The event is a ticket only entry on Friday and Saturday and Sunday, featuring 52 artists from overseas and all around Australia in 140 concerts.

The festival will be based at 8 venues at/near the Kiama Showground Pavilion over the three days, before moving to Kiama Bowling Club for a finale concert on Sunday evening.

Limited camping sites are available at the showground. There is quality accommodation in and around Kiama – call Kiama Visitor Centre on 1300 654 262 or visit their website.

The festival is presented by volunteers from the Illawarra Folk Club Inc. who present regular folk music concerts in the Illawarra region and the world famous Illawarra Folk Festival.

Kiama is about a 2 hour drive from Sydney on the South Coast of New South Wales.

Welcome

Welcome to the seventh edition of Folk by the Sea. It doesn’t seem all that long since we put a toe into the water at Surf Beach and cautiously tried out Kiama for number one. Since then, FbtS has established itself as one of the “must go to” events in the very packed Kiama annual calendar.

We now have an established team of volunteers, sound technicians and supporters, who all contribute to this great annual event.

Kiama has a number of annual music festivals and events and the Illawarra Folk Club, who run this event, have deliberately kept this distinctly as a FOLK festival. However our interpretation of the Folk genre is fairly wide and you should be able to find more than enough music that you can enjoy amongst the eight venues.

This year we have moved to a three day paid event within the Showground confines, mixing the international, national and local acts throughout the weekend.

Folk by the Sea continues to be supported by both Destination Kiama and Kiama Council and we are very appreciative of that. In addition the support given by individual Kiama council staff members and the various departments makes life very easy when we have to negotiate the multiple legal and coordination tasks that always exist for an event like this.

Finally, we thank you, the paying audience for your support of our unique festival, staged in such a beautiful part of the South Coast. We both feel very privileged to be able to coordinate this event.

Mayor of Kiama

On behalf of Kiama Municipal Council, I welcome you all to what I think is the best located and loved folk festival in Australia. Kiama Council with Destination Kiama is pleased to continue our longstanding support for the Folk by the Sea Festival. Council is dedicated to providing our community the opportunity to enjoy great cultural events in our own backyard. Certainly the 2019 Folk by the Sea Festival fits the bill.

The Illawarra Folk Club is to be congratulated for again assembling a topnotch program, with 52 artists playing 140 concerts, dances and sessions over 3 days. Of course Folk by the Sea is also a big drawcard for music lovers beyond of municipality.

The organisers, with the support of Destination Kiama, have left no stone unturned to ensure Kiama will be the place to be no matter if your taste is for folk, world, roots, celtic, bluegrass or gypsy. The weekend is always produces a fantastic atmosphere around town.

At the same time Folk by the Sea has become an important part of efforts to build a year-round tourism economy. Bringing hundreds of music fans into our municipality from all over Australia for three days in September is a significant boost to local business.

It also assist efforts by Destination Kiama to increase the number of overnight stays by our visitors. Much of this is built on the selfless and tireless efforts of the many volunteers who make Folk by the Sea a fantastic and well-run event for the artists and fans alike. Well done to everyone involved and may you enjoy a fun folk-filled time.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY •

Festival wristband must be worn at all times. All children must also have an wristband as well. • Sound / Video recordings are not permitted without the prior written consent from the Festival Coordinators. • No pets allowed on the site, except registered dogs who have been approved by the festival organisers.

Festival help guide This may be your first folk festival, so here’s some idea about what to do.

• Buy your pass on-line to save you money & time.

• Buy your camping pass online as well as these are only issued with 3 Day Festival Passes.

• If you’re driving to the festival then make your way to the Kiama Showground Pavilion • If you’re using public transport then walk up to the main entry gate and head for the Festival Office in the Kiama Showground Pavilion.

• Make sure you get a full programme when you do the pass/wristband exchange. This is your map to the venues, performers and general information.

• Grab a refreshment and study the program to decide who you want to see or just take pot luck!

Having a highlighter pen is a good idea. Mark the events you want to catch.

• Don’t panic if you can’t make up your mind!

Chances are you won’t know too many of the acts. Just walk the site!

You’ll discover music you’ve never heard or you’ll end up dancing, reciting or just watching.

If you don’t like what you see move onto another venue.

• At the end of the day (night) and if you’ve still got energy then hang around the bar as the musicians will be up for a tune or two. Sometimes the best music is played spontaneously at these late sessions!

• Remember to have fun, but be courteous to your fellow festival goers when leaving!

The Festival Ticket Office is located in the Kiama Showground Pavilion. This is where you purchase passes or exchange your pre-purchased passvoucher for a wristband. Please wear it at all times! Adjacent to the Festival Office is the registration area for artists, sponsors and media.

Across The Great Divide (NZ)

Across the Great Divide are three passionate artists from Americana, Celtic and Scandinavian traditions creating a new and inspiring transatlantic sound.

From evocative soulful Celtic airs, to wild vibrant jigs, reels and originals, this is a compelling blend of artists and instruments not normally gracing the same stage.

Amie G

“Amie Grisold is a singer, songwriter and musician who creates beautiful original folk-pop music. Amie’s unique style and lyricism makes her stand out in the modern folk crowd. Her style has been compared to that of Missy Higgins, Sarah Blasko and Joni Mitchell.

Buck & Deanne

Buck & Deanne, a classic harmony duo with two plucky acoustic guitars. Together they create a straightforward, homespun sound that connects audiences with the roots of country, folk and downhome blues. They sing songs of hope, hurt and yearning, about a place where joy and sorrow walk hand in hand.

Cameron Jones Trio

Cameron Jones is a musician who draws inspiration from the driving rhythms and melodic honesty of the acoustic gypsy jazz guitar. He performs regularly with prominent Sydney bands; The Spyglass Gypsies and Gadjo Guitars. Jones is also the Creative Director of the Brisbane based OzManouche Festival.

Carefree Road Band

It is 50 years since the Woodstock Folk Festival in 1969. So it is a good time to relive this iconic theme concert. With other bands Carefree Road will perform songs from the three days that changed the music world. So many bands to choose from - Creedence Clearwater Revival, Joan Baez, Canned Heat...

Chord-eaux

Chord-eaux is a Wollongong-based folk/bush band which supports folk music by performing folk songs and tunes from Australia and overseas at community events in the Illawarra area. Chord-eaux also plays regularly for the Wongawilli Colonial Dancers to help support their weekly dances.

Chris Matthews

With a larger than life stage presence, some mind blowing guitar shenanigans, and an ability to weave yarns and stories in song with the best of them, Kununurra based Chris Matthews will startle and astound with his uniquely Australian sound.

Co-cheol

With their spine tingling harmonies, charming storytelling and playful humour, award winning quartet Co-cheol have that rare ability to evoke the gamut of emotions from laughter to tears. These adventurous women perform traditional Scottish, Irish and original music, traversing a cappella and accompanied songs with captivating body percussion sublime musicianship.

Dear Violet

Dear Violet, are a young Australian trio from the Illawarra. Their enchanting harmonies accompanied by acoustic guitar are beautifully unique. They are

known for their covers of traditional folk songs and keeping folk alive for the next generations

Eddie Nuardo

Eddie Nuardo is a Melbourne-based singer/songwriter who released his debut album ‘The Good Whiskey Never Lasts’ in 2018. His songs are influenced by a love of old-time, folk and blues music from the early 20th century, alongside alt-country songwriters from the 60s and 70s.

Enda Kenny

A multi-award winning songwriter and twice winner of the Port Fairy Folk Festival songwriting award, Enda’s recent compositions highlight his quirky sense of humour and add to an already impressive catalogue of songs which led Colum Sands to describe him as “the finest Irish songwriter living overseas”.

Fly Little Sparrow

Lisa Lazuli and Lizzie Flynn come together to sing harmonies that emulate riding on the wings of a strong-willed bird. Heading on a flight path of beautiful harmonic arrangements, their eclectic repertoire and commentary will take you on a journey from fragility to hope.

Genni Kane & Jon Wilby with Christian Prusiak

ARIA award winning Genni Kane has been writing and performing her original songs for over 40 years.

Jon Wilby has been playing instruments with strings for just as long. Together with their friend Christian Prusiak they sing songs about love, loss, chickens, furniture, and nudity.

Good Tunes

David De Santi has been accumulating ‘good’ tunes for over 30 years and wants to share them! Be ready for a musical tour around Australia, Italy, Quebec, Scotland, Scandinavia, Spain, France, Ireland, England and beyond! Sheet music available or use your ear to join in.

Highlander

Highlander is one of Australia’s most entertaining live acts combining traditional Celtic based music with an acoustic rock edge that attracts audiences of all ages. Highlander delivers powerful traditional songs and instrumentals as well as modern day classics and original music. “”Double Award Winners for both traditional song and Instrumental”” - Australian Celtic Music Awards 2014.

Jessica Grainger

Jessica is a local singer/songwriter who blends together melody and lyrics that hold special significance in the Australian story (such as the Mt Kembla Mine disaster, Anzac Legends) as well as light hearted songs about getting children to bed, politics, dogs and life in general.

Jocean

Jocean (meaning joyous) is an emerging artist and singer-songwriter from Shellharbour. Jocean performs alongside his percussionist and father (Big Beats Brucey) and together this dynamic duo perform original acoustic songs that celebrate the power of faith and music, with an emphasis on social and environmental issues.

Justin Bernasconi

Justin is an acclaimed folk roots guitarist who’s playing has been lauded on both sides of the globe - on launching his last album Barefoot Wonderland in London, leading UK magazine fRoots described him as ‘like Leo Kottke and John Fahey on the instrumentals and John Prine on the songs.”

Kate Delaney & Denis Tracey

Kate Delaney is best known for her performance with late husband Gordon McIntyre. Since his death she has performed solo and in a variety of musical combinations. The combination with Denis Tracey came about by a recent ‘jam’ one Sunday afternoon, playing a variety of stringed instruments plus tin whistle and percussion.

Kiama Pipe Band

The sounds of the pipes and the beat of the drums can always draw a crowd in Kiama. The kilt worn by members of the Kiama Pipe Band is called the ‘Red Ulster’ tartan. Under the direction of Pipe Major Paul Wells the band is always willing to offer its support for local community events where the presence of the band can add some colour and spectacle.

Katandra womens a cappella choir

Repertoire is chosen from a wide range of musical styles including Jazz, Pop, Medieval, Folk and World Music, so everyone will find something that they can enjoy. What determines the choice of music is that it must be a beautiful song, a great arrangement of parts, have vocal skill building features and be fun to sing.

Me & Pete

Me & Pete are a contemporary folk rock duo playing original songs featuring catchy rhythms backed by melodic and sometimes growling harmonica, flute and sax. Their songs capture the emotions of love, nature, social justice and lessons learned.

Medusa’s Wake

Medusa’s Wake formed in Sydney in 2015, play music that is modern, but has traditional roots, music that is undeniably Australian and yet unmistakenly Irish at the same time. Foghorn Records describes their latest release “Rascals & Rogues” as “The love child between The Pogues and Australia’s own Roaring Jack.”

Murmur

Murmur are a three-piece band from Austinmer NSW. Murmur play a range of chilled brazilian and latin-american music. The bands set also features original songs influenced by this warm, tropical style of music. Murmur are Luke O’Neill (vocals and guitar), Matt Dickson (bass) and David Gale.

Narrownecks

With American old time string band roots, Narrownecks are based in Sydney, Australia. With fiddle, banjo, cello, guitar and mandolin, they offer a unique take on a traditional sound. Narrownecks renditions of oldtime fiddle tunes and sweet vocal harmonies are sure to keep you coming back for more.

Neil Murray

Founding Warumpi Band member and now maverick, award winning songman, Neil Murray released his 9th album ‘Blood & Longing’ this year. Widely covered, his song writing is diverse and influential and in concert he captivates and inspires taking the audience on a journey through Australian lands of rich stillness.

Nerida Cuddy

Described as a ‘Central West Mary Black’, Nerida has been capturing stories for over 20 years in finely crafted lyrics and emotive melodies. A true folky, she sings from the heart with a social conscience, sense of humour and love of country. Be ready to sing along!

No Such Thing

No Such Thing is a group of musicians who play collected Australian dance tunes. The band recreates the authentic feel of the old time dance bands and will soon get your feet tapping.

Oh Reach

Oh Reach is a weave of stark voices that produce a surreal gospel experience. A strange beauty, in the blend of three unique singers in harmony. A collaboration between: Marcus Gordon (Spookyland) , Terry Serio (The Ministry of Truth) and Simon Relf (the Tambourine Girls).

Peter Willey

Peter is simply hilarious! He’s a stand-up comedian, singer and musician. Stories, jokes, impressions, poems, original songs and parodies galore! He has performed at countless festivals.

Poncho Green

Poncho Green is a mostly acoustic and folk artist, at times blending elements of spoken word poetry with a flavour of flamenco. After releasing his debut album Livestock, he continues to write from his home in the Illawarra amidst themes of environmental shift and societal change.

Richard Grainger (UK)

Richard Grainger is a singer and songwriter, who captures the richness of the traditions of northern England, in particular his home county of North Yorkshire a region rich with maritime and industrial heritage. His songs range from the very serious to the hilarious, from climate change, shipwrecks and war to days out at the seaside.

Robyn Sykes

Robyn Sykes sculpts words using metaphors, metre, similes, rhyme and more. The award-winning poet, writer and entertainer has incubated crocodile eggs, lived in Japan, edited a newspaper, focused an electron microscope, worked on a farm and with her husband raised four sons. Experience bush poetry at its energetic best.

Roolya Boolya are a lively and lovely pair with their music encompassing the essence of all things Celtic; tradition, beauty and of course ‘craic’! Fiddles, guitars, mandolin and voices simply made for each other, promise a performance which will leave hearts warmer and toes toasty from tapping.

Rusty & The Saint

Long-time musical acquaintances finally come together on stage to present an eclectic selection of contemporary folk-influenced songs that will appeal to a wide audience. Rusty is Russell Churcher and The Saint is David De Santi. They have a swag of songs from the likes of Richard Thompson, Mark Knopfler, Guy Clark and Lyle Lovett.

Saoirse

Saoirse, from Victoria, provide soaring harmonies, beautiful ballads sung in English and Irish including original material, jigs and reels and even the odd step dance. A SAOIRSE performance will engage and delight your inner Celt!

Steve Wilson - Concertina Man

Steve Wilson “ Concertina Man” is one of the finest exponents in Australia of song accompaniment with concertina. His style is refreshing and he sings an eclectic mix of trad and contemporary folk, pop and original material including political satire aided by dancing puppets Pauline, Scomo, Malcolm and Tony.

Stuns’l Booms

Stuns’l Booms was formed this year for the inaugural Albany International Folk ‘n Shanty Festival. A straight forward folk group from Tasmania for pirates and bushrangers of any shape or size.

“Two Voices in the Crowd” performed by Sweet Songs & Soft Guitar is a performance of songs of Judy Small & Eric Bogle. The songs reflect the issues of a generation, and cover a wide range of subjects including women’s rights, social equity & environmental activism as well as promoting freedom from hatred, war and oppression.”

The Con Artists

The Con Artists are Australia’s largest folk orchestra playing a huge range of instruments with influences from French Canadian, Klezmer, Celtic, Slavic Romanian, New Orleans, Italian, Hungarian and African repertoires.

Trilogy

Trilogy is made up of sisters, Joy. Kathy and Robin Sharpe . We have been singing together for many years, we love harmonising and making up arrangements of folk songs, 60’s pop songs, country ballads, Aussie pop classics and what ever takes our fancy.

Victoria Vigenser & Lindsay Martin

An all-original, wild act, it’s folk that resembles everything else. The duo packs emotional punches, with songs to heal the scars. Lindsay Martin brings virtuosic strings and velvet vocals to the mix, while songstress Victoria Vigenser brings driving rhythms and lyrics with a magnificent voice.

Zlatkos Balkan Cabaret

Zlatko and friends, with their special love for gypsy music from the Balkans and Eastern Europe, share the spirited and captivating tunes of gypsy life, from moving love songs to passionate dance music, with the soul-stirring fire of true gypsy blood.
