator. Check our website for more details. BREW-SEUM CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL April 8, 2017: Join us as we celebrate our 9th annual Brew-seum Craft Beer Festival, in conjunction with museum’s 50th birthday, featuring at least 50 different brews, local food venues and live entertainment. EXTREME DEEP: MISSION TO THE ABYSS May 20, 2017: This exhibition depicts the mysteries of the ocean’s greatest depths. See newly discovered life forms, thermal vents, close-up views of deep-sea submersibles, and shipwrecks, including the Titanic. FOUNDER’S DAY CELEBRATION June 2, 2017: On this day in 1967, Junior Service League Women officially founded the McAllen International Museum (MIM). We will have activities, including stories and games, music, food, and community fellowship. It is a time set aside for those with deep roots at the museum and for those who have only been here for a little while to join together and celebrate the extraordinary story of those who came before us to make this place so special. The Founder’s Day Celebration is an event for the whole family.
INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION July 3, 2017: Join us for hands-on fun as we explain the science of fireworks, set off rockets, explode paints, and much more. 50 YEAR RETROSPECTIVE OF EDWARD E. NICHOLS Aug. 24 to Jan. 7, 2018: Painter Edward Nichols, who passed away in 2016, taught generations of South Texas artists as a professor at the University of Texas Pan American (now UTRGV). This exhibition includes works from several museum and private collections demonstrating Nichols’ extensive versatility in watercolor, acrylic, and lithography, which he used to depict the region’s natural beauty. 50 YEARS: THE HISTORY OF IMAS Sept. 21 to Feb. 28, 2018: This exhibition will explore the history of the museum, its growth, and a selection of memorable moments from the exhibitions, programs, collections, and projects organized during the past 50 years. 50TH ANNIVERSARY GALA-COLLAGE September 23, 2017: Join IMAS as it celebrates its 50th Anniversary with a black-tie Gala. The Gala will present a unique opportunity to celebrate in style with live music and food from an iconic restaurant. Our golden anniversary will take a nostalgic look back at key moments in our history. VINTAGE CLOTHING NIGHT October, 2017: Fall back in time to 1967 with games, music, and authentic 1960’s attire. This will be an evening for adults to get “groovy.” GIVING THANKS TO THE VALLEY VETERANS November 11, 2017: In celebration of Veteran’s Day, all veterans and a guest will receive free admission to IMAS. NOEL NIGHT December 8, 2017: Join us for Noel Night from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. Take a stroll through the Christmas Tree Forest, make a keepsake ornament, join us for seasonal Karaoke, and learn more about the celebrations of other cultures during this last month of the year!

Gloria Garfinkel: Origami Interpretations January 21 to April 2, 2017 The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) is pleased to present Gloria Garfinkel: Origami Interpretations, an exhibition of twenty-nine vibrant paintings, sculptures and prints by the New York-based artist on display in the Clark Gallery at IMAS from January 21 through April 2, 2017. The exhibition features pieces from several of Garfinkel’s series, including Gingko Kimono, collaged etchings from the late 1980s; paintings inspired by the obi or Japanese sash; etchings from the Kiku (Chrysanthemum) series; Kado woodcut prints, Hanabi maquettes; and aluminum Flip paintings. Garfinkel draws inspiration from her extensive international travel and her keen interest in science and mathematics. Her art is an immersion in vibrant bursts of color and vivid patterning, embedded in animated geometry. The forms are clear and strong, but the structures that they create are surprising
and changeable, unfolding in unpredictable permutations. The works, produced in the late 20th century, accentuate the artist’s dramatic intellectual and emotional interconnection, inspired by Japanese designs and origami forms. The most distinctive body of work presented in Gloria Garfinkel: Origami Interpretations consists of striped wall panels, fabricated in aluminum, with inset sections that rotate when manipulated by the viewer. In Seven Circles (2008), seven striped and checkered
circles, in pastel and non-primary colors, tumble across a wall. Some circles bunch up into each other more than others, and two or three can be turned by the viewer to push the movement of the sequence along. Garfinkel has accommodated patterning to the optical potential of moving discs by processing patterns through mathematics, the basis of most of her pattern work. Masks have a long and rich history in cultures around the world, and those traditions in Mexico are particularly rich and vibrant. Fortunately, for the International Museum of Art & Science, Dr. David and Bernice Harner donated
a collection of Mexican masks to the IMAS Permanent Collection in 1986. These hammered copper masks were created in Altamirano and La Parota in the southwestern Mexican state of Guerrero. Long a center of mask making, this region

began to produce traditional masks for the tourist trade around the 1970s. Based on old forms of masks used in traditional festival dances, these masks combine lightweight copper metal plates with delicate texture and colorful paint. The resulting masks are both elegant and whimsical. The Bearded Man, or El Barbón, may come from the Dance of the Marquis, one of many dances originating in Colonial Spanish efforts to convert Mexicans to Catholicism. The deer on the man’s forehead may refer to the animal sacred to the Yaqui and Mayo tribes. The tortuga or tortoise mask is carefully hammered to create the pattern of a shell with a beautifully colored human or spirit face in the center.

IMAS CHILDREN’S BALL: PIRATES AND MERMAIDS February 18th, 2017
IMAS invites you and your child to take a journey on the high seas as the family takes part in our first annual Children’s Ball on February 18, 2017 from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. at IMAS. This year’s theme, Pirates and Mermaids, will give families the opportunity to enjoy an abundance of hands-on fun, and dancing that will inspire and engage your child. Dress in your finest or a themed costume as you and your family enjoy a feast fit for a pirate or mermaid. After dinner, dance the night away, take part in our fun-filled underwater games room, create your very own pirate hat or mermaid crown, and make your own ocean slime and more. This event is sure to be a hit among children. As a fundraising event, proceeds will help IMAS continue to inspire the youth and adults in our community with exciting and educational programs, exhibitions, and more.
