ealth officials on alert for monkeypox are to elevate screening measures at Phuket International Airport as part of the new protection measures announced by Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who also serves as the Public Health Minister. The move follows the World Health Organisation (WHO) declaring

monkeypox “A Public Health Emergency of International Concern” last Saturday (July 23) and issuing a list of “Temporary Recommendations” for member countries. The WHO urged member countries to ready health systems and personnel to prevent widespread infections and also urged them to find effective methods that do not stigmatise target groups. In response, Thailand is considering raising further its health alert for
monkeypox by listing it as a “serious communicable disease”, Anutin told the press last Sunday night (July 24) after chairing an urgent meeting with health authorities. Disease control and immigration checkpoints throughout the country as a precaution have been ordered to ramp up screening for monkeypox, particularly among visitors coming from countries with a high risk of the disease, he said. Dr Kusak Kukiattikoon, Chief of the Phuket Provincial Public Health Office (PPHO), on Monday announced the general measures to be rolled out in the hope of preventing the spread of monkeypox on the island. “There has been an order for disease control checkpoints across the country to coordinate with the Immigration Police to be extra vigilant of people traveling from high-risk countries,” he said.
