“Cooper Disposal has been incredible to work with. They cut my dumpster bill by 30 percent per year and Mike Cooper is always available to help my company out anytime we need anything.”

Ben Fligner, Fligner’s Market

“I use Cooper Disposal for 2 reasons. #1 is that they always provide great service and fast turnaround on their boxes. #2 and probably the most important, Mike Cooper is always giving back to his local community, so I know every box I buy from him a portion of that is going to a great organization or youth sports program in the community.”

Zack Mitchell, Westland Heating and Air Conditioning

“Mike & Sheila Cooper are always willing to help Avon Sports. Last year, Cooper Disposal donated all the dumpsters needed to demo the old Locker Room. The Cooper’s donated an equipment shed for youth football and are always asking what else they can do. They are the best of the best and make the City of Avon a better place.”

A Great Quality of Life in Westlake

Today, much of Westlake’s activity centers around dynamic retail and service areas like Crocker Park, an outdoor mixed use “city within a city” that blends retail, office and residential space into a “downtown” experience. Stacie Schmidt, vice president, marketing for Stark Enterprises, owner of Crocker Park, thinks of Crocker Park as “the community’s playground where you can come to shop and also enjoy multiple experiences from special events to dining and playing —

and sometimes working and living. We really want to make it feel like it’s a little bit of a big city in a suburban neighborhood.”

Locally-owned business are an important part of the eclectic mix of shops and eateries offered at Crocker Park, Schmidt said. “It’s not only about the national brands,” she said. “So many of our new locations are locally owned, like Tropical Smoothie [Café] and Bodhi Express, a new little fast casual restaurant. Whimsy Willow — a home decor shop—Canary Travel,

are some of our other new businesses with local ownership. So many business owners who live right around the corner wanted their businesses and franchise opportunities to be in Crocker Park.”

In 2022, at least 45 businesses opened, expanded or relocated in Westlake, Mayor Dennis Clough said during his 2023 State of the City address.

Contrasting Westlake’s bustling retail and commercial areas, the city also has abundant park space, including the

Bradley Woods Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks. The Huntington Reservation is conveniently just across the Bay Village border.

A “great quality of life,” Clough said, is among the reasons to live and work in Westlake. Among the others, he noted, are great services; good housing choices; a nationally ranked library; convenient location to Downtown Cleveland, the airport and interstate highways; good partnership with businesses; and a supportive constituency and involvement of citizens.

A Witness To History

Bruce Hamilton recalls seeing his father off as he boarded a train departing Cleveland’s Union Terminal. It was 1940 and Hamilton’s father, an attorney who worked for an area rubber company, was en route to Washington, D.C., accompanied by the local postmaster, to officially change the name of the rural village from Dover to Westlake, he said.

At the time, Ohio had two Dovers—the other being in Tuscarawas County—and it often caused confusion. “One time our volunteer fire department ordered a new fire truck and it was delivered to the wrong Dover,” said Hamilton, who was 10 years old when the name was changed. “The residents decided to change the name of the village [with some pressure from the postal service] and a poll was taken to see what it would be. Westlake ran the highest and that became the new name. But my dad and the postmaster traveled to Washington to make it official.”

According to the city’s website, other contenders for the new name included Clague Park, Claguewood and Park Ridge.

Dover Township, which originally included the land that became Bay Village, was part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. It was settled in 1810 and incorporated in 1811. The township included sawmills, gristmills and a blast furnace that made pig iron. But agriculture—primarily grapes— became the area’s most important business. According to the city’s website, the township became the nation’s second largest shipping point for grapes by the late 19th century. “From where Clague Road is, all the way west to the [Lorain] county line, it was all grapes,” Hamilton recalled.

Born in 1930, Hamilton may be the oldest living resident who was born in the village that became Westlake.

“My grandfather had a farm down on Detroit Road where the [UH Family Medicine Specialists clinic] is,” he said. “It went all the way back to the railroad tracks [north of I-90]. I remember when I was just a little kid I walked back to the tracks and watched the trains go by. I used to marvel at the trucks and tanks and stuff like that on the trains.”

Hamilton also remembers attending Dover Village High School—the “Red Brick School House”—where he met his wife Charlotte, who passed on five years ago. The couple raised four children. Hamilton still lives in the house where the couple raised their family—a house he helped build. “I had a brother-in-law who was a builder,” he said. “Every night for two years I’d go up there and help build the house. I’m not a carpenter or anything, but I could

always sweep and clean up. And I did all the decorating and the wallpapering inside the house.”

From that home, Hamilton, who spent most of his life as an automobile mechanic—eventually owning his own shop—watched Westlake grow from an agricultural village of about 3,200 residents in 1940 to a vibrant suburb of almost 35,000 today. “When I was a kid I used to trap muskrat down at the pond where the water plant is now at

Clague Road and the railroad tracks,” he said. “I used to ride my bike to school, or sometimes I would ride my horse. I’d put it in the old Cooley barn, which was located where the police station is at this time. I’d put the horse in there, tie it up, give it some hay, and I was off to school. Sometimes I would leave my shotgun in the barn, and after school we would hunt for pheasant or rabbit.”

About a mile south of the barn, Hamilton later took a job fixing cars at a garage owned by Frank Sauer, chief of the volunteer fire department. “It was close to where the Speedway gas station is at Dover Center and Center Ridge roads,” he said. “In those days when they had a fire, they had a great big siren on top of City Hall, which was about three doors west of the garage. When it went off, you knew it.”

Window Fashion Innovations

Who doesn’t want life to be easy, safe, and efficient?

Thanks to technology, with the press of a button or a voice command we can turn on the lights, see who’s at the front door, pacify a toddler with their favorite show and send an email all while a little robotic vacuum cleans the floor. But how many people consider window coverings a technological must-have to help make life easy, safe, and efficient?

Now entering our twentieth year as a Budget Blinds franchise, we’ve seen many changes to window coverings. From pull cords to cordless, single channel to multi-channel remotes and now we have smart home motorization. Our newest window fashions are not only aesthetically pleasing, they help make the life of a homeowner less of a chore. Imagine waking up to a darkened room but you want to let the morning sun in while still in bed. Maybe later you’re watching a game, but the afternoon sun causes a glare on the TV. With smart home motorization, a voice command or press of a button will open and close your blinds, and you don’t have to get out of bed or move from your favorite chair to do it. Easy and efficient.

What about safety? With motorized blinds, there’s no need for a ladder or pole to adjust two-story window treatments. Another example: We have a wheelchair-bound client. She no longer needs to use a cumbersome pole or wait on others to adjust her blinds. Her motorized window coverings not only keep her safe but makes life easy and efficient.

Another incredible security feature is being able to schedule your shades to open and close at certain times of the day. Or, using your phone, you can operate the shades even if you’re out of the country! No one will be able to tell that there’s nobody at home. Now that’s safe!
