FEB (DTB) Fair @ Chalong Temple Wat Chalong Fair 2017. Wat Chalong (Chalong Temple) Fair is the biggest of all temple fairs on the island and occurs at Chinese New Year every year. People attend for the shopping, games, food and fun. Clothing, bags, jewelery, flowers and plants and ceramics are just some of the things available for sale and there are entertainment areas with darts and shooting games, Ferris wheels, merry-go-rounds and playground areas. Many people pay respect at the temple which is brightly light and decorated for the festival.
19 MARCH Run @ Thanyapura Sports & Leisure Club Supersports 10-Mile International Run 2017. Supersports and Thanyapura are organising the third edition of the Supersports 10-Mile International Run. The race spans over four distances: the signature 10-mile, 5-mile, 2-mile, and 500-metres for children aged 4-12 years. Roland Bleszynski Pride in performance
R
oland Bleszynski is an unusual man: a mould-breaker who has maintained his core principles while establishing a successful career. He may move in the rarefied air of high-end business contracts, but unlike so many CEOs who have forged stellar careers after taking an MBA, Roland came into property development via a different route – civil engineering. He could have chosen to follow a more lucrative career in a big city atmosphere, but decided 16 years ago to work in the natural surroundings of Phuket. He loves life here and has no intention of leaving a climate which has, “365 days of summer and an uninterrupted growing season”. Above all, he hopes to assist Phuket to evolve and mature in the right way, without an overdose of “cheap and (not so) cheerful” apartment blocks. Managing Director of MontAzure, an award-winning resort and residential development at the north end of Kamala Beach, Roland has also long been MD of Abode Developments, a development management consultancy involved in real estate projects for foreign investors and property funds. But the MontAzure project is massive in scope. In combination with Narai Property, ARCH Capital management of Hong Kong and Philean Capital of Singapore, it aims to develop 454 rai of prime beachfront, valley and hillside land. The integrated scheme will include a hotel, Café Del Mar and five beach clubs, including the HQ Beach Lounge – in which we enjoyed lunch. In keeping with Roland’s environmental concerns, none of the properties will exceed 16 metres in height, so the tree line will not be compromised. He intends to retain the existing mature woodland and, since the surrounding hills form a natural watershed, to install a system of rainwater harvesting. Planned in three phases, the first two will be Twinpalms Residences and The Estates at MontAzure. The area extends from the shoreline to deeply wooded hillsides – today wreathed in mist.
He hopes to assist Phuket to evolve and mature in the right way, without an overdose of “cheap and (not so) cheerful” apartment blocks. You could say that Roland’s amazing energy, curiosity and zest for life comes from his parentage – a Chinese-New Zealand mother and a Polish father who emigrated to the UK, served in World War II, and then married and settled in Regina, Canada. If you believe in the genetic precept of hybrid vigour, then Roland exemplifies it. At 45, he’s slim and fit. His doctorate in civil engineering at the University of Toronto, Canada’s leading academic establishment, focused on environmentally sustainable materials and engineering systems, with emphasis on the use of locking away industrial byproducts in construction materials. Such expertise is of particular relevance in his present role. But Roland has a profound interest in so many aspects of living: how things look and work, how we can protect our heritage, how to create beautiful residential spaces as well as how best to use natural and durable materials.

To walk into his ‘HQ’ (as he calls it) is to enter an ambience where everything is on show or to hand for the would-be investor or villa buyer. Nothing is left to chance. There are architectural scale models of all phases of the proposed development along with televisions with touch-screen images and relevant information. Even the living area is designed to simulate how it would look in one of the completed villas. The use of natural and recycled materials is evident everywhere. Roland has imported matt floor tiles from Italy and what resembles wooden facing on the walls is in fact a durable material, called Resysta, made from rice husk ash. As befits a beachside location, Roland has kept all the magnificent casuarinas trees. Only one, he declares proudly, was lost in the process of HQ Beach Lounge.

The husband of a Thai wife, Daojai, and devoted father of two spirited children, Cleo aged four, and Kye, two, Roland is very concerned about the world they will grow up in. The family lives in Kamala and the children attend the local Shining Stars School. He wants his children, above all, to be sociable and creative, to appreciate music and the visual arts, and to develop the language skills so essential in the global village. Himself fluent in French as well as English, and with a working knowledge of Thai, he hopes they will learn Thai and Mandarin Chinese as well as English in their formative years. If they inherit the drive of their father, they will… Despite often inhabiting a world of figures and fine margins, Roland thinks primarily in visual terms; his visiting card is a psychedelic work of art, its golden MontAzure logo has a line across the middle representing the horizon to remind him of its importance. His laptop is packed with images of every conceivable interest – charts and tables about plants and fishes as well as scenery, buildings and people. But what is so remarkable is his capacity to marry these interests to core business practices and to his expertise in marketing, construction techniques and management, sales and negotiation and the thousand and one other daily tasks. Of course, his specialist knowledge as a civil engineer and architect gives him an advantage over bosses who have risen through the ranks via a different career path, but in any case, Roland has the flexibility to adapt to every exigency. As he says, “Success is best measured using one’s own metric”. Add to that, his abiding concern for the preservation and enhancement of Phuket and the world’s natural environment, and you have a special person. MontAzure www.montazure.com

An expansive wine list, and a generous craft beer list, accompany the food. Seating is comfortable and ample at The Barrel and the restaurant features live acoustic music in the evenings as well as great nightly specials on drinks and food.

The opening cocktail party held at Kata Rocks was incredible at sunset with superyachts in the background, a stunning performance by the world fly board champion in the foreground while Thai pop opera superstars Fivera delivered a soaring vocal performance. Undoubtedly, one of the most extravagant superyacht parties of 2016! Day two saw the entire fleet leave Kata Rocks in formation to cruise along Phuket’s west coast to The Surin Phuket, where invited guests indulged in a gourmet beach barbecue. Invitees were absolutely thrilled to cruise on the majestic and largest superyacht attending the rendezvous, the 93m MY Lauren L, experience the modern design of the Pershing 92 or satisfy the need for speed on the swift Zeelander Z44 among others. Later that evening, Kata Rocks’ celebrated the launch of its own small batch hand crafted branded gin, ‘The Spirit of Kata Rocks’ to much acclaim at the KRSR ‘Gins of the World’ cocktail party. During the dinner one of Thailand’s most prominent artists, Mr Watcharin Rodnit of Negarta Asian Art Gallery, created an original work of art that attracted a final silent auction bid of THB 150,000. The proceeds of the auction were donated to the Phuket Youth Sailing Club (PYSC), an organisation that aims to promote and develop sailing for the next generation of sailors on the island.

Tayfun Koksal the new general manager of Royal Langkawi Yacht Club on transforming the brand into a super word for ‘cool’ in the yachঞng fraternity: EDITOR: Since the beautiful renovation has been successfully completed at RLYC, how do you differentiate the disciplines of running three distinctive departments, ie: yacht club and marina, hospitality and hotel and, last but not least, the new retail outlets? TK: The disciplines are not really that much apart from each other; they all aim to give our patrons maximum statisfaction and make them happy. The Yacht club and marina are well established and, with the addition of the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel and Fisherman’s Wharf Langkawi, we have elevated our operations to a new level. Often the different disciplines are overlapping; a yacht owner may stay in our hotel for a few days and also enjoy the new facilities on Fisherman’s Wharf. EDITOR: Is managing the yacht club easier because it has been operating for several years – or more challenging because of the massive expansion? TK: The old yacht club was a much smaller operation. There are much larger challenges now, but if you love your job no challenge is too big and I have a good team with me which is a real advantage in lifting the yacht club to the next higher level. EDITOR: Is running the annual ROYAL LANGKAWI INTERNATIONAL REGATTA a big part of your role?
EDITOR: Do you feel it’s important for the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club to expand beyond a marina with boats? TK: It’s very important! That’s exactly why we’ve had our massive re-development and have now, besides our award-winning marina which now offers 250 berths for yachts of which six are for super yachts up to 80m, also a Yacht Club Hotel as well as Fisherman’s Wharf – which will be a new tourist destination on the island, featuring a variety of shops and new dining options and will also have offices of many of the charter companies in Langkawi. This way RLYC will not only appeal to a relatively small number of sailors and yacht owners, but to all tourists visiting the island. EDITOR: Is the expansion in step with what’s happening in Langkawi now? TK: Yes, indeed it’s in line with the plan to further promote Langkawi for nautical tourism, especially the area where RLYC is located. Right next to us there are several luxury hotels, with more planned, to promote and turn this area into a new small ‘Monaco’ of the East to bring more high spending tourists to the island. EDITOR: Are you making Langkawi your home? TK: I consider Langkawi my home-away-from-home as it’s certainly a beautiful place to live.
TK: The Royal Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR), although only taking place for five days each January for the past 14 years, requires a lot of planning and work for about eight months each year. It has grown into being the premier regatta in the region and certainly plays a big role in promoting sailing; it also promotes Langkawi and RLYC as premier nautical holiday destinations. It has extensive media coverage worldwide and as such is an important event for RLYC. EDITOR: What do you look for in good staff? Is staffing a challenge in Langkawi? TK: Good staff for me must be honest, self-motivated, take responsibility for his/her work and be a good team player. An operation like we have now requires an effective team effort across many tasks. Indeed, getting good qualified staff in Langkawi is an issue as the local population is less than 100,000 and, with more than four million tourist arrivals, almost everybody on the island is somehow involved in the hospitality industry. Our employees motto is ,“We are gentle people serving gentle people”. The people who work for RLYC are our most valued resource; as such, if we serve our people with trust, honesty, respect, integrity and committment we will nurture the right values in each of our staff – which in turn will make them care equally about our guests.

Established 14 years ago, The Mangosteen enjoys an undulating hilltop setting, with an abundance of palms, leafy trees and colourful shrubs. In this tropical garden setting, Hajo has wisely retained existing trees, as well as adding colourful plumerias, bougainvilleas, tabernaemontanas and adeniums. Reaching the restaurant and adjacent swimming pool involves a walk along glazed terracotta brick paths – an impressive design feature – flanked by lush greenery, a pleasant stroll which discreetly links all 42 of the individual villas.

The Mangosteen’s buildings, created by Hajo in consultation with celebrated designer John Underwood, share a stunning and unique structural feature: an octagonal motif which ensures all-round views. The figure is present everywhere: in poolside parasols and thatched salas, in the villas and reception area (itself surrounded by an octagonal fish pond with koi carp), in the centrally sited restaurant, even in the spa. Hajo’s preference for natural materials is evident everywhere: wooden doors, internal floors and beams, earth tones of orange, green and cream, the use of natural brick outdoors, and polished granite in bathrooms. Pause for a moment as you meander, and you can enjoy panoramic views of ultramarine seas, Lone, Bon, Racha and Coral islands and of yachts moored at Chalong Bay. If you want to explore the neighbourhood, nearby attractions include Nai Harn Beach, inexpensive shopping and sunset views at Promthep Cape, as well as Rawai’s beachside restaurants and busy bars. Buddhist landmarks include the gleaming presence of the Mingmonkol statue, 45 metres high and clearly visible from the resort, and the celebrated temple at Chalong. Other local features worth a visit are Kata Viewpoint, the Seashell Museum, bustling Bangla Road in Patong, the Botanical Gardens, Cape Panwa’s aquarium, Muay Thai boxing and the spectacular shows at FantaSea and Siam Niramit, which celebrate the past history and present culture of Thailand. Boat excursions to Racha and Phi Phi islands leave from Chalong Pier. The airport is an hour’s drive away; Phuket Town with its shops, markets and SinoPortuguese architecture is a mere 30 minutes.

The hilltop restaurant at The Mangosteen specialises in both traditional Thai cuisine and international food. A circular outdoor terrace with panoramic views seats 40 guests, while the covered area can accommodate a further 30 diners. The starters, mostly with a Thai provenance, are imaginatively conceived; for example, a selection of grilled, marinated beef dishes, deepfried shrimp with noodles, fishcakes with curry sauce, wrapped shrimps, and prawns with a spicy peanut dip. Thai names, pictures of dishes and ingredients are helpfully included in the menu listings.
with eggplant is inevitably included, as is tom yam, a spicy sour soup flavoured with galangal and lemongrass, and phad thai, a classic confection of noodles, egg and shrimps in a tamarind sauce. Other dishes feature duck breast with black soybeans, sautéed pork, and sliced beef with garlic and chili. For the vegetarian, there is phad pak ruam, a selection of stir-fried mixed vegetables. The restaurant uses only healthy rice-bran oil in its stir-fry dishes, and Spanish olive oil in its western cuisine. No stone is left unturned in the pursuit of a varied, healthy and appetising menu.
The extensive selection of main course dishes – 27 in all – largely features locally sourced ingredients. Andaman specialities include curried blue crab baked in its shell, and white snapper with Thai herbs and pandanus leaves. Tiger prawns come either deep fried or grilled. An exotic touch is provided by snowfish fillets given a Thai inflection by sour green mango salad and cashews. Traditional curries feature prominently: yellow curry comes with sea bass fillets, or chicken and potatoes; pork, beef or chicken red curry is cooked in coconut milk. Authentic green curry

In keeping with the resort’s ‘something for everyone’ image, there are special buffets on Mondays and Thursdays. ‘Five Tastes of Asia’ proposes a gastronomic journey taking diners from Thailand to Vietnam, China, Japan and India. The delectable dishes are tastefully presented, clearly labeled and come with appropriate dipping sauces. Both hot and cold offerings, they include seaweed salad, sushi, spring rolls, tempura prawns, bamboo soup, beef teriyaki, grilled chicken with lemongrass, steamed snapper and pork spare ribs. The vegetarian kadai curry is especially popular. On Mondays, another themed buffet, ‘Thai Food Lovers’ Night’, features intensely flavoured local dishes and delicacies. Both buffets and à-la-carte dishes are competitively priced, as are the alcoholic beverages. There is even a happy hour from 3pm to 6.30pm – two drinks for the price of one.

A central feature of the resort is the large, freeform, saltwater pool. High above the surrounding landscape, and a substantial feat of engineering, it seems to follow you wherever you go. Bridges add a picturesque note. Open all day, every day, whether you fancy a drink at the poolside bar or a dip at midnight, it’ll be there waiting for you. The resort features the first-ever Ayurveda spa in Phuket with a resident Ayurveda-qualified doctor available for free consultations. The word combines ‘ayur’ meaning ‘life’ and ‘veda’ meaning ‘knowledge’. More than 5,000 years old, it’s an Indian holistic science, engaging mind, body and spirit. It treats not just the disease (as western medicine tends to do) but the whole patient. All ingredients used in Mangosteen treatments are authentic and naturally sourced. Facilities are comprehensive: four private treatment areas, including two specialist Ayurveda rooms, two steam saunas and a spacious yet private Jacuzzi. Detox, weight reduction and more specific therapies aimed to alleviate back pain, headaches and other ailments, are available. They range from two-day programmes to a fourweek package, including Yoga and the Dosha balancing Satvik vegan meal, custom prepared at the restaurant. ‘Chakra Balancing’ and ‘Dosha Purifying’ constitute two of the most popular treatments. ‘Doshas’ or energies, govern the creation, maintenance and destruction of bodily tissues. Each of us has a unique combination of these doshas (rather like mediaeval
humours), which determine our basic constitution or ‘prakruti’. Individual treatments can be tailored to meet the particular requirements of guests. In our case, Dr Subhash Shanbhag, who trained in India, spent a long time patiently considering our needs. For me, he recommended a revitalizing treatment, a traditional Indian massage, expertly performed and suited to my dosha type. It employs “warm herbal oils and long rhythmic massage strokes to loosen accumulated toxins in the tissues”, followed by the application of poultices containing herbal powders such as galangal, sandalwood and dry ginger, previously fried with rock salt, coconut and lemon juice. Tied in cloth boluses, and soaked in hot oil, this mixture relieves stiffness in joints and muscles and claims to break down toxins in the digestive system and improves metabolism. The treatment, which finishes with a steam sauna and hot shower, takes a deeply pleasurable 90 minutes. I come away feeling relaxed and refreshed; definitely recommended. Famous for its relaxed ambience, The Mangosteen will look after your every holiday wish and whim. Villas range from family Jacuzzi Suites (two bedrooms) to Superior Garden Villas. To complete the picture, the resort features multilingual friendly staff, a children’s pool, 24-hour and in-room service, valet parking, a fitness room/gym, a safety deposit box, porter, laundry and Wi-Fi facilities. There is even a souvenir/ gift shop. Few stones are left unturned at The Mangosteen, so little wonder that it was awarded five stars in 2005 as a boutique resort or that, time and again, guests return to luxuriate in its charms.

Guinness pie BY IRISH TIMES PUB Ingredients (serves 4) 1 kg boneless beef cut in small squares | 1 large roughly chopped onion | 1 carrot chopped coarsely | 3 potatoes, each cut into 6 pieces | 2 garlic cloves | 2 tbsp of tomato paste | 1 cup of beer broth | 1 cup of Guinness | 1 tbsp of Worcestershire sauce | 3 thyme sprigs | flour for dusting | salt and pepper Method Pat beef dry and season with salt and pepper. Dust with flour and fry in a heavy ovenproof pot in batches. Transfer beef to a bowl and fry onion and garlic till softened. Add tomato paste and cook an additional 2 minutes. Add broth, Guinness, potatoes, carrots and thyme. Bring to gentle boil. Cover and transfer to 175°C preheated oven, until beef is tender (about 90 minutes). Cool and remove the thyme. Once cooled, transfer into bowls and top with puff pastry (store-bought is fine). Brush the pastry with egg wash and bake for 20 minutes.
About the chef Paul Orr Chef Paul Orr was born in Malta and raised in Canada. He graduated from the acclaimed Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and Arts and got his start at Aldo’s Cucina, an Italian California hotspot, followed by Savoir Fare, a chic French restaurant where he worked his way up to Executive Chef. He followed this with a stint at Sparkling Hill Resort and Spa outside Vancouver, working under a three-star Michelin-trained chef. After a couple of consulting opportunities, he was craving something entirely new, so he moved to Thailand. He started in Hua Hin, firstly at Springfield Royal Country Club followed by Anantasila, a beachside resort. He jumped at the opportunity to move to Phuket and spent the next two years at La Bodega in Jungceylon. Chef Paul is currently at Irish Times Pub, also in Jungceylon. Risotto alla fragole, Prosecco e prosciutto BY PLUM PRIME STEAKHOUSE This is a recipe to make a risotto the traditional way, slow cooking and without stirring. The choice of ingredients is balanced between the fruity flavor of the strawberries, the fresh acidity of Prosecco wine and Prosciutto di Parma.

Ingredients (serves four) 400g Carnaroli rice | 200g unsalted butter | 120ml Prosecco sparkling wine | 60g chopped white onion | 100g diced strawberries | 150g Parmigiano reggiano cheese | 4 large slices of Prosciutto di Parma | 1.2 litres vegetable stock | aged balsamic vinegar Preparation Dry the ham in an oven at 65ºC until crispy. Warm half of the butter in a pot and add half of the strawberries and all the onion. Stir slowly until the onion becomes translucent. Pour in the rice, heating it well. Pour in the wine and stir with wooden spatula, let it evaporate completely. Add boiling vegetable stock, lower the heat to a slow simmer and let it cook without stirring anymore for circa 13 minutes. Check if more stock is needed. Turn off the heat; add the rest of strawberries, the rest of the butter in small pieces and the grated Parmigiano cheese. Blend ingredients with a wooden spatula, then cover the pot and leave for five minutes. Distribute the risotto in four plates, decorate with a slice of ham and serve accompanied by balsamic vinegar.

Seeking solitude in Koh Phrathong Koh Phrathong is a rare treat; it’s one of those ‘off the beaten track’ islands that we are sometimes led to believe no longer exist in Thailand. The island is nearly deserted and barely receives a Wi-Fi signal. It’s oddly quiet and amazingly calm. With its stunning scenery and rugged patches of landscape, Koh Phrathong conjures up images of wild adventures and uncharted territory. The coast of Koh Phrathong is hugged by tall, willowy casuarina trees and coconut palms. In various parts of the island, some trees have been uprooted or fallen, their giant trunks and immense gnarled roots adding character to the already unique terrain.

An abundance of marine life and a unique landscape are a few of the great features of Koh Phrathong
Koh Phrathong’s beaches feature expansive stretches of soft sand and, as it’s a rather large island, it’s easy to wander the beaches without seeing another soul for hours. The northern tip of the island plays host to a few small bungalow operations and the horizon here appears to stretch on forever.
Nature is abundant here. There’s a healthy population of large hermit crabs as well as many hornbills high in the trees that begin singing just before the sunset paints the sky fiery hues of orange and red. Koh Phrathong’s interior has yet to be developed and is an amazing contrast to the island’s tropical coastline. The central part of the island is covered in white sandy dunes and tall grass. The trees are tall and barren, many with their bark peeling off. With the exception of a small dirt path,

the interior of the island does not have a road. In fact, the interior of Koh Phrathong closely resembles the African savannah and adds to the distinctive charm of the island. This is the perfect escape from it all, and it’s well worth spending a few days there wandering the beaches, dipping your toes in the sea and generally relaxing.

Snorkeling the Surin Islands A popular excursion from Koh Phrathong is a one-day trip to the Surin Islands. Located within Mu Ko Surin National Park, the Surin Islands are pristine and a must-visit for any beach enthusiast or nature lover. A day trip focuses on a visit inside the national park grounds to Mai Ngam Beach and Ko Surin Tai as well as snorkeling in Sapparod Bay and Bon Bay and also exploring the underwater world at Pak Kard Bay and Pae Rock. These destinations are absolutely breathtaking and both are surrounded by verdant growth while the beaches are covered in powdery soft sand and the water sparkles with amazing shades of turquoise. The flora and fauna of the Surin Islands is lush and tropica, and you’ll find slow lorises, water monitor lizards and huge sea turtles.

A trip to the Surin Islands is not complete without a visit to the Moken Sea Gypsy village. A visit to their village of thatchroofed houses on stilts is an interesting and educational experience and a small learning centre has been set up at the back of the village explaining their previous nomadic way of life. Written in English, the explanations are useful to visitors. It’s quite enjoyable to walk around the village and mingle with the locals who have many smiles to exchange and if you’re lucky, a few interesting stories to share.

Getting there To Kuraburi Kuraburi is approximately 190km from Phuket; a scenic three-hour drive. Take Route 4 just after Sarasin Bridge and follow the signs north to Kuraburi. Daily buses depart from Phuket to Kuraburi from 7am until 6pm. Tickets are under 200 baht and the journey takes up to four hours. To Koh Phrathong and the Surin Islands Kuraburi Pier is located approximately 7km north of Kuraburi Town. Although boat rentals from here are quite easy to negotiate, it’s best to book a ticket beforehand. Greenview Tour has an office at the pier where it’s possible to book tickets to both Koh Phrathong and the Surin Islands.
How to go There are only a few tour operators who visit the Surin Islands, but Greenview Tour comes highly recommended. Based out of Kuraburi, this tour operator offers an extremely personalised tour with knowledgeable guides who speak a variety of languages. In addition, the guides are also environmentally conscious and do their very best at educating guests on the importance of keeping both the water and the national park clean.

The boat ride to Koh Phrathong takes approximately one hour and, if you wish, you can make a few stops along the way. On leaving the mainland, the boat passes through a seven-metre deep canal that plays host to a mangrove forest and an abundance of natural wildlife including starfish, numerous varieties of crabs, tropical birds and sand worms just to name a few. Greenview Tour also facilitates pick-up times in Phuket to Kuraburi Pier. This option leaves Phuk et as early as 5.30am, but it’s worth it for an exceptional day trip.

I’m
a hopeless romantic and like to stay in a hotel that some folks consider passé because it hasn’t changed since Queen Victoria bunked in the place. It’s often difficult, in Thailand, to fill my need for the quaint and romantic, but Hua Hin is close to perfect. Originally a sleepy fishing village, Hua Hin awakened from its slumber in the 1920s with the addition of a railway from Bangkok. Although no longer ‘sleepy’, Hua Hin attracts me when I feel a need to escape the fast and furious pace of Bangkok and indulge in a bit of relaxation by the seaside. Railway to Hua Hin on the Bangkok – Singapore line
The journey Since I’m into history, charming little train stations and stuff like that, I take the railway to Hua Hin on the Bangkok – Singapore line. Built in 1911, Hua Hin’s wooden train station has been beautifully preserved and has a fascinating adjacent station reserved solely for the Royal Family. The trains don’t quite match the station for quaintness, but the journey is exciting. The arrival in Hua Hin will transport any selfrespecting romantic into another world. All trains going south stop at Hua Hin, but the most convenient and comfortable is the all second-class Special Express Diesel Railcar leaving Bangkok’s Hua Lampong Station at 8.05am and arriving in Hua Hin
The trains don’t quite match the station for quaintness, but the journey is exciting. at 11.26am. When you leave the station, be sure to take a bicycle samlor to your hotel. It’s the way they did it in the 1920s. Flights, buses and taxi will also get you from Bangkok to your Hua Hin hotel in just a few hours.
Eating out Once an active fishing port, Hua Hin still has enough fisherfolk around to ensure a steady supply of fresh seafood for its restaurants. Most of the seafood eateries are found along the beach on Naresdamri Road, but the best places are away from the centre of town. There are also loads of places serving western, Indian and Japanese food, including Italian places with pizza and pasta. In the evening, the adventurous head for the food stalls at the Night Market on Dechanuchit Road where, in addition to traditional Thai specialities, several vendors serve fresh seafood.

You’ll get a good night’s sleep in Hua Hin. At most places the lights go out and shutters close by 10pm.

Lazy days & fun stuff Plearn Wan invokes a time warp to what life was like in the 1950s. It’s literally a living museum composed of a unique two-storey courtyard-style architecture
There’s a lot to do in Hua Hin, with most recreation centred on the waterfront and the beach. In addition to swimming and lazing in the sun, activities like horseback riding, jet skiing, windsurfing and parasailing are also available. Away from the beach visitors go for elephant rides, watch Thai boxing, learn to cook Thai cuisine and play golf at one of the area’s eight golf courses. Spas: Pampering oneself at a spa is a must for all visitors. I don’t know whether they did this in Hua Hin’s good old days, but if they didn’t, they should have. In addition to numerous smaller (and less expensive) day spas, all the major hotels have substantial spas offering everything from exotic treatments to traditional Thai massages, as well as wraps, scrubs and beauty services. Sightseeing: There are numerous sightseeing opportunities in and around Hua Hin. These include several wats, temples and palaces. Marukathaiwan Palace, built by King Rama VI in 1923, is a personal favourite. Built of teak, 'the palace of love and hope' was a rainy season retreat and is located a short distance from Hua Hin.

Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park The outstanding feature of Phraya Nakhon Cave is the ‘throne’, a historic site built during King Rama V’s (King Chulalongkorn) reign. The best time to see the throne is between 10.30 - 11.30am as that’s when the sun shines on it.

Shopping: Hua Hin is a wonderful place to shop for virtually all of Thailand’s traditional handicrafts. In addition, the town is a centre for contemporary art with several small galleries in town featuring works by local artists. Although less exciting, visits to Hua Hin’s reasonably priced tailors, dentists and optometrists are commonplace with visitors from abroad.
Day trips: From Hua Hin, day trips offered to Sam Roi Yot National Park and River Kwai, snorkelling at Koh Talu, fruit plantation tours, caves and waterfalls and river boat cruises.
There is a wealth of shopping and lifestyle destinations in this resort town to comb where visitors can browse for treats. Two places of note are Plearn Wan Shopping Village and The Venezia. Plearn Wan invokes a time warp to what life was like in the 1950’s. It is literally a living museum composed of a unique two-storey courtyard-style architecture filled with wooden shophouses that sell vintage merchandise, clothing and toys of the era and homemade food fare along with a beauty salon, photo studio, outdoor cinema screen and a guesthouse. Another addition to themed shopping and attraction destinations in Hua Hin is The Venezia. Both charming and fun, the village boasts a canal styled upon the waterways of Venice that were traditionally used for transportation, but are more widely known as a means to enjoy the photogenic sights. The Venezia holds several attractions and entertainment venues along with shops and eateries.
Hua Hin Train Station The historic Hua Hin Train Station, which arrived when the railway connecting Bangkok to Singapore was constructed in the early 1920s, was the catalyst for opening up the seaside town to royalty and people seeking a weekend escape from Bangkok. Today the red and white structures of the station are a popular tourist attraction, particularly the iconic pavilion that was once the waiting room of royalty. Visitors can enjoy a scenic and nostalgic ride between Thailand's capital and Hua Hin that takes approximately four hours.

Property tips Excited developers / agents – waiting for you At this time of year, property developers and real estate agents are at their most excited and, in some cases, with their finely tuned fever pitch smoothness and schmooze strategies in play, ready for the much dreamt about tourist-turned property investor to arrive by air, sea and (less common) by road.
Phuket’s choice The good news for any investors out there is that Phuket really does have some good property development offerings available. During what has, in the last three years, been a relatively quiet period in terms of volume of property investment, many developers have not packed up and retreated to condominium over-supplied Bangkok or to further shores. Instead, Phuket now has: new sea view condominium projects; new globally branded beach clubs – this time we believe, correctly set back and positioned in relation to the beaches; new attractions for children including Kids Clubs at marinas; a great existing retail area which is under considerable development and investment, about to be expanded to more than four times its existing size. I could go on, but you might think I’m being sponsored.
Field of gravity pulling you in Whilst looking at all the wonders of Phuket, you may find yourself gravitating to a situation where you are presented with nicely prepared 3D images and brochures and drone aerial shots of beautiful land sites – all ready for the first concrete and steel rod pilings to be driven into the ground with a shudder, as soon as enough would-be buyers have placed their deposits.

If that happens, then please consider, very carefully, why you are thinking about investing in property in Phuket, and how you can do this safely. Take your time and – as I inevitably must say – seek decent legal, but also practical, advice before you make a commitment.
Baby steps If you think you can learn everything about a project or property from being in the sales office, then I guess you may also buy a car by inspecting the specifications provided to you at the showroom by that attractive show room salesperson. If you don’t think this way, then some of the matters that you should check are as follows: 1. How much cash does the developer have to finish the project, without you? 2. Is there a large bank loan taken out on the project land, which could be OK, provided the developer can actually service the loan. 3. Is the project land legal? This isn’t a question of whether there is a land title document in existence – of course, there will be one of those, it’s a question of inspecting the entire history of the land; sometimes more than 60 years worth of old land title documents need to be checked at the land department. 4. Is the developer being sued for anything in the courts? 5. Is the timing of the construction phase of the development completely reliant upon sales – and therefore a moving feast? 6. What is the type of legal ownership being offered and is the developer / sales team / agent able to eloquently describe this to you without struggling. If they oversimplify, then you won’t get the true picture. If they get caught up in technical language, then you definitely need help and advice, as they probably do too... 7. Is the access way, from the public road to the front door of your prospective property, free and clear of impediments, and legally registered?

8. What is the asset management plan for any ‘common area’ in the project: landscaping, lighting, refuse collection, road resurfacing, amenities upkeep – gyms; saunas, spas, yoga rooms, restaurant facilities – they all require maintenance. Someone has to pay – that will be you. Have the projected fees been projected on a decent set of financial assumptions and is there a professional management company or a team assigned, or ready to be assigned, post-completion?

9. The big crunch for many investors – the rental programme. A rental programme, like a real estate agent, can take on many disguises. It can be your friend, your dinner partner, and then your enemy who doesn’t pick up the phone anymore. If you are buying for the comfort of knowing that you are to be ‘guaranteed’ a yield, then you need to take advice on the guarantee, the format of the programme, how the gross operating expenses are calculated, how your share is calculated after the guarantee expires, who is backing the guarantee in the event the project isn’t as successful as hoped. Really, a rental programme is sometimes worth looking into almost as much as the property itself. So, whilst I prepare to leave my Phuket property home, which I bought eight years ago and which has doubled in value, to drive to my office in a marina where I may, if I ever had the free time, set sail around the sunny pristine vistas of Phuket and the surrounding islands, please take your time to choose your dream second/third/fourth home, or the next property purchsase which ought to beat the yield of any investment fund manager.

The first Laguna Phuket Marathon was held in 2005 in response to the 2004 tsunami to celebrate and support the island’s fast recovery. The event was a showcase of the resilience of local businesses and communities and to this day continues to support the island’s businesses during a period of the year when the island is typically quiet. The event has never been about breaking records – rather, participants return to the annual event to support the local community and enjoy one of the most popular lifestyle sporting events in Asia. In addition to the marathon, participants can sign up for a half marathon, a 10.5km run, a 5km run and a 2km kids’ run. There will also be parties, trophy presentations and an expo where local businesses and sponsors showcase their products and services. Runners follow the course from Laguna and head north through local villages, pineapple and rubber plantations. It is a fun and family oriented affair in conjunction with the Laguna Phuket Foundation, which supports educational and social development of local communities, marine and natural environmental conservation. The most popular of all the temples in Phuket is Wat Chalong, built during the reign of King Rama II (1809-1842) and since subject to much extension. The temple contains several structures and halls, one of which features a gilt-covered statue of the famous and revered Luang Poh Cham, plus statues of Luang Poh Chuang and Luang Poh Gleum, all ex-abbots of the temple. The Grand Pagoda is decorated with wall paintings of scenes from the Buddha’s life and features various Buddha images.
Bangla Road (Patong) Many people come to Phuket just to revel in the razzmatazz of Patong’s hotspots, but even if your tastes are generally more moderate, you should not miss this international icon of the hedonistic lifestyle. A short street in the heart of down-town Patong, Bangla Road packs more than a hundred bars, restaurants and discotheques into a single traffic-free, brightly-lit celebration of glitz, which operates from dusk until dawn. Walking up and down and dropping into one or two of the throbbing cacophonous homages to Mammon will leave you with vivid and enduring memories of the ‘other’ Phuket. 75 C2

Snorkelling Crystal clear waters, beautiful coral reefs and a prolific marine life; it’s an underwater paradise. The best time is between November and April, when there’s very little rain and the sea is clear and calm. Most of the west coast beaches, especially the smaller ones, offer good snorkelling – as do the islands off the southeast coast of Phuket

This is a public park located by the sea at the end of Phuket Road. There’s an old dredger-shaped monument called (somewhat unimaginatively) the ‘60 Year Mine Monument’, which was built on the headland at the southern end of Phuket Road in 1969. This monument commemorates one Captain Edward Thomas Miles, an Australian who brought the first metal ore-dredger to Phuket in 1909, hence the ‘60 year’ bit. In former times, Sapan Hin was regarded as the gateway of Phuket because the promontory was the chief trading port for freighters. As time went by, more land was reclaimed and developed into parks and public facilities, which now include a sports centre, large playing fields, restaurants and the island’s main boxing stadium. It’s also the site of two colleges – Phuket Community College and Phuket Vocational College.

Every day many Phuket residents visit Sapan Hin to jog or just to enjoy walking along the mangrove-lined paths. In the evenings people turn out to play tennis, basketball, volleyball, soccer, lawn bowling and takraw. Others come to picnic and enjoy snacks and drinks available from the small market. At the south end of Sapan Hin is the Kiew Tian Shrine, which plays a significant role in the annual Phuket Vegetarian Festival; all the street processions end here. To get to Saphin Hin just hop in a Tuk- Tuk or taxi; they all know it.

Weekend market The most popular week-end market, about 1km south of Central Festival, is officially called ‘Chao Fa Variety’ but is universally referred to by its Thai name ‘Talad Tai Rot’. There you’ll find a bewildering choice – everything from clothes to electronics. If you’re after handicraft items like tooled leather goods, Buddha images or second-hand books, you’ll not be disappointed. And if you’re hungry, there’s a huge selection of Thai snacks – all freshly prepared on the spot. The market opens at 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays − when it’s cooler. It’s a good idea to arrive early to avoid the crowds and traffic. Car parking can be a challenge... 80 G6
Old Phuket Town A hundred years ago, Phuket was a prosperous tin mining town and was an international centre with a large community of Chinese and Europeans. They built beautiful homes in the style called SinoPortuguese – terraced townhouses with narrow frontages and accommodations stretching back from the road. The beautifully furnished interiors often included walled gardens and Chinese inspired decorations. Explore Rommanee, Talang, Yaowarat and Dibuk Roads, where the buildings have been lovingly restored to their former glory and now feature antique shops, speciality restaurants and more. 81 C5S

Iraq invades Kuwait
2nd August 1990… eight days later
It was longtime friend and fellow hasher, Johnny Johnson, who – putting his head round my apartment door that August morning – uttered the immortal words, “I’ve got a map. We leave in an hour.” Bloody hell did he have a map, but we left anyway. The family who were reputedly more knowledgeable in the ways of the desert than we (as it turned out their experience was based on family picnics in the desert), we parked up while our ‘picnic family’ squeezed as much of their ‘stuff ’ into their four-wheel drive vehicle as possible. We must have sat there for nearly two hours, finally getting on our way at noon, the sun scorching down from directly overhead. Outside temperatures were by this time more than 50 degrees centigrade. Our small group of four or five vehicles got under way heading for the family’s favourite picnic spot. Once we were a few miles into the deserted desert proper, it was apparent that we had no idea where we were going; we needed help. Parked up on some hard sand below and to our right was a typical, picture-perfect desert Bedouin tent with a few desultory camels wandering about outside. Maybe we should go and ask the way. Nobody else seemed to want to be the one to make the approach, so I stepped out into the searing heat and walked the 150 or so metres to the tent. As I approached, I could see the whole family in the low tent were seated around their mid-day meal with baskets of dried dates, fish and rice laid out in front of them. Shit, I thought, I’m going to have to sit down and join them, and experience the true desert hospitality. It would be considered insulting to refuse if they offered hospitality but I really didn’t have time to stop for a MacDonald’s As I got close, it was indicated I remain standing in the sun outside the shade of the tent, I then saw the dark angry look on the father’s face; I was clearly not welcome, which was a relief. As he looked up at me from a few yards away, he implied by the unasked question, “What the bloody hell do you want, and where do you think you’re going?” I did the respectful “Salam Ali Cum” bit and then asked, in my very best (crap), Arabic: “which way to Saudi?” He waved a piece of fish in such a way that it indicated nothing. Clearly he had no interest in being helpful and simply wanted me to go away. I tried again. “Is this the way to Saudi?” He probably thought it was too bloody stupid a question to answer. Anywhere

Fortunately at this point one of his many children, a young lad of no more than nine or ten, jumped up. “Follow me,” he announced and set off striding back towards our small group of waiting cars. Jumping up onto the running board, he pointed in the direction we needed to travel and we were off. We probably drove for about three miles, far enough for me to begin to worry as to how the boy would be getting back to his family. Each time I tried to inquire he would merely reply “marlish”, which pretty much meant “never mind”. Finally I decided that his walk back was far enough and made him get off. After profuse and profound “Shukhrans”, he was off striding back, dish-dash fluttering in the light breeze that had sprung up, to return to his interrupted lunch in the 50-plus degree heat. At one stage we spotted Iraqi soldiers on the western horizon, sitting out the heat of the mid-day sun. None of them moved to intercept us – I guess they had lost interest in soldiering until later in the day. As we drew closer to the border we could make out through the haze a black line stretching across the horizon. Gradually, as it came into focus, we could see that it was a huge sand bund, maybe as much as 10 metres high, that had been pushed up over a great many years to define the Kuwaiti-Saudi border. A few days later we learnt that a Range Rover with four Brit occupants had tried to drive over it and got stuck. All four people had died. The Saudi Border Police Station was like something out of a Beau Geste movie. In my memory it was a two-storey building and looked like it was made of mud and wattle. When we finally reached the front of the queue, an official took our passports to check, but failed to return them. “Aliens over there,” he said, indicating where we should park.
