TERM III 2015 Year 2 Structures

Headmaster

Congratulations to our Year 12 Dance students and to their teacher, Ms James, for their wonderful presentation at the HSC Dance Evening this week. This was their final performance before the visit of the HSC Examiners next week and we wish Holly Trenaman, Lauren Carberry, Claire Bonaccorso, India Davis and Clara Davidson every success. We have recently welcomed two visitors to our School and have greatly appreciated their comments. Dr Beth Green spoke at a seminar for TIGS staff and a number of staff from other Christian schools in our area. Dr Green is the Director of Cardus Education, Canada and her visit to Australia was in conjunction with the Anglican Education Commission (EdComm). Dr Green’s expertise is in research into the effectiveness of schools like TIGS that are committed to teaching within the framework of a Christian Worldview. One aspect of her research has identified that some Christian schools inadvertently deliver conflicting messages to students. “With the exception of Religious Education, Christian content was largely absent from the curriculum… this creates the impression (for students) that the Bible is only relevant to particular cultural spaces, and reinforces the view commonly expressed by pupils that it was not relevant outside of the private sphere”. http:// www.theosthinktank.co.uk/files/files/Reports/Mappingthefield.pdf (Page 49) It is disappointing to think that an education in a Christian school could inadvertently reinforce the idea that matters of Christian faith are separate from ‘mainstream subjects’ at school or everyday life experiences. I was reminded of the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Colossians which says quite unambiguously that Christ has relevance to the whole of life. “For by Him (Christ) all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things and in Him all things hold together.” (Col 1:16-17) This sentiment is captured in the first sentence of the TIGS Statement of Mission and Values: “The core business of the School is student learning within a framework provided by Christian faith.” At TIGS we allow students the freedom to form their own view in matters of faith. We also plan the curriculum so that in all learning, not just at Christian Studies or Chapel, matters of the Christian faith are considered in relevant and age-appropriate ways. Our intention is that a graduate from TIGS will have an understanding of the Christian faith and will have considered its relevance to them as they develop their own understanding of their relationship with God. This is not a surprising ambition for an Anglican School. We appreciated receiving Dr Green’s presentation and found it encouraging to know that the pathway we are on is supported by her research. TIGS is an accredited IB World School having undergone rigorous evaluation by the IBO to ensure we meet the high international standards required of an IB World School. TIGS is an authorised PYP School and is currently preparing for authorisation in the MYP and the Diploma (DP) in 2016. While IB Programmes are offered in many

schools in NSW, TIGS will then be only the second School in NSW to offer all three IB Programmes. There are several high profile schools in Sydney seeking our advice as they are on the same pathway as TIGS. Last week we welcomed Ms Kim Edwards, the International Baccalaureate MYP Consultant assigned to our school. Her visit is part of the MYP authorisation process and she was very complimentary about the enthusiasm and professionalism of our staff and the progress that has been made in preparing for MYP authorisation. Questions about the IB Diploma Programme have also been high on the agenda for parents of studnets in Years 6 to 9 at parent/teacher interviews and information nights. Our current Year 9 students will have made a choice between the DP and the HSC by this time next year. The students at TIGS will be in the fortunate position of being able to choose the course of study that best suits their needs. I remind students and parents that information about the DP has been placed on the School Website and it is worth revisiting on a regular basis as questions arise. Of particular interest is the comparison made between the DP and the HSC. http://www.tigs.nsw.edu.au/ senior-school/diploma-programme#dp-vs-hsc Parents wanting to understand the PYP, MYP and the DP should not hesitate to contact Mrs Wallace in the Junior School and Ms Sangster in the Senior School. Students in Year 8 and from next week Year 9 are also able to ask me questions about the DP using a forum available on OLLE. Stephen Kinsella Headmaster

Chaplain’s Message PARENT PERKS I heard a new term over the break: parent perks. Parent perks are those treats we enjoy because of who our parents are. I heard the term on the radio. Listeners were invited to call in and tell of treats they enjoyed growing up through their parents. One listener called to say that he watched every movie immediately upon its release as his parents owned a cinema. That’s a parent perk. Another called to say that he had the very best dental care as his father was a dentist. That’s a parent perk. It got me thinking about parent perks I might have enjoyed growing up. One stands out. I got my first job through my father. I walked straight into this place of employment solely because my father worked there. I think it would be safe to assume that the average TIGS students would have much to say when it comes to parents perks. It might not always be unique opportunities like living in a movie theatre. But I am sure that the average TIGS student could point to a loving family as a treasured parent perk. I know TIGS parents. I have seen your love and devotion. Perhaps I see it more than the students themselves see it. But as they grow and mature I am sure they will see it and look back with gratitude at the parent perks they enjoyed. All this got me thinking further still about the ultimate parent perk when our Father is the God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ. We have so many parent perks we can point to – adoption into God’s family, the gift of a multitude of brothers and sisters in Christ from every nation and tribe under heaven, the gift of God’s Spirit which takes up his residence in us, the gifts of the Spirit which enable us to bring blessing to others, the work of the Spirit in our lives which transforms us into the image of God’s Son Jesus, the gift of forgiveness in Jesus, the assurance that God will work all things for our good through Jesus, the promise that nothing will be able to snatch us from God’s embrace, the promise and certainty of eternal life… There really is no end when it comes to naming the parent perks of membership in the family of God. That’s why we delight to name him Father.

Senior School They value relationships: relationships with teachers, with their peers, with the current student leadership teams, with the community in their service activities both locally, within Australia and overseas. They value the many and diverse opportunities that they have been provided with, both within the curriculum and in co-curricular activities. And they have embraced these opportunities in unique and quite different ways. One student commented that because this wasn’t a narrowly defined school – either Selective, Performing Arts or Sport focused – then each student could choose and excel in a combination of areas and ways that was unique to them.

Monica Watt Head of Senior School Deputy Headmaster

This week and last the Headmaster, the Director of Pastoral Care and I have been involved in the delightful yet daunting task of interviewing a short list of Year 11 students for the position of School Captain and Vice Captain in the 2016 Year 12 Leadership Team. What an impressive group of students they are. They are a credit to their families, the School and to themselves. Their love of the School, of learning, of community service and their respect for each other have been the stand-outs. Each and every one of them could and would discharge the duties of Captain in an exemplary manner but as the Headmaster explains, we can only select four members for the Team and we are looking for a mix of skills and abilities. One of the questions we ask is “What do you value most about being a member of the School?” Their answer to this question reveals so much about the student’s perspective which often can be so different to a parent’s or teacher’s view. And what do they value?

They value the respect that is shown to others and to their differences. They value the School’s aspirational definition of academic excellence – each student aspiring to be the best that they can be – and many of them cite that they have been challenged and know that they have thus grown and developed in this ‘Academic, Christian and Caring’ environment. They value the Christian leadership and guidance that they have received and the way in which it has complemented their faith background or, if they have not come from a faith background, the way in which it has prompted them to live a life faithful to the teachings of Christ. And many of them answered this question by commenting on how much they valued the sacrifices that their parents had made to send them to this School. Congratulations to our students and you, their parents, for nurturing and supporting such wonderful young people. They will be excellent role models and student leaders in 2016.

Junior School CODY MAYNES-RUTTY – GO KART CHAMPION AT THE AGE OF 9!!!! Cody started Go Kart racing 2 years ago in July and is a member of Wollongong Kart Racing Club, where he is currently leading the Cadet 9 Championship as he has won all rounds this year. He was the Cadet 9 Champion for 2014. In the Cadet 9 class Cody is currently competing in the NSW State Championship which is run over 3 rounds and is currently coming second in this series the last round is to be held in 2 weeks in Lithgow. Cody has also competed at other Club rounds within NSW and has brought home first place on all occasions.

Judi Nealy Head of Junior School

While many of us were resting and having a relaxing holiday, many Junior School students were very busy over the holidays! We had students competing at State level Cross Country, a champion Go Kart racer as well as Year 6 beginning The Exhibition process.

Cody competed at the Rotax Pro Tour race at Eastern Creek this month, in his first race meeting in a 125 Rotax Micro Max engine. He was fastest for the weekend and ended up coming in 1st place. He therefore also won a “blue plate” which is the NSW State Title for the class Micro Max. This is the first time that this has been won in Australia, as this class has never been held before. Cody is competing in Puckapunyal in August for the 3rd round of this series, where a Vic State Title is up for grabs and then the last round is to be held in Ipswich. Cody will be looking to do more racing in other states this year and next. He will be aiming at going to Italy or the USA to compete in racing in the future and will be stepping up to new classes next year. Cody’s photo is on the Wall of Fame in the PCR Factory in Lombardy, in Italy. The owner of Scuderia PCR has placed a framed picture of Cody below the late Ayrton Senna, F1 driver on his wall. Simply amazing!!!!

PSSA CROSS COUNTRY SUCCESS Four students represented CIS at the NSW PSSA Cross Country Championships in the last week of the holidays at Eastern Creek. All students ran well in very muddy conditions and achieved excellent results: Allegra Fock placed 56th in the 9 Years 2km Alexander Vartazarian placed 45th in the 9 Years 2km Cooper Kerridge placed 2nd in the 10 Years 2km Ben Giason placed 4th in the 11 Years 3km Both Ben and Cooper’s exceptional performances gained them selection in the NSW PSSA team. They will now go on and compete at the School Sport Australia National Championships to be held in Melbourne on Friday 28 August. Congratulations on this outstanding achievement!

YEAR 6 EXHIBITION Year 6 students have commenced working on their Exhibition process over the holidays. This is the culminating activity of the PYP where our senior students negotiate their own central idea and work with a mentor through their own Unit of Inquiry. The areas being investigated include addiction, racism, terrorism, future food, migration, corruption, health choices, Global Warming, school achievement, social media, animal welfare, government, mental health, scientific discoveries and body image. Students have negotiated essential agreements as to how they will proceed collaboratively, they have explored the concept of academic honesty and have at this point begun working on a plan to achieve all of the required elements in preparation for the opening of the Exhibition on Monday 7 September (Week 8). Our whole school celebrates this important process and all parents and students are invited to attend the opening ceremony of The Exhibition.

MERIT CERTIFICATES

Meetings with mentors from across the School have commenced and our students are negotiating the large amount of research, synthesis and creativity now required of them in order to present their findings in just a few short weeks. This type of sustained inquiry is very demanding and requires great effort and focus. Our Year 6 students never fail to amaze us with the quality of the learning that occurs for the Exhibition and I look forward to not only mentoring my Exhibition group, but to seeing the impressive learning that will be shared at The Exhibition.

NASSA Athletics Carnival Despite many students pulling out of events at the last minute we had an extremely strong team compete at NASSA Athletics this year. We smashed the medal tally with 74 medals overall (30 Gold, 21 Silver and 23 Bronze), compared to the next closest school who achieved only 46 Medals. St Luke’s were 4th on the medal tally but took out the Carnival because they had a minimal number of students not turning up to events or not finishing events. Therefore they were able to pick up valuable points that we missed out on from athletes who came 4th – 16th. We came 3rd on on overall point with 2360 points behind Macarthur Anglican on 2364.5 and St Luke’s on 2540 points. We won the 17+ Years age group by over 100 points, we came 4th in the 15/16 age group with only 38.5 points between 1st and 4th place and we came 7th in the 12/14 year old age group. In Term IV we will be introducing

a new 12 month Talented Athletes Programme targeting the “all rounders” with the vision of improving our overall results. We have a huge team of 36 athletes selected for AICES on Monday 31 August. Training will take place on Tuesday afternoons at Beaton Park from 2.45pm – 4.45pm. Please contact Leonie Hinch if you are interested in attending this valuable session. If you cannot attend please also let Mrs Lane know ASAP. A special congratulations to our NASSA Age Champions: •

The other good news is that Lachlan was selected in the 16 man team to represent NSW later this year.

NSW Equestrian Interschool Championships Lauren O’Neill took both her horses to the NSW Equestrian Interschool Championships at Horsley Park. Lauren had 3 classes on each of her horses, Sam jumped in the 1.10mtr class consistently but without placing in tough competition. Hayden was the star. Friday’s conditions were atrocious to say the least and not such a good day. A huge improvement in the weather and conditions Saturday, and they placed 4th in the 1mtr AM5 class, and 5th in the A2 class on Sunday out of 60 riders. Lauren will now head to the Interschool Clinic, as she is in contention for The NSW Show Jumping Team for the National Championships for the second year running.
