This 86-acre living history farm features a reconstructed two-room cabin on its original site, historic farmsteads, and the Moore Home, where Lincoln bid farewell to his family before leaving for the presidency. Originally built in 1832 as the Jackson Covered Bridge and rebuilt several times, the current structure was completed in 2001 as a faithful replica of the original. Built in 1917 and beautifully restored, Flora’s Train Depot now houses a museum, event space, and a 23-foot miniature train display. The layout features two moving trains, mountain backdrops, and a live-feed camera offering a passenger’seye view on a 70-inch screen. Visitors can also explore transportation artifacts from the early 1900s and local railroad history, making it a highlight for train lovers of all ages.

Twin Lakes Park, Paris A community favorite since 1895, Twin Lakes Park is the perfect spot for outdoor fun and relaxation. Visitors can boat, kayak, or paddle across the scenic waters, then enjoy a round of miniature golf, a game on the lighted horseshoe courts, or a stroll through the picnic areas. With a large shelter house, a professional league baseball diamond, and plenty of space to explore, it’s a top destination for familyfriendly recreation in Paris.

This disc golf course features 18 holes with concrete tees, DISCatcher Pro targets, and a mix of wooded and open shots for all skill levels. Established in 2022, it’s cart and dog-friendly, with parking near hole one and refreshments available at the golf clubhouse.

Sunflower Broom Shop, Crossville

Venture over to White County to shop handcrafted brooms that are as functional as they are beautiful. America’s Highway

The year 2026 marks an especially important anniversary for one of Downstate’s most recognizable landmarks. Route 66, America’s “Mother Road”, celebrates its 100th anniversary on this trip around the sun. While the high-speed lanes of Interstate 55 have long since bypassed the original stretch of asphalt and concrete, it remains an Americana icon that adorns bucket lists and attracts visitors from far and wide. Manifesting itself as a winding two-lane thoroughfare pieced together from patches of county roads and the former Illinois Route 4, Route 66 is more than just a road. It’s a road trip out west, hitting multiple national parks and enjoying everimportant family bonding time. It’s a greasy cheeseburger at a roadside drive-in, washed down by the rich sweetness of a chocolate milkshake. It’s classic muscle cars. It’s neon signs. It’s a time capsule to a bygone era that can be cracked open to partake in one of the most quintessentially American experiences to ever exist.

Formed in 1926 by the Bureau of Public Roads as part of the original American numbered highway system, Route 66 served as a popular trucking route across the state before World War II. As the post-war tourism boom merged with the growing car culture of the 1950s, this road quickly became the center of it all. Stainless steel-laden diners and cozy motels complemented widened lanes and higher speed limits to create the Great American Road Trip. In the years since, it has grown into an emblem of America’s rise to cultural prominence in the 20th century. And the best part, this living testament to history can still be experienced in all its glory to this day. Downstate Illinois is lucky enough to be home to a short portion of the Mother Road, making it an essential destination for any celebratory Route 66 road trip in 2026. The region’s most notable landmark on the historic stretch of highway is World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison. The track, which hosts everything from the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series to the Enjoy Illinois 300 NASCAR Cup Series, pays homage to the car-centric history of Route 66 in almost everything it does. Outside of high-octane on-track events, WWTR also hosts the Celebration of 66 Festival in conjunction with their annual NTT INDYCAR Series Bommarito Automotive Group 500 race. Classic car lovers will also find a home at the complex. For the first time ever in 2026, WWTR will play host to Bloomington Gold, June 11-13th, the largest gathering and judging of classic Corvettes in the world. With these events and many more to come, WWTR is truly a destination for history lovers and car enthusiasts alike. Historic National Road, Marshall

As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, it’s a time to reflect on the people, places, and industries that helped shape the nation. In Illinois, that story is etched into the land. From historic roads that carried settlers west to the resources that powered growing communities. Downstate Illinois offers a front-row seat to this legacy, where infrastructure, industry, and innovation helped build not just a state, but a nation.

TH E ROAD TH AT REROUT ED HI ST ORY The National Road, often called the Cumberland Road, holds a pivotal place in American history as the first federally funded highway. Its creation was championed by early leaders like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, who saw the need for a trans-Appalachian route to unify the growing nation and promote westward expansion. In 1806, under Jefferson’s presidency, Congress authorized its construction, and by 1811, the first 10 miles were built in Cumberland, Maryland. Over the next two decades, the road extended westward, eventually spanning six states: Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, where it reached its original endpoint in Vandalia in 1839. The National Road opened vital trade routes, encouraged migration, and helped knit together a young and rapidly expanding country. Today, its path lives on in U.S. Route 40, and many of the towns that grew along its route still showcase remnants of its historic legacy. As it extended westward into Illinois, the road helped establish key towns in Downstate Illinois that remain vibrant today. In Marshall, travelers can marvel at the World’s Largest Gavel, take in the National Road mural, and explore the town’s collection of regal lion statues. Just down the road, Casey delights visitors with 11 Guinness World Record attractions, over 20 larger-than-life installations, and group dining at Richards Farm Restaurant, home of the World’s Largest Pitchfork. In Vandalia, the western terminus of the original National Road, history buffs can tour the Vandalia Statehouse, explore the National Road Interpretive Center, take a tour at Witness Distillery, and enjoy a meal at Blind Society before settling in for the night at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites. ILLIN O I S ’ TI E S T O T H E O I L I NDU ST RY When reflecting on the industries that built Illinois, oil may not be the first to come to mind, but its impact has been profound, especially across the Central and Eastern regions of Downstate Illinois. The state's oil and natural gas sector continues to play a vital role in the economy, generating $23.7 billion in 2022, which accounts for 5.8% of Illinois’ total economy. According to a 2016 economic report, Illinois oilfield production contributes $3 billion in annual economic impact, supports 14,000 jobs, and generates $700 million in tax revenue, including $330 million in state tax dollars.¹ The roots of this powerful industry run deep. Commercial oil production in Illinois began in 1905, yielding 181,000 barrels that year, though exploratory wells date back even earlier to the 1860s in Clark county. Over time, oil operations spread across the Illinois Basin, a vast geological formation that includes 40 of the state’s 102 counties and has seen the drilling of more than 155,000 oil, gas, and injection wells since 1853.² For those curious to see how this chapter of Illinois history comes to life, the Illinois Oil Field Museum in Oblong offers a compelling experience. Located in the heart of oil country, the museum tells the story of the region’s oil boom through vintage equipment, engaging exhibits, and personal stories from the people who lived it. The term “blacksmith” probably conjures up ideas of medieval forgers crafting hunks of hot iron into various armor. However, the term takes on a whole new meaning at the Five Points Blacksmith Shop in Charleston, Illinois. In this unassuming shop on the edge of town, all kinds of repurposed metal are heated to a white-hot temperature and transformed into one-of-a-kind artwork that is sure to amaze. The artist behind the anvil, Lorelei Sims, has been churning out jawdropping metalwork art pieces for over 30 years. From life-like candlesticks to large-scale outdoor installations, there are truly no limits to Sims’ skill and creativity. By partnering with other local craftspeople who specialize in powder coating and laser cutting, she brings her creations to life.

Seeing Lorelei in action is truly something to behold. Smooth, quick transitions from the piping hot forge to the fizzling quench station are a work of art within themselves. As steam billows to the dusty rafters, the hum of a 110-year-old power hammer comes alive. Just as a sculptor melds clay into their desired shape, Sims uses the crushing force of the power hammer to flatten her superheated steel to the correct form and thickness. From there, a whirlwind of sparks and specialized tools twist and bend each piece, yielding a nearly finished product that only needs assembly and polishing work.

Becoming a world-class metal crafter did not happen overnight. Sims fondly recalled the process of navigating the art show circuit early in her career, which included sleepless nights, endless days of driving, and a considerable amount of trial and error in identifying her target market. After years of hard work and countless coast-to-coast road trips, she finally nailed down her clientele, and the rest is history!

Outside of crafting commission work, which is a huge portion of what she does, Sims is very passionate about teaching new blacksmiths the basics and passing on the trade that has played such a central role in her life. Giving locals a chance to come out, get their hands a little dirty, and create functional art pieces of their own ensures that the trade continues. These workshops, open to all ages, begin with the basics and progress to more advanced techniques. Classes are hosted at 5 Mile House Smithy, also in Charleston, with registration available via phone or Facebook.

When asked about the challenges she faced as a woman trying to break into a predominantly male field, Lorelei couldn’t help but chuckle. She stated that while there probably were some hurdles, she never really noticed them. “I guess ignorance really is bliss,” she claimed. Her warm personality and eagerness to learn the secrets of a highly skilled trade helped her shine in the field from day one. For those interested in purchasing some of Lorelei’s art, you’re in luck! She has a website that showcases examples of previous projects. Additionally, her site provides a long list of resources for individuals who wish to learn more about the trade. Pay homage to the industrial prowess of 19th-century Illinois at the Labor and Industry Museum in Belleville. This small but mighty museum showcases a variety of equipment and products that originated from the region’s factories in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Additionally, the Union Hall exhibit highlights the struggles of labor movements during the period, both locally and nationally. The museum’s collection continues in its detached annex building, where pieces are proudly focused on displaying women's role in labor and public life following the civil war.

Housed in a former church building that dates to 1867, the Fayette County Museum in Vandalia is one of the best-curated municipal museums in the region. With exhibits that occupy almost every inch of the two-floor building, this historical site is a wonder to behold for history buffs. Their wonderfully welcoming curators will greet you at the door and share their wealth of knowledge with any visitor, making this detour well worth it!

All aboard the history train! Step back in time to when train travel was king and Greenup was at the edge of the American frontier. This original 1870s train depot has been expertly preserved and outfitted with display cases highlighting a treasure trove of local history. Two separate buildings on campus welcome visitors to stop in for a while and immerse themselves in the stories of days past in Cumberland County.

Lincoln Douglas Debate Museum – Charleston

Retrace the steps of Illinois’ most famous resident during his early political career at the Lincoln-Douglas Debate Museum in Charleston. Physical artifacts and interactive displays allow visitors to take a selfguided tour of the seven historically significant debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas along the Senate campaign trail in 1858. This stateof-the-art facility sits at the location of one such debate, inviting history lovers to stand in the presence of greatness.

Paris is home to art experiences that blend history, community, and hands-on fun.
