As a beef producer, your focus day in and day out is producing a safe, high-quality beef product. Whether that product ends up on your plate, your neighbor’s plate, or even someone across the state’s plate – you are providing one of the top protein sources for families and consumers in today’s world. As a beef council, we are driving the demand for beef through the promotion of beef consumption, research and educating consumers with resources provided by your checkoff dollar so you can focus on your day to day – being a beef producer.
The beef checkoff is a national, producer-funded program, initiated by beef producers in 1988 with four tenets:
1) All producers and importers pay $1/ head every time a beef animal is sold throughout its lifetime.
2) State Beef Councils (such as Illinois Beef Association) collect the dollar and submit half to the national Beef Checkoff program, and determine how the remaining 50 cents is utilized within the state
3) All national Checkoff-funded programs are budgeted and evaluated by the producer-volunteer organization, the
by Devin BollmanCattlemen’s Beef Board (CBB).
4) CBB members are nominated by producer organizations within their state and appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture
Beyond the national Checkoff dollar, Illinois has an additional state Checkoff of 50 cents. This allows Illinois to have access to a dollar per head of beef cattle sold each time in its lifetime.
So where are those funds going, and what does it mean to you as a beef producer contributing to the beef checkoff?
As Illinois’ state beef council, IBA uses your checkoff investment to drive the demand for beef amongst
consumers. We do this across the state, through digital marketing platforms and e-commerce promotions, as well as inperson events where we can showcase beef. We also focus on educational resources for youth and adult audiences, which increases awareness and informs consumers about the value of beef in a daily diet. It is all designed to increase retail sales of beef and build consumer loyalty to our Illinois farm-raised beef product. With inflation, it is no surprise that cost and value is a huge driver of consumer shopping habits – we are seeing it on our farms through the production side, and consumers are seeing it in the grocery stores and retail
