Avon’s Unique Character

One of the things that makes Avon a unique town is that it has “a little bit of everything for everybody,” said Mayor Bryan Jensen. “We have virtually everything you need right here in town, so you never have to leave if you don’t want to. We have had a lot of development, but there is still some farmland and open areas. We're a safe community, and residents can feel confident that our safety forces are there for them if they need them.”
Jensen said residents are fortunate to enjoy abundant amenities, from plentiful shopping to compelling activities for everybody, from young children to seniors. “We have convenient shopping like the Meijer and Heinen’s supermarkets and stores like Costco and Target, plus a lot of small, family-owned businesses that continue to contribute to the city’s small town charm, the mayor said.
Bustling retail regions, a flourishing industrial zone, and abundant health and medical facilities are balanced by
Avon’s quiet parks and green spaces, which offer residents a tranquil respite in nature. Avon’s bustling business community continues to expand. “We opened Topgolf [in September, on Chester Road, near the I-90 and Nagel Road intersection], and it was exciting to have it come on,” Jensen said. “The Cleveland Clinic, our largest employer, announced plans to build another bed tower and add some more space for specialists there.”
Also near the Nagel Road interchange, the Rafih Auto Group plans to establish luxury auto dealerships, including Mercedes-Benz and Porsche operations, and possibly relocate Aston Martin, Bentley, and Rolls-Royce dealerships from North Olmsted. “It gives anybody who is shopping for a car another avenue along with the [Joyce Buick GMC dealership on Chester Road],” Jensen said.
Cleveland Clinic’s $340 million expansion of its Avon campus, which includes Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital and the Richard E. Jacobs Family Health Center, is intended
to “meet increasing demand for healthcare services in the rapidly growing west-side suburbs of the Cleveland area,” the Clinic announced. The project, which is scheduled for completion in 2028, will include new operating rooms and expanded surgical services, a larger emergency department, about 90 new exam rooms, and a new parking garage.
Avon, Jensen said, is an ideal place to operate a business. “We’re in such a great location being right up against I-90,” he said. “It’s excellent exposure for our business, and it makes them easy to get to.”
Jensen said the Planning and Economic Development division of the city’s Planning Department, overseen by Pam Fechter, Planning and Economic Development Coordinator, makes it easy for businesses to establish themselves in Avon. “Once they decide that they want to be here in Avon, we help them through the process quicker and easier so it isn’t so overwhelming,” he said.
While Cleveland Clinic and Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems are notable among the city’s largest employers, Avon boasts an eclectic assemblage of smaller, locally-owned businesses along with large national retail stores like WalMart, Costco, Lowe’s, and Home Depot. “A strong business sector stabilizes the city government in terms of funding the amenities we offer,” Jensen said. “People like convenient services like leaf pickup, branch chipping, and good roads. It's the commercial businesses that generate the funds that allow us to do those things.”
Residents who value parks and recreational activities can enjoy multiple city parks with playgrounds and open space, a nature preserve with hiking trails, a community recreation center with a pool, and Miller Nature Preserve—a 145-acre botanical and woodland attraction managed by the Lorain County Metro Parks. The nature preserve combines natural trails with indoor and outdoor gardens, including a 5,000-square-foot conservatory that displays plant specimens from around the world.
At the I-90/Route 611 interchange, ForeFront Field— the home of the independent Frontier League Lake Erie Crushers minor league baseball team—offers additional local recreational opportunities. Just north of the stadium, the French Creek Family YMCA offers a variety of programs.
Amidst Avon’s new neighborhoods and commercial development, the community is also focused on preservation of its history, Jensen said. One example is a current community development initiative on land the city recently acquired to create a gathering space, public amenities, and walking trails. The project includes repurposing a school administration building that the city government recently
purchased from the Avon School District into a new City Hall and community facility. “Preserving the old school building is another way to preserve Avon's history,” he said. He said the site will include a community gathering place for education, meetings, events, and recreation. While the city government expects to move into the building in May 2026, longer-term plans include adding walking trails and parks on the property.
Local civic organizations are instrumental in organizing events and activities, as well as preserving the city’s history, Jensen said. “Our historical society does a great job of preserving our history, and we have a garden club that helps with maintaining the beauty of the city,” he said. “The French Creek Foundation does a wonderful job of putting together families and doing different activities throughout the city.”

Avon Lake is a growing community with big-town amenities—yet it has maintained its small town charm, said Mayor Mark Spaetzel. “That’s one of the things that makes people want to live here,” he said. “We’re a safe community with an award-winning public safety team, strong public services, and our taxes have been historically low. When you combine all of that, you have a very nice quality of life.”
Touting its location on the shores of Lake Erie, Spaetzel said the city’s vision is to build a legacy as Ohio's premier lakeside city—“a place where family values, thoughtful economic development, small town character and the natural beauty of Lake Erie converge.” “Being on the lake makes us one of the unique communities in Ohio,” Spaetzel said. “I feel like we need to do a better job of touting that as a
major benefit for our community, and to do that, we want to expand our lakefront access.”
Once primarily an agricultural area, Avon Lake now boasts a solid business mix of large companies like Ford Motor Co. and Avient Corp., along with an array of smaller, locally-owned businesses, the mayor said. “We have a good zoning map with sections of our town dedicated to residential, commercial, and industrial areas,” Spaetzel said. “We don’t have direct highway access like Avon to our south, but what we do have is a great number of small businesses that people just love to go to, like Emilie's Coffee House at Route 83 and Walker Road. It's a family business of Avon Lake residents that has done tremendously well and is an example of what does well in Avon Lake—small, attentive businesses.”

Commercial and industrial businesses are vitally important to keep income taxes low, Spaetzel said. “We're still at a 1.5% income tax rate, which is the second lowest rate in Lorain County, and we give a 100 percent credit to residents who work and pay income tax in other cities,” he said. “Seventy-five percent of Avon Lake residents work outside the city, which means they get 100 percent credit on their taxes. If our 0.4 percent income tax levy passes in May, we're still going to be lower than most other cities around.” The levy, which will be on the May ballot, would be in effect for five years and would fund road improvements, stormwater projects, and other capital projects. If it passes, the city plans to eliminate a 1.5-mill operating property tax, the mayor said.
Spaetzel said the city government works to make it easier to do business in the city, whether for existing companies or businesses looking to start up in Avon Lake. “If a new business wants to come into Avon Lake, trying to navigate through planning, zoning, community development, and all these different layers that you have to go through can be very complex and frustrating,” he said. “So years ago, we established the Developmental Review Committee, which is the first stop for any business that wants to come into Avon Lake. Before they spend a lot of money—before they make major decisions that could cost them big—we walk them
through the process of what they need to do. That way, there are no surprises when a business is ready to come to Avon Lake. For current businesses, we're very active in helping to promote them. We do ribbon cuttings for every business that starts out, and we promote them on our community channels. We have what's called a job growth incentive program, where if the companies here in Avon Lake increase their income tax receipts each year, then a certain amount of that percentage of that income tax increase goes back to the company as an incentive for them to stay in the community.”
The “Shop Local” program is an annual campaign organized by the city’s economic development department to encourage residents to spend money at locally owned businesses and restaurants during the months of November and December.
Complementing the city’s business sector, Avon Lake offers a variety of parks and recreational options, Spaetzel said. The city operates two lakefront parks: Veterans Memorial Park at the end of Route 83 and Lake Road, and Miller Road Park, at Miller Road and Lake Road, which has the boat launch and the fishing pier. “The closing and demolition of the Avon Lake Power Plant [owned by Charah Solutions Inc. through its subsidiary Avon Lake Environmental Redevelopment Group,] opens up an opportunity for our community to add 23 acres of parkland on the lake to increase that availability—not only to Avon Lake residents, but regionally to access the lake,” Spaetzel said. “We're working diligently on that project to add that park to Avon Lake.” The final stage of demolition was completed in December 2024.
The city government’s purchase in December 2025 of the former Erieview Elementary School and its 9.5-acre property will create additional recreational opportunities, Spaetzel said. The city government plans to convert the building into a multi-generational community center with recreational programs and community space.
Spaetzel said local civic and charity organizations are essential in contributing to the character of the Avon Lake community. “We have 21 nonprofit civic groups such as Rotary, Kiwanis, athletic boosters, and Mighty Goliath Productions—our theater group, that we have formed into a group called the Community Council,” he said. “They meet quarterly throughout the year and provide different things in their own ways to the community.”

AVON LAKE CITY SCHOOLS
The ’25-’26 school year in the ALCS has laid a foundation that will positively impact an entire generation of learners for years to come for our school family. As this year’s theme reveals, it’s a whole new ball game in light of the passage of Issue 16 and Issue 17 last May, which enables the construction of a new grades 5 – 8 Middle School and permits needed renovations at the current elementary buildings. Design phase progress of the new 5-8 campus continued throughout the school year, beginning with stakeholder visioning sessions that included community, staff, and student input. Valuable feedback was obtained and integrated into initial designs. When complete, this project will redefine the educational experience for the community’s middle schoolaged students and create an innovative space that reflects the identity of Avon Lake and its community for a new era of education. The anticipated opening date for the new Avon Lake 5-8 School is scheduled for the 2028-2029 school year.

Acataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens, which sits behind the iris and pupil. It is one of the leading causes of vision impairment worldwide, yet it is also one of the most treatable. Cataracts develop gradually and are most commonly associated with aging, though they can also result from injury, certain medications, or underlying health conditions like diabetes.
Symptoms
Cataracts typically develop slowly, so early changes may go unnoticed. With 23 miles of Lake Erie shoreline and more than 20 marinas, Lorain County is a hub for boating activity. The recently renovated and expanded Avon Library goes far beyond books. There are culinary demonstrations in the Norton Family
Foundation Demonstration Kitchen, maker machines such as a laser engraver, embroidery machine and 3D printer available in the Create Space, book discussion groups, a writer’s group, a Tech Club for tweens and teens and loads of FREE craft, historical, educational and entertainment programs for all ages. We offer passport services, one-onone tech assistance and free meeting room space for local groups of 10 to 100 for free. We have a space just for teens with a soundproof room for webinars and podcasts, an expanded children’s area, a quiet reading room and a business center with public computers, printing, copying and faxing services. We loan fishing poles, night-sky binoculars, birdwatching kits, blood pressure kits and more.
The Avon Lake Public Library (ALPL) was established in 1931 in a house on Avon Belden Road. As the population grew, so did the Library, building at 32649 Electric Blvd in 1958. ALPL offers superb print collections for all ages paired with an expert staff that provides not only reading advice but also top-notch programming, tech help, notary services, and meeting room spaces for the community. The 1994 expansion of the library included a unique science center known as DiscoveryWorks designed with a variety of hands-on learning exhibits that have become local favorites for school field trips and family visits alike. Expanding the City’s History
Tom’s Country Place is honored to have been named a Historic Landmark by the City of Avon, Ohio, Landmarks Preservation Commission! This designation highlights our significance in the city’s rich history. Opened in 1959, the venue was built by Thomas & Mary Hricovec on the family homestead. The Hricovec family has proudly owned and operated Tom’s Country Place for 66 years. Currently 7th-generation Avon residents, the Hricovecs have lived in Avon since the 1850s. Bill Hricovec, third-generation owner of Tom’s Country Place, says, “We’re thrilled to receive this designation. It’s not just our family business; it’s a part of our community’s history and a place where our family, friends, neighbors, and clients have made countless memories together. We are committed to preserving our legacy for future generations.”
