My commitment

The old adage about your money and your mouth holds true for Scott Foshie. As a new pastor in Illinois, Foshie led his church to make a bold move—opposite the downward trend in Cooperative Program giving which has slipped over a couple of decades from the customary 10% to just under 5% in many churches in many states.

While per-church giving in Illinois is a percentage point higher than the national SBC average, Foshie encouraged courageous giving by his church—to three times the national average. Here’s the story from Foshie’s recent Illinois Baptist interview:

I believe many of our churches want to give more to the Cooperative Program, but they’re also facing challenges like personnel and ministry. All of us have been dealing with inflation. But if we think of percentage giving, it’s a beautiful way to plan for missions—because as the church grows, the giving can grow.

I think Jesus didn’t see numbers. He didn’t see amounts. He did see percentages. Remember he pointed out the widow’s mite gift. She gave 100%. It wasn’t a lot of money, but to Jesus, it was everything. I think that percentage giving is a way to promote healthy giving and the amount in total dollars

Increasing our church’s CP giving to 15% was a big commitment. But it was the right one.

will grow as the church grows.

When I was pastor there, I led Steeleville Baptist Church to give 15% to the Cooperative Program. That was a big commitment—at the same time we were conducting a building campaign. And I admit that as pastor, I felt it. But missions came first.

I believe we’re better together as partner churches when we’re able to put our resources together. We fund over 3,700 full-time missionaries, church planting happening all over North America, and the church growth and health ministries of IBSA. We have a servant team here at IBSA that helps our churches thrive. I believed in that then. I believe in it even more now. There’s no better way that I have found to impact lostness with the light of the gospel than to give cooperatively as part of the Illinois Baptist family. The Cooperative Program is a worthy investment that has eternal impact.

Grow your church’s passion for missions

Now is a good time to teach the next generation about our unified systematic missions giving. The people coming into positions of leadership in many churches may not know as much about CP or the value of the commitment to missions giving that has united Southern Baptists across the decades.

In many places, there is evidence of a return to the “societal method” of missions giving that was prevalent from the early 1700s until CP was created in 1925 to end the endless appeals for individual projects.

Let’s share the value of cooperative missions—again.

1 Highlight missions stories in worship.

“52 Sundays” is a series of short reports about SBC missionaries and their mission fields. The slides can be projected on screen in an announcement loop, and they can be printed in the bulletin or distributed separately. The impact of CP missions giving becomes real when the congregation meets the missionaries.

2 Go digital. Go social. At IBSA.org, look for the Cooperative Program tab at the top of the page. There are videos and downloads of all kinds to share the story online, social media, and at your church’s website. And SBC.net has a CP page too with a digital package with images and logos and elements for your use.

3 Observe CP Sunday during October (or anytime).

Show church members where their CP giving goes with downloadable cards highlighting ministries they support through the Illinois Baptist State Association. Share testimonies from students who have attended IBSA camps, leaders trained at IBSA events, or people who have engaged with state missions.

4 Publish the chart.

Look at the CP Percentage chart on page 7B. Make your church’s version by taking the annual CP offering amount and multiplying it by each of these percentages or contact IBSA and we’ll send you a custom report. The congregation will see how their giving supports a wide range of missions work. Show how offerings from almost 48,000 SBC churches add up to nearly $200 million in missions and ministry.

5 Plan a class. Tell our story.

New members and young Baptists should know our story. Resources such as Meet Southern Baptists are available at SBC. net and IBSA.org .
