EXPLORE ON FOOT

The best part of this experience is the concrete stairway that leads into the cave, making it accessible even for novice cavers!

Sometimes the best gems require a little trek to reach. With an endless number of bluffs, forests, rivers, and lakes spread across the wonderful fabric of Downstate, there is no shortage of stunning scenery for hikers to take in. Of all the breathtaking trails to tackle, here are a few of our favorites!
Clamber up the steep incline to some of the most awe-inspiring views in Downstate at Salt Lick Point in Valmeyer. This outlook, situated atop a bluff just three miles from the Mississippi River, offers an unparalleled vantage point of the natural beauty of the American Bottoms. Be sure to note that this is a primitive trail, so bring water along!
Step back in time and wander among the old-growth forests of Beall Woods State Park near Mt. Carmel. The park, which spans more than 600 acres along the banks of the Wabash River, is home to multiple trails of varying difficulty that provide unbridled access to virgin forests of America’s great Eastern Woodlands. Some trees in the park reach three feet in diameter and 120 feet tall, making them well worth the trip to witness.
The steep ridges and lush valleys of Fox Ridge State Park near Charleston are ripe for a day of rugged exploration in 2026. Nestled along the scenic Embarras River, this 2,064-acre parcel of public land differs greatly from the otherwise flat prairie landscape of the surrounding area. The hills, bluffs, and sandbars dispersed throughout the park’s dense woodlands will keep you guessing at every turn, making for an unforgettable hiking experience.

MEET A LOCAL VENDOR The Hokestead
What began as a simple passion project has blossomed into a thriving small business rooted in community, craftsmanship, and care for the land.
Founded in 2022 by Kara Hoke, with the support of her husband Tyler, The Hokestead began as a way to share extra plants and produce from the couple’s garden along with honey from their early beekeeping efforts. Shortly after joining the Monroe County Farmers Market in Waterloo, Kara noticed something missing from the vendor lineupnatural body care products. Having previously made lip balms and salves as holiday gifts, she brought a small batch to market mid-season. What started as a small experiment quickly grew into one of The Hokestead’s most beloved offerings.
Today, The Hokestead, located in Hecker, offers more than 30 clean, natural bath and body products crafted with intention. Many ingredients come directly from their land, including beeswax from Tyler’s hives and oils infused with homegrown herbs and flowers. While these products are available yearround online and at events, their farmers market booth showcases a variety of seasonal offerings throughout the growing season.

You’ll find the Hokes every Saturday from late April through October at the Monroe County Farmers Market. In spring, Kara sells heirloom vegetable plants, herbs, and flowers grown without sprays or chemicals. Summer brings fresh produce and bouquets, including heirloom tomatoes, ground cherries, Asian long beans, unique cucumber varieties, and their increasingly popular garlic. When available, customers can also purchase locally harvested honey.

Preparing for market season is truly a year-round effort. Winter months are spent researching and developing new products, while February and March bring seed starting and intensive beekeeping work. By the time the market opens, Kara has carefully built-up bath and body inventory while Tyler prepares the hives for the busy months ahead.
For Kara, the most rewarding part of the farmers market experience is the connection with customers. Seeing familiar faces each week and sharing the story behind what they grow and make builds meaningful relationships within the community. That connection has also helped The Hokestead grow alongside Monroe County.
While Kara is proud of her entire bath and body line, one of her favorite creations is also one of the simplest, her lip gloss. Perfecting the formula took months of trial and research to achieve the ideal balance of moisture, texture, and flavor, reflecting the thoughtful care behind everything The Hokestead produces.
Today, the Hokes are committed to helping the market continue to grow and thrive. Kara serves on the Monroe County Farmers Market board as Marketing Director and Assistant Market Manager, while Tyler now serves as Vice President. Their involvement reflects their appreciation for a market that helped them establish roots and build lasting relationships in the community.
In addition to the farmers market, customers can shop The Hokestead online at thehokestead.com or locally at Kodiak Hollow in Waterloo and My Crafting Attic in Columbia. Kara has also recently expanded her focus on wellness by completing her 200-hour yoga teacher training and now teaches classes at Kodiak Hollow.
Whether you’re picking up heirloom plants in the spring, fresh garlic in early summer, or handcrafted body care products year-round, a purchase from The Hokestead offers a true taste of local living - from the garden and the hive straight to the farmer’s market.

A Century on the Road
Two legendary highways. One hundred years of American adventure. US Route 50, stretching coast-to-coast as part of the historic Ocean Highway system, has connected travelers across Illinois since 1926. Route 66, the Mother Road herself, begins her iconic journey in Chicago before winding 2,400 miles to the Pacific. Together, these centenarian routes transformed how America moves—and they're still rolling strong today.

Though much has changed over the last 100 years, two things have stayed the same. United States Routes 50 and 66 have stood the test of time as the region's main thoroughfares, connecting small towns and larger cities alike. A century after the first travelers put rubber to asphalt on these historic roads, the spirit of the Great American Road Trip is still alive and well. Delicious local restaurants, quirky roadside attractions, and unique shopping opportunities still dot the map as these routes make their way through Downstate, and all you have to do is get out there and find them!

Natural Beauty, Man-Made Fun
One of the best ways to experience Downstate Illinois is by letting someone else do the driving. With daily service into Centralia via Amtrak, travelers can step off the train and straight into a destination that blends wide-open outdoor adventure with small-town charm - no car required to get started.

If nature is what you seek, Lake Centralia offers more than 400 acres of navigable water, welcoming boats under 21 feet and providing plenty of space for fishing, paddling, and laidback days on the water. Prefer to stay on land? The surrounding woodlands are dotted with hiking trails, campsites, and peaceful spots to slow down and soak in the scenery.
Catch a Game, and a Tan
One tank of gas is all you need to reach Eastern Illinois University in Charleston and catch the action of its NCAA Division I teams. Spring and summer offer plenty of opportunities to enjoy outdoor competitions, from the fast-paced energy of beach volleyball and track & field to the relaxed precision of men’s and women’s golf. Panthers baseball runs February through May, giving you multiple chances to soak up America’s pastime while cheering on EIU studentathletes. If history is more your style, be sure to visit the LincolnDouglas Debate Museum

After a full day outdoors, head back into town to round out your trip. The newly opened Centralia House delivers an elevated take on Cajun cuisine in the heart of downtown, making it the perfect post-adventure stop. Whether you’re visiting for a day or turning your train trip into a full weekend getaway, Centralia offers the rare combination of easy access, natural beauty, and memorable local flavor, all just a train ride away.

For a blend of scenic beauty and family-friendly hospitality, visit Warren James Winery in Mattoon. This family-owned vineyard serves delicious flatbreads in a picturesque setting, complete with wildflowers, sunflowers, a pond, and a relaxing patio. If you’re looking to extend your stay, the Hilton Garden Inn in Mattoon offers a comfortable place to unwind.
