Throughout the year, IMAS presents a broad range of exhibitions on science and art topics, many traveling from national and international museums, universities, and artists along with displays of our own permanent collection. With a diverse audience of children and adults, we aim to offer exhibitions that are educational, inspiring, and entertaining. Don’t miss the new exhibitions opening in the next few months!
XTreme BUGS!
Xtreme BUGS! Invade IMAS!
What if the ants crawling on your counter, the spider in your doorway, or the butterfly in your garden were the size of your car or even larger? What bizarre physical characteristics could you see? And what mindboggling behaviors would you observe when they move? To find out, visit Xtreme BUGS! at IMAS, beginning October 9, 2016 through March 20, 2017. Xtreme BUGS! is a 6,000 squarefoot exhibition featuring over

100 giant bugs, including 22 larger-than-life animatronic bugs, in vibrant, naturalistic habitats. Enveloped in the larger-than-life landscape of Xtreme BUGS!, visitors will be transported into a vivid, dynamic, and awe-inspiring new environment. There’s a fluttering monarch butterfly, a ladybug, a line of marching ants, an orchid mantis,
stinkbugs, spiders, honeybees, and more. Guests are invited to walk through the lens of a bug’s eye and shift their perspective on the fascinating creatures sharing our ecosystem. “This exhibition has interactive activities for all ages,” says Julie Johnson, IMAS President.

Radical Elements
Stitching together chemistry and quilting to challenge tradition. Soft materials meet hard science in Radical Elements, an exhibition at IMAS from September 24, 2016 to January 8, 2017. Featuring 40 contemporary art quilts, each work is inspired by a different element from the periodic table, from arsenic to hydrogen to platinum. Quilt artists explore the elements in many ways, ranging from their industrial uses to personal memories associated with them. The artists in Radical Elements were chosen from an international pool of members of the non-profit organization Studio Art Quilt Associates. The quilters were challenged to represent their favorite element on a quilt. Each of the selected artists had to adhere to the definition of new art quilts, using alternative materials as the quilt’s layers. These layers also had to be fastened together by some innovative method. Indeed, very few of the quilts on display use much of the traditional supplies of fabric, thread, and batting. Materials range from duct tape and aluminum foil to keyboard keys and dining utensils. Their inspirations came from anything relating to the element, whether it is a play on the name, its color, or the products made from it. The wild array of representational and abstract quilts in Radical Elements explore the intersection of art and science in brilliant form.
Julie Speed:Undertoad Worth a Closer Look
The painstakingly crafted details in the work of Texas artist Julie Speed call for close inspection. Working with gouache, collage, and etching, Speed creates bizarre, mysterious scenes where signs of our mortality persistently lurk. This dark reality underlies a decade’s work from 2004-2015 in the exhibition Undertoad, on display at IMAS from August 27 to November 3, 2016. In the title work from 2015, Speed combines gouache and collage in a leafless, eerie tree hung with collaged elements including fans, a skull, and a toad among the roots. Collage is a particularly important component of her work, created with found and printed papers gathered over decades and carefully placed to create deceptively simple compositions.
With a keen sense of the absurd, Speed ponders the big questions— the role of religion, isolation and longing, sexuality, sin, and guilt—with a sly, sometimes dark, sense of humor and a steadfast refusal to offer the viewer any tidy resolutions. It is the emphatically open-ended and omnivorous nature of her work, combining anxiety, erotica, and violence with the subversive power of beauty that puts Speed in the vanguard of a return to figurative painting in contemporary art.

Julie Speed: Undertoad is organized by Flatbed Press, Austin, and Ruiz-Healy Art, San Antonio. A catalogue of the exhibition with essay by Lyle W. Williams, Curator of Prints and Drawings at The McNay Art Museum, will be available.

VOLUNTEERING AT IMAS IMAS thanks all the volunteers we had during the Summer of 2016. IMAS wants to thank of all the volunteers we had during the Summer of 2016, a total of 47 volunteers made the realization of several projects possible. Jeremiah Aleman is our first volunteer giving presentations in our Science on a Sphere Theater and he is doing great! IN THE COMMUNITY IMAS Outreach was able to reach over 600 people with our first ever Summer Library Programs and Community Outreaches.
We would like to thank the Dustin M Sekula Memorial Library, San Juan City Library, McAllen North Rotary Club, St. Marks Preschool, Harlingen Public Library, Lark Library, and La Plaza Mall for allowing us to share art and science activities this summer.
We also spent the summer creating fun, new, and exciting programs for Fall 2016! You will now be able to bring IMAS to you with an interactive Art and Science show, Animal Presentations, HEB Portable Planetarium Presentations and workshops for all ages across the Rio Grande Valley.
