Wadsworth

Continuing to Grow and Prosper

O

n March 1, 1814, two pioneering families ended a long and arduous journey following the recently cut East-West Road (Greenwich Road) from Canfield, Ohio. They purchased land from General Elijah Wadsworth, an investor in the Connecticut Land Company.

Their six-week adventure began in the New England states, where they packed up their essential belongings into Conestoga wagons and headed west. Upon arriving at their destination, they immediately cut down trees and cleared an area for their two small log cabins. They were under roof on March 17, 1814, which is now recognized as the official beginning of the community of Wadsworth.

More settlers began to arrive from the east, including the Pennsylvania Dutch. The Germans, or ‘Dutch,’ headed to the south and farther west of the Yankee settlement due to mistrust and ill feelings as a result of the Pennamite Wars in Pennsylvania.

Together, both groups developed and molded this small section of the Connecticut Western Reserve for future generations.

In 1816, Judge Frederick Brown purchased land two miles west of the

first settlers on the East-West Road. He constructed a log cabin for his family on the site. Little did he know that Wadsworth’s downtown area would eventually develop at this location.

As the population grew and farms were being established, small businesses, shops, and general stores were built. Mills were built along the many streams that traversed the area.

The planing mills reduced logs into planks and boards for permanent homes that took the place of log cabins. Quarries were dug to provide foundation stones. Other businesses included grist mills, a blacksmith shop, a tannery, and general stores. All were located on or near the East-West Road.

Farming continued to be the main occupation of the populace until the 1860’s. It was 1863 when some prominent citizens of Wadsworth raised the money and promissory notes to persuade the Atlantic & Great Western Railroad to run a rail through the town. proper elevation of the land. The railroad brought new opportunities to the farmers and businessmen. The plentiful supply of wood was sold to run the steam engines. An injector factory was created to build and sell products used on all steam-generating engines. Farmers took advantage of the transportation to ship their excess grain to new markets. Other small manufacturing plants grew up along the railroad tracks.

Another commodity that was harvested and shipped was the bituminous coal that was mined throughout the township. Coal mining became Wadsworth’s largest business for nearly 50 years. The coal was shipped to markets all over the United States.

Wadsworth grew in population and finally met the numbers to become a

village in 1870. With that status, the Wadsworth School system was started.

Comprehensive education for first through eleventh grades was provided at the newly constructed Union School located downtown.

The next era in Wadsworth’s history occurred around the beginning of the 20th century. A group of entrepreneurs invested in the creation of several big businesses. The four Ohio Companies, including the Ohio Match and the Ohio Injector Company, were created in the south end of town. Other companies that were built during this era were the Wadsworth Salt Company and the Wadsworth Tile and Brick Company.

All these companies combined employed close to two thousand people. An interurban electric train was built in 1907 to assist in bringing employees from the Barberton and Akron areas. Wadsworth’s population boomed, and newly arrived immigrants from Italy, Hungary, Ireland, and Eastern Europe moved to town to take the jobs. Wadsworth became a culturally diverse melting pot.

This influx of people resulted in the downtown area growing and prospering. Many retail shops, banks, restaurants, service providers, and grocery stores saturated the area around the downtown intersection known as the ‘Center’.

Wadsworth was incorporated as a city in 1931. A new city hall was built in 1936 in the same general area as

the village hall. Today’s modern city hall, built in 1995, stands as a beacon downtown as it bears witness to the prosperity that the city continues to experience. The city services provide the citizens with low utility rates and efficiently maintained streets and parks.

The Wadsworth City Schools are another gem in the crown of the city.

The school district is known for its excellence in academics, athletics, and arts.

Today, Wadsworth continues to grow and prosper. The large factories closed over 40 years ago; however, the city maintains a balanced economy based on many small industries, large retail stores, grocery store chains, restaurants, and comprehensive service providers. The Midwestern values are a mainstay, and old-fashioned traditions mingle with modern-day lifestyles that provide an ideal setting for raising families and living out the golden years of retirement. It is no wonder that people who were raised in Wadsworth remain in this safe haven of a community!

The Wadsworth Area Historical Society Museum, also known as the Dr. Johnson House, is located next to City

Hall at 161 High Street. The museum is open most Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. - noon and during special Main Street Wadsworth events. Admission is free. Appointments may be scheduled with Roger L. he City continues to invest in parks, trails, recreational amenities, and public gathering spaces through projects identified in the Park and Trail Master Plan and other community development initiatives. Recent projects have focused on modernizing facilities, expanding recreational opportunities, improving connectivity, and enhancing quality of life for residents and visitors:

▸ Blue Tip Park (2024) and

Splash Pad: The new playground, which replaced the aging Kaleidoscope structure, was designed with input from community members and playground consultants.

It features distinct areas for different age groups and includes accessible elements for children with disabilities, a splash pad, pavilions, restrooms, parking, sidewalks, and roadway improvements.

▸ Memorial and Durling Parks Tennis and Pickleball

Courts: Court improvements were another focus of the Park and Trail Master Plan, with Durling Park now featuring two new tennis courts, four pickleball courts, and a half basketball court. Memorial Park also saw upgrades with the addition of two new tennis courts and two pickleball courts.

▸ Downtown Pocket Park: To further enhance downtown

Wadsworth, a new pocket park was constructed on Main Street through funding primarily supported by state capital appropriations. The space was transformed into a public gathering area featuring casual seating, gas firepits, a viewing area for concerts and events, and a bidirectional stage.

property is undergoing passive park development, environmental remediation, and site preparation efforts across the approximately 205-acre former brick production facility. Supported in part by a $2.5 million One Time Strategic Community Investments Grant, the first phase of park development includes more than three miles of crushed stone, paved, and natural surface trails, scenic overlooks, trailheads, access to natural rock outcroppings, and views of ponds and wetlands throughout the property.

In addition, the site is undergoing demolition and environmental remediation activities funded through a $2.1 million State Brownfield grant. The project includes demolition, debris removal, and hazard mitigation efforts to meet Ohio EPA “No Further Action” standards and prepare the property for future recreational and redevelopment opportunities, including the proposed athletic complex and continued passive park development.

▸ Friedt Park: Development of Friedt Park includes a new 91,000-square-foot multi-use synthetic turf field with bullpens, dugouts, fencing, repurposed athletic field lighting from Memorial Park, and restroom facilities.

The park supports youth lacrosse, baseball, softball, and adult softball leagues relocated following the removal of the Memorial Park field for the Blue Tip Park project.

Additional planned improvements include a 61-space paved parking lot, full-court basketball facility, concrete walkways, and a new playground.

▸ Southwest Parking Lot Initiative: This initiative is

designed to redevelop a half-acre area in downtown Wadsworth into a new public parking facility designed to support downtown businesses, visitors, and community activity. While the primary purpose of the project is to provide parking, the space is also being designed to

accommodate community events and public gatherings when needed.

▸ Safety Town Village and a 9/11 Memorial: Additional

notable projects include the completion of a permanent Safety Town Village and a 9/11 Memorial behind the new fire station. The Safety Town features roadways, signs, and miniature buildings sponsored by local businesses and individuals, with primary sponsorship from the Rotary Club of Wadsworth. The 9/11 Memorial, featuring a piece of World Trade Center steel donated by the FDNY, provides a solemn tribute to those affected by the events of September 11, 2001.

▸ Fiber to the Home: The CityLink fiber network project

also continues to progress. This initiative will provide every residential and commercial address in the city with high-speed fiber internet, with more than 100 miles of fiber being installed. All existing CityLink customers will be converted to fiber when available, with speeds exceeding 1G. Construction is expected to continue into 2027, and all residents are encouraged to take advantage of this upgrade.

Wadsworth has experienced continued private and public investment through business expansions, commercial redevelopment, new business construction, manufacturing growth, educational facility development, and public safety infrastructure improvements. Recent projects have included significant capital investments across the industrial, retail, healthcare, hospitality, entertainment, and institutional sectors, contributing to job creation, expanded services, increased commercial activity, and long-term community development throughout the city.

his husband and wife duo has made a lasting impact on Wadsworth through years of dedication, volunteerism, and community leadership. From Lori’s work helping bring back the Wadsworth Farmers Market to Alex’s involvement with Main Street Wadsworth, the Salvation Army, the YMCA, and more, their commitment runs deep.

For more than a decade, they have brought the community together through the annual “Thriller” performance during Scare in the Square, a tradition that continues to grow, drawing thousands to downtown each year and even gaining national attention.

Their passion, creativity, and dedication have helped put Wadsworth on the map while strengthening the sense of community that defines our city.

O.J. Work Auditorium, located within the former Wadsworth Central Intermediate School building, into a revitalized performing arts and entertainment venue in downtown Wadsworth. Led by the Wadsworth Square Foundation, the project included approximately $1.5 million in renovations and upgrades designed to preserve the building’s historic architectural character while modernizing the venue for contemporary performances.

Improvements included restoration of original plaster and architectural details, updated backstage facilities, new carpeting and finishes, enhanced audience amenities, and more than $450,000 in upgraded sound and lighting systems. The revitalized venue now offers a professionally equipped performance space while maintaining the historic atmosphere and legacy of the original auditorium.

▸ Cleveland Clinic acquired the former Rite Aid building

and invested nearly $7 million to transform the property into a modern urgent care facility featuring onsite imaging and laboratory services.

▸ Sheetz gas station and convenience store construction

included an approximately $8.5 million private investment in Wadsworth, featuring a new 6,139-square-foot convenience store and related site improvements.

▸ Buehler’s Fresh Foods completed a $3.5 million remodel,

including a modernized shopping experience, enhanced grab-and-go food options, updated décor, and the addition of a new Starbucks café.

▸ J.C. Whitlam Manufacturing completed a 10,000-squarefoot expansion of its facility, a $3.8 million investment.

Main Street Wadsworth's vision is to continue on a momentum-building path to downtown revitalization through community and stakeholder support to create a fun and inviting downtown destination that is unmatched in the State of Ohio.

We look forward to an exciting year of programming that makes Wadsworth a place for citizens and visitors to work, live, and play in our National Historic District. comprised of nine school buildings, including five elementary schools, one intermediate school, one middle school, one high school, and the Grizzly Academy.

The high school and community center complex allows the school to share community space with the City of Wadsworth, Summa WadsworthRittman Health System, and Wadsworth Public Library, enhancing recreational opportunities for all age groups and serving as a satellite hub for wellness and library services. Fifty Years of Aging Well in Wadsworth!

here is a unique energy at 617 School Drive, home to Wadsworth’s highly popular Soprema Senior Center (SSC). Open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., their positive atmosphere is bursting with life…from seniors learning something new or playing spirited games, to the warm hum of catching up with friends over coffee and meals in the Soprema Café. This year, the SSC proudly celebrates its 50th Anniversary of making Wadsworth an amazing place to age well!

For five decades, the center (formerly the Center for Older Adults) has proven that aging is about stepping into a vibrant new chapter. In the early 1970s, a passionate group called the "Lively Seniors" asked the City of Wadsworth for a dedicated space for older adults. The City answered, and in 1976 they provided three staff members and transformed the downtown Civic Center into the first senior center in Medina County.

As the Center blossomed, its support system grew.

The Wadsworth Older Adults Foundation (WOAF) was established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit pillar, ensuring the financial backing and advocacy needed to champion local seniors, provide extra resources to the Center, and keep membership free for all.

With this deeprooted history, the Center expanded beyond traditional boundaries in 2013, moving into the beautiful, intergenerational Community Center Campus with a new name: Soprema Senior Center, thanks to a generous donation from SOPREMA USA. The SSC is an essential community hub, hosting resourcepacked events like the annual Senior & Caregiver Expo, alongside daily social opportunities, health & wellness programs, creative arts, educational classes, and much more. The Soprema Café, operated

by Medina County Senior & Adult Services and located inside the SSC, is open to the public weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., offering delicious, affordable breakfast and lunch options.

Alongside the City, WOAF, and the SSC’s small but mighty staff of three, the Center thrives with the support of over 130 Professional Friends from across the region and over 125 senior volunteers. This collaboration is a true testament of what happens when a City, a dedicated Foundation, and a passionate community come together to value the wisdom and vitality of its older generations, keeping membership to the SSC free for anyone aged 55+.

Members residing within the City limits receive a variety of special benefits, including a quarterly newsletter mailed directly to their homes.

T

he staff and Board of the Ella M. Everhard Public Library, aka Wadsworth Public Library, extend our sincere thanks to each of the over 500 patrons who attended our 100th anniversary celebration on January 18, 2026. In addition to these many dedicated patrons, local and state

officials, we were very fortunate to share this memorable occasion with the Library’s first student page, Ramona Medley Slabaugh, a lifelong Wadsworth resident who was hired by and worked with our first library director, Alice Woodard, in the 1940s.

Ms. Woodard and our founding benefactor, Mrs. Ella M. Everhard, were deeply committed to putting book learning and leisure reading at the center of community life in Wadsworth. As we reflect on and celebrate our first 100 years of service and the many ways that Wadsworth Public Library has adapted to meet the changing needs and interests of our patrons, that historic mission rooted in reading culture has perhaps never been more important. In this brave new world of screen-mediated life, civil discourse is withering, student achievement is faltering across the nation, and distraction is wreaking havoc on the quality of life we share together.

In response, Wadsworth Public Library is refocusing on its core mission of serving local reading culture. We’re kicking off this, the first of our next 100 years of service, with a new approach to developing, organizing, and displaying our collections of books and circulating materials that is sure to bring delight to readers young and old. With over 180,000 circulating items in our collections, this work will progress over the course of the next several years. We encourage you to visit frequently and provide feedback as we transform our collections to better serve you and your family.

The humble book is an antidote and ballast to the negative side effects of screen-mediated life. When families prioritize reading, students succeed in academics and beyond. And when we balance our digital life with unplugged reading, we position ourselves and our community to truly gain the best of both worlds.

oin us in preventing battery fires by properly disposing of your batteries! Many of our favorite everyday things run on batteries, but when tossed in the regular trash or recycling bins, certain batteries can spark intense fires that are nearly impossible to stop. Battery fires are happening more often and have destroyed homes, garbage trucks, recycling centers, and have taken lives.

The good news? Battery fires are easily preventable.

Never throw Lithium, NiCad, Button Cell, or Lead Acid batteries in trash or recycling bins. Always tape the connections and drop them off at a safe collection site, like our Specialty Waste Facility at 8730 Lake Road, Seville, which is open Mondays and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 a.m. - noon. You can also take them to Brunswick City, Brunswick Hills, Hinckley, and Liverpool Township Fire Departments, and the Medina County EMA office. In 2025, Medina County residents properly disposed of 13.81 tons of batteries!

edina County Park District is in the early planning stages of the BMW Trail, a long-term project that will connect Brunswick, Medina, and Wadsworth through a shared, multi-use trail corridor. With financial support from all three cities, a three-year planning effort is now underway, with the goal of building on existing trails and engaging the public to create a cohesive link between the three communities.

A construction timeline has not yet been determined, but the project marks a significant step toward giving Wadsworth residents a direct trail connection to neighboring Brunswick and Medina.

The City of Wadsworth offers weekly curbside trash pick-up to the City and surrounding areas.

Rates are set by City Ordinance, which means there are no hidden fees, no fuel charges, and no surprises!
