Illinois Weekly Summary June 10, 2024
by Devin Bollman & Kaitlyn Zeedyk
This summer the Illinois Beef Association has hired a summer intern to offer opportunities to expand skills, knowledge, and insight from within the Illinois beef industry. Kaitlyn Zeedyk, a recent Lincoln Land graduate, is spending her summer with our staff before heading off to Iowa State University this fall.
Kaitlyn started her internship at IBA on April 1 and hit the ground running. Her internship includes working on “all things beef” with the rest of the staff this summer, and familiarizing herself with the different opportunities, events, and jobs we do.
Familiar with the agriculture industry, the Ohio native offers aid in many of IBA’s summer programs, including Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom’s Summer Ag Institutes, junior programs, IBA Annual Meeting, and a variety of other endeavors. In the first half of her summer internship, Kaitlyn has traveled across the state already for the Southern Illinois Cattlemen Connect Education Series, Summer Ag Institutes, and the Illinois Junior Beef Tour. Kaitlyn’s assistance in planning programs and seeing them through has been an exciting opportunity for both her and the IBA.
Getting to Know Kaitlyn Zeedyk, IBA Intern
I grew up on a grain and sheep farm in northwestern Ohio, so I was not overly familiar with the Illinois beef industry apart from my involvement on the LLCC Judging Team. The IBA team made me feel right at home and comfortable in my new position.
One of the first tasks I took on that will be ongoing throughout the summer is managing updates and improvements to the IBA website. You may have noticed some changes, including new pictures, the Cattlemen’s Calendar, and updated information across the site.
As a showman in the livestock industry, the show ring was something I became very familiar with. Annie let me have full control of the IJBA Points Show Program and I have enjoyed putting names with faces of the junior members in and out of the show ring.
Do not get me wrong, being in the office has its advantages but I love taking on the jobs that happen outside the office. One of my favorite projects that is just starting to take off is
traveling around the state for IATC. This was something very new to me, but I have enjoyed every part of it. I created my own PowerPoint about why beef is awesome, to present to the teachers we are training through the program. I also put together bags full of resources for the teachers to use when they get back to their classrooms and begin using our beef information to teach their grade school students.
I decided to tag along on the Junior Beef Tour to Macomb this summer, too. This tour was very influential for me not being raised with a beef background. The Southern CCES meeting, Whiteside County Cattlemen’s Banquet, and our Annual Meeting & Awards Ceremony were a few of the big events that allowed me to meet new people associated with Illinois Beef.
This internship and summer have absolutely flown by. I look forward to meeting new and past members of the association as well as the upcoming Illinois State Fair. Hope to see you there!
