ON THE COVER: Local business and community partners gather for a group photo at Lorain Public Library’s Domonkas Branch. The branch has served the community for more than 60 years. Opened in 1964, it was made possible in large part through a generous donation from local benefactors Stephen and Ruth Domonkas, who wanted to give back to the community they loved. Today, the branch offers books and digital resources, free Wi-Fi and computers, meeting space, educational programs, children’s and teen activities, and a reading area overlooking Lake Erie. Sheffield Village Every Community Has a Story. Welcome to Ours.
Local police talk to students and teach them to know when and how to ask for help.
I am Bob Markovich, Mayor of the Village of Sheffield, and it is my honor to welcome you to one of Northeast Ohio’s most remarkable communities. Every community has roads, businesses, and parks. What makes Sheffield Village different is our people. Here, neighbors know one another. Businesses invest in the community they serve. Volunteers step forward because they care. First responders answer the call with courage and compassion. Village employees work every day—not because it is their job, but because they believe in making this community better than it was yesterday. That spirit cannot be manufactured. It is built over generations. It is the heartbeat of Sheffield Village. As Mayor, I have the privilege of witnessing that spirit every day, and it inspires me to continue building a Village that future generations will be proud to call home. Bob Markovich, Mayor, Village of Sheffield

here. Our business community reflects that same momentum. More than 300 businesses proudly call Sheffield Village home. From internationally recognized employers such as Ford Motor Company, Benko Products, and Amware Distribution to hometown favorites like The Backpacker’s Shop, The Village Deli, and Sugar Creek Restaurant, our businesses represent innovation, craftsmanship, entrepreneurship, and the welcoming spirit that defines our community. Our story, however, began long before today’s growth. Sheffield Village is home to the historic Burrell Homestead, the last stop on the Underground Railroad before freedom across Lake Erie. Our community also became home to one of America’s earliest colleges where men and women, Black and White students learned together. That remarkable legacy reminds us that Sheffield Village has always been a place willing to lead — with courage, opportunity, and a belief in the value of every person. Life here is also meant to be enjoyed. Whether you are hiking the trails of the French Creek Reservation, paddling French Creek, spending the afternoon at James Day Park, or simply sharing a meal with family at one of our local restaurants, you will quickly discover that Sheffield Village offers something increasingly rare — a place where people still take time to connect with one another. I often say that leadership is stewardship. Our responsibility is to honor those who came before us while creating opportunities for those who will follow. Great communities are not built by chance. They are built by people who choose, every day, to invest in one another. Thank you for taking the time to discover Sheffield Village. I hope you will explore our history, support our local businesses, enjoy our parks, and most importantly, experience the people who make this Village such an extraordinary place to call home. On behalf of our residents, businesses, employees, and elected officials... Welcome to Sheffield Village. — Bob Markovich Mayor, Village of Sheffield

VILLAGE OVERVIEW
22222222222
Small Town Charm
with a Rich History Nestled in the heart of Lorain County, Sheffield Village has been welcoming residents since 1815, when pioneers from Sheffield, Massachusetts, settled the area. Today, the village is home to approximately 4,300 residents who enjoy a close-knit community, beautiful parks, and the convenience of being just 30 miles west of downtown Cleveland. Although Sheffield Village has grown over the past two centuries, it has never lost sight of its roots. The community played an important role in the Underground Railroad, with local abolitionists and Great Lakes ship captain Aaron Root helping freedom seekers make
their journey to Canada. The village also made educational history in the 1830s when the Sheffield Manual Labor Institute, located on the Burrell Homestead and associated with the Oberlin Collegiate Institute, welcomed women and African American students at a time when such opportunities were exceedingly rare. Nature continues to be one of the village’s greatest assets. With easy access to the French Creek Nature Center and Theatre, the Black River Reservation, and miles of scenic trails, residents enjoy countless opportunities to explore the outdoors, observe wildlife, and experience the beauty of every season. Historic landmarks such as the Village Hall, Garfield Cemetery, and the Burrell Homestead serve as reminders of Sheffield Village’s rich heritage, while ongoing investments in infrastructure, parks, and public safety demonstrate the community’s commitment to the future. Today, Sheffield Village offers the best of both worlds — a

quiet, family-friendly atmosphere with convenient access to shopping, dining, and major highways. Community events, recreation programs, and neighborhood traditions continue to bring residents together, making the village a place where history is celebrated, neighbors know one another, and families are proud to call home.
Working Together
For Our Future
“
Sheffield Village works best when residents feel informed, heard, and connected to the decisions shaping their community. I believe public service means being accessible, communicating clearly, and making sure your concerns receive more than an acknowledgment—they deserve attention and action. My focus remains on strengthening accountability, improving how village government serves residents, and creating more opportunities for the community to participate. Better communication. Greater transparency. A stronger connection between residents and their village government.

Sheffield Lake Building a Stronger City Exciting things continue to happen in Sheffield Lake as we invest in projects, partnerships, and programs that strengthen our community and improve the quality of life for our residents. Through our continued commitment to recreation, infrastructure, public safety, and community engagement, we are creating opportunities for people of all ages to connect, enjoy our parks, and take pride in the city we call home. One of the most significant accomplishments this year was the completion of the paved trail through our partnership with the Lorain County Metro Parks, creating greater accessibility and expanding recreational opportunities for residents and visitors. Looking ahead, we are continuing to build on that success with plans for the Lakefront Connectivity Project, which will feature new eight-foot-wide sidewalks along Lake Road. This transformational project will improve pedestrian safety, increase accessibility, and better connect our parks, neighborhoods, and lakefront amenities.
Our community calendar continues to grow with events that bring residents together throughout the year. From Movie Nights in the Park, Sunday Playdates, Summer Fun in the Park, and Tuesday Tunes to community favorites like Cops & Bobbers, Dunkle Day, Community Days, the Halloween Party, and Christmas by the Lake, there are more opportunities than ever for families, neighbors, and visitors to connect and celebrate everything Sheffield Lake has to offer. As we look toward the future, Sheffield Lake remains committed to responsible growth, investing in quality infrastructure, expanding recreational opportunities, enhancing our parks and public spaces, and building partnerships that improve the quality of life for our residents. Together, we are creating a stronger, more connected lakeside community where families can live, play, and thrive.

Another exciting addition to our community is the construction of Sheffield Lake’s new splash pad. Made possible through our valued
partnership with Ford Motor Company and the generosity of its employees, this project represents a significant investment in family-friendly PHOTO: @MR_GRANBERRY recreation and will provide children with a fun, safe place to play for years to come.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to build an even brighter future for Sheffield Lake. Sincerely, Rocky Radeff Mayor, City of Sheffield Lake

CITY OVERVIEW

DEEP ROOTS and b b Remarkable Stories
The story of Sheffield Lake begins in 1815, when Captain Jabez Burrell and Captain John Day traveled from Sheffield, Massachusetts, to purchase land in Connecticut’s Western Reserve. Their arrival marked the beginning of a community that would eventually lend its name to Sheffield Township, Sheffield Village, and Sheffield Lake. In 2015, all three communities came together to celebrate the bicentennial of their shared heritage, honoring more than 200 years of local history. Life for the earliest settlers wasn’t always peaceful. During the War of 1812, some residents along the Lake Erie shoreline reportedly heard the distant cannon fire from the Battle of Lake Erie — also known as the Battle of Put-in-Bay — a decisive American naval victory. Those first pioneers established farms along the fertile banks of the Black River and French Creek before recognizing the advantages of farming closer to the lake, where rich soil and easy transportation helped the community flourish. As the years passed, Sheffield Lake developed into both an agricultural center and a popular
lakeside destination. In 1873, entrepreneur Jay Terrell opened the Lake Breeze House, the area’s first hotel, welcoming visitors with lakeside cottages and pleasure boats that made the community a favorite summer retreat. Following World War II, Sheffield Lake experienced tremendous growth, transforming from a quiet farming and resort town into a thriving residential community as its population increased nearly tenfold.
Sheffield Lake’s five beautiful lakefront parks offer residents and visitors easy access to sunset views, boat launches, picnic spots, and playgrounds. The community has also played an important role in the nation’s history. During the Civil War, hundreds of local men served with the 103rd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, fighting in campaigns across Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee. Many veterans are laid to rest in Garfield Cemetery, while the regiment’s legacy continues to be preserved through its headquarters and museum. Descendants of the 103rd have hosted annual reunions for nearly 160 years, gathering each summer to nurture relationships, reminisce, and continue honoring the service of their ancestors of the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. IT’S REALLY, REALLY OLD: Dunkleosteus Terrelli Replica on display at Sheffield Lake City Hall
Today, Sheffield Lake covers approximately 2.5 square miles along the shores of Lake Erie and is home to nearly 9,000 residents. Conveniently located just minutes from Lorain and about 25 minutes west of Cleveland via State Route 2, the city offers lakeside living with easy access to the amenities of Northeast Ohio.
Sheffield Lake’s Prehistoric Claim to Fame One of Sheffield Lake’s most fascinating stories reaches back nearly 360 million years. Around 1867, resident Jay Terrell — the same man who would later establish the Lake Breeze House — discovered unusual fossils in the shale cliffs
along the Lake Erie shoreline. The fossils were donated to geologist John Strong Newberry and the Ohio Geological Survey, which described the remarkable find in 1873. The ancient predator was eventually named Dunkleosteus terrelli, with the species name honoring Terrell for his discovery. One of the largest armored fish ever known, Dunkleosteus could grow to an estimated 20 to 30 feet in length and ruled the prehistoric seas long before the age of dinosaurs. Today, the discovery remains one of Ohio’s most celebrated paleontological finds and gives Sheffield Lake a unique place in both state and scientific history.

way Northeast Ohio thinks about skin care. Instead of treating dermatology as a collection of separate services, Apex Skin takes a 360° approach, bringing medical dermatology, Mohs surgery, aesthetics, a CAP-accredited pathology lab, and clinical research together under one trusted network. Why does that matter? Because skin health isn’t one-size-fits-all. Whether it’s a child’s eczema, a suspicious mole, or a customized aesthetic treatment plan, Apex Skin cares for every patient, every condition, and every stage of life. That commitment starts with prevention. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, and rates in Northeast Ohio run 14% higher than the national average. “A skin check takes just minutes, but it can save your life,” says Dr. Henry. “Most skin cancers are highly treatable when caught early. My advice is simple: don’t wait. Make your annual skin exam a priority.” When treatment is needed, patients are in

It extends to confidence. “We’re proud to be an award-winning clinic for natural beauty,” says Tessa Fraicola, FNP. “When patients look in the mirror and see natural, refreshed results, it builds real confidence. 222222 smaller blacklegged tick (commonly known as the deer tick) has spread across Northeast Ohio. Because deer ticks are tiny — often looking like a moving freckle — they can easily go unnoticed. They carry the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. Lorain County saw 30 confirmed cases of Lyme disease between 2019 and 2024, with roughly 19 of those occurring in 2024 alone.
Protect yourself And pets from ticks When spending time outside during warm fall days, you may come into contact with seasonal bugs. While most are harmless, ticks can transmit diseases to humans. Lorain County Public Health (LCPH) wants to help you stay informed about the most common health risks associated with these pests this season.
Ticks - What are They?
Many people are familiar with the American dog tick, which is relatively large and does not carry Lyme disease. However, the

Protect Yourself from Ticks
DO A TICK CHECK: Check your whole body thoroughly after being outside, even in your own yard. Finding and removing ticks early is the best way to avoid getting sick. USE REPELLENTS: Use bug spray that is EPA-registered with DEET or picaridin on skin. You can also spray clothes, running shoes, or hiking boots with a tick killer like permethrin — just be sure to follow the directions. MAINTAIN YOUR SPACES: Mow the grass, rake up leaves, and keep areas near woods clear to make it harder for ticks to live there. CHECK YOUR PETS: Pets can bring ticks indoors! Check your pets after they’ve been outside and talk to your vet about year-round tick prevention products. If you find a tick on yourself, your child, or pet, remove it and save it in a sealed bag. Use our online tick tracker at LorainCountyHealth.com/ticks to help us identify which types of ticks are in our area.
THIRTY YEARS AGO, Avon native Mike Bramhall had a vision in the basement office of his rural hometown — and Bramhall Engineering & Surveying Company was born. The company has grown alongside Lorain County, with the help of partners Chris Howard, Aaron Appell, and Amy Kelly, along with a dedicated professional staff. Bramhall has been closely involved with Lorain County’s growth, from inspecting residential subdivisions to providing high-quality civil engineering and surveying services for industrial, commercial, public, and private developments. Bramhall thanks its clients for their trust and partnership. The extensive project experience that brings daily success would not be possible without the communities it serves.

5 Tips
Winter Home Safety
Winter weather and plummeting temperatures are just around the corner. Here are five winter home safety tips that will help prepare you for whatever Mother Nature brings.
1
Check Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors You should always change the batteries in your household smoke and CO detectors at least once per year. Check the detector’s expiration date, which can be found on the bottom. If there’s no expiration date, know that the average CO detector has a life expectancy of 3-5 years, while smoke detectors need to be replaced every 8-10 years.
2
Ensure Proper Ventilation Don’t forget to clean your home’s return and supply vents, dryer vent, as well as your bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans. Inadequate ventilation at any time of the year can lead to harmful indoor air conditions.
3
Filter Replacements Furnace filters should be replaced every 2-3 months. However, during the winter it’s always a good idea to change them more frequently. More time spent indoors means more dust accumulation as well as more airborne particles & contaminants. Routine replacements keep your heating system running at peak performance, improve your indoor air quality, and save on energy usage.
4
Schedule a Furnace Inspection Getting a yearly furnace inspection and cleaning not only ensures that your heating system is functioning properly but also safely. During an inspection, our experts can identify problems such as worn parts or CO leaks. Early detection can save money, helping you avoid an untimely system breakdown, and give you peace of mind knowing that your system is performing as it should.
5
Clean Your Gutters Cleaning your gutters before the first snowfall will help you prevent water and ice build-up that can cause serious damage to your roof and your home. Contact JD Indoor Comfort for all your residential or commercial heating and cooling needs. 440-949-8758 or jdindoorcomfort.com.

behind walls:
Out of Sight, but Not Out of Mind
When was the last time you thought about your home’s air ducts? If you’re like most homeowners, the answer is probably “never.” Hidden behind walls, ceilings, and floors, your ductwork quietly circulates the air your family breathes every day. Over time, however, it can also collect dust, dirt, pet dander, pollen, and other contaminants that affect both your home’s comfort and your HVAC system’s performance. When Your Ductwork Is Trying to Tell You Something Your home often provides clues when duct cleaning is overdue. Dust that quickly returns around vents after you’ve cleaned, musty odors that won’t go away, or mildew around registers can all point to build-up inside the ductwork. Cracks or gaps in the system may also invite rodents and insects, creating problems that extend well beyond dirty ducts. Even inconsistent temperatures from room to room can signal restricted airflow caused by accumulated debris.
More Than Just Cleaner Air Professional duct cleaning does more than reduce dust. It helps improve indoor air quality by removing contaminants such as pet dander, pollen, bacteria, and mildew that can aggravate allergies and respiratory conditions. Clean ductwork also allows your HVAC system to move air more efficiently, reducing unnecessary strain, improving comfort, and helping lower monthly energy costs. Fewer odors, less dust, and better system performance make duct cleaning an investment in both your home’s health and efficiency.
How Often Should Ducts Be Cleaned? Most homes benefit from professional air duct cleaning every three to five years. Homes with pets, larger families, or occupants with allergies or asthma may need more frequent service. If annual HVAC maintenance has been overlooked, scheduling a duct inspection is also a smart next step. Luxury Heating Company provides professional air duct cleaning & sealing services to help homeowners improve indoor air quality, enhance HVAC performance, and enjoy a cleaner, healthier home. Sheffield Sheffield Lake Youth Soccer Association (SSLYSA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to developing and fostering a love of soccer in children throughout the community. Run entirely by volunteers and guided by a Board of Directors, SSLYSA was established to bring recreational soccer back to the Sheffield Lake and Sheffield Village communities. The league is open to everyone — not just residents of Sheffield Lake and Sheffield Village. Children from surrounding communities are welcome to join, regardless of their experience or skill level. All practices and games are held at Guenther Park in Sheffield Lake. SSLYSA focuses on teaching the fundamentals of soccer in a fun, supportive environment. Players work on dribbling, foot skills, and passing while participating in small-sided games ranging from 3v3 to 5v5. The program is divided into two age groups: Littles (U5–U9) and Bigs (U10–U15). Looking ahead, SSLYSA hopes to establish a travel team that would compete against other teams throughout Lorain County, allowing local players to continue developing their skills and take their love of the game to the next level.
