Love Congo Health Centre… A huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated towards the cost of building a new health centre in Kasindi, on the DRC/Uganda border. We have now raised over £20,000 and will be starting building work shortly.

In a joint venture with New Hope, a UK charity delivering medical work in some of the world’s poorest countries, we now have the opportunity to purchase a piece of land which is 300 square metres in a growing area of the town. We intend to build a 6 patient maternity ward, an 8 patient inpatient ward, outpatients ward, delivery room, surgical room, drug store and laboratory facility.

Once completed we will charge patients $5 for delivery and $1 for a consultation, this is half the price of the local government hospital, with whom we have good relations. During the first 3 years we intend to visit on an annual basis to provide training, give practical support and deliver specialist equipment. After 5 years we aspire that the health centre would be sustainable.

Sticky Fingers Nursery We are excited to announce that we will be opening a nursery in September 2015. Building work has started and we are now accepting enquiries from interested parents. We are offering 15 hours free childcare for eligible 2 year olds and all 3 & 4 year olds.

Romance Academy rebranding… After 3 years as ‘Romance Academy’, we have opted to change the name to ‘Get Real’ to reflect the changing nature of the work. ‘Romance Academy’ is a national franchise running sex education courses in schools, as this is only part of the work we do we wanted a new name to reflect this. We will continue to run Romance Academy courses under the Get Real name.

Tash Pettman recently spoke to the Cinammon Network, a forum set up to support churches and charities to serve those most in need in their communities. Here’s what she had to say:

Q: Why did you start running Romance Academy? A: I always wanted to do something around the area of sex and relationships ever since growing up. I could see that it was something young people needed, and it was Romance Academy that really gave me the resources and the format to use. We’re a really great team of lots of different people who have different passions: we’ve got a doctor who works with the police on sexual abuse cases, so she’s got a lot of knowledge in that area, and our intern is really passionate about self-esteem and selfharm, and I’m passionate about how the church tackles the issue of pornography.

Q: What has been the impact of it in your community? A: We’ve visited quite a few different schools now. One school we go into is for young people who have been excluded from previous schools. It is just brilliant working and investing in those kids who have had a rough upbringing. Some of the stuff that they told us was shocking and heart-breaking for us, but being able to bring an alternative to that was amazing. We got to develop friendships with them, build their confidence and self-esteem and give them a new perspective on relationships.

We’ve also run seminars helping parents to learn how to talk about a range of things connected to sex and relationships with their teenage children; such as pornography, internet safety and so on, that are really important for parents to understand and get on board with.
