I’m often asked what makes TIGS different. I usually respond by detailing the impressive academic results and the outstanding outcomes for our students in their tertiary studies and careers. There are also: the beautiful campus and the wonderful resources, the outstanding academic qualifications of the staff, the co-curricular and sporting opportunities, the global perspective of the IB, the range and diversity of elective subjects in the Senior School. All of these are demonstrable, tangible and concrete.

But what really makes TIGS different is something much more fundamental. It lies at the heart and core of the school and is enunciated in our Core Values: Academic, Christian and Caring.

All schools say they are academic. It is clearly a school’s core business but the TIGS difference is that we uniquely express and articulate the concept into a clear expression of individual academic excellence – students aspiring to and achieving the best that they can be – that is the TIGS difference.

Our Christian foundation in the love of Jesus Christ for us all, is at the centre and the heart of everything that we do. It is what clearly defines us as a school and acts as the core, nucleus and essential force that holds everything together and has held it together since the school’s beginnings in 1959, through the transition to coeducation in 1975 up until today and it will be the force that will nurture and sustain TIGS into the future. That is the TIGS difference.

The love at the core of our school is an aspirational love which drives our community and the caring nature of that community. When you become a member of the TIGS community you share with other parents, alumni, staff and students in a partnership of shared values which then extends to others in the Illawarra community and beyond. And that too is the TIGS difference.

Over the last few weeks I have been speaking about the TIGS difference to staff and students using the symbol of a heart, a chocolate heart wrapped in blue foil to represent the school colours.

They each received this as a gift and a tangible expression of that love which binds us all together.

It is a thank you for the great heart that this community shows for others, for the enthusiasm they have shown for their work and the contribution they have made. It is a reminder of the enduring love that underpins this school, the love of Christ.

It also reflects the love of parents for their children and the efforts that parents make to send their children to this school, the love of teachers for their students and for teaching, of ex-students for their school and of students for each other, for their learning and the community.

And it is a reminder and encouragement to us all to continue to give our very best, our heart and soul in the year to come so that we embody, personify and continue the TIGS tradition.

Chaplain’s Message A WELCOME RETURN

As a regular speaker to our students in chapel I always try my very best to engage our students with the word of God and make it relevant and meaningful to their lives. Sometimes I feel I succeed and at other times I feel I miss the mark. Such is life!

Some of the most powerful chapel experiences we have had in the Senior School have been those occasions we have been addressed by former students of TIGS. We had one such occasion last week which had an enormous impact upon our students.

Semaema Cornford graduated from TIGS ten years ago. She spent her School Years 10-12 at TIGS. Semaema was born in Fiji and came to Australia in her teens as a result of being adopted by an Australian family. This was not Semaema’s first adoptive family, but it was by far her happiest.

Semaema has an extraordinary gift for music. She spoke fondly of how her TIGS experience affirmed her gifting and gave her scope to explore the limits of that gifting. She is immensely grateful for her time at TIGS. But things were not always easy for Semaema. Her experience of being adopted had its challenges. Semaema also contracted lupus which had devastating effects on her health. It was in speaking about these challenges and testifying to how God supported her in her troubles that Semaema’s message had it greatest impact on our students.

There were two scriptures that spoke especially into Semaema’s difficulties. The first had to do with her identity as someone precious to God. She read in Psalm 139 how God had knit her together in the womb and that she was fearfully and wonderfully made. This helped Semaema see that while she might not have had the best of family upbringings she was still precious to God. This made all the difference to her sense of self. She felt valued, even treasured by God. The second scripture was from Jeremiah 29.11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

God kindly spoke these words into Semaema’s life on a number of different occasions at a time when, because of her disease, she was beginning to wonder whether she had any sort of future let alone a blessed one. The effect of these verses enabled Semaema to look beyond the despair of her situation to the promise of a future God held out to her. This renewed hope led to the gift of a kidney transplant and improved health for Semaema.

Semaema’s story is not yet over. Even so, she has a determination to go with God wherever he calls. He has not let her down in the past and she sees no reason why he should let her down in the future. It is a great perspective.

Senior School PROMOTING A CULTURE AGAINST BULLYING

Greg Lanyon Acting Head of Senior School In this space last Term, Mrs. Watt wrote about the emerging “Student Voice” at the School, which is evolving partly as a result of the implementation of the IB programme and partly from an engaged Student Representative Council, led by the School Captains.

The SRC meets weekly to discuss issues of concern raised by the student body and works towards addressing concerns and solving problems in order to enhance the school experience for all students. They report to the student body at least once per term on the progress that they have made. For example, last year the SRC proposed and implemented a system by which students would be able to appeal the awarding of badges for co-curricular activities.

This Term, one of the tasks of the SRC is to evaluate the School’s draft Anti-Bullying and Harassment Policy and Plans. All of the best research in this area points towards a wholeschool approach and emphasises the importance of incorporating student input into the development of policies that directly affect them.

That way there will be much better buy-in once the policy is in place. The SRC will provide input and feedback about strategies the School might adopt in building a culture of antibullying. This of course now extends to strategies related to cyber-bullying and harassment online. As a starting point for this discussion it is really important for everyone to understand what bullying is and what it isn’t.

In the School’s draft policy, the definition used to describe bullying behavior is “repeated verbal, physical, social or psychological behaviour that is harmful and involves the misuse of power by an individual or group towards one or more persons.”

Cyberbullying refers to bullying behaviours using information and communication technologies. There are also some behaviours, which, although they might be unpleasant or distressing, are not bullying. These include mutual conflict or single episodes of nastiness, aggression or social rejection. More details of the types of behaviours that might

IMPROVING THE PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEW – THREE-WAY CONFERENCES

Judi Nealy Head of Junior School This year we are making a change to our Parent/Teacher interview structure and implementing three-way conferences. Three-way conferences provide students, their parents/carers and teachers with an opportunity to engage in constructive conversation about learning.

Three-way conferences support our work with students around personal learning – they enable students to manage and assess their own learning. The conferences are also an opportunity for teachers to provide feedback to students and parents on progress at school and for parents to provide feedback and raise questions or concerns with teachers.

Benefits of three-way conferences:

Allows for shared responsibility of student learning, assessment and reporting.

Three-way conferences are different to traditional parent teacher interviews in the following ways:

Flows naturally from some of the work produced in class.

•

Students are present for most of the meeting.

•

•

Students discuss with their parents and teachers their learning, the progress they have made and the areas that they need to continue to develop.

Strengthens communication channels with parents about student learning and progress.

•

A brief 5 minute session without students is included in the meeting.

•

Specialist teachers will notify parents if they feel that a conference is required in their subject area or parents can request a conference with a specialist teacher.

Why have we decided to make this change?

Three-way conferences, in which students present their learning to their teacher and parents, are an opportunity for children to formally reflect on the learning that has taken place over a period of time. This reflection occurs as

Provides evidence to support the written reports.

Gives parents an opportunity to affirm, encourage and support their child through constructive feedback.

As in the case of traditional Parent/ Teacher interviews, we advise that young siblings etc are not present for the sessions. The school will provide limited and quiet supervision for school aged children in Rees Hall during the three-way conference session, however it would be appreciated if at all possible you organise alternate care for younger children, or that you come suitably prepared to keep them occupied and calm so that you can concentrate on the information being shared.

Prior to the three-way conferences you will receive an email linking you to the booking facility. You will also be given notice on how to prepare for the conference so that you and the children get the maximum benefit from this experience.

Senior School Sport The Interschool Snow Sports Championships will be held in Perisher 1-4 July (during the school holidays).

Pine Surfing Academy Congratulations to our team of keen surfers who competed in the Pines Surf Academy Surfing Championships at the Farm on Tuesday 5 May 2015. All students surfed with honour and were fine ambassadors for our school both in and out of the waves. Special mention to the following team who came 4th; Finley McLaren, Riley Hanlon, Billy Fisher, Jai Tuckwood, Michaela McGrath and Grace Hennessy.

A special mention to Michaela McGrath and Grace Hennessy, who surfed across two teams throughout the course of the day to help Zac Winter, Ollie Birt, Andre De Ruyter and George Birt takepart in the championships.

Cross Country

The NASSA Cross Country has been changed to Monday 18 May and the AICES Cross Country has been changed to Thursday 4 June. Both events have been re-located to the Sydney International Equestrian Centre Saxony Road, Horsley Park.

CIS Swimming

Once again we had an extremely successful CIS Swimming Championships fielding a team of 15 brilliant swimmers across the two days of competition. Our 2015 team consisted of the following students: Sebastian Buchanan, Joshua Buchanan, Kelsey Cresswell, Ethan Dorrian, Alice Fox, Amy Gibbons, Laura Gibbons, Joshua King, Kyra King, Kaitlin McKeon, Georgia Robson, Madeline Laing, Daniel Laing, Jana Massingham and George Moustoukis.

Congratulations to Ethan Dorrian in Year 9 who swam in 11 events across the evening and placed 4th in the 16 Years Individual Medley and 200m Breastroke, 3rd in the 50m Butterfly, 2nd in the 200m Butterfly and 100m Butterfly and Joshua King who came 2nd in the 50m Butterfly and 4th in the 100m Butterfly.

TIGS Great Fete TRANSPORT INFORMATION

Dear Visitors Unfortunately there will be NO parking available on the School grounds on Fete day. However, to help relieve parking and traffic congestion, TIGS will once again be running a free shuttle bus service from 9.45am to 3.15pm that can both pick you and your family up and drop you back. Just be certain to park as close to either of the two routes below and flag down a TIGS bus as you see it come past.

Two TIGS buses will be continuously circling with an expected 15 – 20 minute space between services. Jump on board to enjoy another fantastic TIGS Great Fete.

PLEASE also take care that when parking you have left the appropriate space for driveways, keeping them clear at all times.
