ZIZU EDITOR’S NOTE As I stand at this bittersweet crossroads of graduation, I'm filled with both nostalgia for what we've created and exhilaration for what comes next: reimagining MINT as Zizu™ (pronounced "ZEE-zoo").

The name ZIZU derives from the characters (pronounced "zì zú" in Chinese and "ji-soku" in Japanese), meaning "selfsufficient" or "content with oneself." This concept beautifully captures our mission of celebrating the inherent value in everyone's authentic story and embracing the radical idea that you are enough, just as you are.

While leaving IIT creates a pang of sadness, I'm energized by boundless potential. My vision is evolving this publication into an innovative hub connecting prospective students with authentic campus experiences, companies with emerging talent, and young innovators with platforms to shine. By integrating generative AI with human creativity, we're building a space where storytelling transforms into meaningful connections that transcend traditional resumes. This issue is also unique because it’s embedded with little videos to give you a peak of the behind the scenes as well as an audio narration using AI.

From Tigray to Chicago Melat Zeru's path to the United States began when she was just 12 years old. Leaving behind the familiar landscapes of Tigray to join her father in Chicago, Melat faced the challenge of adjusting to a new life in a foreign land. “I came here not knowing a word of English,” she recalls. “I had to learn everything from scratch, which made it hard to make friends, even with my cousins who had already adapted.” But through perseverance, she found her way, navigating the complexities of a new culture while holding tightly to her Ethiopian roots.

Mekdes Kidanemariam, born in the U.S. but raised in Ethiopia until she was five, shares a similar story of navigating between two worlds. Returning to America as a teenager, she had to reacquaint herself with the English language, having forgotten much of it while immersed in her homeland. “It was like I never fully belonged to either place,” Mekdes reflects, “but Ethiopia will always be my anchor.”

A Friendship Forged in Familiarity For both women, the struggle of adapting to life in the U.S. was softened by their chance meeting at a Tigrayan community BBQ in Chicago. “I heard someone say ‘Selam,’ and I immediately felt a connection,” Melat says. Mekdes, having just returned from Ethiopia, responded in Tigrigna, and from that moment, the two became inseparable. “It felt like meeting a piece of home,” Mekdes shares. Their bond grew over the years, strengthened by shared experiences, cultural pride, and the comfort of knowing they could always rely on one another. “Melat is like the sister I never had,” Mekdes says, smiling.

Holding on to Heritage Living in America while staying true to their Ethiopian heritage has been a delicate balancing act for both Melat and Mekdes. Melat’s family was determined to keep Ethiopian traditions alive in their household. “We only spoke Tigrigna and Amharic at home, ate Ethiopian food, and watched Ethiopian TV,” she explains. “It felt like we were living in Ethiopia, but in a different environment.”

Illinois Tech: A New Chapter Both Melat and Mekdes chose Illinois Tech because of its strong academic programs and peaceful, nature-filled campus.

Melat initially enrolled in the architecture program, however, during her time in the program, she realized her true passion lay in business so she decided to switch to the Stuart School of Business, a move that aligned more closely with her growing interest in business. “I found myself more excited about understanding how businesses work and creating new opportunities,” Melat shares.

Her journey took an even more exciting turn after taking an IPRO class, which introduced her to the world of innovation and entrepreneurship. This experience sparked her decision to pursue an accelerated Master of Technological Entrepreneurship program. The dual-degree opportunity allows her to complete both her undergraduate and graduate degrees within five years, “It’s such a unique chance to explore my passion for entrepreneurship while making the most of my time here,” Melat says enthusiastically.

In addition to her academic pursuits, Melat is deeply involved on campus. Melat works on campus in the graduate admissions office as a graduate student ambassador. Her leadership roles extend to student organizations as well. She is actively involved in the African Student Organizations where she serves as the treasurer. She is also the current President of the Illinois Tech Creative Club and Co-Host of Afro Vibez Radio show on campus radio WIIT. Mekdes, who followed Melat to Illinois Tech a year later, felt an immediate sense of belonging on campus. “The quiet atmosphere and the chance to study surrounded by nature drew me in,” she explains. Like Melat, Mekdes works as a Student Ambassador, assisting with campus tours and supporting prospective students. She is also an active member of the African Student Union, where she connects with peers who share her cultural background.

At Illinois Tech, the women have found not only academic growth but also opportunities to connect with other African students. “There’s something special about meeting people from Africa. It’s like finding a piece of home away from home,” Melat reflects.

“Graduating will be a huge accomplishment, not just for me but for my entire family,” Melat says.

Mekdes, still charting her path, feels optimistic about the future. “I don’t have everything figured out yet, but that’s okay,” she admits. “I just want to keep growing, exploring, and seeing where life takes me.”

Roots in Nature

A Journey Through Academia

I grew up in Chesterfield, Michigan, a little town near Lake Saint Clair. My neighborhood was small and full of kids my age. I had the best time running around with them. I was always outgoing and loved anything creative: reading, drawing, writing stories, crafting potions (yes, I was that kid), and spending time with animals.

Sports were my world, gymnastics, swimming, soccer, softball, volleyball, you name it, I tried it.

When I got the Camras scholarship to Illinois Tech, I was in disbelief. I cried, honestly. I didn’t think I’d done well enough in the group interview, but that scholarship changed my life. I started studying architecture but soon found myself drawn to civil engineering and then environmental engineering. It all clicked when I realized I wanted to focus on sustainable design. Now, I’m pursuing my master’s in Sustainability, Analytics, and Management at the Stuart School of Business.

Nature was a big part of my childhood, thanks to family camping trips and vacations to Florida. We’d travel with our neighbors in this huge van two families, golden retrievers, and all. Those trips were wild adventures where I saw sharks, stingrays, and iguanas.

Looking back, I realize how much those moments shaped me and made me fall in love with the beauty of nature.

Facing the Unexpected When I was ten, life threw me a curveball. I was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA), a condition I had never even heard of before. Suddenly, my world was full of doctor visits, weekly shots, daily pills, and monthly blood tests. I was put on methotrexate, a drug usually used for chemotherapy, and it was rough nausea, irritability, vomiting you name it.

One of the projects I’m most proud of is the composting system I’ve been working on for campus. It’s a small step, but it feels good to give back to Mother Earth.

Everyday Mindfulness Every morning, I take time to check in with myself. I ask my heart how it feels, stretch out any tension, and thank my body for all it does for me. I try to live with gratitude because every breath we take is a miracle. I also stay mindful of how my actions impact the planet. I use reusable bags, pick up litter, and try to honor the Earth in small ways every day. It’s not about being perfect it’s about doing what I can and being intentional about it.

For a while, I went into remission, but the symptoms eventually came back, worsened by how much I pushed my body during sports seasons. As I got older, I realized I had to take control of my

When I go to the park, take off my shoes, and just be, I can feel the earth working its magic on me. The inflammation eases, and I feel this deep connection to something bigger.

Through Pain. It’s my little corner of the internet where I share what I’ve learned about healing, wellness, and spirituality. Writing about my journey with depression and anxiety has been such a release.

It’s also helped me realize how much our personal health connects with the health of the planet.

I truly believe that how we treat ourselves mirrors how we treat nature. Our bones are like mountains, our breath is like the wind, our blood is like rivers, and our spirit is the fire within us. This belief has guided me in everything I do.

This journey has taught me so much about resilience, connection, and the importance of balance. I’ve learned that healing isn’t just about the body. It’s about the soul and the world around us.

This Future It’s strange, this future thing.

There was a period of my life where I was barely holding on, barely making it through the day without causing an argument that would later turn into tears and apologies… on repeat.

I let the past get to my head, and it never wanted to leave.

How could I think about the future?

I blamed it all on my diagnoses, thinking I was the only one it affected.

I only thought about how messed up I was the fights, the anger, the sickness, and the imperfections.

Where was the love?

I was mad at the world.

I was mad that all that rage lived inside my little body.

I was mad that I hurt the people who loved me that I was letting them down.

Why did this happen to me?

Messing up became a routine; I was losing hope, day in and day out.

I wanted to help myself, but it was easier to blame the meds.

I mean they're the ones who caused this mess, right?

It was like I was stranded in an ocean.

Lost. Scared. Alone.

Everything inside of me wanted to give up.

I didn’t paddle and I didn’t kick, I just floated there.

Surrendering to whatever the Universe had in store for me, hoping I’d get taken under by a wave.

But the Universe had other plans.

It whispered, “You are here for a reason.

This isn’t your time.”

I didn’t understand, but somehow, I believed.

I was 11 years old.

I started to paddle and kick, even though it felt useless.

Waves crashed down on me over and over again It was exhausting And man, was I tired— tired of hating myself for what I did.

That wasn’t who I was.

You are told that it is not that serious, but you know whoever says that is delirious.

You have every right to feel the way you do As your disease only affects few.

You are brave for drowning out the voices in your head.

You are not a monster.

And you will never be better off dead.

I was a girl trying to make it out of the massive ocean, out of her messed-up mind.

I just wanted to be normal, for the journey to end.

I was doing the best I could with what I knew then, but if I could tell my younger self what I know now, I would say: Sweet child, I know your head is heavy, and you feel like you could collapse.

But you are more than enough, even if there’s a relapse.

You don’t deserve to go through this pain, You’re just a little girl, trying to stay sane.

Every day feels like a battle that can’t be won, But your ancestors knew that you’d be the only one, Able to trudge these waters alone, still hearing their call And for that, they have truly prioritized you above all.

The words and thoughts you can't control, don’t erase the fact that you are a beautiful, old soul You are so strong for what you’ve been through, Now wipe your tears, be who were meant to be, Do what you were meant to do.

It’s amazing how far I’ve come.

I’m learning and growing, but this future thing is still weird.

I’m in college now, and this is more future than I’d ever thought I’d see. There’s so much to explore Now, I can finally say that I’ve made it to shore.

You are not a monster for the words you can’t control.

You are releasing the sadness built up, and that has taken a toll… on your mind, body, and heart, while you are holding on by a thread, trying not to fall apart.

You are grieving who you were before the disease and I know for a fact, that is not done with ease.

Especially at your age, it is silly to think that you wouldn’t have rage.

Starting from Ghana Ghanaian-born Elizabeth Kuukua Amoako’s life at Illinois Tech began with her desire to blend her professional background in banking with technical analytics. Now completing her MBA in Business Analytics at the Stuart School of Business, she aspires to help businesses thrive by looking at raw data and gleaning solutions from it. Not only will she have the know-how under her belt, but also the learned people skills through her 5 years of customer service and relationship management experience.

Elizabeth describes her upbringing and life in Ghana as foundational to who she is as a person. “Growing up in Ghana was a rich experience, filled with a strong sense of community and tradition. It taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of building relationships.” She also credits her home country with teaching her the value of hard work and giving back to the community, and is able to reconnect to a piece of home by cooking the Ghanaian dishes she craves such as waakye and kelewele.

Embracing the City of Chicago Coming together with the Ghanaian community both on campus and in Chicago is vital to Elizabeth; a welcome embrace of home, a way to gather and connect with fellow Ghanaians. “The customs, like the colorful festivals and traditional marriage ceremonies, remind me of the beauty of my heritage and the joy of celebrating life together.” Hospitality, respect, and community are three values she holds close while being away from home.Over time, I’ve come to appreciate the opportunities here and the resilience of its people, especially during challenging times,” is how Elizabeth describes her impression of the city of Chicago. She stays open to new opportunities and learns from others when it comes to navigating cultural differences, and says that building friendships has helped her bridge that gap.

Elizabeth’s story from the vibrant traditions of Ghana to the dynamic opportunities at Illinois Tech is a source of inspiration for fellow and prospective students alike. As she continues to blend data-driven insights with ethical leadership, Elizabeth proves that success is not just about what you achieve it’s about the impact you leave behind.

Academic Excellence & Ethical Analytics As for her academic journey, Elizabeth deems Illinois Tech’s Business Analytics program a route to allow her to be able to approach problems strategically and find solutions to real-world issues. She credits her Quantitative Marketing Models class as being especially impactful, giving her the opportunity to think critically about her field, in relation to marketing strategies and business growth. Currently, she finds herself developing skills in data visualization, predictive modeling, and statistical analysis, to name a few. As for her future, Elizabeth hopes to build a path towards consulting or financial analytics, with an emphasis on using data to drive ethical and impactful decisions.

A Life of Balance and Impact During her down time, alongside watching movies and traveling, she volunteers at her church, the St. James Catholic Food Pantry in Chicago, where she has found her small gestures meaningful and rewarding. She is also involved in the Toastmasters International’s Leading Ladies Club, and as a Student Ambassador at the Stuart School of Business - not to mention vying for the position of treasurer at the Creative Club. When away from campus, she explores the city by visiting different parks, trying out different cuisines, and attending cultural events. The downtown scene is also a backdrop she loves to study in.

Advice for Fellow International Students Advice Elizabeth gives to international students such as herself?

Don’t be afraid to ask for help, make connections, and be open to new experiences. She has found the most reward in her encounters with inspiring professors and peers who challenge her to grow, and aid her in achieving each milestone. An epitome of ambition, passion, and strong sense of self, Elizabeth Kuukua Amoako is unstoppable and an aspiration to fellow and prospective students at Illinois Tech.

As a Black woman in tech, Kaya’s upbringing and experiences shaped her leadership style. “Growing up, I met people from all walks of life, which gave me an appreciation for diversity and resilience,” she shares. “I’ve seen supported communities and

neglected ones, and that shaped my drive to create inclusive spaces in everything I do.”

As President of the Black Student Athlete Association (BSAA) at Illinois Tech, Kaya has been instrumental in building a community of Black student-athletes. “It’s small but impactful,” she says. “Representation matters, and seeing someone in a leadership role who looks like you can be incredibly inspiring.”

Now, as a senior in the program, Kaya values collaboration above all else. “I’ve learned that having a motivated group behind you not only makes the work more manageable but also a lot more fun.”

Building Bridges in Tech Kaya’s internships at NASA and AutoZone were transformative. At NASA, she applied machine learning and natural language processing to innovative projects. “It was my first exposure to these fields, and I learned so much on the job,” she says.

At AutoZone, she developed a shipment label application for the supply chain team. “The biggest challenge was understanding the team’s operations and aligning the application with their goals. It taught me to always start by understanding the problem deeply,” she reflects.

Founding Mosaic As co-founder of Mosaic, Kaya is tackling one of today’s most pressing challenges in the job market, authenticity in hiring.

“Mosaic was born from our realization that the hiring process is becoming increasingly impersonal and riddled with dishonest practices,” she explains. Mosaic leverages AI and tech solutions to help companies identify genuine talent while avoiding the pitfalls of resume padding and algorithm manipulation.

Kaya’s journey with Mosaic reached a milestone during the Kaplan Institute’s Pitch Competition, an experience that allowed her to test her ideas in a dynamic and high-pressure environment. “Kaplan was a game-changer,” she says. “The competition pushed me to articulate our vision clearly and effectively, while also challenging us to refine our approach.”

Being part of Kaplan’s entrepreneurial ecosystem has given Kaya access to resources, mentorship, and opportunities to collaborate with like-minded innovators. “Kaplan is where ideas go to grow. It’s not just about pitching, it’s about refining and scaling your vision alongside peers and mentors who truly

Empowering the Next Generation Kaya is passionate about giving back, particularly through initiatives like STEAM & Dream Liberation Labs. “We create curriculums that introduce Black and Brown middle schoolers to technology,” she shares. “At this point in my life, I’ve been given so many opportunities, it’s only right to support and inspire others to get into tech.”

Looking Ahead With graduation on the horizon, Kaya is excited for the next chapter. “It’s been four years of hard work, and I’m ready to take on new challenges,” she says. Her vision for the future includes making AI more accessible and addressing its limitations, such as hallucinations in large language models.

Whether she’s in a tech lab, a leadership role, or mentoring the next generation, Kaya’s journey exemplifies the power of resilience, collaboration, and vision. As she puts it, “If it’s not fun or meaningful, I wouldn’t be doing it. That’s how I balance it all.”

Dhruv’s Genesis

A Catalyst for Creativity

Dhruv Singh’s journey to the Illinois Institute of Technology is one fueled by a unique blend of logic and creativity. Currently pursuing a master’s in computer science and set to graduate in May 2024, Dhruv views his academic field not just as a study of algorithms but as a canvas for artistic expression.

Chicago’s dynamic cultural and architectural landscape has amplified Dhruv’s creative endeavors. He is drawn to the city’s vibrant jazz scene, particularly the monthly speakeasies hosted by Illinois Tech. These intimate events not only fuel his love for music but also inspire his wardrobe, which has taken on vintage influences paired with modern twists.

“Illinois Tech appealed to me for its innovative academic environment, but it’s also given me space to explore who I am beyond academics,” he shares. His transition from India to Chicago marked a turning point, providing a culturally rich backdrop that has influenced his approach to music, fashion, and technology.

A Cultural Kaleidoscope Growing up in India exposed Dhruv to an inspiring blend of tradition and modernity. The vibrant textures and intricate patterns of Indian fashion ignited his appreciation for detail, a trait he carries into both his academic projects and personal style. Music, too, became a lifelong companion, shaped by a medley of Indian classical ragas, Bollywood rhythms, and international beats.

“The duality of tradition and innovation in India shaped my worldview. I see technology as a tool to build and innovate but also as something that should be used thoughtfully, with a creative touch,” he explains.

“Chicago encourages me to refine my style and creative pursuits,” he reflects. “Whether cycling along the Lakefront Trail or attending live music events, the city constantly feeds my imagination.”

From playing guitar and keyboard to experimenting with vocals, his creative process mirrors the flow of coding. “There’s a parallel between music and coding, both involve layers of experimentation until you achieve harmony,” he notes.

His fashion choices, meanwhile, serve as a powerful form of self-expression. Dhruv gravitates toward timeless pieces that tell a story, often incorporating elements inspired by his Indian heritage. “Fashion is storytelling,” he says, “just like in music and technology, it’s about creating something meaningful.”

Diverse Paths to Illinois Tech Bedi from Kenya and Yuto from Japan, two international students at Illinois Tech, have built an extraordinary friendship that bridges continents, cultures, and ambitions. Their journey began on the first day of their freshman year, when they met during move-in, welcomed by the warm spirit of Kaycek Cunningham and the inclusive campus culture.

For Bedi, the decision to attend Illinois Tech was a blend of spontaneity and opportunity. “I applied to ten schools, got into nine, and chose Illinois Tech because of the scholarships and the city life,” he shares. Starting as a computer science major, he soon discovered his passion for marketing analytics. “I wanted to learn about social media and how to make campaigns go viral,” Bedi says.

Yuto’s path was more deliberate. Recommended by his advisor in Japan, he sought out Illinois Tech for its diversity and welcoming academic environment.

“I wanted a place where I could meet people from all over the world and gain new perspectives,” he explains.

A Smooth Transition Both students found the application process to be straightforward.

Bedi utilized an agent, while Yuto appreciated the ease of the experience. They quickly settled into their new lives on campus, though they did have a few challenges, such as adjusting to the loud sounds from their sixth-floor dorm.

Bedi and Yuto both found community in the Triangle Fraternity, where diversity and camaraderie are celebrated. “It’s not just about parties,” Bedi says. “It’s about professional development, fundraising, and brotherhood.” The fraternity has given them a support system, making their campus life even more memorable.

Passion for Technology and Marketing Bedi's ambition is to make a name for himself in the world of marketing, with a goal of gaining 500,000 views on his social media content. “I want to create viral marketing campaigns and back my work with data mining,” he reveals. With 900,000 views on Instagram and partnerships with brands like BuckedUp and Raw Nutrition, he’s well on his way to achieving his goals. Yuto, on the other hand, has his sights set on graduate school. He’s particularly interested in emotional AI, a field that studies how artificial intelligence can understand and respond to human emotions. His experiences in web design and technology have laid a strong foundation for his future endeavors.

Life Beyond Academia Both students have embraced the social scene at IIT. Bedi joined the Triangle fraternity for its diversity and sense of community, while Yuto founded a soccer club that has brought together students from various backgrounds. They appreciate the calm and supportive environment IIT offers, allowing them to focus on their studies and personal growth.

Growing up in Kenya, Bedi enjoyed activities like hunting and boxing, and he briefly pursued modeling due to family connections. He also recalls his powerlifting success, having placed third in a Nairobi competition.

Yuto’s upbringing in Japan was marked by peaceful schooling, sports, and memorable trips to places like Disneyland. He cherishes the food, friends, and experiences he had in Tokyo, particularly the tranquility of his home country.

A Cultural Exchange Their friendship has sparked a desire to explore each other's cultures further. Yuto visited Kenya last summer, where he experienced the local hospitality and discovered the modern aspects of life in Africa. Bedi plans to travel to Japan next summer, eager to immerse himself in Yuto’s world.

A memorable experience for Yuto involved following a local to his village, where he spent hours with a family he met along the way. These cultural exchanges highlight the richness of their experiences and the importance of understanding global perspectives.

From Nigeria to Chicago Born in the bustling heart of Lagos, Nigeria, Ola's early life was marked by vibrant culture, delicious food, and a close-knit family.

As the youngest and only boy among his parents' children, he grew up under watchful eyes, experiencing both the struggles and joys of Nigerian life. His childhood was rich with cherished memories.

Sunday church visits followed by grand meals of Jollof rice at his grandmother's house.

However, after the age of five, a significant change occurred when his family moved to a better neighborhood due to financial improvements. This transition opened up new doors, allowing Ola to embrace the rich tapestry of Nigerian culture, community, and cuisine. Growing up, he was more of a homebody, indulging in hobbies like soccer, rock climbing, biking, and running.

A Bold Move Ola's decision to move to America was driven by a desire for better opportunities and a more dynamic lifestyle. The university system in Nigeria had its challenges, with public strikes making education unpredictable and private institutions being too costly. Inspired to pursue electrical engineering, he hoped to broaden his horizons and explore new avenues in both technology and creativity.

Chicago was a city he had visited multiple times before, each visit deepening his affection for its culture and public transportation system. His first winter in Chicago was a stark contrast to his previous experiences; the bitter cold and unexpected snowfall tested his resilience but also brought a sense of adventure.

Overcoming Isolation Upon starting at Illinois Tech in 2021, Ola faced the dual challenges of adapting to a new country and navigating a rigorous academic environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Isolated in his room and with his sister busy with her studies, he struggled initially but found solace in the African Student Organization (ASO), where he connected with fellow students and built a supportive community.

As a graduate student at Illinois Tech’s Institute of Design, Sai’s story is one of global experiences, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to humancentered design.

A Childhood of Contrasts Sai’s upbringing is a tapestry of unique experiences. Born in India, he spent his early years in Sri Lanka, where resilience and community were daily lessons. Later, he moved to Singapore, a city that thrives on innovation and multiculturalism, where he developed a keen sense of precision and future-forward thinking.

His time in a boarding school nestled in India’s serene hills taught him introspection and simplicity. Each chapter of his childhood cultivated a deep appreciation for cultural diversity and its influence on human connections.

Finding His Path in Design Sai’s higher academic journey began in Ohio, where he studied mechanical engineering, technical writing, and music composition.

This unique blend of disciplines sparked his interest in weaving technical rigor with storytelling and creativity. However, he felt something was missing a human-centered approach that could address real-world challenges. This longing led him to Illinois Tech’s Institute of Design, a school known for its legacy of blending systems thinking with practical innovation.

“My path to design was fueled by a relentless curiosity,” Sai reflects. “I wanted to merge creativity with logic to address challenges in ways that resonate with people.”

A Global Perspective on Design Sai’s travels have profoundly influenced his design philosophy.

From the disciplined precision of Singapore to the communitydriven resilience of Sri Lanka, each place has offered him a unique lens to view the world. “Traveling challenges my assumptions and helps me see the universal importance of connection,” Sai explains. His immersion trip to Italy particularly stands out, where the playful yet rigorous approach to design inspired him to embed joy and authenticity into his work.

Building a Vision at Illinois Tech At the Institute of Design, Sai has flourished. The interdisciplinary curriculum has honed his ability to tackle complex societal challenges with empathy and innovation.

Classes like Innovation Methods, Multidisciplinary Prototyping, and Principles and Methods of User Research have been transformative, allowing Sai to experiment with ideas that push boundaries while remaining rooted in purpose.

He recalls a particularly impactful project: designing a prototype for an expo to create equitable career pathways for the Latinx community. Collaborating with an NGO, his work secured state funding for implementation. “Balancing creativity with practicality was the biggest challenge,” Sai shares. “But seeing our ideas come to life in the real world made it all worthwhile.”

Beyond the Classroom Sai’s interests extend beyond design. He’s a musician, poet, and motion graphic artist, blending creativity and storytelling in his personal life. These passions infuse his professional projects with depth and imagination. As a winner of the prestigious Rotman Design Challenge, Sai’s ability to innovate shines through. His participation in the Stanford Longevity Challenge, where he explored AI’s potential for intergenerational knowledge transfer, further showcases his commitment to meaningful, human-centered solutions.

Avani, a graduate student at Illinois Tech’s Institute of Design, has always been captivated by the art of creating. Her journey began with undergraduate studies in industrial and product design in India, where she explored her love for sketching and illustrating.

Today, she continues her path as a designer with a purpose: to combine creativity with functionality to address social and environmental challenges.

At the Institute of Design, Avani immersed herself in impactful projects. One of her most significant endeavors was a collaboration with the City of Chicago to address food waste.

Through this project, she uncovered systemic issues and the critical need for aligning stakeholders.

A Journey Shaped by Dreams and Resilience For Natalia and Liliia, pursuing an LLM at Chicago-Kent Law School is more than an academic milestone. it’s a testament to their resilience, ambition, and dedication to justice. Both Ukrainian lawyers left behind careers, family, and a life they knew to embrace the unknown in the United States.

Liliia’s path was sparked by an email from a Ukrainian university offering enrollment in the School of American Law. “I’ve always been passionate about learning. When I completed the pre-LLM program, I had the chance to study in Chicago. It was a hard decision, quitting my job and leaving everything behind but the war gave me clarity. It reminded me that life is unpredictable, and waiting might mean missing the chance to fulfill my dreams,” she says.

Natalia’s journey was similarly fueled by a deep commitment to professional growth. “Studying business law in the U.S. was a longtime goal. The practical approach at Chicago-Kent and the resources here convinced me that this was the right place to elevate my career,” she shares.

Strength in Friendship FThough Natalia and Liliia first connected online while searching for housing, their bond deepened as roommates navigating life in a new city. “Having someone who understands your background and shares your culture makes everything easier,” Liliia says. “We’ve built a connection that’s grounded in mutual support, from studying together to finding comfort in shared traditions.”

Living together has also been a space for healing. “We talk about Ukrainian food, traditions, and memories. It’s a small way to keep home close, especially when we’re feeling homesick,” Natalia adds.

The Shadows of War Both women experienced the horrors of the war in Ukraine firsthand. “The first weeks were surreal. It was hard to believe that in the 21st century, such devastation could come to your home,” Liliia recalls. Over time, they adapted to a grim reality air raid sirens, bombings, and the constant uncertainty of survival.

In July 2023, Liliia’s apartment in Lviv was struck by a missile.

“Ten of my neighbors died, and my windows were shattered, but I was lucky this time,” she says. Moments like these reshaped their outlook on life. “You realize you can’t postpone living. The war made me determined to seize every opportunity.” Natalia echoes this sentiment. “The war revealed the fragility of stability and the importance of resilience. It strengthened my resolve to use law as a tool for justice and rebuilding.”

For both women, their time in Chicago is a stepping stone to making an impact back home.

Natalia plans to use her business law expertise to promote fair practices and entrepreneurship in Ukraine, while Liliia envisions contributing to the legal system through reforms and possibly becoming a judge.

“The war has shown us that freedom isn’t guaranteed. It’s something you must fight for every day,” Liliia reflects. “Our goal is to use what we’ve learned here to rebuild a stronger, fairer Ukraine.”

A City of Growth and Discovery Adjusting to life in Chicago came with challenges, but the city’s energy and diversity quickly became a source of inspiration. “At first, the distances and noise were overwhelming, but I’ve come to love the blend of vibrant neighborhoods and quiet corners,” Liliia shares.

Natalia highlights how the city has influenced her professional and personal growth. “Chicago is dynamic—it pushes you to think bigger and connect with people from all over the world. The diversity here has enriched my perspective in ways I never expected.”

Their favorite spots, from the Bloomingdale Trail to Illinois Tech’s Kaplan Institute, provide moments of solace amid the hustle of academic life.

An Academic Experience Beyond Expectations Studying at Chicago-Kent and Illinois Tech has been a transformative journey. For Liliia, courses like Legal Writing with Professor Contento and the entrepreneurship-focused IPRO class led by Professor Nik Rokop stand out. “These professors don’t just teach they inspire. Nik’s phrase, ‘Why should I dream small when I can dream big with the same energy?’ stays with me every day,” she says.

Natalia’s IPRO project won an award at Kaplan Innovation Day, an achievement that underscored the value of collaboration and practical learning. “Our project focused on bridging gaps in venture capital education, making it accessible to aspiring entrepreneurs.

Winning was meaningful, it showed the power of teamwork and innovation,” she says.
