Cedarhurst Center for the Arts

2600 E Richview Rd, Mt. Vernon Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mt. Vernon has an impressive mix of visual art exhibitions, sculpture gardens, educational programs, and notable community events. The center offers visitors an immersive experience with its assorted fine art collection, including the renowned Mitchell Museum.

Surrounded by 90 acres of scenic landscapes, Cedarhurst is a place where art and nature come together.

Tarble Arts Center

2010 9th St, Charleston The Tarble Arts Center at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston offers a dynamic range of exhibitions, educational programs, and unique events that engage both the university and the wider community. With a focus on visual arts, the center provides a space where creativity and learning intersect, making it a key cultural destination in the region.

Richard W. Bock Sculpture Museum 315 E College Ave, Greenville

The Richard W. Bock Sculpture Museum at Greenville University celebrates the artistry of the acclaimed sculptor Richard W. Bock. Known for his exceptional talent, Bock attracted the attention of Frank Lloyd Wright, who commissioned several sculptures from him. The museum boasts a comprehensive collection of Bock’s sculptures, architectural models, and personal artifacts, providing visitors with an insightful look into the impact and creativity of this influential artist.

Gaslight Art Colony

516 Archer Ave, Marshall The Gaslight Art Colony in Marshall is dedicated to promoting all forms of visual art. Offering a range of expositions, workshops, and events, the Gaslight Art Colony provides artists with opportunities to engage with and appreciate local creativity. Explore your creative side—Gaslight Art Colony provides classes tailored for both children and adults.

Misselhorn Art Gallery 611 W 2nd St, Sparta

The Misselhorn Art Gallery in Sparta showcases over 2,000 works by renowned Southern Illinois artist Roscoe Misselhorn, often dubbed the “Norman Rockwell of the Midwest.” The gallery, located in a historic train depot, also features contemporary exhibits and memorabilia from the Oscar-winning film “In the Heat of the Night,” which was filmed there.

The collection includes sketches of steam locomotives, historical buildings, and local landmarks.

Green Root Gallery

125 E Main St, Belleville Tucked into Belleville’s charming downtown, Green Root Gallery invites you to slow down, wander its sunlit showroom, and discover work from a rotating lineup of local and regional artists who fill the space with color, texture, and personality. Part gallery and part creative hub, this welcoming spot showcases everything from fine art and photography to handcrafted pieces and consignment works, giving visitors plenty of reasons to linger, chat with artists, and take a piece of Downstate Illinois’ vibrant arts scene home with them.

Link Art Gallery

132 S Central Ave, Paris Located in Paris, the Link Art Gallery is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the arts in the local community. The gallery offers a range of programs, including art exhibitions, workshops, community outreach, and scholarships for young artists. It is open to the public and relies on memberships, donations, and grants to support its activities.

The Brubeck Arts Center Gallery 2200 College Dr, Mt. Carmel

The Brubeck Arts Center Gallery at Wabash Valley College in Mt. Carmel is dedicated to showcasing the work of local and regional artists across various mediums. Named in honor of Anne Brubeck, an artist and former art teacher at the college, the gallery frequently hosts nationally renowned collections, including paintings and works of various other mediums such as textiles, pottery, and photography. The gallery is free and open to the public.

S.D. Meadows Folk Art Gallery

Wayward Wovens

The S.D. Meadows Folk Art Gallery, located in Palestine, features vibrant works of homemade non-traditional art. Folk artist, Steve Meadows, takes seemingly normal objects and repurposes them into magical creatures and characters. This quirky destination is a highlight for visitors exploring the oldest town in Illinois, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Wayward Wovens in Du Quoin is a unique art space dedicated to hand-woven textile crafts, showcasing intricate textiles and fiber arts created by Nikki Rathert. Visitors can see Nikki weaving away on one of her many looms and shop for her colorful handmade textile pieces, such as towels and keychains. Wayward Wovens is located inside the Wonder Community Art Studio where Nikki and watercolor artist, Meg, host free programs, and art classes for all ages.

The duo also opens the space up for private event rental upon request.

Art on the Square

Downtown Square, Belleville Art on the Square is a juried fine art event held annually the weekend after Mother’s Day at the Veterans Memorial Fountain in downtown Belleville. Since its inception in 2002, this vibrant celebration of creativity showcases a diverse range of artworks from over 100 artists across the country, making it a highlight of the local events calendar.

Spring Art Show

Corner George Inn and the Preservation Society Mill and Museum, Maeystown Historic Maeystown invites you to experience its annual Spring Art Show, held on select weekends each March.

This charming event takes place at the Corner George Inn’s ballroom and the Preservation Society Mill and Museum, offering a rare glimpse into local artistry. With free admission for both visitors and participating artists, it’s a delightful outing for all ages. Explore the vibrant creations, meet the artists, and immerse yourself in the rich history of Maeystown.

Fine Art Showcase

Olney City Park, Olney The Olney Arts Council Fine Art Showcase is a premier event held in Olney, that provides local artists with the opportunity to display their work across various mediums. Held annually, this showcase spans five days and culminates in an artist reception where awards are presented to outstanding participants. Artists can register their work for adjudication, with the option to sell their pieces afterward, making it a significant occasion for both creators and art lovers in the community.

Midwest Salute to the Arts Moody Park on Longacre, Fairview Heights

Midwest Salute to the Arts is a long-standing arts festival held annually in Fairview Heights which has been celebrating its rich artistic community for over 30 years.

This event features unique works of art, including glass, mixed media, clay, and jewelry, showcasing the talents of both local and regional artists. With live entertainment, food vendors, and more, it offers a festive atmosphere that brings the community together to appreciate the arts.

Arts in the Park

Metter Park, Columbia Hosted by the City of Columbia and the Monroe County Arts Alliance, Arts in the Park is a spirited celebration of local talent, featuring original works by talented artists from the area. Visitors can peruse pieces that are available for viewing and purchase, enjoy performances by community ensembles, and engage in a creative arts area for children.

Younger guests are invited to explore their creative side in the interactive creative kids’ zone.

Fairfield PaintOut

Various Locations, Fairfield The Fairfield PaintOut is an annual plein air festival, where artists work outdoors, showcasing their talents in various mediums such as oils, watercolors, and pastels. Attendees can engage with the artists, witness the creative process, and purchase finished works, making it a must-attend event.

Plein Air Paint Out

Various Locations, Maeystown All are welcome to visit Maeystown for their annual Plein Air Paint Out. Watch as artists create their works in the open air or stop by in the afternoon and look at their finished works on display. This event is a lively and interactive way to experience the entire art creation process from start to finish.

Wabash Valley Wine & Art Festival Main Street, Palestine

The Wabash Valley Wine & Art Festival in Palestine is held on the first weekend in October each year. The festival is free, but you need to purchase a wine glass or a wristband to sample the wine.

This festival brings together both winemakers and artists from around the region and invites attendees to shop for handcrafted goods and sample wine from local vineyards in Illinois.

Street Art Festival

Chalk-A-Lot Street Art Fest

Every September, the streets surrounding the historic Highland Square come alive during the annual Street Art Festival. Watch as artists transform the pavement into canvases with intricate chalk drawings, showcasing styles ranging from surrealism to abstract. Enjoy the creativity of local businesses and talented individuals as they express their artistic vision in this beloved celebration.

The Monroe County Arts Alliance proudly sponsors the Chalk-A-Lot Street Art Fest, held on Waterloo’s Mill Street. Come and witness as artists transform the pavement into exciting 6’ x 10’ masterpieces using only chalk, showcasing a range of styles and creative techniques. This familyfriendly event offers something for everyone, with live music, food vendors, interactive art activities for kids, and more. Bring the whole family for a day of creativity, community, and fun!
