My wife and I, as well as our two adult children, have lived here in this great city for over 20 years, and I can honestly say that Brunswick is where it all comes together!

Brunswick continues to do an excellent job serving our residents. We have many dedicated people here at City Hall who do exceptional work, and their number one priority is to serve you!

Our City is a bustling community of 37,000 people and is situated right on I-71 between Cleveland and Akron. We are an ideal location for businesses, and City Hall is always ready to help businesses relocate here, and help existing businesses expand and thrive.

We have an excellent school system which has access to Cuyahoga Community College, as well as The University of Akron’s Medina County University Center. These are all within the city or very close by.

Over the past fifteen years, our city has become a

medical mecca. The Cleveland Clinic, University Hospital, and MetroHealth have opened and operated facilities here. We want to make sure that our residents have great choices when deciding on medical care.

Brunswick has so many beautiful parks! Our newest one, Brunswick Lake Park, is home to the Susan Hambley Nature Center, which was named after my former colleague on Council. The park has a fitness path, fishing, and all kinds of wildlife. Also, the Brunswick Recreation Center offers members numerous opportunities to stay fit, stay healthy, and stay connected to the community.

As mayor, I am very proud of the Brunswick City workers who do an excellent job every day to make sure that our city protects and serves its residents and businesses. As you travel around Brunswick and meet its people, you will see that Brunswick is really where it all comes together.

The Friendliest Community Around!

Sixty years ago come December, Captain Ted Neura, a Brunswick High School graduate, was killed in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta on his way home from his tour of duty. While serving in Vietnam, Neura established an orphanage that provided recreational areas for local youth. Neura Park, on Brunswick’s western end of Route 303, was dedicated in his honor in 1975.

Last fall, an inclusive playground that allows children of all physical abilities to play together, opened in the park. The playground, which includes equipment designed for wheelchairs, quiet areas for kids who have sensory-related challenges and other features, became a town project that involved

of the unifying things in our city,” Falconi said.

The playground developed from a void recognized by Leann Alferio, a Brunswick school teacher who works with special needs students. “We’re very happy that the playground is there,” Falconi said. “It has rejuvenated Neura Park. And I know that the kids are happy it’s there. The important thing is that it’s something that all kids can enjoy and disabilities are not a hindrance to having fun.”

At the southern end of the city, another project — a multicultural mixed-use market planned on Route 42, just north of Sleepy Hollow Road — may help to spur

economic development in the area, Falconi said. “We want to make sure that we can bring in more businesses to Pearl Road (Route 42) in that area,” he said. “Market 42 is an excellent vehicle to help make that happen.”

Market 42 — which has been compared to Cleveland’s famous West Side Market — is scheduled to open in the spring of 2024. It is expected to include a seasonal farmer’s market, restaurants and 18 townhouses, along with a nature trail through adjacent wetlands, said Nick Kyriazis, the project’s developer. “It’s an exciting project and I think it’s going to be a good addition to that corridor there,” he

said. “In the city’s five year plan, they want to transform that corridor into a commercial area and I think this project will spearhead more development in the area. I thought it would be a good idea to put something there to bring in fresh local produce and meats and also have restaurants where people from Brunswick, Medina and Strongsville can come to.”

As of June, the market, which will host about 30 vendors, was about 60 percent occupied before construction had started, Kyriazis said. “We have a great local brewery, a butcher shop and a fish store coming in among other businesses,” he said. “We have restaurants including Mediterranean food, barbecue, Italian and an ice cream shop.”

development area with the addition of all the new stores that have come in, like Meijer [Supercenter, which opened in May 2022],” Smith said.

Debbie Boehmke, executive director of the Northern Medina County Chamber Alliance, said business is thriving in Brunswick. Many of the city’s new and existing businesses are locally owned, she noted. “The chamber prides itself in supporting local, family-owned businesses from The Tangled Vine, which is a cute little coffee and wine shop, to the Grounded Bean, which is a brand-new coffee shop on Pearl Road [in the former Gyro George location] to MDG Flooring,” Boehmke said. “The local businesses here all support one another. We are a close community of people who love to connect with each other.”

Along with ample shopping and dining options, Brunswick businesses also offer family entertainment in such venues as Scene 75 and Mapleside Farms.

“There is so much to do in this beautiful city of ours,” Boehmke said.

Sheila Watson, real estate broker and owner of RE/MAX Omega, agrees. “Brunswick is a great place to raise a family,” she said. “I moved here when I was 12 years old, married my high school boyfriend and raised my kids here. We are a safe community with down-toearth, friendly people.”

That may be one reason why the city’s housing market is strong. “Homes are selling over asking price,” she said.

“There’s a waiting line because we have so many people looking to buy.”

When Smith moved to Northeast Ohio from Michigan about 34 years ago, Brunswick stood out as a place to call home, he recalled. “What I saw then is still true today — I think Brunswick is one of the friendliest communities that I visited,” he said. “I went to all these different cities and I didn’t know anything about any of them, but the one I visited that seemed the friendliest was Brunswick. And I still think it’s that way today.”

How is Brunswick’s Form of Government Different than Medina’s or Strongsville’s?

Brunswick has a council-manager form of government, while both Medina and Strongsville have a strong-mayor form of government.

• In a council-manager form of government, the council is the governing body of the city elected by the public, and the city manager is hired by council to carry out the policies it establishes.

• In Brunswick, the council consists of seven members. There are four (4) ward council members representing specific geographic areas and three (3) atlarge council members who represent the entire city.

• Our Mayor is recognized as the ceremonial head of Brunswick and presides at regularly scheduled council meetings. He also presides over Mayor’s Court. City Council meetings are generally held in the Council Chambers at Brunswick City Hall, 4095 Center Road on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month at 7:30 pm.

residents. The 13 square mile town is strategically located right on I-71, which provides convenient access for workplace commuters as well as businesses that rely on highway transportation, Falconi noted. “Brunswick is right in the middle of everything,” he said. “We are close to both Cleveland and Akron, and we’re a short drive to Cleveland Hopkins Airport. We are one of the few cities with industrial parks right next to an interstate highway. If you’re a business, obviously you want to be where the action is. Brunswick offers that strategic location with the advantage of having lower taxes than you have in most of Cuyahoga and Summit counties.”

Balancing out the city’s commercial zones, Brunswick also has about 350 acres of parkland, made up of 23 community and neighborhood parks. Notable among them is 75acre Brunswick Lake Park, which features a one-mile walking trail with two boardwalks encircling the lake. The trail provides easy walking access to the Susan Hambley Nature Center. “We have numerous parks that provide recreation whether you want to go to the playground at Neura Park or you want to walk around the trail at Brunswick Lake or visit the nature center,” Falconi said.

Play at the New Playground!

Neura Park, Brunswick’s oldest park, is located at 4637 Center Road and offers many facilities for both active and passive uses. The community park has a large parking area, wooded areas, a creek, and a new, all-inclusive playground constructed in 2022.

The playground is designed to ensure physical and social inclusion, encouraging children of all physical abilities to play together. It includes equipment designed for wheelchairs, quiet areas for kids who have sensoryrelated challenges, and other unique features. These improvements to the park were by volunteer efforts and involved residents, local businesses, civic organizations and the town’s government.

Neura Park is named after Capt. Theodore P. Neura, who was the first serviceman from Brunswick to die in the Vietnam conflict (December 12, 1963). The park was dedicated in 1975.

Cuyahoga Community College Where Futures Begin

Aproud Brunswick resident for over 30 years, Elizabeth Zeszotek serves as the director of the Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) Brunswick University Center (BUC), overseeing enrollment initiatives and student and community engagement efforts. During her lengthy career in higher education, Zeszotek has gained extensive experience helping students reach their educational goals and implementing and overseeing large-and small-scale projects.

Zeszotek holds a bachelor’s degree in organizational communication from Kent State University and a master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of Akron. She is also a graduate of Tri-C’s Mandel Leadership program. Most recently, Zeszotek joined the Brunswick Rotary Club and serves as Tri-C’s representative for various local chamber and council organizations.

Tri-C, Ohio’s first community college, is celebrating its 60th anniversary in September. The College has served as an educational partner in Brunswick for more than a decade, providing college credit to high school students and coursework for community members seeking a college degree or professional development. Zeszotek is excited to continue BUC’s legacy of supporting the residents of southern Cuyahoga and Medina counties.

Empowering Students

The 2022-2023 school year was filled with numerous student accomplishments that have left a lasting impact on the school community. The National Merit Scholarship Foundation recognized six Brunswick High School students for academic excellence in the fall. In the spring, four of these students, Jordan Dye, Meghan Kellem, Maeve McGinnis, and Nolan Wickes, earned the distinction of being National Merit Scholarship Finalists. These students represent the top 1% of students in the country. Additionally, a team of ten Brunswick High School students participated in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Student Visionaries of the Year Campaign. Led by junior Michael Romano, this team was one of only five in northeastern Ohio to raise over $50,000 to help fund a cure and improve the quality of life for patients with blood cancers.

Amidst the changes in the workforce and higher education through the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) emphasizes the importance of helping students build prosperous and purposeful lives. That importance was reiterated by the inauguration of the College’s fifth president, Michael A. Baston, on April 14, 2023. During his candidacy, Baston made three promises for his presidency:

Founded in 1963 as Ohio’s first and largest community college, Tri-C has provided high-quality, affordable education for more than 1 million community members across Northeast Ohio. improvements to two elementary school campuses, and fund improvements to the Brunswick High School campus. In the coming months, a visioning committee of students, staff, and community members will begin the work of designing the new building. Construction is expected to start in the fall of 2024, and we anticipate opening the building during the 2026-2027 school year.

Consistent with state and county trends, enrollment across BCSD is expected to decline steadily over the next ten years. In order to continue to act as good stewards of taxpayer dollars, Towslee students and staff will be shifted to our other six elementary schools in a way that causes the least disruption to students.

The BCSD Treasurer’s Department earned the Auditor of State Award for the third consecutive year. Less than 6 percent of publicly audited organizations earn this award annually. While visiting the district in October, Auditor of State Keith Faber noted the “extraordinary” accomplishment of earning this award in consecutive years gives BCSD the distinction of being “among the best of the best” and “cutting edge” among public entities.

3 cups cabbage, chopped

1 red apple, unpeeled, cored, and chopped

1 Granny Smith apple, unpeeled, cored, and chopped

1 carrot, grated

1/2 cup red bell pepper, finely chopped

2 green onions, finely chopped

1/3 cup mayonnaise

1/3 cup brown sugar

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1. In a large bowl, combine the cabbage, red apple, Granny Smith apple, carrot, red bell pepper, and green onion.

2. In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, brown sugar, and lemon juice.

3. Pour the dressing over the salad.

4. Serve.

There are “selling features” and items that are “expected” in a home. For example, a new furnace is

a selling feature; everyone expects a home to have a furnace, but an old furnace will have the buyer reducing their offer price because replacement will be in the future. Remodeled kitchens and baths add value. Most buyers

have home inspections. Items that need repair or replacement are GFCI in baths, laundry, and kitchen — double taps in electrical boxes. You can help by having the fireplace, furnace, and air conditioning cleaned and checked before putting the home on the market.
