A PROGRAM BUILT FOR YOUNG CATTLEMEN CONTINUES TO THRIVE WITH A THIRD CLASS OF EXCITING INDIVIDUALS
During the 2024 Illinois State Fair, welve beef producers from across the state gathered together to kick off their year in the Beef Leadership Academy. Then, in late October, the group reconvened to delve into the first of four developmental pillars on which the program is built.
Beef Leadership Academy, otherwise known as BLA, is a year-long program designed to help identify, develop, and encourage the next generation of leaders within the Illinois cattle industry. BLA utilizes industry tours, educational sessions, and team-building activities to advance participants’ leadership capabilities and industry knowledge.
The first pillar of BLA places emphasis on personal leadership development. This year, we teamed up with ADM to host the third cohort of BLA in Decatur for two days of programming, fun and fellowship. The in-person event kicked off with a warm welcome from Vice President of ADM State Government Relations, Greg Webb. Programming continued with a thorough personal leadership development training facilitated by ADM development staff. Later the group toured the ADM North America
Headquarters. The time spent at ADM revealed important leadership traits amongst each participant and helped highlight the importance of allied industry support within the state.
To bolster the programs offering, alongside professional development, BLA also provides participants an inside look into Illinois cattle operations within each stage of production.
The group’s time in Decatur was supplemented with a visit to Head Bros Land & Cattle in Blue Mound to tour one of the state’s premier cow/ calf operations. Valuable time was spent with the Head family discussing operation specifics and touring the farm. Before participants departed, Malcolm and Susan Head emphasized the importance of being involved and taking on leadership roles.
With one pillar under their belt, the third BLA class has three pillars to look forward to. Pillar II will familiarize participants with advocacy and telling their story. They will also have the opportunity to see a cattle backgrounding operation. Pillar III will

focus on the business component of the beef industry and will be supplemented with a feedlot visit and discussion. Finally, the capstone pillar of BLA is when each participant will travel to Springfield to meet with their senators and legislators at the Capitol. Pillar IV is the time when participants put to work all the tools they polished and perfected throughout the year-long program.
Beef Leadership Academy is creating a pipeline of capable, passionate, and well-equipped leaders for the future of our industry. We are excited to see the third cohort continue to grow and develop as they progress through the program.
