The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) was established on June 2, 1967 through the efforts of the Junior League of McAllen.

IMAS is a Smithsonian Affiliate, and is fully accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. IMAS is the premier art and science museum of South Texas and contains over 50,000 square feet of exhibit space.

The IMAS galleries host a number of revolving art and science exhibits each year. The museum provides a unique opportunity for visitors to participate in hands-on science exhibits and to be engaged by original works of art while encouraging creativity and innovation. IMAS’ Permanent Collection includes over 8,000 artifacts in Folk Art, Fine Art, Decorative Art and a modest Geological Collection. In addition to our permanent collection, we have 178 artifacts in our teaching collection that we use for hands-on interaction in the museum.

IMAS is one of three museums in the U.S. to have a complete “Suite of Imaginary Portraits“ series by Pablo Picasso in its permanent collection.

Dear Friends, Whether you’re reading this letter as a patron, donor or volunteer, the International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) thanks you for giving us an opportunity to Inspire for another year. As you will see in the coming pages, we celebrated our 46th anniversary with a jam-packed calendar of art and science exploration.

In almost every corner throughout our building to around the city, the passionate IMAS staff (even our newest Science Lab volunteer Gobi, a leopard gecko) encouraged visitors to Think, Discover, Experience and Create with exhibitions, programs, workshops, summer camps, and much more. Some highlights for the year (October 1, 2013 to September 30, 2014) included:

Like an artist’s brush, we make impactful marks throughout the region and beyond by instilling a deeper understanding and appreciation of arts and sciences with outstanding exhibitions, cultural events and educational programs. In addition, our ability to preserve, expand and display the museum’s permanent art and science collections strengthens the community.

IMAS will continue to engage all ages with program favorites like Operation Imagination summer camps, Science On a Sphere presentations and Senior Saturdays. Plus, new outreach programs extending beyond our walls will be magnets drawing visitors to the museum. We’ll build upon our commitments with satellite spaces, local artist exhibitions and the many quality events offered annually.

Thank you once again (because we can never say it enough) for giving us the ability to Inspire. The combined support of individuals, corporations and foundations enables us to further our mission of providing excellent, world-class art and science exhibitions, programming and cultural events to the Rio Grande Valley that challenge audiences to Think, Discover, Experience and Create the world around them.

“Quantics: The Art & Science of Sebastian” in Clark Gallery

THINK. Edgar Degas once said “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” This is what IMAS did with international significance, state-wide impact, and local prominence. Twenty art exhibitions featuring more than 100 artists inspired appreciation at both the museum and satellite locations during the 2013-2014 fiscal year. Here are a few highlights.

LOCALLY…

For more than 30 years, IMAS has hosted the Christmas Tree Forest competition and exhibit in the Welcome Pavilion. It is one of the 3

only exhibits totally derived from community input and contribution, and each year some of Rio Grande Valley’s most creative talent brings this annual tradition to life. 2013 was no exception! With the theme A Green Christmas, schools, non-profits, and businesses decorated 30 Christmas trees with recycled ornaments – everything from fast food wrappers to old CDs, soda bottles, plastic, Styrofoam cups and even old high heel pointed toed shoes. The IMAS Guild, producers of the holiday masterpiece, awarded groups from pre-school to adult for their ingenuity and creative spirit.

REGIONALLY…

From September 26, 2013 to January 12, 2014, IMAS united once again with 80 art organizations and artist collectives as part of the Texas Biennial – the longest-running state biennial in the U.S. – to celebrate the excellence and diversity of regional, contemporary art with Arte de la Frontera II. The invitational melded art with dialogue by featuring works of art from 10 local artists and a series of panel discussions. Both current and previous participating artists, museum staff, education directors and media converged on topics ranging from the commonality of themes in each other’s works to the effect of art in the state, education and information.

BY THE NUMBERS

Ten regional artists were invited to participate in Arte de la Frontera II in association with the 2013 Texas Biennial. During its short run, 7,937 visitors were taken on a journey of the region’s unique and distinct artists.

INTERNATIONALLY…

Seizing upon a world-renowned opportunity, IMAS brought sculptor Enrique Carbajal, better known as Sebastian, to McAllen with Quantics: The Art and Science of Sebastian. This exhibition, on display October 10, 2013 - March 2, 2014, expertly demonstrated the fusion between art and science. Expanding upon the originality of 20 small-scale sculptures, nine outdoor sculptures, and 15 digital impressions generated by geometry and quantum physics, the museum introduced symmetry, microscopy and nanotechnology to its galleries, Discovery Pavilion, Science On a Sphere Theatre, and even on the grounds. Plus, Sebastian’s seven Sculptural Vision sculptures — the artist’s largest public art display to date — stationed at key locations throughout the city until October 2015 guaranteed larger-than-life impressions.

BY THE NUMBERS

DISCOVER.

The new permanent exhibit DigiWall at IMAS is one of only six located in the United States.

Not many Texans get to go on excavation hunts, so IMAS transformed the Discovery Pavilion into the largest restoration of an extinct ecosystem ever created from June 8 to September 7, 2014. With the special exhibit Be the Dinosaur, our visitors uncovered some of the world’s greatest paleontological mysteries and met artificially intelligent, yet scientifically accurate, dinosaurs with muscle, nervous, sensory and digestive systems. Supplementing the exhibit were objects from the permanent collection of IMAS, including shells and fossils of plants, animals and other organisms.

The reveal of DigiWall marked another opening of a permanent exhibit at IMAS. Every peg on the 21-by-9-foot interactive wall lights up with sound and music to create a video game atmosphere while each grip responds to touch. Imported from Sweden, the DigiWall at the IMAS is one of six in the United States.

EXPERIENCE. No one ever needs a specific reason to visit IMAS, yet our 2013-2014 line-up of activities targeted everyone with a myriad of opportunities to have fun. From guided tours topped off with coffee on Senior Saturdays to Family Fun Night Activities offered every Thursday evening for children and their parents, we catered to all ages. Operation Imagination summer camps entertained 2,597 children ages 4-13, while 16 opening receptions welcomed adults appreciating new art exhibitions. Our new IMAS Culture Series celebrated the many cultures of the Rio Grande Valley four times a year with all-day festivals, and we had a blast 7

in the summer months at our Stars & Skies Mysteries parties with telescopes on the front lawn for exploring the night sky, Science On a Sphere and UTPA planetarium presentations and science experiments in the museum.

Plus, our love for art and science went beyond just admission as we celebrated 68 booked birthday parties on-site and shared our space with 1,368 guests from our facility rentals. Yes, we can easily say there was something new to experience with IMAS every week.

CREATE. Everyone is like Picasso creating masterpieces and memories inside the Ann Moore Art Studio, a new IMAS space dedicated to teaching art. Daily projects such as printmaking, sketching, finger painting and crafting often tied in with the museum’s current exhibitions. Plus, special events like Art After Dark provided more opportunities to learn from professional artists.

INSPIRE. From everyday interaction to special events, so many people associated with IMAS make the word Inspire come alive.

For example, the IMAS Guild has been supporting the museum since 1970 with the mission of providing funds for educational/ exhibit programming. In 2013-2014, the Guild supported, the IMAS Cultural Series, Collage, and repairs to our vault by raising funds through successful events like the annual rummage sale, and A Splash of Spring luncheon and style show.

Inspiration overflows through volunteers who help enhance our exhibits, assist us with clerical work and host special events. More than 61 volunteers dedicated 3,795 hours of their time to promote a deeper appreciation of the arts and sciences.

We strive to inspire the Rio Grande Valley community with accessibility for all, especially those who might not otherwise be able to afford it. In 2013-2014, IMAS offered 50 Family Fun Nights with reduced admission, extended hours, and art and

science projects at no cost. More than 65 pieces of art were displayed to the public at our satellite locations – the McAllen Public Library and Art District Business Center.

Our donors are key to making this possible, and our special events, Collage and Brew-Seum Craft Beer Week are premiere fundraisers making this impact. These annual events, Collage celebrating 36 years and A Night at the Brew-Seum with six years, raised more than $300,000 for IMAS enabling the museum to continue its inspirational legacy of providing life enhancing art and science exhibitions, educational programs, and cultural events that inspire our visitors to Think, Discover, Experience and Create.

The Ann Moore Art Studio opened on May 28, 2014, as a gift from the Godinez Family honoring Ann Moore’s dedication to the arts and culture of the Rio Grande Valley.
