elcome back to Dubai, the city where new trends, creative inspirations and the right match of styles bring to the stage the best design products, in a setting that has become in the last few years the cultural and commercial platform in the Middle East. downtown design and dubai design week come back once again to animate the Design capital in the Emirates, as a gateway of creativity increasingly opened to regional talents, renowned international interior brands and hospitality projects of strong identity.

Many events take place from 24 to 29 October at dubai design district and across the city’s points of reference for design, interior and architecture.

Walking through the highlights of the week, you will be surprised seeing how D3 – Dubai Design District is growing with the presence of the major sector players.

Thanks to a synergic relationship with the local Institutions, IFDM signs the first dubai on design issue, dedicated to the whole Design Week.

Located in D3, Hexalite will be made up of 1,145 Swarovski crystals and 33 hexagonal structures in mirror-polished steel.

The imminent opening of the first exclusive Tom Dixon shop & café in the Creative Community d3, was announced by super studio, a leader in the furniture and lighting industry in the UAE and the GCC region.

Global Grad Show will showcase thought-provoking projects capable of transforming our future by the world’s next generation of design innovators. The designers of all the projects, will meet for what will become the world’s most diverse design education summit. world. This year, the event will host over 100 brands, divided into 15 categories.

As the commercial centerpiece of dubai design week, Downtown Design provides a

platform for new-to-the-market and iconic design brands.

This year, the fair welcomes 43 new exhibiting brands: 10 regional exhibitors; established brands that return to launch

new collections at the fair; and a curation of artisanal brands under the Italian Trade Agency’s (ITA) second italian luxury interiors Pavilion.

Our mission to create a design hub for the Middle East here in the Emirates shows great potential; we are polarizing the region’s design community and contributing to raising the profile of our city’s design output, both for brands and buyers.

Events like DTD and DXBDW not only attract demand, but they accelerate sustainable growth. For us, it’s crucial to take a considered view on our own development, to create a credible model that will do justice to our design scene, far from the ‘satellite’ models of the ‘big’ shows that simply do not reflect the needs and requirement of their locality.

One way is to balance our established brands with new ‘discovery’ brands that allow visitors to engage with innovative new products. The

Destination initiative for the first time last year presented six co-curated booths in collaboration with emerging Design Weeks from around the world.

And it worked.

Building on the success of last year – we’re continuing to refine the concept in preparation for an even bigger fair next year. If you take the growth of Downtown Design as an indicator, the unequivocal evidence suggests that we’re in an upward trajectory. Not without its bumps – it never is – but the fact that we tripled our footprint last year, sold out by April this year, and will double the size of our buyer programme to include a substantial number of buyers from MENASA and the subcontinent – we’re quietly confident that 2017 will be a stellar year not just for Downtown Design and the Dubai Design Week – but for the whole industry.

What are the highlights of Downtown Design 2016?

This year Downtown Design will exhibit even more new brands than ever before, with many world and regional firsts for the visitor to explore.

We will unveil a new installation created especially for the fair by local architect Tarik Zaharna in collaboration with AHEC, that ties in with the fair’s overall theme of sustainable design.

How the exhibition is included in the Dubai Design Week circuit?

Downtown Design is the commercial centrepiece, and the largest element of the Design Week drawing leading design professionals from the region and beyond.

Our exhibitors are only showcasing alongside their peers, and we work year round to ensure that we are cultivating an active community of the MENASA region’s leading buyers to attend in greater numbers each year. This year we sold out all stands by April, but have made the conscious decision not to expand the fair until next year. It’s vitally important for us to grow sustainably in order to safeguard our concept and maintain a successful position year on year.

What kind of exhibitors will we have to expect?

We will present a mix of established, international iconic names in design with ‘discovery’ brands that have never exhibited outside of their own countries. From Moroso to Made By Sofa, visitors can interact with a range of new contemporary products and concepts across product categories ranging from furniture and lighting to bathrooms and kitchens.

Have the match with D3 played an important role in this growth?

The Dubai Design District is an integral part of the UAE’s design ecosystem and a symbol of the goverment’s commitment to increase the Creative Economy.

Having a focal point for the design industry, that can also accommodate events like Downtown Design and Dubai Design Week, is proving to be a successful strategy in terms of attracting international brands which choose Dubai as a gateway to explore the opportunities presented by the regional market, and as a dynamic environment to establish their business locally.

or the second year in a row, Dubai Design Week returns to Dubai from October 24 to 28.

As the sector’s major exhibition in the Middle East, it confirms Dubai’s role as the design capital of the MENASA region and its status as a centre of global design. More than 150 events will be staged in the dubai design district (D3) – downtown design at first – and throughout the city, involving more than 100 producers from 25 countries. Dubai Design Week is held under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa Bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in strategic partnership with D3 and is being sponsored by the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, the Dubai Design and Fashion Council and Audi.

Snaidero doubles its presence at Dubai Design District thanks to the new showroom in this prestigious district in addition to the one in Downtown Design. On the occasion, the opera industrial kitchen will be presented to the public with its aluminum doors: the solution is ideal for markets like Dubai, attentive and deeply interested in the latest trends such as the Industrial Design.

Designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1949, the wishbone chair has been produced by Carl Hansen & Son ever since and is now regarded as an icon of design. Made up of 14 elements, it is woven with more than 120 metres of paper cord in a production process of more than 100 steps.

This intergalactic dynamic sculpture is made of bright green uranium glass; its spherical black metal base is covered with more than 1500 hand-blown glass elements, individually lit with LED lights.

A cupboard with austere lines, softened by the little feet and the slightly rounded edges. This is gioello (designed by Nikita Bettoni), a sophisticated item of furniture with a special cover in orbital délabré copper, inserts in copper and brushed aluminium and handmade, cast brass handles. The interior is available in polished varnish or natural wood. The front features doors, open shelving and a drawer.

Epoque is complete with “clickclack” pressure discharge drain plus trap and flexible pipe.

The design weeks of addis ababa, barcelona, reykjavik, taiwan and beirut are all housed in the Trade Fair spaces in the Destination collective. Among all the Design Weeks, Beirut’s stand out for its links with the sustainability programme of the MENA Design Research Centre aimed at creating innovative materials by using organic and recycled elements. In addition to the works of T. Barrage and P. Sakr, the exhibition features the collection by Muriel Kai made of fruit skins.

‫منتجات الرشكة ليست للجميع‪ ،‬وذلك يرجع العتالئها قمة موجة العالمات‬ ‫التجارية العاملية يف األثاث ملدة مخسة عقود‪ ،‬وتتميز الرشكة بروح التحدي‪ ،‬فقد قبلت‬ ‫خوض أشد التحديات دون تردد‪ ،‬بل ونجحت يف التغلب عليها مجي ًعا‪ ،‬واآلن حتتفل‬ ‫الرشكة بمسرية مكللة بالنجاحات طوال نصف قرن يف املجال‪ .‬وسيقام االحتفال‬ ‫هبذه املناسبة خالل أسبوع التصميم يف ديب‪ .‬فام هو إذن أرسار نجاحها؟ من أرسار‬ ‫نجاح الرشكة اإلبقاء عىل اهلوية الصلبة املرتبطة باجلذور وباملكان وبتاريخ الرشكة‪،‬‬ ‫وإظهار قدرة فائقة عىل االبتكار املستمر والفهم العميق للتغريات املستمرة التي تطرأ‬ ‫عىل أذواق ومتطلبات العمالء يف مجيع أنحاء العامل ‪ -‬وقد مثل ذلك أطروحة رشكة‬ ‫كيتال طوال تارخيها الطويل والغزير‪ .‬وببساطة أكثر تكمن وصفة الفوز يف املنتجات‬ ‫مع فلسفة اإلنتاج السليمة‪ .‬وقد عرب السيد أليكس ألوردا‪ ،‬نائب رئيس جملس‬ ‫اإلدارة‪ ،‬عن ذلك قائال "نحن ننتج أثا ًثا تعبري ًيا لكل زمان ووظيفة تتوارثه األجيال"‪.‬‬ ‫وأضاف "إننا نؤمن بأن التصميم البد أن يكون مصحوبا بمعاجلة صحيحة‪ ،‬وهذا‬ ‫يعني رضورة وجود توازن توازن سليم بني اإلبداع واألسلوب والقيم"‪.‬‬ ‫بدأت العالمة التجارية يف اكتساب الشهرة يف عام ‪ 1966‬عندما أسس مانويل ألوردا‬ ‫رشكته يف بلفي (يف منطقة تاراغونا بأسبانيا)‪ ،‬كرشكة متخصصة يف منتجات األملنيوم‪،‬‬ ‫ويف أوائل القرن ‪ 21‬استحوذت كيتال عىل رشكتي هوجونيت وترايكامفورت‬ ‫لتأسس بعدها جمموعة كيتال‪ .‬وبعد ذلك وحتى اآلن يعترب األلومنيوم السمة املميزة‬ ‫من املنتجات اخلارجية‪ ،‬وعىل نفس املنوال وألكثر من ‪ 50‬عاما احتفظت الرشكة‬ ‫بطبيعتها األرسية األصلية (وذلك حلرص الرشكة عىل أن يتم التصميم والتصنيع‬ ‫بالكامل يف نفس املدينة الساحلية التي تبعد ‪ 45‬كم من برشلونة‪ ،‬األمر الذي حافظ‬ ‫عىل اجلودة والتخصص منقطع النظري يف منتجاهتا)‪ .‬ما تغري وتطور هو وضع الرشكة‬ ‫بني رشكات التصميم العاملية‪ :‬أوسكار تاسكيتس‪ ،‬باتريشيا أوركوايوال (الذي أعاد‬ ‫اكتشاف األثاث اخلارجي بمجموعة مايا)‪ ،‬جاسرب موريسون‪ ،‬هيال جونجرياس‪،‬‬ ‫رودولفو دوردوين‪ ،‬رونان وإروان بوروليك ودويش ليفيان‪ ،‬وغريها الكثري‪.‬‬ ‫وأضاف "إننا نطور منتجات وليس اجتاهات‪ ،‬لذا فعاميل املتانة واحلداثة من العوامل‬ ‫الرضورية‪ ".‬هذه هي املنهجية االبتكارية‪ ،‬والتي يف منتجات كيتال اخلارجية تعني‬ ‫"البحث يف املواد وأساليب اإلنتاج"‪ .‬ومن األمثلة عىل ذلك الكريس ستامبا الذي‬ ‫صممه األخوان بوروليك والذي يتطلب ستة أساليب خمتلفة يف اإلنتاج‪ ،‬ومن األمثلة‬ ‫أيضا األقمشة ثالثية األبعاد (قرص العسل) من نيدو دايب‪ ،‬وأقمشة األرضيات من‬ ‫ليفيان‪ ،‬والتي تعكس ظالل رقيقة من األلوان يف املناظر الطبيعية‪ .‬فاإلبداع جيعل‬ ‫منتجات كيتال ليست جمرد مثالية جللسات اهلواء الطلق (عقد بنسبة ‪ ،)60٪‬ولكنها‬ ‫أيضا مثالية للجلسات يف األماكن املغلقة‪.‬‬ ‫وقد بنت سمعتها عىل هذه القيم‪ ،‬ومن خالل هذه القيم أيضا تتطلع إىل املستقبل‪.‬‬

t’s not for everyone, riding the crest of a wave for five decades among the top international furniture brands. But it is a challenge that Kettal unhesitatingly accepted and triumphed, and now the company is celebrating half a century in business. This milestone was also celebrated in Dubai during Design Week. So, what’s the secret of success? Retaining a solid identity linked to the roots, the territory and the history of the company; demonstrating a capacity for constant innovation and acute sensitivity to the changing tastes and requirements of an international public - these have undoubtedly been Kettal’s mainstays during its long and prolific history.

More simply, the winning recipe lies in the products, backed up with the correct production philosophy.

“Timeless, functional and expressive furniture that can be passed down from generation to generation,” in the words of Alex Alorda, Vice Chairman. “Design that follows the correct process, that is, the proper balance between creativity, method and values.”

The brand began to gain popularity when, in 1966, Manuel Alorda launched his business in Bellvei (in the province of Tarragona, Spain) specialising in aluminium products: in the early years of the 21st century, Kettal acquired the brands Hugonet and Triconfort, creating the kettal group. Now, as then, aluminium is the distinctive feature of the outdoor products and, similarly, over 50 years, the company has retained its original, family nature (given that the design and production are entirely carried out in the same coastal city 45 km from Barcelona, guaranteeing both the quality and the utmost personalisation).



What has changed and developed is the rapport with the major international names in design: Oscar Tusquets, Patricia Urquiola (who reinvented outdoor furniture with the maia collection), Jasper Morrison, Hella Jongerius, Rodolfo Dordoni, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec and Doshi Levien, and many others. “We develop products, not trends: so their durability and modernity are essential.”

This is the field of the innovative approach, which for Kettal outdoor products means “research into materials and production types”: one example is the stampa chair by the Bouroullec brothers, which required six different production techniques to make, or the 3D fabric nido d’ape (Honeycomb), and Levien’s terrain fabrics, which reflect the subtly shades of colour in the natural panorama. Innovation that makes Kettal creations not only ideal for outdoor settings but also perfect for indoors.

he new Four Seasons Hotel Dubai International Financial Centre has just been inaugurated, an exclusive hotel belonging to the Four Seasons Group in the DIFC pedestrianised zone, the location of international companies, art galleries, stores and some of the best restaurants in the city. With just 106 rooms, of which 28 are suites, the Four Seasons Hotel Dubai departs from the traditional layout of the major luxury hotels in the city and is more like a cosy, intimate private club, a haven designed for relaxation and productivity.

The interiors were the work of Tihany Design of New York, which emphasised an elegant and contemporary style with the warm, encompassing hues of varnished woods with natural nuances. The renowned hotel manager Carlo Stragiotto is at the helm and was previously the manager of the legendary Four Seasons Hotel Milan, where he worked with a team of 200. As well as a sophisticated setting filled with art, the new five star Dubai hotel also guarantees a highly flexible service. The hotel is furnished with a room for work meetings that is open until one o’clock in the morning, where the office can be recreated for the day, with snacks and buffet available. For those who prefer privacy, rooms and suites offer an ergonomic and complete workplace with international connections. Among the other pluses of the new hotel are a Spa and a fitness centre, the Penrose Lounge and the Firebird Diner, a tribute to the iconic American restaurant of the 1950s run by the chef Michael Minà, who offers his reinterpretations of classic American dishes using top quality ingredients. On top of all that, there’s an open air glass swimming pool, the Luna Sky Bar with a terrace overlooking the Dubai skyline and the Churchill Club, which offers enthusiasts a selection of hand-rolled cigars imported from all over the world.

The animated content of Mapping the Burj is artistic in nature and uses a Projection Mapping technique adapted onto the world’s tallest LED screen, the Burj Khalifa.

otel W Dubai transcends and redefines the norms of architecture and design in the city. The building boasts 33 floors and an austere, linear skyline, in stark contrast with the shape of the nearby Beaux-Arts style St. Regis hotel. The new W Dubai will be inaugurated during Downtown Design and will form part of the new Al Habtoor City complex (owned by the Al Habtoor Group), the first fully-integrated urban resort in the Emirate, which extends along the Sheikh Zayed Road and includes the St. Regis. In addition to the two hotels and the adjacent Westin – all of which belong to the Starwood Hotels & Resorts Group – the Al Habtoor City project will also incorporate three residential towers, a water-themed show by the Dragone company and even a canal, the Dubai Water Canal, which is soon to be built. An innovative and welcoming luxury hotel, W Dubai offers high comfort throughout, whether in the form of services or spaces, with a reception desk located on the 30th floor to allow guests to admire the fantastic views while registering at the check-in. Its 365 rooms and suites feature a bold, contemporary design, inspired by the energy and vitality of the Sheikh Zayed Road. Custom furnishings with lights, technology and abstract art with vivid colours define the designs of the open-plan rooms, in which the bathroom and bed area are integrated in a continuous space. The special features of the design of the W Dubai find their utmost expression in the 449 sq m Sensational Suite – centred around a bar with an adjoining Majlis-style living room, DJ booth and kitchenette – and in the Extreme Wow Suite, the presidential suite of the W Brand, which occupies floors 27 and 28, ranging over a total area of 690 sq m, and offers an unobstructed view over Dubai and the Arabian Gulf. The hotel also offers outstanding gastronomy at the Namu restaurant, which serves Japanese and Korean specialities, and the Level Seven, which focuses on Mediterranean flavors.

Equally remarkable are the FIT® fitness centre and the FIT® Bar, which serves detoxifying drinks and healthy snacks.

T

he hospitality industry is growing fast in the Middle East and nowhere more than in Dubai, thanks to the high level of the provision that has become a model for the entire world. It is not by chance that the hotel show is held in Dubai, a perfect showcase for the products and services for hotels, restaurants, bars and catering services that this year was held from September 17th to 19th. The 2017 edition, which will also be staged at the Dubai World Trade Centre, will be a special edition and will be held from September 18 to 20, aimed at sustaining the accelerated growth in the sector in view of Expo 2020.

More than 10,000 visitors are expected.

Ray Tinston, Portfolio Director of DMG Events said: “With more than 10,000 new hotel rooms expected to open every year until 2020, the hospitality industry is one of the most developed in the world here in Dubai. hospitality week will therefore be the definitive platform to do business for all professionals.” In conjunction with The Hotel Show, the DWTC will also be the stage for gulfhost, an exhibition dedicated to catering and dining equipment.

sleep 2016, a global design event for hotels, is to be held from November 22nd to 23rd at London’s Business Design Centre and this year the theme will be: The Science of Tribes. The theme will be interpreted, discussed and re-imagined specifically with regard to hotels during the two days of the exhibition and will be the key element in all the exhibition installations.

The international designers and social scientists who collaborate in Sleep 2016 will seek to transform the way in which hotels and designers think about the spaces in a hotel.

THE SALONE DEL MOBILE GOES TO SHANGHAI

The leading trade fair in the States for design products dedicated to hospitality is called boutique design trade fair and it is holding its 26th edition in New York from November 13th to 15th, 2016.

BDNY, which is staged in NYC’s Javits Center, draws on a large catchment area that includes the eastern United States, Canada and even Europe.
