Illinois Beef Association is one of six farm groups in the Illinois Farm Families coalition. Together, IBA, Illinois Corn, Illinois Soybean, Illinois Farm Bureau, Illinois Pork, and Midwest Dairy work to increase consumer confidence in farmers and farming practices by connecting shared values and enhancing understanding of agriculture - specifically in the Chicagoland region.
Last weekend, the Chicago Wolves hockey team faced off against the Grand Rapids Griffins for an incredible win, both in the barn (a.k.a. on the rink) and at the Illinois Farm Families booth, where many attendees stopped by to visit with farmer volunteers. The evening was the last of a five-game partnership where IFF set up a booth and had farmers handing out activity books, educational resources, playing ‘Farm Four’ and engaging with parents and consumers throughout the game.
Throughout the three periods of the hockey game, volunteers dressed in this season’s IFF Chicago Wolves special edition jersey, encouraging attendees to sign up for the Illinois Farm Families monthly email newsletter for a chance to win a jersey themselves!
The Chicago Wolves hosted an IFF trivia contest during the game, where one lucky fan was selected at random to answer questions on Illinois farm facts for a chance for their entire row to win the custom IFF jerseys as well.
At the booth, volunteers played ‘Farm Four’, a game similar to Connect Four, however each game piece has a unique Illinois farm fact on it. During game, volunteers also handed out IFF activity books, with QR codes that send visitors back to the IFF website for kids, which features word searches, puzzles, and coloring images all with farm-focused facts and tidbits. The booth also displays a variety of Illinois products, like sweet corn, field corn, soybeans, steaks, and milk which have scannable codes to drive visitors back to blog posts focused on farm commodities.
In person events, such as the Chicago Wolves partnership, are just one of the many promotions IFF uses to target Chicagoland parents and residents with farm friendly messaging. Through the power of social media, IFF also connects with Chicago audiences via Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, and the campaign’s WatchUsGrow.org website. In addition, IFF launched a Farmer Ambassador program three years ago, where six Illinois farmers teamed up as agriculture’s brand ambassadors, trained to be minifarm-influencers, to share educational content and to share their own farm stories on social media outlets, as well as through the IFF channels. IBA has helped several young farmers join this program, including Trevor Maiers of Payson, Lena Head of Blue Mound, and currently, Rebecca Walker of Altamont.
