NEWSLETTER - March 2011 Latin, Celtic & Parody Folk Club Concert Get Folked, Pukara, John Dengate 7.30pm Friday 4 March CITY DIGGERS WOLLONGONG Members $10, Non-Members $15 A big weekend for Folkies There’s March Flies, March Hares, March Madness and the March of the Penguins. The first weekend in March in the Illawarra is the beginning of the March of the Folkies.

It kicks off on Friday March 4th at the City Diggers Club with a concert of great diversityLatin Celtic and Parody.

Pukara is a Latin-American group that started performing in 2008. The group is made up of six experienced and talented musicians (Patricio Espinoza, Sebastian Fierro, Danilo Hidalgo, Hugo Leal, Sergio Vargas and Fernando Valenzuela). All the musicians come from Chile, and are based in Inner West, Eastern and Illawarra are. They are multi-skilled, playing many different instruments such as acoustic guitar, charango, bass, quenas (flutes), zampoñas (pan pipes), tiple and percussion.

The group has performed for many multicultural activities (Refugee Week), festivals (Café Carnivale, Mary McKillop Commemoration, Bondi Latin American Festival, Australian – Peruvian Friendship Society Fund Raising Cultural Evenings) and have a strong commitment towards community based activities (supporting many South American solidarity groups living in Australia).

Illawarra Folk Club This newsletter is the official publication of the Illawarra Folk Club Inc. Folk Club Concerts Concerts are generally held twice a month at various locations in the Illawarra area.

The musicians have a rich experience in very many different bands such as Sonido de los Andes, Amaru, Ukamau, Kalisaya, Ukikuna and Rimana bringing together an incredible wealth of knowledge and creativity to frame this concert. All the musicians are talented composers and have in their repertoire a wide range of original music composed both here in Australia, reflecting our multicultural society, and in Chile.

(Pukara – means Fortress in the Aymara language) John Dengate is Australia’s master of parodyhis satirebites, his songs are clever and his sense of the ridiculous is highly developed.

He reduces pomposity to banality and he dances precariously around the libel laws.

Above all, however, he is an entertainer. John also has prodigious memory and his repertoire of traditional material is second to none. John also writes songs about everyday life, the traumas of catching a train to Guildford, the experience of skin cancer and the problems of being a losing punter. If you reckon you’ve seen John Before well it’s almost certain you have. He has performed at every one of the 26 Illawarra Festivals and is a very familiar face on the busking scene in Sydney, especially around Central Railway.

Three young musicians playing the traditional Celtic Music burst on the Illawarra Folk Scene in October lat year and followed up with stirling performances on the train and at the festival.

They came down for the volunteers thank you in February and they are back again for this concert. "GET FOLKED are the new faces of old music. Combining traditional Irish, Scottish and medieval music with other folk influences alongside their own unique style, Get Folked are three odd, folky blokes. From the streets to the stage to the folk session at the pub, they've played their music throughout Sydney and continue to do so, with major folk festivals and the release of a CD in the near future."

And of course there is the Mystery Performer.

Cost of the Night is just $10 for members, $15 others.

Another big concert on Sunday Afternoon, February 6th at 2pm this time you can enjoy the great ambience of the Wongawilli Hall and bring something to throw on the Barbie after the concert, and share a bit of conviviality with friends and performers.

We have managed to snare one of the best and most highly respected names in the Australian Folk scene (even though he’s a Pom) Martyn Wyndham-Read and get the Illawarra’s largest folk band, ‘No such Thing’ to support him

Martyn Wyndham-Read has been involved with folk music for over forty years. In his late teens he left his mother’s farm in Sussex and headed off, with his guitar, to Australia where he worked on a sheep station Emu Springs in South Australia. It was while he was there that he heard, first hand, the old songs sung by some of the station hands at Emu Springs and he became captivated by these songs and the need to know more of them and where they came from grew.

He headed off to Melbourne and became part of the folk song revival there and throughout Australia during the early1960’s..

Back to England in 1967 where he met up with the renowned singer and song collector Bert Lloyd, who himself had spent time in Australia.

Martyn was asked by Bert Lloyd to be part of the album ‘Leviathan’ on the Topic label and soon after he started recording for Bill Leader and touring extensively worldwide.

In the early 1970’s Martyn started the ‘Maypoles to Mistletoe’ concerts which portray the seasons of the year through song, music, dance and verse and illustration. Martyn is also the instigator of the well known Song Links Project, Martyn is currently working with Shirley Collins on a production called ‘Down the Lawson Track’ featuring stories, poems/songs of the great Australian Poet of the People, Henry Lawson with Pip Barnes, Iris Bishop, Gary Holder and Jackie Oates.

His CD Jackeroo portrays his life so far through songs both old and new.

Jackman. No Such Thing never fail to get your feet tapping and put a smile on the face of many a dancer. If you love traditional dance music you’ll love No Such Thing.

From Canada comes Ann Vriend and from NZ (originally UK) comes Gilly Darbey. Both are making return visits to the club after appearing some years ago. Never before has the club had two female singers of such high caliber on the same bill The ever popular Gilly Darbey has performed at the club on a number of occasions when she has been on tour from the UK and has a great following here in the Illawarra.

Ann Vriend (pronounced Vreend) was born in Vancouver, BC. When her parents discovered their 3-year-old could play nursery songs on a Fisher Price xylophone, they encouraged her musical development by enrolling her in violin lessons. At age nine, when Vriend sought to accompany herself as a songwriter, she took piano lessons from an elderly woman down the street who charged $5 per visit. In high school, in order to be able to do submit her home-made recordings for a school project, Vriend was coerced into performing 3 of her compositions at the school talent show.

Accolades from her fellow students evolved into various projects with older students in bands, and soon afterward into interest from

major labels, praise from critics and the media, and loyal fans around the world.

Vriend's vulnerable yet exquisite voice is often the first thing that turns heads. It has been described as an enchanting cross between Dolly Parton and a young Aretha Franklin, while her story-like but often enigmatic lyrics reveal her lauded literary depth, influenced by writers such as Leonard Cohen and Paul Simon.

Vriend's songs possess a natural knack for melody, garnering her hits on both independent and commercial radio stations -- including Gold rotation for her tune “Feelin' Fine” in her home town of Edmonton, Alberta -- and have charted on college stations as far away as Cologne, Germany. Her music has been featured in a U.S. DVD release of “Party of Five,” and she was commissioned to write a song for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia.

From composition to composition Vriend's music varies between “old school” soul, Americana, indie pop, and jazz influenced numbers, yet she maintains a consistency of sound in her immediately recognizable vocal and lyrical approach. Vriend’s quirkiness and self-taught piano stylings draw comparisons to Regina Spektor and Kate Bush, though she also has a country and soul vocabulary in the vein of Ray Charles and Lyle Lovett. In short, "When it comes to women with pianos, there are endless comparisons to make, but Vriend stands out from the crowd." (Drum Media, Australia).

Illawarra Folk Club Package to 2011 Perisher Snowy Mountains of Music The 3rd Perisher Snowy Mountains of Music will be held from 10-13 June 2011.

Over 250 artist applications have been submitted. The lineup promises to be another eclectic collection of musicians - 40 acts / 130 performers. Those that have experienced the fledgling festival know of the magic of music in the snow! The 10 venues are all intimate and cosy, a great way to experience music.

The Illawarra Folk Club will once arrange a Package tour which includes Coach travel, Festival Season Pass and 3 nights bed and breakfast at the Sundeck Hotel or Smiggins Hotel. The cost will be $400/$450 per person dependent on the bedding arrangements requested.

Iconic 60s and 70s Folk Singer Buffy SainteMarie (Canada) will be on tour in Australia in April. Buffy is a native Cree Indian who 40 years ago wrote the immortal song, Universal Soldier. Her songs have been covered by a ‘Who’s who’ of musicians, including Elvis Presley, Bobby Darren, Donovan, Cher, Barbara Streisand and Joe Cocker. Her only concert in NSW will be at the State Theatre on Saturday 23rd April (Support Michelle Shocked)

James Fagan and Nancy Kerr won the Best Duo award at the BBC Folk Awards at the posh bash in London this month. This is the second time they have won this award.... last time was in 2003. Very well deserved.

********* The old rapscallion poet has turned his mind to the local language and suggests a whole new use for a simple couple of words that have been in the news a bit lately.

He says “This week, homage to the latest wide-spread contribution to our precious ocarism. (deliberately no capital)” ..IT HAPPENS When you think you’re in control, when things are going right, And as far as you can see, there’s not one hitch in sight.

When your power is at its peak, and you’re there to direct it, When all the planets are aligned, just when you least expect it “..IT HAPPENS” Those two little words, understated, not excessive, Yet with such wealth of meaning, so pungent, so expressive, Have entered into language, especially in Oz, To cover situations, verbally, becos… “..IT HAPPENS” “..IT HAPPENS”, now in common use, can cause embarrassment. especially on TV, or when used in Parliament, or taken out of context, to create some vicious schism.

Would you call the phrase a ‘Tony’, or perhaps and ‘Abbottism”?

Mind you, when “..IT HAPPENS”, and some television station, Drags it up from months ago, as some revelation, And confronts the user, as a headline kind of thing, Just to monitor the reaction that such an act might bring … “..IT HAPPENS” There is not one situation that cannot be explained, By using those two little words. Linguists should be trained To teach the population to use the phrase astutely, It could be as valuable as that treasure ‘absolutely’. “..IT HAPPENS” could be used in all sorts of ceremonies, Marriages and Christenings, in varying degrees.

Not, perhaps, in sermons. You’d have to draw the line, For when used inappropriately, it would surely be a sign…..that “..IT HAPPENS” Just imagine what would happen if the phrase did not exist, The countless opportunities for all those chances missed To explain a failure, a lacking, a disaster, “..IT HAPPENS” covers everything, and it does it faster.

A ‘Tony’ or an ‘Abbottism’, you can make your choice, “..IT HAPPENS” is connected to a total lack of voice.

a trip we'll never forget. Bobbie and I had a fantastic time at the Festival. I was truly impressed by the quality and depth of the talent in Australia. We learned a lot about the country there. Ted Egan even gave me his book and cd. I'm reading through the book now.

Someone we met at the festival took us up to Sydney on Monday, and then through some of the Blue Mountains. We stayed at a hotel in Parramatta on Monday night. He picked us up again on Tuesday and took us to catch a Rivercat ferry, which took us through the Sydney harbor to Circular Quay. From there we took the train to the airport, and flew home through LA and Chicago. It was a very long day, since we left Sydney on Tuesday afternoon, and arrived in LA on Tuesday morning. We got home at 1:30 am on Wednesday after about a 3-hour delay in Chicago. There were some weather problems and other delays for de-icing.

Thanks so much for all your help in getting us accommodations in Steve's campertrailer. I really enjoyed getting to mc some of the shows at the Bulli Show Pavillion.

The bush poetry was a new thing for me, and a totally pleasant surprise. I would hope that we could do something like that here. It is somewhat similar to our Cowboy Poetry with interesting stories and humour.

The Bluegrass shows were really great, too.

I especially enjoyed Innes Campbell and his band. They were as good as any bluegrass bands I have seen in the US. I will be telling everyone I know about the Illawarra Folk Festival...from now on.

Thanks again! And please pass my thanks along to the other committee members on the festival.

Had to finally give up and leave as there were so many noisy, drunk VERY

young people near the bar. Do they really stick to the RSA laws here?? Next night the same thing with Ami Williamson. The accoustics in there are just not good. I know that with such big numbers you have to use as many venues as possible, so it may be an unsolvable problem. Again on the positive side, the Chapel was just superb on the hot hot days. We enjoyed sitting in the shade at the back of the venue, sound was still good and we got the breeze. Eric Bogle was the icing on the cake. And Wongawilli, as always my favourite!
