Illinois Engineering Is Now The Grainger College Of Engineering Bill Bell – The Grainger College of Engineering

The University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign’s College of Engineering has become The Grainger College of Engineering, recognizing a new $100 million gift from The Grainger Foundation and more than $300 million in total support, after consultation with the Chancellor’s Joint Advisory Committee on Investment, Licensing, and Naming Rights and with approval by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees.

The Grainger Foundation’s total support represents the largest amount ever given to a public university to name a college of engineering, with more than $200 million provided in the last six years.

As part of the naming, The Grainger Foundation will provide the additional $100 million unrestricted gift to the college’s endowment, building upon its past, significant foundational support for even greater impact during the college and university’s ambitious With Illinois campaign and beyond.

“What an anniversary! One hundred years after William W. Grainger graduated from our college, his impact is still felt. We are forever grateful,” Rashid Bashir, dean of The Grainger College of Engineering, said.

The college has been named in recognition of the contributions of The Grainger Foundation to the excellence of the college and in honor of distinguished alumnus William W. Grainger.

“Very few colleges have seen this kind of long-term, flexible support. We are proud to be one of them, and it will allow our research enterprise and educational programs to flourish. It will also allow us to recruit, reward, and retain the very best faculty with more and larger faculty chairs and professorships.”

William W. Grainger graduated from the university’s electrical engineering program in 1919 and founded the industrial supply company W. W. Grainger, Inc. in 1927.

Grainger is an Illinois-based Fortune 500 company with more than 25,000 employees worldwide.

In addition, The Grainger Foundation is currently matching all gifts to the Engineering Visionary Scholarship Initiative for undergraduates—dollar-fordollar, up to $25 million. The Grainger Matching Challenge was established in 2017 and runs through the end of 2019.

In the 2018-2019 academic year, the Tenant Union and Campus and Community Student Services (CCSS) merged to form Off-Campus Community Living, occl.illinois.edu.

This new unit within the Office of the Dean of Students strives to support students residing in privately owned homes and apartments. Over 20,000 students choose to live independently in non-university owned or certified housing. Whether the student is staying in the campus district or in the surrounding Champaign-Urbana community, they are considered to live “off-campus.”

Off-Campus Community Living supports students residing off campus with the information and resources they need to be engaged in the community and build constructive relationships with peers, landlords, and other community leaders. The services include: • Off-campus housing search • Tenant rights and lease education • Landlord grievance/complaint assistance • Connections to the Champaign- Urbana community • Safety education and programming • Presentations and workshops

The two most common reasons that students visit Off-Campus Community Living is to have their lease reviewed before they sign, or to seek guidance on a landlord grievance or complaint.

Unfortunately, a common issue students experience is the loss or damage of their personal items.

Landlords are not responsible for losses that are not their fault.

For their protection, students need their to have renter’s insurance to cover personal losses.

The Off-Campus Community Living website has many tools to support students including the Housing Explorer, the Quick Guide to Renting Apartments, budget sheets, roommate agreements, and informational brochures on issues such as renter’s insurance, occl.illinois. edu/pdfs/renters_insurance.pdf. Leveraging Summer Break: Plan Summer Activities With College Students They’ve passed their final exams, cleared out their dorm room, and packed up the car. After a long, hard year at college, your son or daughter has returned to spend the summer break at home.

At this point, you may find yourself wondering “what now?” With a bit of planning, you can help your college student leverage his or her time away from school to their economic, academic and physical advantage.

Economic – summer jobs and financial planning Summer break is a great time for your college student to earn money to contribute towards tuition, books, and living expenses. Helping your student become increasingly financially independent is not only helpful to them; it can also help soften the blow college expenses can wreak on the family budget.

Scout local businesses in advance to determine who is hiring, but be sure to avoid the temptation to intervene directly on your student’s behalf.

Before summer draws to a close, consider helping your student plan a budget for the next semester.

Academic – summer courses, test preparation, and syllabi review Research the course offerings of local community colleges. Many offer core coursework for which your student can receive transfer credit when they return to school. Taking even one course each summer can mean a lighter academic and financial load during senior year.

Get Involved!

If your sophomore, junior or senior college student is planning to apply to graduate school, consider arranging to enroll them in an appropriate test preparation program. Thorough preparation for these examinations is vital. Books, online courses, and live tutoring are all options to consider.

For an easier transition back to school, your student may want to pick up copies of the syllabi and textbooks for the courses they are planning to take in the fall. Using summer break to complete some of the required reading for fall coursework will help decrease the workload that will face them upon return.

Physical – medical and dental appointments, diet and exercise If your student is like many students, they may have neglected routine, preventive health care. After discussing it with your student, offer to set up appointments with their local doctor and or dentist.

Did your student gain the proverbial “freshman (or sophomore, junior or senior) 15”? Weight gain at college is very common. Offer your student nutritious, home-cooked meals if possible. Suggest going on walks and becoming active together. Not only will your student feel better when they become more active over summer break, but it can also be a wonderful way of renewing the bond with your student.

With some planning and parental encouragement, you can help your college student leverage then summer break time to substantial economic, academic, and physical advantages.

The Moms and Dads Associations are two separate, non-profit entities that strive to serve all students at the University of Illinois.

There are many ways to get involved with the Associations. The Associations rely on volunteers for the success of their programs.

Some volunteer opportunities include Summer Registration, Moms Weekend, Dads Weekend, and Admitted Student Days.

Sean C. Garrick, associate vice provost in the Office for Equity and Diversity at the University of Minnesota, will become the vice chancellor for diversity, equity and inclusion at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign effective Aug. 1, pending approval by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees. Garrick will be the first person to hold this new seniorlevel position at Illinois.

During a national recruitment process, Garrick showed potential to identify and pursue opportunities for education, reconciliation, restoration and cultural transformation at Illinois. In addition to leading the newly established Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Garrick will also serve on the chancellor’s leadership team, providing vision and advice on diversity and social justice issues.

“When I began as chancellor at Illinois, I said that I believed hiring a vice chancellor for diversity, equity and

inclusion was critical to our success,” Chancellor Robert J. Jones said. “Dr. Garrick has the passion, experience and leadership necessary to integrate our robust and numerous diversity and inclusion efforts into innovative strategies and practices that enhance these efforts and embed them into every aspect of our missions.”

At Minnesota, Garrick lead initiatives designed to recruit, retain and sustain a diverse community of scholars. In addition to serving as associate vice provost, he was the director of the University of Minnesota Institute for Diversity, Equity and Advocacy, where he lead efforts to engage faculty whose scholarship focuses on diverse, underrepresented or marginalized populations.

Garrick is an accomplished scholar, and a professor of mechanical engineering with a research focus in chemically reacting flows, particle formation and growth, and turbulent multiphase flows.

Make the most of your visits to campus Tara Sohns – PFPO Student Staff As part of the Illini family, many parents and siblings often enjoy revisiting favorite campus restaurants and shops when visiting the university.

But if time allows, you may wish to expand your experiences by venturing off the beaten campus path to discover some of the newer, or more traditional dining and entertainment venues in Champaign and Urbana.

Champaign Food Venues Exploring downtown Champaign, visitors will find ample parking and easy-to-navigate areas featuring several popular venues such as Cream & Flutter bakery, Café Kopi coffee shop, Black Dog BBQ, and Farren’s hamburgers and steaks.

Other Champaign “hidden gems” include: Hopscotch Bakery; Jarling’s Custard Cup (located close to Memorial Stadium), featuring a wide range of homemade ice cream treats; and Pandamonium Donuts, specializing in gourmet donuts.

Champaign Entertainment For family entertainment, Parkland College’s William M. Staerkel Planetarium provides an engaging tour, featuring a 50-foot diameter dome for star gazing and sky watching. Visit the planetarium’s website for a full list of Fall 2019 events.

Champaign Theater Performances The Parkland College Theatre will present two productions this fall: Elephant’s Graveyard and Peter and the Starcatcher. Additionally, The Virginia Theatre in downtown Champaign will host a series of performances ranging from movies, musicals, comedy shows, and ballet. On October 18, Kansas will

be performing, and on December 11, The Virginia will host A Magical Cirque Christmas.

Cultural Houses and Performance Art For families newer to the UrbanaChampaign area, or who prefer to remain on campus during their stay, there are several restaurants and cultural houses to discover and explore.

Among the many cultural houses to visit on campus, the Japan House is a popular location where you can enjoy Japanese gardens and nature walks, or participate in one of the many tea ceremonies open to the public. Fall semester events include moonviewing in September and open house events in October and November.

For more family friendly entertainment on campus, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts (KCPA) hosts a wide range of local and national performances. Fall events include Ellnora Last Call! in September, and The Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra Diamond Jubilee: 60thAnniversary Season debut in October.

Urbana Food Venues Urbana restaurants recommended by students and locals alike include: The Bread Company, next to KCPA, which provides homemade sandwiches, fresh baked treats, hot pasta dishes, and late night fondue specials. For a more casual setting and a quick bite to eat within the same KCPA block, Manolos is known for their pizza slices and empanadas. Finally, Basil Thai is within minutes, and offers satisfying curries and stir-fry entrées.

Patrick Wade – Communications Director, University of Illinois Police Department The University of Illinois Police Department introduced a number of new resources for students and parents during the 2018-2019 school year.

Public safety officials are looking forward to continuing to make safety improvements in the coming semesters.

Parents and family members now have an easy way to stay informed during campus emergencies. This spring, the university launched an Illini-Alert text message service for anyone who is not directly affiliated with campus.

No matter where you are, you can now receive Illini-Alert emergency text messages by texting “IlliniAlert” to 226787.

emergencies that present an imminent threat to the health or safety of campus community members. Previously, students and university employees were afforded the opportunity to sign up to receive emergency text messages by using their campus login. Now, anyone can sign up to receive alerts whether you have a campus login or not.

Everyone with a campus email address receives Illini-Alert via email, but public safety officials will continue to encourage students to sign up to receive text message alerts. They can do so by providing a cellphone number at emergency.illinois.edu.

Another new resource launched by the police department, the Community Police Academy, is an opportunity for students to participate in conversations about police operations, investigations, crime prevention and specialized units like K-9, bomb squad and SWAT. The goal of the Community Police

Academy is to engage students and others in dialogue about how the police department operates and to learn more about what students need to look out for themselves and others.

“This is about building bridges and forming relationships around our common goal of keeping everyone safe,” said Executive Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police Craig Stone.

Students can learn more about the academy or sign up at go.illinois.edu/ CommPoliceAcademy. The academy is free and occurs over the course of four weeks every spring and fall.

Additionally, the campus security camera network continues to grow.

The number of security cameras on campus is approaching 2,000. The cameras have been very helpful in deterring crime and helping police to identify and arrest offenders when crime does occur.

Dads Weekend 2019

Illini Union Parent and Family Programs Office The University of Illinois’ annual Dads Weekend is co-hosted by the Illini Union Parent and Family Programs Office and the Dads Association every fall. Dads Weekend includes a wide variety of events to appeal to every family member’s interests. This year’s main events include:

Further information will be added when confirmed. Dads Association event tickets are available on a first-come, first served basis, and all events usually sell out. Please note that all attendees at events, regardless of age, must have a ticket to enter, including Illinois students and all children. Students with their own season or individual football tickets will need to purchase a new ticket if they wish to be seated in the Dads Association section.

Tickets are on sale now. You can purchase tickets and find more information about Dads Weekend at www.illinidads.com. On the website, you and your student can learn more about scholarships, grants, and King Dad. There are up to six $2,000 scholarships awarded, up to six $500-$2,000 grants awarded, and one dad will be crowned King Dad at the Illini vs Rutgers football game.

Moms Association Awards Illini Union Parent and Family Programs Office The Moms Association at the University of Illinois selected Tiffany Barnett White, the University of Illinois Women’s Glee Club, and Sara Araghi as the recipients of three prestigious awards, which were awarded during Moms Weekend 2019 on Saturday, April 6, at the Moms Association Annual Board Meeting and Awards Ceremony.

Moms Association 2019 Medallion of Honor Tiffany Barnett White Created in 1966, the Medallion of Honor is granted to women who are either members or former members of the University of Illinois community.

Recipients of this award utilize their talents to enrich the lives of others.

Tiffany Barnett White was awarded the Moms Association 2019 Medallion of Honor for research in the effective and behavioral aspects of relationships between consumers and brands, specifically emphasizing the drivers and outcomes of both trust and distrust from consumers.

Professor White is an Associate Professor for Business Administration and Advertising at the Gies College of Business. Additionally, she is a Bruce and Anne Strohm Faculty Fellow at Gies. Professor White completed her BS and MS degrees at the University of Illinois in Advertising. Following her career at the University of Illinois, she received her Ph.D. in Marketing at Duke University.

Her research has been presented internationally and her research on the “Brand Connected Consumer” has been featured in a TEDx presentation.

Beyond her internationally recognized

research, Professor White has been recognized in a multitude of ways by both the university and the university’s students. Consistently, she is featured on the University of Illinois List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent by Their Students. Her efforts stem far past research and teaching by serving as a Faculty Athletics Representative for the University of Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics and as the Secretary-Treasurer for the Society for Consumer Psychology, the AtLarge Director for the Association for Consumer Research, and as an ACR Co-Chair. Finally, Professor White is also a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Consumer Psychology, the Journal of Service Research, and the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science.

to lighter folk arrangements. Last fall, the Women’s Glee Club titled their concert as “Nevertheless, She Persisted” which promoted both equality and social justice. Both the singers and the audience members had found a sense of hope to overcome the hurt and hardship of discrimination through the performance.

Moms Association 2019 Illini Spirit Award The University of Illinois Women’s Glee Club Created in 2008, the Illini Spirit Award is given to women involved in a program or project that contributes to the safety, health, development, and achievement of other students.

The recipient is granted $2,000 to contribute to their program or project.

Sara Araghi was awarded the Moms Association 2019 Humanitarian Award for becoming the Illini Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Club’s (IBJJC) first female board member by becoming their Treasurer as a sophomore. She held the position of Treasurer for three semesters before serving as IBJJC’s President. Araghi is also a member of the Campus Recreation Advisory Committee.

The University of Illinois Women’s Glee Club was awarded the Moms Association 2019 Illini Spirit Award for being a loving, supporting community that empowers their members and promotes unity and acceptance between everyone. The choir has been established for over 100 years and has over 70 members.

Her contributions to the IBJJC include recruitment, rebranding, organization, competition, and funding efforts.

IBJJC as a club has won 13 medals throughout five regional competitions.

In addition to their prolific season, they promote charities through their TapOut Cancer Charity Tournament.

The Women’s Glee Club covers a wide variety of different musical genres, ranging from classic artworks
