From the desk of the President Hello everyone, is putting the “international” part of our name to the forefront. � IMAS IMAS is an accredited museum with the American Alliance of Museums
(AAM). One of IMAS’s goals is to share our permanent collection pieces not only to those in the Rio Grande Valley, but to other audiences throughout the United States and beyond. I am excited to share with you our expanded exhibition program. Last year, we hosted the international debut exhibition called “Weave-Indigenous Weavings: An Exhibition of Native Objects from the National Museum of History, Taiwan”. This exhibition shared artifacts of the native Taiwanese people along the eastern coast of Taiwan. It was a wonderful collection and started our collaboration. This year, we are excited to share with you, our “Imaginary Portraits” by Picasso will be traveling to Taiwan in May. These 29 lithographs and proofs will be on display in Taipei, Taiwan at the National Museum of History and in Taichung, Taiwan at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art. These art pieces will be on display from June until the end of October. In addition, this fall/winter we will be hosting, “The Fifth Mexican Shinzaburo Takeda Biennial of Printing”. This exhibition is a Rio Grande Valley favorite and one that we are excited to share with you. This exhibition will be held in our Clark Gallery Nov. 30, 2017- Feb. 18, 2018. Our vision of connecting art and science and reaching more visitors is becoming a reality. We are very proud to be part of the growth of the City of McAllen and the entire Rio Grande Valley. The IMAS Brew-seum Craft Beer Week is one of the largest beer festivals in South Texas, and returns for its ninth year Tuesday, April 4 through Sunday, April 9, 2017! Breweries and beer enthusiasts from across the region will gather and take part in this event. You do not want to miss out on the most anticipated event in South Texas! The Brew-seum Committee is once again preparing for the big event at IMAS. Tickets are ON SALE NOW! Purchase your tickets early, as they have always sold out! There is no guarantee of ticket availability at the gate the day of the event. Originally known as “A Night at the Brew-seum” (a one-day beer festival), the fundraiser expanded to a full week’s worth of events six years ago so as to quench the Valley’s evergrowing love for craft beer. Various locations, restaurants, and bars in the City of McAllen will serve as Brewseum Week’s backdrop, perfectly complimenting the various festival activities.

Water Journey & Watershed Opens on April 19, 2017
Our popular science exhibitions, Water Journey & Watershed, return to IMAS on Wednesday, April 19. Come and explore the wonders of water, one of our most precious natural resources, as a part of the "Smart About Water" program supported by the McAllen Public Utilities Board (MPUB) which focuses on increasing awareness about water conservation and environmental education in the Rio Grande Valley.
Water Journey, is a unique handson exhibit that features the full spectrum of the water cycle, in addition to the distribution and water treatment process, while exploring the display, children use their creativity to direct an imaginary flow of water. Models demonstrate the water cycle from evaporation to rainfall and the many ways in which water makes its way into our homes, schools and workplaces, then back into
the streams with the help of water treatment plants and other systems. Watershed is an interactive, awardwinning exhibition that guides children through processes such as the water cycle, with a special focus on the Arroyo Colorado Watershed of the Rio Grande Valley.
Extreme Deep: Mission to the Abyss May 20 to September 4, 2017
Dive into the mysterious world of deep-sea exploration and discovery this summer with our latest exhibit Extreme Deep: Mission to the Abyss. Children of all ages will love exploring the bottom of the sea. With multiple interactives using modern technology, you will learn firsthand about the geologic forces deep within the earth, the magnificent engineering feats of Mother Nature and the world of submersibble and shipwrecks.

Extreme Deep: Mission to the Abyss, continued Join fellow explorers in an interior replica of the submersible Alvin, which you can operate to simulate a dive to depths of up to three miles. You can fly a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) over a model of the Titanic's deck or test your skill at manipulating Alvin's robotic arm by picking up lava rocks and clams from the sea-floor while peering through a re-creation of Alvin's four-inch viewport window. It's not as easy as it looks! Geologic forces deep within the earth drive the great crustal plates of our planet, building sea-floor features that create hydrothermal vents. Researchers study the process firsthand in WHOI’s submersible Alvin, or using other tools like the remotely operated vehicle JASON and autonomous underwater vehicles ABE and REMUS. Extreme Deep brings the sea floor to the surface in an amazing display that illustrates the magnificent engineering feats of Mother Nature, such as the building of enormous “black smokers” that spew mineral-rich fluid into the ocean, supporting life vastly different from that flourishing on land or in shallow water. Extreme Deep: Mission to the Abyss exhibition will be open from May 20 to September 4, 2017 in the Discovery Pavilion of IMAS. Extreme Deep: Mission to the Abyss is presented by Evergreen Exhibitions in collaboration with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). This exhibition is not included in general admission, except for Family Premium Members and above.
Imaginary Botanicals: Sculpture in Glass by Kathleen Elliot May 20 to September 10, 2017 garage paved the way to a new life. Elliot took to working with glass immediately and began teaching herself the art of making glass beads, which she pursued for the next eight years. This introduction to flamework, working with a torch directly on glass, was to serve as the basis for her future sculptural projects.

Imaginary Botanicals: Sculpture in Glass by Kathleen Elliot is an exhibition of works from the last decade by California-based artist Kathleen Elliot on view in Central Gallery of IMAS from May 20 through September 10, 2017. Elliot creates sculptures out of flameworked glass, using a variety of botanical forms including leaves, flowers, fruits, pods, and vines that convey a sense of fantasy and mystery.

Her work has moved from the representational to the imaginary, in which plant forms incorporate human characteristics creating a sense of other worlds. Her sculptures are created from modern studio glass, a blend of art, science, and technological innovation that embraces the notion of glass as a medium for creative expression, in contrast to its use in industrial production. Prior to being an artist, she had a career as a hairstylist, then built a career in organizational development. In 1991, an invitation from a friend to try glasswork in his
Elliot took her first glassblowing workshop in 1996 and studied art at De Anza College. She attended the Pilchuck Glass School for three summers where she studied with leading glass artists Laura Donefer, Robert Mickelsen, and Shane Fero. The Imaginary Botanical series explores and plays with the notion of imagination, exploring whatever ideas struck her: a plant and cyclone hybrid, a botanical giraffe, a plant ballerina. It’s a fun series. The exhibition Imaginary Botanicals: Sculpture by Kathleen Elliot in Glass has been organized through Katherine T. Carter & Associates.
My Hero! Contemporary Art & Superhero Action April 15 to July 23, 2017

Experience the escapades of iconic superheroes with this pumped-up collection of international artworks in a variety of media. As contemporary idols, superheroes provide a rich source of inspiration for artists around the world. My Hero! Contemporary Art & Superhero Action celebrates and re-envisions the possibilities that exist when you have a magic cape, lasso, or some superhuman power that changes everything. My Hero! will feature art by nationally renowned artist Mark Newport (Keego Harbor, Michigan), who, for years, has been using superhero imagery to explore issues of identity and the definition of a “hero.” Newport says about his work: “Turning the superhero inside out is a way for me to present an understanding of masculinity. Superheroes suggest strength, but knitting them or covering them with embroidery provides a softness that is contradictory to their image.” Dulce Pinzon (Brooklyn, NY) makes photographs depicting the lives of immigrants as society’s “real superheroes,” with images of Catwoman working as a nanny and Superman delivering pizzas on his trusty bike. Sacramento artist Mel Ramos anchors the My Hero! exhibition. A pioneer in the genre of superhero art, Ramos has been using iconic images in his work for over 50 years. One of his earlier works, an oil painting of

Superman (1962), is currently on display at the Young Museum in San Francisco. Artist Lizabeth Rossof created a Batman warrior for My Hero! in Xi’an, China, featuring Batman as a historic Terracotta Warrior. The Batman warrior is authentic in composition and detail and is crafted using the same natural material as the original statues. Other notable Batman-themed art include Simon Monk’s Tim Drake featuring a Robin action figure and Steve Seeley’s Family Portrait of Batman and Batwoman. My Hero!’s international roster of artists includes a series of humorous, sardonic superhero paintings by Laurina Paperina (Rovereto,Italy), and a sultry rendering of Supergirl laying across Mount Taranaki by Graham Kirk (New Plymouth, New Zealand) that is both dramatic and comic. The Italian photography duo by the name Foto Marvellini (Vercelli, Italy) create rich, somber Victorian -like sepia toned images of our superheroes that appear as vintage photographs, circa 1850. My Hero! Contemporary Art & Superhero Action was organized by Carrie Lederer, Curator of Exhibitions, Bedford Gallery, Lesher Center for the Arts, Walnut Creek, CA.

EDUCATION STUDIO SUNDAYS
Last Sunday of every month
Join us on the last Sunday of every month for IMAS’s newest program, Studio Sundays. Studio Sundays are one hour fine arts workshops that introduce visitors to a variety of different art techniques and media. Studio Sundays are led by one of our staff artists and are perfect for families and individuals of all skill levels. In April, we will enjoy the changing spring weather as we create Monetinspired watercolor impressions of the local flora and fauna. In May, we will explore contemporary light art as we merge art and science to create layered works of art that combine color, texture, and light in new and interesting ways. In June, we will celebrate our newest exhibition, My Hero! Contemporary Art & Superhero Action, as we use pen and ink to create comic book art. ART AFTER DARK 21 and over only
IMAS’s Art after Dark series will also continue throughout the spring and summer with new fine arts workshops and gallery tours in our newest exhibitions. Art after Dark is a monthly 21 and over event featuring an hour and a half long hands-on fine art workshop and a thirty-minute gallery tour. Guests have the opportunity to learn how to utilize different art materials including acrylic paint, watercolor paint, charcoal and more. Guests will be guided step-by-step as they create their artwork. Guests are welcome to bring their own wine or beer to enjoy as they create their artworks. Light snacks are provided. On April 20, we will be exploring comic book art as we tour our new exhibit, My Hero: Contemporary Art & Superhero Action. Following the tour, guests will learn how to create their own pen and ink comic inspired artwork. On May 18, we will be welcoming in spring with a sneak peek tour through Imaginary Botanicals: Sculptures in Glass by Kathleen Elliot. Following the tour, guests will learn about chalk drawing techniques as they create their own floral still life. On June 8, we will journey through the depths as we tour our newest science exhibition, Extreme Deep: Mission to the Abyss. Guests will learn about acrylic painting techniques as they create a deep sea painting.
OPERATION IMAGINATION SUMMER CAMPS June 12-August 11, 2017

If so, IMAS’s Operation Imagination Summer Camps are perfect for you! Summer Camps run June 12-August 11 and are offered for grades Preschool-8. Each week-long session features a new, engaging theme sure to inspire your young learner. This year’s themes include Dino Rumble,

Space Academy, PokeWorldz, Superhero Science, Amazing Anatomy and Animal Forensics! Each week features hands-on art and science activities, educator led gallery tours, Science on a Sphere presentations, animal talks and more! This year, IMAS is offering an early bird special of 10% off your first week of camp if you book before May 15th! Be sure to reserve your spot since space is limited!
OUTREACH
Reaching over 2,500 residents from January-March, the IMAS Outreach Department has continued to serve the community from La Joya to Brownsville with Career Days, Expos and Workshops. In order to make a greater impact on schools, two additional programs have been added: Sciencepalooza and Artpalooza. These festivalstyle, hands-on programs inspire children and adults to discover and appreciate art and science. We've also added a STAAR Review Sciencepalooza to make reviewing fun! This June, our Summer Library Programs will be back in action with "The ABC's for Building a Better World (Architecture, Building, and Construction)". Be sure to find us at a local library near you. VOLUNTEERING AT IMAS IMAS would like to thank professors Jorge L. Solis and Jovonne Salgado and their students from South Texas College for helping our museum to accomplish IMAS' vision. "IMAS will be the #1 destination in Texas by becoming a full sensory experience for learning and inspiration". For the first time IMAS is partnering with STC and will be offering SOS video presentations in American Sign Language interpreted by STC students. This program is part of the internships offered at IMAS, where students have the opportunity to put their knowledge in practice, allowing our visitors that are deaf and/or hard of hearing to enjoy and have a complete experience in our Science on a Sphere Theater. Remember that there is always something new and exciting happening at IMAS, and this Summer is no exception! We are recruiting volunteers from the community to be a part of our summer programs. If you love art and/or science, like to work with kids, speak in public and you are 16 years old or older, complete a volunteer application and submit at the front desk. If under 16 you must be accompanied by adult when volunteering.
