On November 26th 1955 Ilkeston Town entertained South Normanton in a Derbyshire Senior Cup replay at the Manor Ground. The original tie had ended in a 1-1 draw two weeks earlier.
The teams were, Ilkeston Town :- Knibbs, Baker, Darwin, Commander, Smith, Hackland, Disney, Faulcobridge, Marsh,Johnson and Ward.
South Normanton :- Hickman, Walters, Smith, Percival, Sargerson, Peck, Ashcroft, Dulson, Wheatley, Rodgers and Rowlands.
Rowlands put the visitors ahead after only three minutes and there was more bad news for the Robins when Disney was carried off after a challenge by Peck. Ward got an equaliser for Ilkeston with a header from a Faulconbridge cross. Gulson put South Normanton 2-1 up but the plucky ten men of Ikeston fought back to win 4-2 through goals from Johnson, Marsh and Hackland.
Ilkeston went on to beat Manchester League leaders New Mills in the next round one week later. Further victories over Long Eaton Town, Clay Cross MW led to a final tie against local rivals Heanor Town. The Robins went on to win this tie 2-0 to secure the Derbyshire Senior Cup in front of nearly 12,000 fans at the Baseball Ground.
Ilkeston finished second in the Central Alliance which was the first
time in four years that they were not title winners. A winless run in December probably contributed their second place and they did not win another title until they won the Midland League in 1968.
Elsewhere Nottingham Forest were languishing sixth from bottom in Division Two and Notts county were two places below them. Blackpool were top of the First Division three points ahead of Manchester United.
Derby County were third in the Third Division North and were looking forwards to an FA Cup home tie against non-league Boston United. The Rams had beaten Crook Town in the previous round and were confident of a victory despite the fact that the Pilgrims had six ex Rams in their team and they were reported to be bring 2,000 fans to the game. Against all the odds Boston beat Derby 6-1 which was a record away win by a non league side over a league opposition away from home and was Derby’s first home defeat of the season. To add insult to injury four of the Boston goals were score by ex Derby players.
