The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) wishes to warmly extend the opportunity to become a sponsor for COLLAGE 2016: A LEGACY OF DISCOVERY. This year we will be honoring Dr. John Gerling, Arthur Hughes, and Bill Ranganath for contributing and enriching the community of the Rio Grande Valley along with their lifetime of service to IMAS. In its 38th anniversary, Collage is one of the longest running fundraisers and most eagerly anticipated social event of the year. All funds raised at Collage enable the museum to continue creating an inspirational legacy by providing life enhancing art and science exhibitions, educational programs, and cultural events serving to inspire our visitors to “"Think. Discover. Experience. Create." Since its establishment in 1967 IMAS has delighted visitors by featuring the finest national and international art and science exhibitions while providing exceptionally engaging educational programs. IMAS is a Smithsonian Affiliated museum and is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM). We have also become a member of the Association of Science and Technology Centers. This partnership allows us to create an environment that inspires, educates, and entertains the public through the arts and sciences. Over 75,000 visitors enjoyed IMAS this past year, with half the guests consisting of school children. We are continuing community engagement with Operation Imagination, our Outreach programs and a continued commitment to our satellite spaces, local artist programs, and the many quality programs and events offered throughout the year. We seek your support to further our mission of providing excellent world-class art and science exhibitions, science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) programming, and cultural events to the Rio Grande Valley. We challenge our audiences to "Think, Discover, Experience, and Create" the world around them as we inspire and motivate our community.
A LEGACY OF DISCOVERY: DR. JOHN GERLING, ARTHUR HUGHES, & BILL RANGANATH COLLAGE 2016 HONOREES Dr. John Gerling enjoys educating patients and parents about various fields like paleontology, astronomy, biology, and geography. As his appreciation of the community has grown over the years, he has joined non-profit boards to further improve their educational and cultural assets. Dr. Gerling has served IMAS for a total of 12 years as a board member and three consecutive years as Chairman of the Board. Dr. and Mrs. Gerling have dedicated their time serving on other non-profit organizations to fulfill their goals of furthering education and developing scientific literacy. Dr. Gerling has served (four years) on the Palm Valley Animal Shelter board; as committee co-chair for the first annual Puppy Love fundraiser; as board member (six years) on the McAllen Economic Development Council; and as board member (seven years) and is currently board president at Quinta Mazatlan. Dr. Gerling has provided continued support of IMAS and secured community support and appreciation for the IMAS mission, vision, mandate, beliefs, and long-term direction.
Mr. Arthur Hughes, a native New Yorker, was raised in Astoria Queens. While growing up in New York City, he became interested in museums and science as all NYC students were exposed to the Hayden Planetarium, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Museum of Art. In 1992, he moved to the Rio Grande Valley with his wife, Kim, and two daughters, Ashley and Megan, to build his Private Wealth Advisory practice in the Rio Grande Valley. He started his involvement with the IMAS board in 2000 during the construction of the new wing and continued on the board team until 2014. He was the Chairman of the Board and served as treasurer twice. Meanwhile, he also took on challenges as President of the McAllen South Rotary and board member of the American Red Cross, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and founding member of the Sharyland Education Foundation. Mr. Hughes continued serving and working cooperatively with board and staff members looking for opportunities to share IMAS' vision and mission with others and encouraging people to support IMAS by becoming a member or donating money, artifacts, or expertise. Mr. Bill Ranganath joined the IMAS Board of Trustees in 2002 and retired in 2014 after serving four full terms. He served as Secretary, Vice President of the Board, and Chairman in various years. “"Everyon e had the same goal of improving the performance of IMAS as an Art and Science Museum," stated Mr. Ranganath. Mr. Ranganath’'s main interest in volunteering with IMAS was the role the museum plays in the community in increasing public interests in STEM –(Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), particularly among the youth by offering exhibitions and programs which are not only educational but also entertaining. He sincerely believes that the future of our country depends on excelling in STEM knowledge and skills. To this day, Mr. Ranganath continues to fully support the Museum.
