ILER AERIAL IMAGING CITY OF MEDINA MAIN STREET MEDINA
Image Builders Marketing, Inc. would like to extend a special thank you to all of the business organizations and individuals who take an active and enthusiastic role in the Medina Magazine & Community Guide, especially our advertisers who provide the financial support to make this a successful community project. We hope that you enjoy the informative features contained in this publication and will keep it as a reference guide for community and advertiser information.
The City of Medina is pleased to present to you the 18th annual Medina Area Magazine and Community Guide. Thanks to the generous sponsorships from our local businesses and organizations, this publication is brought to you free of charge. In turn, please support these businesses with your patronage and “Shop Medina” whenever you can.
I am very pleased to share with you that the Medina business community is experiencing major growth with more than twenty ribbon cuttings for new businesses in 2024, the 25th Anniversary of the Gardener’s Cottage, plus the long-awaited groundbreaking for new major retailers. Acme Fresh Market, at the south end of town, is building a 56,360-square-foot grocery store. Equally exciting is the demolition of the K-Mart store,
which had been vacant for more than eleven years, and making way for the new 160,000-square-foot Meijer store. Capping off the building boom is the 77-room Legacy Hotel and Event Center being constructed in the Historic District of Medina. The hotel will have restaurants, a rooftop bar, and workout room. The event center will be in a separate building at the rear of the hotel. The developers are also adding a large parking lot on South Elmwood Street. All of these projects are scheduled to open in 2025.
I am also proud to share that Medina is making a name for itself. In the past year, Medina was selected as one of the top 20 Best Places to Live in Northeast Ohio by Cleveland Magazine. Ohio Magazine picked Medina as one of the “Most Charming Towns for the Holidays”. Medina was selected by
cleveland.com as one of “Northeast Ohio’s 14 Best Towns in Ohio to Visit This Holiday”, and Midwest Living wrote an entire “Holiday Itinerary for Medina, OH”. I fully expect us to receive similar accolades in the future.
Our theme this year is “Make Memories in Medina”, and I assure you that Medina can provide you with a lot of opportunities to make great family memories. Pick up one of the city’s 2024-2025 Visitor Guides at city hall or from any of our merchants so you don’t miss out on any of the memory-making events going on in the Historic District and South Town.
Whether you live here or are just here for a visit, take time to appreciate the original late 1800s Victorian architecture that has been meticulously restored. Other towns spend millions trying to copy the look of our downtown. Be sure to take time for a fine dining experience or a more informal meal in one of our many restaurants. Medina can even offer you a walking beer tour! Looking for that special gift? I’ll bet you can find it in one of our local shops or at the 150-year-old Root Candles. Take time to make Medina memories with family and friends.
We are fortunate that Medina has award-winning public, parochial, and career tech schools, and an excellent public library system. We have access to world-class health care, and our recreation center and parks systems provide us with excellent options for fitness and wellness activities. We are a caring community and are fortunate to have safe streets and neighborhoods. Memories are important, so let Medina help you make lots of special ones. As Dr. Seuss once said, “Sometimes you will never know the true value of a moment until it becomes a memory.”
Sincerely,
Dennis Hanwell
Dennis Hanwell Mayor, The City of Medina
Small Town Ambiance
By Ken McEntee
Imbuing the ambiance of small-town America, Medina, with its iconic Public Square surrounded by stimulating attractions and an eclectic array of restaurants and shops, has become a desired destination for visitors. A new downtown hotel will soon make it more convenient for guests to enjoy the town’s old-fashioned charm, suggested Mayor Dennis Hanwell. “We get a lot of visitors, including many people who are involved with the businesses in our industrial corridor,” Hanwell said. “They rave about how beautiful the town is, but they can’t spend as much time as they would like to because there is nowhere to stay downtown.”
The locally-owned four-story, 77-room Legacy Hotel, to be located on South Court Street near the Castle Noel Christmas museum, will change that when it opens in late 2025, Hanwell said. “It will be a game changer for the Downtown area,” he said. “It will have a couple high-end restaurants inside, an event center, and a rooftop bar with glass from where you will be able to view the better part of the city.”
Kimberly Marshall, the city’s economic development director said the event center will be an ideal venue for weddings and business events. In fact, she added that the hotel already has a wedding booked for 2026. “We have more than 300 wedding ceremonies or wedding photos done on the square every year, she said. “But people come just for the ceremony or the pictures, and then they leave because there is nowhere to stay here. So the hotel will have an economic impact just by capturing those people for three days. They could have the rehearsal, the ceremony, and the

Make Memories in Medina
Located near both Cleveland and Akron, Medina is a truly inviting place to live, visit, and make amazing memories with friends and family. The successful preservation of our historic district has helped drive tourism and boost the growth of locally owned small businesses and now boasts numerous restaurants, brewpubs, coffee spots, and unique shops.
Much of community life centers around beautiful Medina Public Square where a Victorian gazebo provides central focus to farmers markets, free concerts, parades, and other events — our annual Candlelight Walk is one of the best in the area! Other attractions include a Christmas museum, go-karting, gaming, vintage car shows, historical neighborhoods and house museums, a tea room, and more.
We welcome you to our All-American hometown with the lifestyle and sense of community families desire, where business is encouraged and celebrated, and where old-school values meet new-town ideas to make this one of northeast Ohio’s fastest growing communities.

reception, then spend some time visiting the attractions in the city, like Castle Noel, Root Candles, or Foundry Social. It will be an opportunity to showcase the whole city.”
Hanwell said the city government is working with Main Street Medina—a non-profit civic organization—and the Chamber of Commerce to make Medina a destination town.
Charm and excitement
“The Square itself, with those historic Victorian buildings surrounding it, is a draw,” Hanwell said. “It's kind of like a Hallmark postcard. The events and activities on the square and throughout the nine-block historic area keep the town vibrant and are very helpful to our business community.”
The activity is now expanding another four blocks to an area called South Town, which hosts a variety of arts and music events.
Also on the Square, the city’s municipal court will soon occupy a portion of the old Medina County Courthouse, which was recently replaced by a new four-story building. “The ‘1969 Courthouse’ is more than double the size of our existing municipal court building,” Hanwell said. “Our plan is to renovate the building and lease it from the county to house our municipal court. We hope to move in by the end of 2025.”
Commercial Development
New retail development in Medina’s bustling north end will provide residents with additional shopping options, Marshall noted. The biggest project there is a new $20 million Meijer supercenter on the site of the closed-down Kmart store on North Court Street. “That development will be great for that whole area because it will help to fill the vacancies that resulted when Kmart closed 11 years ago,” Marshall said. Hanwell said the Meijer store is expected to open in the winter of 2025.
On the southern side of town, an Acme Fresh Market store is being built at the corner of Route 3 and High Pointe Drive.
Announcements and openings of other new Medina businesses, most locally owned, continued in 2024. They included:
• Aladdin’s Restaurant
• Bickle Insurance
• Ciao Bella Beauty Bar
• Elements Medina
• Trim Clinics
• JAFB Brewery (opening 2025)
• Hemingways Underground
• Romancing the Walls
• Reform & Restore Pilates

is working to upgrade its ample network of trails for easy access to parks and recreational areas, Marshall said. “We have great trails and great parks, but the problem is the trails are not all connected,” she said “It’s very fragmented. That’s why we just wrapped up a multipurpose trail connectivity study to find out how we can connect all of the trails.”
The intended result will be the connection of Medina County trails with city trails.
“There is a Chippewa Lake Trail that then comes up through a residential area where Acme is being built on Route 3,” Hanwell said. “We put bike lanes along Route 3 to get over to Broadway and extending to the Square. The county is going to extend it to connect all the way to Reagan Parkway and to the North Court Street corridor. From there to Chippewa Lake will be one of the largest connected trails in the state.” Marshall said new trails in the city’s industrial zone off Lake Road will enable people to bicycle to work while safely avoiding truck traffic.
Community-Oriented Government
Hanwell said the city’s philosophy of “communityoriented government” has helped to make residents happy and proud of their town. “If there is a problem somewhere in town, it’s every city employee’s responsibility to fix it,” he said. “City employees don’t say ‘that’s not my job’ when we see something that needs to be done. If there is a defect in the street for example, it doesn’t matter whether somebody from the Parks Department or a clerk at City Hall spots it—it’s all of our responsibility to get it reported and get it corrected before somebody damages a tire. The goal is to make sure that even small problems are fixed promptly so that the city always looks well-kept, clean, and pretty. When I was with the police department [including almost 13 years as chief], we called it a community-oriented policing model. We’ve adopted that into our communityoriented government model.”
A similar concept is employed when working with the local business community, Hanwell said. “We want to make
it easy for existing businesses and new businesses who are interested in coming here,” the mayor said. “Anytime a new business is looking to come to town we do what's called a pre-development meeting. We bring all of our department heads in with the utilities and the county economic development people for one meeting so the business people don't have to come back 15 times talking to different groups. It makes things easier for them. The head of real estate for Meijer told us he's been in multiple states and has never seen a city as responsive as we are.”

Medina City School District
FOSTERING GROWTH, RESILIENCE, INTEGRITY , AND TEAMWORK
The Medina City School District spans approximately 52 square miles, covering the City of Medina, Medina, and Montville Townships, and a portion of Lafayette Township. Currently, the District serves around 5,800 students. Two of the District's seven elementary schools were repurposed in response to changing enrollment patterns at the end of the 2023-2024 school year. This refined footprint for the 2024-2025 school year includes five elementary schools: Eliza Northrop, Ella Canavan, H.G. Blake, Ralph E. Waite, and Sidney Fenn, two middle schools, A.I. Root and Claggett, and Medina High School. The District further supports student needs with the Evolve Academy, an alternative school serving students within and outside the county, and Helping Hands Preschool at Heritage, which nurtures our youngest Bees.
This year, the District has embraced the theme “Medina Bees Have G.R.I.T. (Growth, Resilience, Integrity, and Teamwork).” Our focus is on enhancing hands-on learning and aligns with the District’s Portrait of a Bee. We encourage our staff to innovate and explore creative teaching approaches, all aiming to expand student-centered learning opportunities. Across all grade levels, students can engage in creative projects within their Makerspaces. Programs like Project Lead the Way, in partnership with the Medina County Career Center, enable middle and high
school students to gain practical, real-world skills. Medina High School students can also explore various careers through the Career Exploration Opportunities program. To provide more robust academic options, Medina High School offers twenty-one Advanced Placement (AP) course offerings, and middle and high school students continue to thrive with elective course offerings. As a result, Medina High School is among the top-ranked public schools in Northeast Ohio. According to U.S. News and World Report, the high school is ranked #68 in Ohio, #19 in the Cleveland Metropolitan Area, and #2 in Medina County.
Medina City School District takes pride in being a vital part of the community, believing that strong schools are the cornerstone of a strong community.

How Westfield® and Ting Help Prevent Fires
At Westfield, your homeowners policy is just the beginning. We’ve teamed up with Ting to help protect your home and family from electrical fires.* Through our complimentary program, policyholders can receive Ting, a fire prevention sensor and service, that monitors their home’s electrical system for hazards that could lead to fires.
How It Works
Ting isn’t just a plug-in device — it’s a complete, yet simple system. After plugging the sensor into an outlet and connecting it to Wi-Fi via the Ting app, it monitors your home for arcing, the leading cause of electrical fires. If a problem is detected, such as a malfunctioning outlet or appliance, you’ll receive an alert on your phone. A member of Ting’s Fire Safety Team will contact you to guide you through the repair steps needed

to help keep you safe. If the issue requires electrical work, Ting will arrange for a licensed electrician and cover labor repair costs up to $1,000.
Why Ting Is a Smart Move
Westfield policyholders appreciate the added peace of mind the program offers. One user shared, “Ting saved me from a possible fire hazard that could have destroyed my house. I highly recommend everyone install a Ting unit.”
Ting takes just two minutes to install and only requires an outlet, Wi-Fi, and a smartphone. Help protect your home from electrical hazards with Ting, free for three years with your Westfield homeowners policy. Visit wf.insure/why-ting to learn more.

Robot-Assisted Joint Replacements
Cleveland Clinic orthopaedic surgeons at Medina Hospital, specialize in robotic joint replacement surgery. When patients need a hip or knee replacement, the surgeons talk with their patients about the best surgical approach to relieve pain and restore function. The benefits of robotic surgery include:
• Less pain during recovery.
• Lower risk of infection.
• Reduced blood loss.
• Shorter hospital stays.
During robotic joint replacement surgery, surgeons use CT scans and 3D imaging to create a plan based on the unique anatomy of each patient. They use robotic instruments to place the implant for a precise fit.
Most patients spend one night in the hospital following surgery. Select patients who are healthy enough can go home the same day. Most hip replacement patients can resume regular activities within three to four
weeks and most knee replacement patients are back to normal activity in five to seven weeks.
Don’t let pain interfere with your lifestyle. Make an appointment with a Medina Hospital orthopaedic surgeon to see if you’re a candidate for robotic surgery. Call 330.721.5700.

MAKE PREVENTION A PRIORITY
It is very important to consider taking preventative measures to stay healthy. Preventative care could include scheduling an annual exam or screenings, receiving recommended immunizations, and keeping track of your numbers.

The Medina County Health Department’s Health Center offers a wide variety of services to meet your needs. Our primary care providers will help you stay on track and provide guidance. We believe healthcare should be accessible and affordable to everyone, which is why we offer both in-person and telehealth appointments. To ensure everyone can receive the care they need, we accept people of all ages, with or without insurance. To schedule an appointment, call 330-723-9688, option 1, or visit www.medinahealth.org for more info.

BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER
In 1976 Millard and Linda Fuller gave birth to a vision that believed everyone deserved a decent place to live. Over the last 48 years, Habitat for Humanity has improved the shelter of over 22 million people. Habitat for Humanity of Medina County joined with this vision back in 1991 and over the last 33 years has built 52 homes across our county. This was accomplished because of our committed volunteers both on our build site and at ReStore, along with generous financial supporters of Habitat. As we move forward our mission remains the same. To provide decent, safe, and affordable shelter to qualified households in Medina County. We strive to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope.

We are the Philanthropic Cornerstone of Medina County! The Medina County Community Foundation (MCCF) connects caring people with the charities that need them. If you’re looking for a way to make a difference, MCCF offers a variety of fund types to suit your philanthropic goals.
MCCF was created by concerned county leaders as the first independent Community Foundation in Medina County from the original MCCFund, created over 30 years ago and held with other Medina County sub-funds at the Akron Community Foundation.
Thanks to the early philanthropic vision, MCCF will continue to support Medina County residents by being good stewards and growing assets to ensure the financial sustainability of our funds well into the future. Like other foundations, MCCF distributes grants for the betterment of our community. Let us introduce you to our charitable organization network that supports what’s most important to you! Visit www.medinaccf.org to learn more about MCCF.

BUILDING Positive Relationships
Last summer, the MCPAL (Medina County Police Activities League) ice cream truck outfitted with emergency lights, sirens, and waffle cone wrap made its debut on Medina Ohio’s historical square. Staff members of the Medina County Police Activities League and law enforcement served up ice cream and smiles to citizens and families as part of their community outreach initiative. A generous start-up donation from Sunrise Rotary Club and Fred Martin Superstore enabled the nonprofit organization to retrofit a cargo van with ice cream freezers and an order window, taking it on the road to neighborhood apartment complexes, housing developments, and community events every summer.
“The ice cream truck is a unique way for law enforcement to interact with the community to build positive relationships. In today’s environment, it is more important than ever for the community and law enforcement to have positive interaction and conversations. A simple treat, like ice cream, will break down barriers and allow

conversations to happen organically.” explains Sheriff Terry Grice, Executive Director. “It is based on the conviction that young people, if reached early enough, can develop strong, positive attitudes towards law enforcement officers and be more likely to respect the laws that officers enforce.”
Since 2010, MCPAL has provided a safe, fun environment for over 400 children each year, ages eight to twenty throughout Medina County. Law enforcement volunteers visit Medina County public elementary buildings to play games and sports with students after school; coordinate the March Madness Basketball League; host Shop with a Cop at Christmas; and schedule special summer events. “Students look forward to MCPAL days.
They eagerly await the chance to interact and play games with the volunteers of the program after school. Students who participate have found the program engaging, entertaining, and it helps them to build positive relationships with the officers who run the program.” comments Andy Riegelmayer, MCS elementary teacher.
Annual fundraisers, including a spring Golf Outing at Westfield Country Club and a fall Mix & Mingle at Blue Heron Event Center, and ongoing support from local businesses and community members are used directly to support MCPAL’s programs.
