Welcome I
mage Builders Marketing is proud to announce the 20th Annual Medina Magazine and Community Guide, celebrating why Medina is one of Northeast Ohio's premier places to live. Despite its impressive growth, Medina has held onto its small-town feel. It's more than a city — it's a welcoming community with firstrate schools, beautiful parks and recreational facilities, and strong city services. Residents enjoy access to quality medical care, including the Cleveland Clinic, along with a public library, diverse shopping and dining, and easy highway access to anywhere in the region. It's no wonder Medina consistently ranks among the best places to live. At the heart of it all is the historic Square, lined with charming late-1800s Victorian buildings housing unique shops and excellent restaurants. With the charm of a New England village green, the Square hosts festivals and events year-round, drawing visitors

Whether you're new to Medina or have called it home for a lifetime, we hope you enjoy these informative features and keep this guide as a handy reference for community information. A Look Around Town York Township
Since its establishment in 1830, York Township has maintained the character of a close-knit rural community while remaining within easy reach of the region’s larger cities. Located just northwest of Medina, the township encompasses the small communities of Mallet Creek, Lester, Erhart and Abbeyville, each adding to its distinctive hometown feel. Cleveland and Akron are both about 30 miles away, but life in York moves at a more relaxed pace. Much of the township’s personality is reflected in its traditions, from the annual Memorial Day parade and veterans’ commemorative program to the Erhart Fire Department’s popular October Swiss Steak Dinner and the Historical Society’s “Santa at the One-Room Schoolhouse.” These longstanding events bring neighbors together and help preserve the sense of community that has defined York Township for generations.
Medina Township
History runs deep in Medina Township, one of the oldest organized governments in Medina County. Its roots reach back to the earliest settlement of the Western Reserve, and its story is closely intertwined with that of the City of Medina. Located along the city’s northeastern edge, the township contributed land to the village of Medina when it incorporated in 1818. Today, Medina Township combines established neighborhoods and open spaces with the convenience of being next door to the county seat. Four cemeteries—Weymouth, Hamilton Corners, Remsen and Medina Center—offer reminders of the generations who Pictured above: York Township — Lester Rail Trail; Medina Township — Lake Medina, Photo: Medina County Park District Volunteer David Harrison; Lafayette Township — Krabill Lodge, Chippewa Lake Park, Photo: Medina County Park District Volunteer David Harrison; Montville Township — Austin Badger Park.

came before, with Medina Center continuing to serve the community today. The result is a township where a long and fascinating history remains part of everyday life.
Lafayette Township
Rural scenery, recreation and modern conveniences come together naturally in Lafayette Township. Situated just southwest of the City of Medina, the township is characterized by working farms, residential neighborhoods, parklands and commercial areas. Its location provides quick access to I-71 and I-76, making trips to Cleveland, Akron and surrounding communities convenient, while shopping, dining and other amenities are close at hand. Among Lafayette’s most notable attractions is historic Chippewa Lake, Ohio’s largest natural lake, preserved today as part of the Medina County Park District. The township is also home to the Medina County University Center and its surrounding Technology Park, adding an educational and business component to its rural setting. It is a community that offers plenty to explore while maintaining a distinctly relaxed pace of life.
Montville Township
For those looking for room to breathe without giving up convenience, Montville Township offers an attractive setting in which to live and work. Farms and open spaces are interspersed with established neighborhoods, creating a landscape that feels distinctly suburban-rural while remaining close to the amenities of the City of Medina. Interstate connections make Cleveland, Akron and Canton readily accessible, and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is within a convenient drive. The township’s accessibility also makes it an appealing location for businesses, while its neighborhoods and open spaces provide a welcoming environment for residents. With its combination of location, natural surroundings and community atmosphere, Montville Township continues to offer the best of both worlds.
MEDINA TOWNSHIP
Did You Know?
YORK TOWNSHIP Mallet Creek was named for Dan Mallet, considered the first white settler to permanently live along its banks. He also became the community's first postmaster in 1835. York has a presidential connection. Three future presidents — Benjamin Harrison, James A. Garfield and William McKinley — spoke at the First Congregational Church of York. Ohio Gov. George K. Nash was born in Mallet Creek and grew up in the church. The township played a role in the Underground Railroad. Both Mallet Creek and Abbeyville were active stations for freedom seekers traveling north toward Cleveland and, ultimately, Canada. York once had several distinct little communities. The township's history includes Mallet Creek, Abbeyville, Lester and Erhart, each with its own businesses and institutions. At one point, Abbeyville had a store, grist and sawmills, a cheese factory, brewery, wagon shop and blacksmith.

historical account, early settlers initially intended to call the area Mecca, but settler disputes and a conflict with another Ohio town led to the name being changed to Medina. Zenas Hamilton arrived in 1814 and became the first permanent settler. His family lived in a lonely cabin and initially survived largely from what they could hunt — including bears, deer and wild turkeys. The earliest settlers had to improvise their food preparation. Historical accounts say Hamilton's family shelled wheat and rye by hand and boiled it; corn could be put into a leather bag and pounded with an axe head to make a crude meal. Today, the township is an interesting contrast of historic countryside and suburban development

beginning with complete interior demolition and abatement down to the existing concrete slab and masonry. Crews replaced all existing storm and sanitary lines, installed new core systems, including boilers and a penthouse air handler, and upgraded electrical gear, and added three new elevators integrated into the structure. The interior was rebuilt with entirely new layouts for modern offices, courtrooms, and bailiff areas, supported by a robust technology and A/V package featuring cameras, access control, and courtroom audio/visual evidence systems. Exterior improvements included fascia and column repairs, new walks, and landscaping. The project, intended to modernize court facilities while preserving the adjacent historic courthouse, was brought to substantial completion in 15 months.

fires in 1848 and 1870 destroyed significant portions of downtown. Following the 1870 fire, the area was rebuilt with brick in a cohesive Victorian style that still defines the square today. A swarm of bees changed Medina's history. A.I. Root entered the beekeeping industry after noticing a swarm on his jewelry store window in 1869. Medina's courthouse is nearly as old as the city. The first courthouse was built in 1821 and was the first public building in Medina. It was one of the few buildings left standing after the 1870 fire, and is now home to Courthouse Pizzeria. The gazebo isn't Victorian. The current Public Square gazebo is a 1975 replica of a late-19th-century bandstand from Bellville, Ohio. Medina wasn't a city until 1952. It had already been around for 134 years.

Proud to Call Medina Home Jeff Cuddy Vice President Medina County Federal Credit Union “For us, what makes Medina special is the strong sense of community we see every day. As a member-owned community credit union serving Medina County since 1960, we’ve had the privilege of watching generations of families, local businesses and neighbors grow together. We see the spirit of Medina in the people who support one another, shop local, give back and take pride in making our community a better place. Faisal A. Quereshy MD, DDS, MBA, FACS Medical Director Apex Surgical Institute “Having treated patients in Medina since 2003, I have seen firsthand what makes this community exceptional. Our patients have a remarkably high dental IQ. They understand the connection between oral health, overall health, function, and quality of life, and they value investing in their long-term well-being. That understanding comes with high expectations—and we embrace them. Our patients expect clinical excellence, advanced technology, personal attention, and a highquality experience from the first consultation through recovery. Those expectations have continually challenged us to innovate, improve, and elevate the level of care we provide. It is a privilege to care for a community that understands and appreciates the value of exceptional oral and surgical health.”

Celebrating 10 Years of Healthy Smiles
T
ime flies when you are doing what you love! It is hard to believe that South Court Dental is celebrating its tenth anniversary. Looking back, the journey has been rewarding, challenging, and heartwarming all in one. When we first began practicing here, we were immediately comforted by how welcoming the Medina community was. We received open arms not only from the wonderful patients who were already part of the practice but also from the local small business community. Neighbors truly support neighbors here. This tight-knit spirit perfectly reinforces how Dr. Karry Rogus and I approach dentistry: we treat our patients like friends. Because of that philosophy, we have been incredibly fortunate to watch family legacies grow within our practice. We often treat entire generations—from toddlers to grandparents and everyone in between. Caring for your families is an enormous privilege that we never take for granted. As we look toward the next decade, Medina County is changing. We see exciting development and new families moving into the area every day. We love that our community is thriving, but we also love that Medina never loses its small-town roots and values.

To take great care of all our new neighbors, South Court Dental is evolving too. You might notice some fresh faces around the office as we grow our team to ensure every patient gets the time and attention they deserve. But while our team may grow, our core values will never change. You can always rely on us for honest, high-quality dentistry and warm, personal service. Thank you, Medina, for an amazing ten years. Dr. Rogus, myself, and our whole team are so excited to keep smiling with you for many more to come! southcourtdental.com — Dr. Kate Cartwright, Owner, South Court Dental

EDUCATION
A
Making a Difference
t St. Francis Xavier School, education is about more than what happens inside the classroom. It is about helping children grow in faith, knowledge, confidence and character. Serving students from preschool through eighth grade, St. Francis Xavier has a long tradition of providing a strong Catholic education in the heart of Medina. Our students are challenged academically while being known, supported and encouraged by teachers and staff. Our Navigators are performing in the 95th–99th percentile in Reading and the 91st–99th percentile in Mathematics nationally, reflecting our commitment to academic excellence and helping every student reach their potential. Faith is at the center of who we are. Through prayer, weekly Mass, service and opportunities to live the Gospel, students learn that their gifts are meant to make a difference in the lives of others. Students discover what they love through fine arts,
technology, athletics, clubs, leadership, enrichment and academic support. Our WIN, “What I Need,” time provides opportunities for individualized support and enrichment. Most importantly, St. Francis Xavier is a community where students and families are known, welcomed and valued. We believe Catholic education should be accessible to families. St. Francis Xavier accepts the Ohio EdChoice Scholarship, and families may also benefit from tuition assistance through the Angel Scholarship Fund. We invite you to discover a school where children are challenged to achieve, encouraged to serve, inspired to grow in faith and welcomed as part of a family. Rooted in Faith. Stronger Together. BUILDING ON A FOUNDATION OF FAITH SINCE 1981 Founded in 1981
, Medina Christian Academy has had the privilege of supporting families through an educational ministry that has proclaimed the Gospel in the Medina community for over forty years. Initially a ministry of First Baptist Church of Medina, the school was known as First Baptist Christian School until a rebranding process

in the summer of 2000, when it was renamed Medina Christian Academy. Despite the name change, the school continued to operate as a ministry of the church. In the summer of 2018, Medina Christian Academy became an independent ministry from First Baptist Church of Medina, although it has remained in the church building throughout its history. The strong relationship between the church and the school has significantly contributed to the school's growth in the past 8-10 years. Following the expansion of EdChoice opportunities, the school began to grow beyond the church building's capacity. In the summer of 2020, the school board purchased Rustic Hills Golf Course, located just half a mile from the church. This renovation of the country club facility allowed the 6th through 12th-grade programs to thrive. However, the school quickly outgrew this facility, prompting the decision to build a dedicated high school in 2023. As a result of these developments, the school has grown to accommodate 680 students for the fall of 2026, and we are grateful to have the property necessary for this growth. Ten Minutes for Your Skin Y
ou schedule the dental cleaning. You get the bloodwork. Your skin, the only organ that faces the outside world every single day, deserves the same standing appointment.
Dermatology | Aesthetics
Comprehensive Dermatology Care
Here's the case in one sentence: you can't see your own back, the backs of your legs, or your scalp, and those are exactly the places melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma tend to appear. A dermatologist can see what you physically cannot. A full body skin exam is a systematic, head-to-toe evaluation covering the scalp, behind the ears, and between the toes, every place you'd never think to check. It's also faster than you expect. A typical full-body exam takes about ten minutes. Your provider will look carefully at each area of your skin and tell you right away if anything needs a closer look. If a biopsy is recommended, it can often be done during that same visit with local anesthesia. The payoff is enormous. Caught early, skin cancer treatment can carry survival rates as high as 99 percent. Even when surgery is needed, Mohs procedures offer cure rates up to 99 percent while preserving healthy tissue. Waiting isn't necessary either. Apex Skin offers same-day appointments across 16 Northeast Ohio locations, backed by a 4.9 out of 5 patient satisfaction rating. Annual skin checks are recommended for everyone, at every age. Between visits, check yourself monthly after a shower using a full-length mirror. Ten minutes. Make the call. Visit apexskin.com to find a location near you.

Cleveland Clinic orthopaedic surgeons at Medina Hospital specialize in robotic joint replacement surgery.
When patients need a hip or knee replacement, the surgeons talk with their patients about the best surgical approach to relieve pain and restore function. The benefits of robotic surgery include: ■ Less pain during recovery. ■ Lower risk of infection. ■ Reduced blood loss. ■ Shorter hospital stays. During robotic joint replacement surgery, surgeons use CT scans and 3D imaging to create a plan based on the unique anatomy of each patient. They use robotic instruments to place the implant for a precise fit. Most patients spend one night in the hospital following surgery. Select patients who are healthy enough can go home the same day. Most hip replacement patients can resume regular activities within three to four weeks and most knee replacement patients are back to normal activity in five to seven weeks.
From the first steps back to full recovery, Cleveland Clinic Medina Hospital delivers world class joint care to keep you moving. Our personalized treatments are designed to rehabilitate, restore and help prevent future injuries so you can move through life with strength and confidence.
Don’t let pain interfere with your lifestyle. Make an appointment with a Medina Hospital orthopaedic surgeon to see if you’re a candidate for robotic surgery. Call 330.721.5700.

SAVING SMILES
T
Dr. Faisal A. Quereshy, MD, DDS, MBA, FACS, Medical Director, Visage Surgical Institute
he Visage Surgical Institute SAVING SMILES Program was created with a simple purpose: to identify deserving patients whose dental conditions profoundly affect function, confidence, and quality of life, but for whom financial or personal hardship has placed transformative care beyond reach. This year, Ms. Jennifer Miles was selected based on her extraordinary clinical need, personal hardship, and compelling journey. Born with a cleft lip and palate, Jennifer has struggled with her teeth since childhood. She describes a lifetime of avoiding showing her teeth when smiling, difficulty chewing and biting, daily discomfort, and missing the simple joy of smiling confidently in family photographs. As the sole provider for her family,
Jennifer initially hoped dentures would provide an affordable solution. However, severe bone deficiency associated with her cleft anatomy made conventional dentures an inadequate option. When she learned that advanced reconstruction was possible, the cost—more than a year of her salary—made treatment seem unattainable.
2 2 Medina Area Magazine & Community Guide | 2027
Through SAVING SMILES, Visage Surgical Institute will use innovative, patient-specific reconstructive techniques designed to overcome Jennifer’s unique anatomy and provide immediate functional and aesthetic results, transforming a lifelong challenge into a new beginning. Jennifer’s surgical care, implant reconstruction, and associated treatment are being donated by Dr. Faisal A. Quereshy and Visage Surgical Institute. For Jennifer, Saving Smiles represents more than teeth—it is an opportunity to restore function, confidence, dignity, and the freedom to finally smile without hesitation. Follow her journey on Instagram @facesurgeon or Facebook @Faisal A. Quereshy over the next few months for her reveal and final outcomes!
Building Lasting Friendships
S
ince 1994, Medina Sunrise Rotary (MSR) has proven that a small group of committed people can transform a community. As a 501(c)(4) dedicated to social welfare and the protection of children, MSR has donated over $1.5 million to more than 20 local charities and causes— funding scholarships, the Rotary Youth Exchange program, and countless projects that create lasting opportunities for students and families throughout Medina County. But MSR's impact goes beyond fundraising. Members bring that same dedication to hands-on service, showing up for the causes and people who need them most—from maintaining Medina's 9/11 Memorial Park as a lasting tribute, to volunteering at community events year-round. Along the way, they build lasting friendships and make a meaningful difference right where they live and work. Want to get involved, meet new people, and be part of something bigger than yourself? Building a Better Community
E
very person deserves a place to call home, a community that shows up when it matters most, and an opportunity to live their best life. That’s the belief that has guided The Society since 1953, when a group of parents decided their children deserved more than the horrific conditions of a state institution and set out to create something better themselves. More than 73 years later, that work continues. Our community-based residential homes across Medina County give individuals a place to call their own. Our Link Day Programs open doors to new skills and community connections. Our Resource Center loans the community medical equipment at no cost. And our People Together Program builds acceptance at an early age, teaching children in local schools what it means to live with a disability. When everyone has the chance to belong, the whole community is better for it. Inspiring a Lifetime of Learning
I
n 2027 Medina Library will celebrate 120 years! It all started when Franklin Sylvester donated the funds to build the library on the Square. Since then, what is now the Medina Library has had two major expansions to become what it is today, but the original library can still be seen in the 1907 Room. MCDL has six locations and a Bookmobile and is a CLEVNET
member, which provides patrons access to materials from more than 45 libraries throughout northern Ohio. Your library is so much more than books. We process passports, have a Makerspace full of equipment, free computer use, Wi-Fi, copies/faxes/ scans, a Tools & Tech collection of two-dozen useful gadgets from blood pressure monitors to pickleball sets, and free meeting room use. Our entire goal is to make your life better, easier, more fun and save you money, since (almost) everything we do is FREE. MCDL is known in the community for being the place for early childhood literacy. Recently expanded story time offerings have led to an attendance boom. We help shape young lives, enrich them with literacy skills and curiosity, and inspire a desire for
knowledge and exploration that lasts a lifetime. We want people to rely on their library for whatever their needs. Libraries are the only place in most towns that are free, open to everyone, and exist to serve your technology, educational, entertainment, and social needs. Browse our website for just a few minutes and you will find something that interests you at www.mcdl.info.
