Learning an Additional Language The Australian Government has published its National Plan for School Improvement (NPSI) which has been scheduled for implementation from 2014. The most notable element of the Plan is the introduction of a new funding system, often referred to as the Gonski Funding Agreement, and NSW is the first State to sign up for the new system. It is a requirement that states that sign up to the new funding model will also support the other initiatives of the NPSI. One of these initiatives is a commitment to the learning of Asian languages. The NPSI documents describe this commitment as follows: “Every student will have opportunities to engage with our region, including its languages and cultures. •
Schools will provide access to quality Asian language learning, with four priority languages: Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Indonesian and Japanese.
•
Schools will incorporate studies of Asia across the curriculum. This means students will leave school with the cultural knowledge and skills necessary to be active in the region.”
•
http://www.betterschools.gov.au/docs/national-plan-school-improvement
Implementing this initiative is already underway at TIGS. Language learning is mandated by the NSW Board of Studies and is also an integral part of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP).
Stephen Kinsella Headmaster
At TIGS, students learn languages in the following ways: Years 2 to 6
All students learn Japanese
Year 7 (from 2013)
Students have a choice of Japanese, Mandarin and French, which will be studied continuously through to Year 10
Years 8 to 10
Students in Year 8 must study the language chosen in Year 7, then further study in Years 9 and 10 if the language is chosen as an elective
Years 11 and 12
Study in Japanese, French, Beginner’s Italian or Chinese for Background Speakers if chosen as an elective
At TIGS we are committed to providing students with the opportunity to learn an additional language. Many of our students already are proficient in a second language. A survey of students in our Junior School found that 71 students spoke a language other than English at home. Currently we have 30 International students from South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Vietnam and Thailand enrolled at TIGS. There are many reasons why we are committed to our students learning an additional language: •
It broadens our understanding of people from other cultures. While it is good to know about cultural differences such as food, clothing and religious practice, we gain a better understanding of others when we learn their language. This not only allows us to communicate personally, it gives us an insight into how others think. Globalisation and the growth of the internet mean that it is highly likely that our students will communicate with people from around the world and interact with them as part of their study and work. Those that can communicate using the languages of others are well placed to succeed in such a world.
•
The understanding that comes from learning another language also creates empathy toward the people who speak that language. The understanding of others and the development of personal relationships between cultures that become possible through language learning is the most successful way to counter the bigotry and racism that appears all too often in Australian society and culture.
•
The human brain functions better when it learns another language. Skills in organisation, memory and expression have been found to all improve with language learning, not just in the new language but in the mother tongue as well. Research shows that learning a pictorial language such as Japanese also has benefits in developing both the right hemisphere of the brain (visual literacy from learning and understanding the characters) and the left hemisphere (memory and logic from the structure of the language).
• For purely pragmatic reasons, an ability to speak multiple languages will increasingly be essential in forging a career in a global economy. Employees that can communicate with overseas based work colleagues, managers or customers are in increasingly high demand. With subject selection in the Senior School commencing at the end of term, students would do well to be certain of any decision to discard the learning of an additional language. Did you know that at TIGS: • Students who are bilingual are attending LEAP classes each morning before school. The LEAP (Language Enrichment Activities Program) supports our children in their development of their heritage language as well as their proficiency and skill in the language of instruction at our school (English).
•
Students in the Junior School are also attending additional private language tuition in Mandarin, Hindi and Bahasa Indonesian. These classes are delivered by specialist tutors and offer an exciting opportunity for further language development for families who value this learning.
•
Students from TIGS regularly visit sister schools in Japan and develop language skills in New Caledonia.
•
Students from sister schools in Japan, China and Thailand regularly visit and study at TIGS.
More information about the study of languages at TIGS can be obtained from the Director of Teaching and Learning in the Senior School, Ms Melina Sangster, the Director of Teaching and Learning for K – 6, Mrs Dianne Bryant or the Head of Languages, Ms Doriana Previati. Stephen Kinsella Headmaster
Framework for Generosity Earlier this week in devotions in the Junior School Mrs Kathy McMahon shared this insightful piece on stewardship. I thought it was worth repeating for us all, particularly given that a Christian conception of stewardship is a vital part of our strategic plan as a School: “The Lord abhors dishonest scales, but accurate weights are his delight.” (Proverbs 11.1) “How do we go about establishing a framework for generosity? First - decide that nothing you possess is your own but that everything you have belongs to God. This puts God in His place and you in yours. You are now ready to manage His possessions, not as you like but as He likes. This is real freedom. It gives you a sense of accountability to another - God. You get your life orders not from a whim, a notion, self-impulse or whatever takes your fancy, but from the one who saved you and redeemed you. Second - go over your life and see what belongs to your needs and what merely belongs to your wants. Your needs are important - God has promised to supply them - but your wants? Ah, that is another thing. You need as much as will make you fit - spiritually, physically and mentally - for the purposes of God while you are here on the earth. Beyond that, what you have belongs to the needs of others. How do you decide what belongs to your needs? No one can decide it for you - though they can make suggestions - for you are accountable to God. Go over your life item by item and ask Him for directions. Your family should figure prominently in your concerns, but you must check everything with the Lord. Third - fix it as an axiom in your mind that Chaplain you will be generous to people, not for the good feelings that generosity brings, but because you are determined to bless them in some way. You must never be generous in order to get a blessing - you must be generous to be a blessing.”
Rev James Rogers
To be sure, stewardship involves a lot more than this, but there are some great principles to be found here. The challenge now is to let these truths permeate our approach to life. Rev James Rogers Chaplain

Preparing
One of our school’s aims is to prepare our students to be ‘wise architects of the future.’ In the last week a number of our students have been acknowledged in the wider community and internationally for their exceptional service, skills and achievements. With the future in the hands of such outstanding young people we can only be positive and inspired by the vision, compassion and understanding that they will bring to the leadership roles which will be theirs in the global context of the 21st century. Ethan Butson will be competing, next week, in Phoenix, Arizona in the Finals of the International Science and Engineering Competition as a member of the Australian Team. Ethan will present his research entitled “Save the Skin You’re In! Prevention of skin cancer whilst optimising Vitamin D synthesis” Piper Stewart and Sarah Long will be representing Australia in the International Future Problem Solving Finals in Indianapolis, Indiana next month. Their project “Kids Count” encourages bystanders to step in against bullying. This week, Kate Martin travelled to Sydney University to receive an award for Academic Excellence which she had achieved through her studies in 2012. Emma Hatton and Ellice Morton were awarded ‘Highly Commended’ at the Illawarra Women in Business Awards in the ‘Future Leaders’ category. It was also wonderful to see Alumna and international violinist, Sarah Moir Deputy Headmaster and (nee Pollard), entertain as one of the ‘String Angels’ at the IWIB awards ceremony. Henry Hulme Head of Senior School has been notified that he has received one of only 10 nationally conferred, Youth Link Australia Awards which could lead to him attending the 2014 Global Young Leaders Conference. And Hengji Mei will travel to Sydney as a finalist in the NSW Government’s International Student of the Year Awards.

Junior School Sport Update Term I was a hectic term for sporting events and representative pathways in the Junior School. NASSA Basketball, NASSA Tennis, Junior School Swimming Carnival, NASSA Junior Swimming, South Coast Regional Futsal Championships, NASSA Football, CIS Swimming, Junior School Cross Country and NASSA Netball, meant that our PE staff and Junior School children were kept busy trialling, training and competing throughout the term. Some notable results were achieved by several students: • • • •
Benae Kuiper was selected in the CIS girls basketball team Margaux Chauvet was selected into the CIS girls football team Aria Bacic-Johnston qualified to represent NSW at School Sport Australia Swimming Championship Futsal Champions - all four TIGS teams qualified to participate in the State Championships in July
Aria Bacic-Johnston participated in the NSW PSSA Swimming Championships and came second in the 10 years girls back stroke finals in a time of 38.25. This is an outstanding performance and to put such an achievement in perspective this morning we Googled ‘how many schools in NSW?’ the answer being 3,136 schools in NSW which equates to Aria coming second place out of Head of Junior School approximately 60,000 10 year old girls. She will now go on to represent NSW at the Schools Sports Australia Championships in September in Adelaide and when we crunched in the question ‘how many schools there are in Australia’ Google came up with 9568 which equates to approximately 150,000 10 year old girls. Well done and good luck at Nationals Aria!

The Junior School Cross Country was a highlight for the PE staff, with students committing through their PE lessons and in individual training, to improve their general fitness and ability to run without stopping for 2 – 3 kms. Congratulations must go to all students in years 3 to 6 whose participation and effort ensured a great day under trying conditions. A special congratulations goes to Wolgal, the winning house, closely followed by Kogara, Aranda and Coligan who were only separated by two points, which equates to one person’s participation points, highlighting the importance of coming to all carnivals and participating strongly on the day. The first week of Term II saw our Junior School Cross Country representatives heading up to Macarthur Anglican School to compete at the NASSA carnival. Their results were outstanding with 23 student’s progressing to CIS and the TIGS Junior Team placing 2nd behind Penrith Anglican College. Many thanks to Mrs Dribbus for her efforts during the holidays coaching our representative team and to the children who were all committed to training and doing their best representing their School.

Extend @ TIGS Weekly Recap Homework Club is up and running again and the children are back into routine. They enjoyed playing Baseball/Teeball down in the Oval, everyone having a turn at batting and bowling. For Craft, the children made photo fridge magnets using their photos, foam alphabets, and glitter. They also made some chatterboxes on the side. We will be having a “TIGS Special Guest Star” one Friday a month to come into our centre and show off a special talent that they have. I am sure the ASC children will love this! Please pop in to see Ms Indy if your child is keen to do this.

Home Stay Opportunities In August this year, students from our partner school in Hong Kong will participate in a two week study tour at our School. These students will attend classes in our Junior School commencing 3 August 2013. We need to provide accommodation and meals for these students. Would you be willing to host a student for one or two weeks? This is a great opportunity to provide an overseas student with an insight into the Australian way of life and for them to experience our culture first hand. It would be a most rewarding family experience for you too. Your child could extend their language learning, build a relationship with a child from another country, and gain insight into another culture. If you would like to be involved, please be in contact with Sally Ann Gail at the School. Sally Ann manages the International Student Program and would be keen to hear from you. She can be contacted on 42 200 269 or via email sgail@tigs.nsw.edu.au

Senior School Sports Congratulations to Lauren O’Neil (Year 10) on her outstanding results at the Royal Easter Show. Lauren was one of four riders selected to represent the Pony Clubs in the Illawarra, Southern Highlands, Blue Mountains and Sydney Areas. The team then competed against six other teams consisting of riders from all over NSW. Lauren and her team mates won the Royal Easter Show Event, which was a fantastic result.
Our next challenge – defending the Pines Surfing Competition 2013 on Monday, May 13, after winning it in 2012.
AICES Schools Tennis Cup At the end of last term our TIGS Boys Tennis team Fred Newman (Year 12),
Individually Kelsey Cresswell swam in eight events and has made the CIS team for the 200m backstroke. Joshua King swam in eight events and has made the CIS team for the 50m butterfly. Aaron Cannon exceeded all expectations winning six gold medals and was named Multi class Swimmer of the Meet. Overall the TIGS boys swimming team came fifth out of all CIS schools. Congratulations to all swimmers who represented the School at this event.
All Schools South Coast Surfing Championships
We look forward to hearing about their results from the upcoming all schools swimming championships.
AFL - NSW CIS U15s Trials
Adrian Haise (Year 11), Mitchell Main (Year 7), Fondas Haris (Year 11) and Oscar Edwards (Year 9) played in the AICES Schools Tennis Cup.
On Tuesday, 2nd April 2013, TIGS took a team of 10 surfers down to Rennies Beach, Ulladulla, for the 2013 All Schools South Coast Surfing Championships. These students were Ethan Hennessy (Year 7), Ollie Birt (Year 8), Billy Fisher (Year 8), Tim Kidall Park (Year 9), Grace Hennessy (Year 9), Michaela McGrath (Year 8), Miriam Birt (Year 10), Harrison Steele (Year 11), Angus Cochrane (Year 11) and Joshua Chapple (Year 11). It was not a good start to the day when star surfer Joshua Chapple received a head injury during warm up requiring stitches and could not compete. It was a good day had by all with some great results from the students competing. All students were excellent ambassadors for the School in regards to their sportsmanship and behaviour. Special mention goes to Billy Fisher, Angus Cochrane and Harrison Steele, who all made it through their tough heats into the semi-finals. An outstanding effort was provided by Michaela McGrath as she had to compete in the senior girls division even though she is in Year 8. Despite this, Michaela displayed exceptional poise and skill to advance all the way to the final but unfortunately finished outside the top three in the final. Further, I would like to thank the parents, Chris Hennessy, Prof. Julie Steele (Photography) and Dr. Michelle McGrath (medical services) for their assistance on the day.
The boys were closely challenged by William Clarke College (TIGS 5-1), Moriah College (3-3 went to games and TIGS won 22-21), Kinross Wolaroi (TIGS won 5-1). There were over 60 schools in the AICES association and the TIGS Boys Tennis Team were declared AICES Champions. Congratulations to all of the boys as they now go on to represent AICES at CIS level.
Swimming Congratulations to both Aaron Cannon (Year 12) and Kelsey Cresswell (Year 9) on their results at the National Age Championships held in Adelaide. Aaron achieved bronze medals in the 400m and 50m freestyle multi class event. Kelsey achieved fourth place in the 200m backstroke. To come top four nationally is an outstanding result. At the CIS swimming last week students swam in both relay and individual events. The 12-19yrs girls freestyle relay team is one swimmer from each age group. The team of Shelby Cresswell (Year 7), Kelsey Cresswell (Year 9), Jana Massingham (Year 7), Alice Fox (Year 9), Olivia Poate (Year 10) and Kate Martin (Year 11) came fifth overall. The 12-14 girls relay team consisting of Jana Massingham (Year 7), Laura Gibbons, Kelsey Cresswell (Year 10) and Sarah I’Ons (Year 8) came fifth in the freestyle relay and sixth in the medley relay.
Mitchell Ferguson (Year 9) and Noah Butler (Year 8) were nominated recently to participate in the CIS AFL Under 15s selection trials held in Heathcote on Wednesday of week 1. Over 50 players from across NSW attended the trials in the hope of being selected in a 22 man squad who will represent NSW CIS at the NSW U15 AFL State Championships played later in the year. Both Noah and Mitchell represented the School, the Illawarra and the Code well and can be proud of their efforts on the day. Unfortunately neither of the boys were selected but both valued the opportunity to compete against AFL players from across the State.
NASSA Netball Gala Day On Thursday 4th April the TIGS Junior, Intermediate and Senior Netball Teams participated in the NASSA Netball Gala Day in Minto. With overall results combined TIGS came second with the Intermediate girls going through the day undefeated and winning the Intermediate division. The teams consisted of the following students: YEAR 7 TEAM Renee Thomson Camellia Bizimovski Holly Kitely Chloe Lavalle Ashley Dribbus Rachel English Isabella Sandy Grace Summerill YEAR 8 and Year 9 TEAM (Intermediate Champions) Ruby Pallone Grace Fitch Taylah White Stephanie Shalala Mackenzie Roberts Klara Zecavic Jackie Connor Emelia Bujaroska Caitlin Chadwary
OPENS TEAM Zoe Wulff Cassandra Wallace Breanna Anastas Simone Lindsay Brenda Tekkol Olivia Poate Elizabeth Dominis Kristen Chadrawy Stephanie Varcoe All teams played with good spirit during the day and experienced a mixture of wins and losses. They faced some extremely strong competition at times, but held their own and continued to improve as the day progressed. A number of our players were selected in the NASSA Netball Team to trial for the AICES Netball Team. They were as follows: Jacqui Connor (Year 9), Mackenzie Roberts (Year 9), Ruby Pallone (Year 8), Taylah White (Year 8). Congratulations to these students, and to all of the girls who represented the school so well on the day.
Girls and Boys Rugby Development Day
The boys also had the opportunity to develop and extend their skills under the professional guidance of Jay Tregonning who has many years of experience both playing and coaching the game. Throughout the session, the boys focussed on team work, positional play and ball skills. They had the opportunity of playing a game at the end of the session which enabled them to put all that they had learnt into action. Many thanks to Vikings Rugby Club for the use of their facilities, and Sean Barrett and Jay Tregonning for organising the day.
NASSA Cross Country Last Friday nearly 90 students represented TIGS at the Senior School NASSA Cross Country at Macarthur Anglican School. Our students were exceptional in both their performance and their sportsmanship. Congratulations to all of the students who competed as TIGS were Overall Champion School and also won the Junior Shield and came second in the Intermediate and Senior categories. Well done to the following students who achieved top three in their age division: Ashley Dribbus 1st 12 year girls James Seal 1st 13 year boys Rebekah Hutton 2nd 13 year girls Elizabeth Martin 2nd 14 year girls Angus Pryde 2nd 15 year boys Teagan Johnston 3rd 15 years girls Maudie Skyring 1st 16 year girls Roisin Concannon 3rd 16 year girls Alexander Seal 1st 17 year boys Hamish Paine 3rd 17 year boys The AICES Cross Country will be held on the 6 June at Macarthur Anglican School. All students who came in the top ten at NASSA will be invited to run at the AICES Championships.
On Tuesday 30 April, a group of students from Years 9, 10 and 11 attended a Rugby Union Development Day at Vikings Oval. The girls were fortunate enough to have a full morning session with Sean Barrett who is the Australian Rugby Union Development officer for the Illawarra. Sean’s expertise and passion for the game was evident and the girls enjoyed participating in activities that developed their knowledge and skill level. The girls worked on attack and defensive skills, game play and learnt how to tackle correctly. They all left with a high level of respect and interest for the game of Rugby.
There is over a month till AICES so come along to cross country training Thursday afternoons from 3.30pm-4.30pm. Meet on the Library Lawn.
Bill Turner Cup Football The U15s Bill Turner Cup team played their first game of Football last Thursday. The 14 man squad travelled to Macedonia Park to take on Warilla High in what proved to be a very competitive game. We took an early
lead thanks to a goal off the head of Isaac Osborne. But Warilla struck back shortly with their own header coming off a well placed corner. The game stayed at 1 all for quite some time and opportunities were missed at both ends of the park. However Zac McLaren (Year 10) broke the deadlock with some good individual skill and Harrison Taranto(Year 8) gave us more breathing space with another goal shortly after. A further goal by Zac saw us comfortably home with a 4 to 1 win. It was a great start to the competition in which we were runners up last year. The team showed great composure under pressure and excellent teamwork in the movement of the ball and in restricting their attacks. We look forward to our next round against Kiama High.
Gold Duke of Edinburgh Expedition During the Easter Break 13 Students in Year 12 travelled to New Zealand and completed the adventurous component of their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. The trip was a huge success, the students were outstanding in their organisation and conduct while camping. We walked Routeburn and Kepla Tracks and both walks turned on the weather and spectacular views. Students on this trip should be proud of what they have accomplished on this challenge. We would like to thank Ms. Bernadette Henry for her support and willingness to come on the trip. The students appreciated her efforts and presence. Congratulations to the following students for making it an outstanding trip. Thomas Bolt, Claire Bonham, Helena Bonham, Simon Bussoletti, Grace Crisp, Jessica Defreitas, Rahul Johnson, Oscar Sargeson, Darshan Sitharthan, Cassandra Wallace, Benjamin Yeatman, Michael Ledwidge all conducted themselves in a way the school would be proud.
