ILLINOIS BEEF ASSOCIATION RELFECTS ON THE HIGHLIGHTS OF 2022

The year is ending, and as most folks do, we reflect on what the last 365 days have entailed. Illinois Beef Association has much to be thankful for – new members, leaders, and staff, added programs and services, and strong results across the board. It is our wish that IBA continues to bring value and a positive impact on you and your operation in 2023.

If 2021 was a year of challenges for U.S. cattlemen, then perhaps we can celebrate 2022 as the year of change. While it wasn’t without its own set of complications, I think most producers are able to end the year reflecting on the positive that came our way over the last 12 months.

Here at IBA, we’ve seen some great developments since we last rang in the new year; from policy successes in Springfield and Washington, D.C., to checkoff program growth and expansion, we’re doing more each day to advocate and promote your Illinois beef operations.

In the legislature, we were successful at securing additional

monies for state veterinarians, as part of a goal to increase Illinois’ preparedness for animal disease threats. By working with a group of other farm organizations and the Illinois Department of Agriculture, IBA members are now seeing more DVMs hired throughout the state as part of a team working on risk management and support for Illinois’ livestock industry.

Programs and services from the association have grown this year, in conjunction with the addition of new staff here at the office. We’re doing more to support local meat processors and local beef promotions, along with added marketing programs under the “Beef. It’s What’s for Dinner,” brand. We have also added more local workshops and educational seminars under our “Cattlemen Connect” program. Our Beef Leadership program kicked off in 2022, with a class of 10 great young cattlemen and women from across the state working together to forge a network of tomorrow’s industry leaders.

Staff additions include Annie Schoetmer as manager of programs and services here at IBA, along side Olivia Hoots as publications and business operations manager. I joined this spring as well, in the membership and communications manager role.

Our Board of Governors welcomed several newly elected directors this year, too, including Garrett Mattox from Anna, Joan Harrison from Minier, Anna Flikkema from Lanark, and Carol Lock from Avon.

IBA’s office relocated this year and is now open for business on the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, between the Junior Livestock Barn and the Open Sheep Barn. We hope it makes us easier to find and more accessible.

We would like to encourage beef producers and industry folk to invest in yourself in the new year, set goals and take time away from the barns, pastures, and fields to be with family and friends. Happy holidays and see you next year.
