Employers and graduate and professional schools often stress the benefits and importance of the skill set honed from a liberal arts education. In fact, the highest placement rates to medical and law schools, graduate programs and employment are consistently found at top liberal arts institutions like Illinois Wesleyan.

Undergraduate Advantage As an exclusively undergraduate institution, Illinois Wesleyan provides the opportunity for students to be taught by professors, not graduate students. With small classes that average 17 students, faculty get to know our students by name and can give them the individual attention they need.

Our undergraduate focus also means that Wesleyan students are not competing with graduate students for faculty research opportunities or performance opportunities in the fine arts, which is often the case at other universities.

Another important reason to consider Illinois Wesleyan is its flexible curriculum, where you’ll be encouraged to pursue multiple interests and talents. Students can choose from 42 majors in the liberal arts, business, fine arts and nursing, plus 8 pre-professional programs that include medicine, law, dentistry, engineering, veterinary science, forestry and environmental management, physical therapy and occupational therapy for those who want to pursue graduate or professional school in one of these areas.

Major Options If you’re undecided about what major to pursue or torn between more than one field of study, Illinois Wesleyan gives you options. At some schools students feel a great deal of pressure to select a major right away, but at Wesleyan we seek students who want to be openminded about new fields of study. Each year nearly 25 percent of our entering students don’t declare a major initially. Being “undeclared” isn’t the same as being lost, it just means students haven’t yet found their academic passion, or perhaps they are torn between multiple interests. Most majors at Wesleyan do not need to be declared until the end of the sophomore year, therefore students have time to decide.

Individual Attention At Wesleyan the student-faculty ratio is 11 to 1, and out of 475 courses only 9 have more than 40 students. As a result, you’ll get to know your professors and they’ll get to know you. Our small size and the personal attention students receive are often major reasons why so many top students choose Illinois Wesleyan.

Study Abroad

Another distinctive feature of Illinois Wesleyan is its 4-4-1 academic year — two four-month (15-week) semesters and one optional May Term session.

Illinois Wesleyan has ranked among the top 40 baccalaureate schools in the United States for both total number of students studying abroad and overall percentage of study abroad participation. Illinois Wesleyan has its own faculty-led programs in London and Spain. Wesleyan also offers 300 program opportunities in 70 countries across the globe provided by partner organizations and universities.

May Term In May Term, students are immersed in a single subject, and courses often offer curricular experimentation, nontraditional or interdisciplinary approaches, or close student-faculty collaboration.

For May Term, students can elect to take a class on campus, participate in an internship, collaborate with faculty on a research project or take a travel study class to the far reaches of the globe.

Business Liberal Arts Advantage A recent report from the Association of American Colleges and Universities recommended that undergraduate business programs incorporate more liberal arts course work into their curriculum, which is precisely what the business program at Illinois Wesleyan has been doing since its inception.

Program Breadth While most liberal arts colleges offer limited business programs, Illinois Wesleyan offers a range of majors and programs that compete with those at much larger schools. The Wesleyan business program includes majors in accounting, business administration, economics, international business and the only risk management major in the nation offered by a liberal arts college. Students can also pursue concentrations in management, marketing, human resources, finance and other areas.

Internship Opportunities Great internships are available locally, nationally and internationally with companies such as State Farm, PriceCoopersWaterhouse, Citibank, Caterpillar, McGrawHill, Mizuno of Japan and Lloyd’s of London, in cities like Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, New York and Washington.

Distinctions For two straight years, Illinois Wesleyan accounting students have had the highest first-time pass rate in the state for the Certified Public Accounting Exam and one of the highest pass rates in the entire country.

Each year more corporate recruiters visit Illinois Wesleyan’s Hart Career Center than any other liberal arts institution in Illinois.

Graduate Success Recent business graduates have gone on to careers with Ernst & Young, G.E., Goldman Sachs, Hewitt Associates, KimberlyClark, Kraft Foods, Merrill Lynch, NCR Corporation and Proctor & Gamble, to name but a few. Others have gone on to top graduate and professional schools such as Northwestern, University of Chicago, Columbia and Notre Dame.

Sciences Academic Flexibility While students may choose from majors in biology, chemistry, environmental studies, physics and psychology, as well as in computer science and mathematics, they can also pursue specific interests in biochemistry, genetics, cognitive science, engineering and numerous other areas through research and internship opportunities. Some students will also take advantage of the opportunity to pursue a second major, which may or may not be science related.

Research Opportunities One big advantage for Illinois Wesleyan science majors is the opportunity to collaborate with faculty or conduct independent research, sometimes graduate-level research. With our superb research facilities, accessible faculty and the absence of competition from graduate students, research opportunities abound.

Working with faculty on National Science Foundation or National Institute for Health grants or presenting original research at the annual John Wesley Powell Research Conference on campus adds to our strong academic program and can certainly garner the attention of postgraduate programs.

Post-Graduate Success

Each year Illinois Wesleyan students interested in pursuing medicine are accepted into medical school at a rate near or above 90 percent, while the national average hovers around 50 percent.

Wesleyan has similar placement rates for students interested in veterinary science, physical therapy, dentistry and optometry. Typically, Illinois Wesleyan students seeking a master’s or Ph.D. degree receive multiple offers from the nation’s top graduate and research programs.

Nursing Students interested in nursing apply directly into our four-year BSN program as first year students and begin clinicals their sophomore year.

IWU also offers a Spanish language minor, giving students the ability to address the health-care needs of the country’s growing Hispanic/Latino population. The six-course minor includes work in language, literature and culture, along with a medical Spanish course or an internship where linguistic and cultural skills are put to use in a professional context.

Broadway and Beyond

As an institution grounded in the liberal arts, humanities and social sciences are a real strength and popular course of study at Illinois Wesleyan. While many students pursue a major in more common subjects such as English, history, and political science, others pursue in-depth study in American studies, anthropology, Greek and Roman studies and international studies. Small, writing-intensive courses provide a great opportunity to learn from a variety of faculty who are recognized nationally as experts in their field.

Students who complete a major in the humanities or social sciences will choose from a variety of postgraduate options. Some may pursue an advanced degree at the nation’s top post-graduate programs, including law and medical schools. Others will accept job offers in diverse fields, not always directly related to their majors: English majors go into marketing, history majors pursue finance, or philosophy majors enter the world of computer consulting. Whether the major is directly related or not, IWU humanities and social sciences majors become leaders in business, education, law, political science, social policy, international relations and a host of other career fields.

Traditional liberal arts colleges do not typically offer professional programs in art, music and theatre.

While some have conservatories of music that operate independently from the rest of the college and others offer Bachelor of Arts degrees with majors in one of the fine arts, at Illinois Wesleyan students can earn degrees from the professional Schools of Art, Music or Theatre, and also choose to pursue a second major or minor from the College of Liberal Arts.

With Illinois Wesleyan, students have the opportunity for extensive off-campus experiences. The School of Theatre Arts often takes trips to Broadway or the theatre district of London. In recent years, the School of Music’s Collegiate Choir has toured and performed in Italy, and the Jazz Band has played in Japan and Great Britain.

Furthermore, internships are available for fine arts students in cities such as Chicago and New York.

Mix and Match The open structure of the College of Liberal Arts allows for students to easily explore a variety of subject areas or combine different areas of interest for a double-major or multiple minors. This includes combining a traditional humanities or social sciences major with something in an unrelated field such as business, natural science or the fine arts. It is not uncommon to find students studying English and business, history and art, or political science and biology.

Fine Arts

Undergraduate Only Many students aren’t initially aware that at larger fine arts programs they may have to compete with graduate students. Since Illinois Wesleyan is strictly an undergraduate institution, our fine arts students often have more performance opportunities, faculty attention and resources.

Fine Arts Scholarships Through the generous donations of Illinois Wesleyan alumni, fine arts scholarships are available in music and theatre based on an audition, and in art and theatre design/technology based on a portfolio review. Wesleyan also offers the Jennings Scholarship for non-music majors, which provides both scholarship money and free lessons within the professional School of Music.

Campus life at Illinois Wesleyan is welcoming, vibrant and fun. You’ll find students from across the nation and around the world, and there exists a wide-ranging and active campus life that will provide opportunities to learn, grow and have fun every day.

Living Options There are 12 campus residence halls with four designated for first-year students — Dolan, Ferguson, Gulick and Munsell. Each hall is co-ed and accommodates between 125 and 200 students in double occupancy rooms, with a limited number of single occupancy rooms available. There are both formal and informal lounges, computer rooms, recreation rooms and other amenities in each residence hall. All rooms are air conditioned and include cable television hook-up, Internet connection and telephone access.

Recreation Staying active is one thing that brings many students together on campus, whether it’s a game of pick-up basketball, a fitness class or athletic event. Illinois Wesleyan has 165 student organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, the Action Research Center, College Democrats and Republicans, 10 fraternities and sororities, student government, campus media, 20 intramural and club sports and more.

Titan Athletics Both on and off the athletic field, the Illinois Wesleyan Titans have a long winning tradition. More than 400 Wesleyan students take part in intercollegiate athletics, competing on 18 varsity teams — nine men’s and nine women’s.

While the Titans have won five NCAA Division III national championships and captured 118 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin conference championships, we’re most proud of the fact that we have had 112 student-athletes named Academic All-Americans, ranking Wesleyan 11th in the nation for such honors, alongside such elite institutions as Notre Dame, Stanford and MIT.

Value and Affordability Kiplinger’s has again listed Illinois Wesleyan among the top 35 “Best Values” of liberal arts colleges. With more than $29 million in need-based aid and merit scholarships, plus Federal and state aid programs, pursuing an Illinois Wesleyan education is possible for families from a broad range of circumstances.

Academic and Talent Scholarships • Merit-based scholarships are based primarily on the overall academic profile of the student. They generally range in value from $2,500 to $17,000 and are four-year renewable awards.

• Talent-based scholarships are based on audition or portfolio review results in music, theatre or art. They generally range in value from $2,500 to $12,000 and are four-year renewable awards.

• The Jennings Scholarships for non-music majors are awarded based on audition results. They are $1,000 renewable annual awards that also include private weekly lessons.

• International student scholarships generally range from $2,500 to $17,000 and are four-year renewable awards.

Need-Based Assistance Need-based grant support from Illinois Wesleyan is awarded on the basis of financial need, after the amount of state and federal grant support is applied. Therefore, in order to qualify for institutional assistance, students need to complete the following application forms each year on or before the March 1 preferential filing date.
