Five Years of Fresh-Brewed Fun Here in Downstate, we believe that every great trip starts with a great cup of coffee. Whether it’s a sweet, milky concoction served over ice or a steamy, dark brew with subtler flavors, there is no better way to fuel a day of adventure among the region's vibrant communities. This sentiment is widely shared amongst the people who live in the area and make it such a wonderful place to visit, with nearly every city having at least one carefully curated space dedicated to the beverage. Each space tells a story about the town and those who live in it, and the Southern Illinois Coffee Trail invites travelers to discover that story firsthand. It’s hard to believe it's been five years since the launch of the Southern Illinois Coffee Trail. What started as an idea to highlight the amazing coffee shops and cafés of Southern Illinois has grown into a regional phenomenon that draws locals and visitors alike to explore the region each fall. At its inception, the trail featured just 28 shops across the Discover Downstate Illinois region. Though small in size, the concept was a smash hit, and we haven’t looked back since! With wind in its sails, the Coffee Trail was off to the races in subsequent years. Expansion to include more shops and collaboration with surrounding tourism bureaus was the logical next step. After all, the goal was to highlight the amazing coffee purveyors across all of Southern Illinois. Over the years, the trail grew to nearly three times the original size. Key partnerships with Visit Effingham, Southernmost Illinois Tourism, and VisitSI have allowed the trail to expand far beyond original expectations and bring the joy of great coffee to anyone traveling across the southern tip of the state. 2

At its core, the Southern Illinois Coffee Trail is about connecting with fellow coffee lovers and making memories that will last a lifetime. That sense of connection is one of the things that makes the Southern Illinois Coffee Trail so special. While the coffee itself is certainly worth the trip, it’s the people behind the counter and the communities surrounding each shop that leave a lasting impression. Kerri Smith, who visited every stop on the trail in 2025, found exactly that. Along the way, she was welcomed with friendly conversations, local recommendations, and encouragement from fellow coffee lovers. Her journey became about much more than collecting stamps—it became a memorable exploration of Southern Illinois and the people who call it home. In participating, you’ll also get to immerse yourself in the beautiful patchwork of communities that make up our vibrant region. Charming small-town shops, suburban social hubs, and innovative rural coffee stands highlight the creative nature of the area and serve as a vessel for deeper exploration of local culture. If you plan to make a trek to the far reaches of the trail’s expansive footprint, we encourage you to make a day of it and indulge in other local attractions along the journey. Supporting local businesses is as rewarding as it is fun, and there is no shortage of things to do between point A and point B in Downstate. Shops lined floor to ceiling with locally crafted goods, antique stores with warehouses full of unique finds, historical destinations that reveal Illinois’ place in the greater American story, and outdoor escapes that will make you feel like you have been transported to another world are just a few of the amazing experiences waiting to be discovered. All you have to do is hit the road! For anyone planning a trip this fall, the trail offers more than a good cup of coffee; it offers a chance to slow down, explore a few small towns, and discover the people who help give the region its character.

2026 Fall/Winter Tourism Times
Just past the city limits of Hoyleton in rural Washington County sits an unassuming family farmstead that has spent the last 19 years making agricultural experiences accessible to visitors from near and far. What started in 2007 as a humble 10-acre plot of land next to the Herrmann family’s existing property has grown into an essential autumn destination for many in the region. Each year, owners Carl and Charlene find new ways to keep the farmyard fresh and exciting. In the years since opening the property to the public, the Herrmann family has experienced its share of ups and downs. As the business has grown, so has the family. They have welcomed five new children, bringing the total to twelve, ranging in age from 30 to 10. That keeps Charlene, who homeschools the children through eighth grade, busy even during the slower season for crops. The Herrmann children also inspired the name of the property. Drawing from one of the family’s favorite television shows, Little House on the Prairie, the Country Kids name began as a term of endearment to reflect the family’s humble beginnings in the early years of the pumpkin patch. The name eventually stuck, both for the children and for the farm itself.
A strong focus on family and a deep passion for agriculture continue to drive the operation forward year after year. With each season, new lessons, techniques, and equipment help the crew at Country Kids create an even better experience for visitors. Those small improvements have added up over time, turning the farm into a true haven for fall fun. From a broken John Deere lawn mower and a hand-planted pumpkin patch in the first year, the Hermanns have gradually transformed the property into a modern agricultural attraction. Country Kids is no run-of-the-mill pumpkin patch and corn maze combo. The property features a sprawling playground that keeps visitors of all ages entertained for hours. Pedal go-karts, life-sized board games, axe throwing, and a farm-themed basketball shooting game are just a few of the activities guests can enjoy during a day on the farm. Country Kids also hosts regular pig and Corgi races, which have become fan favorites. The momentum built over the last 19 years shows no signs of slowing down, Charlene says, with a new batch of additions planned for the 2026 season. Most notably, a brandnew concessions area will welcome visitors back to the farm this year,
bringing a mouthwatering lineup of fall favorites with it. Apple cider donuts, kettle corn, cider slushies, and familiar soft drinks are just a few of the treats that will round out an exciting day of play. A miniature farm and train display will also make its triumphant return for the first time in more than ten years. Carl and Charlene are optimistic about the future of Country Kids Pumpkin Patch and hope to see the business grow alongside the community for years to come. “Our long-term hopes and goals for Country Kids are to create a fun, affordable, and entertaining experience for families, young and old alike,” Charlene says. If you’re planning a fall outing this season, Country Kids Pumpkin Patch is well worth the drive to Hoyleton. Between its familyfriendly activities, seasonal treats, and ever-growing list of attractions, the farm continues to offer a memorable autumn experience for guests of all ages. Known as the “First Road” in Illinois, the KaskaskiaCahokia Trail is the ultimate historical 60-mile road trip. This was my first time on this over 300-yearold trail, and as we traveled through historical sites and small towns, I learned so much about the early history of Illinois. The first stop on our trip through the trail was the Holy Family Church in Cahokia. Founded in 1699, it is the oldest continuous Catholic parish in the United States. The log church that stands there today was built from the salvaged remains of the original structure, which burned down in 1740; the newly built church was dedicated in 1799. Close to the Holy Family Church, the Cahokia Courthouse is another log structure tucked away at the end of a cobblestone path. Built in 1740, the courthouse has served many purposes and stood in several locations over the years. The courthouse was moved to St. Louis for the 1904 World’s Fair, then to Jackson Park in Chicago, before returning to its original site in 1972—securing its legacy in Cahokia. Inside, exhibits show what the courtroom looked like during its years in use. Our next stop was Proving Ground Café and Roaster in Columbia. A true small-town gem, Proving Grounds serves beautifully crafted coffee and pastries. I ordered a vanilla latte and a lemon poppyseed muffin, and both items were excellent. The shop has plenty of seating and has the perfect cozy atmosphere to start off the day. Proving Ground Café

To continue onto the rest of our stops on the Kaskaskia-Cahokia Trail, we traveled to the Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam in Modoc, which is located on the confluence of the Mississippi and Kaskaskia rivers. This area offers a beautiful waterfront view, and has a campsite with boating ramps, making it the perfect spot for camping and a day on the water. Overlooking the Mississippi River and inside one of Chester’s oldest buildings is the St. Nicholas Landmark restaurant. The restaurant is decorated with antique bicycles, stained glass windows, and still has the original stone floors. They make their craft beers in-house, ensuring the best quality local beer. As we ate from St. Nicholas’ delicious menu, we enjoyed listening to the train as it passed right by the restaurant. After lunch, we headed into downtown Chester, where the community pays tribute to its hometown icon, Popeye, through the Popeye Character Trail. Throughout the area, we found statues of various characters from the popular comic strip. We then stopped into Spinach Can Collectibles, which serves as a Popeye gift shop, museum, and antique store. The shop showcases years of Popeye memorabilia, from comic strips to dolls.
Fueled by coffee and curiosity, we continued toward Waterloo to visit Eagle Cliff-Miles Cemetery. Buried in the cemetery are many veterans, including some who served in the Revolutionary War and Civil War. Built directly into the hillside at the cemetery is the Miles Mausoleum, a marble and limestone structure commissioned by Stephen W. Miles in 1858. In front of the Mausoleum is a beautiful view of the forests and farmland that make up our region. We traveled 30 miles through stunning rolling bluffs from the cemetery to Fort de Chartres in Prairie du Rocher, immersing ourselves in Illinois’ Revolutionary War-era history. The Fort was built by the French in the 1750s and hosts Rendezvous events, held annually in the summer and winter. We explored the grounds and found a French colonialinspired kitchen garden and their on-site museum. The museum has engaging exhibits depicting life for those who lived inside and around the fort.
Across the Historic Iron Chester Bridge and deep in rural Illinois is the Kaskaskia Bell Memorial, or the “Liberty Bell of the West.” The bell was purchased by King Louis XV in 1741 and given to the Catholic Church in Illinois. It was rung in 1778 to celebrate the United States’ liberation from England. With a press of a button, we were able to view this historic symbol from behind a gate. The scenic Kaskaskia-Cahokia Trail holds so much of Illinois history, and it was such an educational experience to be able to explore part of it. Whether you're a history buff, road trip enthusiast, or simply looking for a new way to experience Downstate Illinois, the Kaskaskia-Cahokia Trail offers an unforgettable journey through the people, places, and stories that shaped the Prairie State.
