TEAM PLAY There are institutions, internationally established companies, young explorers who move their firsts steps in the industry.

There are world-renowned designers, but also regional talents who, despite recent history, show an interest and passion for the subject that seems amazing. There is an important amount of workmanship around Dubai Design Week and it becomes evident on the six-day unique event. The uniqueness is dictated, of course, by the cultural and commercial proposal, but it is also the result of an exceptional collaboration and synergy between the organizers of the event: d3 – Dubai Design District –, Downtown Design, Art Dubai Group and the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, just to name a few. It is an assembly line, a collaborative work that involves individuals with the same purpose: to create an exhibition that acts as a platform for meetings and business to place Dubai among ‘design cities’, becoming at the same time a hotbed of local talents and permanent driving force of international design. From this idea derives a huge and varied schedule with over two hundred events unfolding from the heart of d3 and the Downtown Design exhibition to the whole city, involving design and architecture studios, universities and schools, galleries and stores, to talk about all forms of creativity, at different experiential levels.

Dubai Design Week and Downtown Design are as well a model of interaction and sharing, where each unit is not independent but can be considered as a part of a whole, as a good solution to understand the definition of the Creative Community that can find a permanent and official home at d3.

THIS ON-TREND EVENT FOR THE INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMMUNITY CONFIRMS ITS REPUTATION AS THE PERFECT PLACE TO CULTIVATE DESIGN AND CREATIVITY

A

cultural and commercial bridge to the Middle East, the largest and most lucrative design sector in the Middle East and North Africa market and a fertile breeding ground for the design industry, which welcomes and develops international contributions in the fields of architecture, fashion and interiors. It is these attributes that make the United Arab Emirates, and specifically the city of Dubai, the perfect home for an expanding design community encompassing companies, architects, designers and developers from the four main continents of the world.

Dubai Design Week acts as the standard bearer for the city’s new identity, showcasing its attractiveness and innate vitality across a six-day event which takes visitors on a voyage of discovery through the city.

There are over 200 initiatives planned for the third edition of DXBDW, the majority of which are located in the stunning setting of d3 – the new self-proclaimed “home of design”. There are further events taking place in the Al Quoz, Sheikh Zayed Road, Nad Al Sheba, Jumeirah, Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood districts, as well as at Heriot Watt University, International Academic City and the American University in Dubai. «The event we’ve organised is a celebration of the talent and commit-

ment in Dubai and the global interest that has been generated through the past editions of Design Week», explains William Knight, Art Dubai Group’s Head of Design.

The heart of the event – and of d3 – is without doubt the Downtown Design event, now in its fifth edition. Last year, the show attracted over 12,500 visitors, 80% of which came from the trade sector. Now with double the space to accommodate over 150 exhibitors from 25 countries, the 2017 edition will feature 70 new top-level brands and eight design labels making their regional debut.

Complementing Downtown Design is an array of exhibitions ranging from Global Grad Show to Abwab, as well as a number of installations bringing vibrancy to the streets of the district, with works by the likes of Fredrikson Stallard, Paula Zucotti, Khalid Shafar for Lasvit and SUPERFUTUREDESIGN* all on show.

On top of that, there are popups such as the Super Design Market and the Ripe Market and exhibitions like Rado’s Portraits of Design and IKEA’s Let’s Play for Change. And last but not least, a programme of talks and seminars will be given

by Sir David Adjaye, one of the most influential architects in the world, Mauro Porcini, the Chief Design Officer at PepsiCo, and Elmar Mock, the inventor of the Swatch Watch.

ICONIC CITY: CASABLANCA 14 - 18 NOVEMBER GROUND FLOOR, BUILDING 6, D3 This year the annual regional city spotlight is on Casablanca with the exhibition Loading… Casa, curated by Salma Lahlou with Omar Mrani as research assistant: an immersive experience in the city's atmospheres, vitality and history through archive images, sound recordings, a short film, a monumental drawing and contemporary photographs. The event is organised around five themed areas: Transhumance, Mutation, Counter-culture, Amnesiac memory, Hedonism.

DOWNTOWN DESIGN 14 - 17 NOVEMBER WATERFRONT, D3 www.downtowndesign.com The anchor event at Design Week celebrates its fifth edition with a record edition: double the space, 150 brands from 25 countries, 70 new high-level entries from the Region and world, divided into 26 manufacturing categories, all dedicated to contemporary design. The series of live events include appointments with the London duo Fredrikson Stallard, eminent speakers such as Abbie Chung from the studio 5+Design and a conversation with George Fleck (Vice President and Global Brand Management & Marketing at Le Méridien, Renaissance and Westin), Tom Arnel (Managing Director for the hospitality specialist Bull & Roo), and the architects Manit and Sonali Rastogi, from Morphogenesis.

GLOBAL GRAD SHOW 14 - 18 NOVEMBER WATERFRONT EVENT SPACE, D3 www.globalgradshow.com 200 projects, 92 participating universities, 43 nations represented. The 2017 edition of the Global Grad Show in numbers: the biggest exhibition dedicated to innovation, putting interna-

tional design and technology schools into action. The show is curated by the renowned author and designer Brendan McGetrick and showcases an impressive array of prototypes within the fields of Empower, Sustain and Connect. The following are just some of the institutions represented: the Design Academy Eindhoven (The Netherlands), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), the Royal College of Art (UK), and the National University of Singapore.

ABWAB 14 - 18 NOVEMBER ATRIUM, BUILDING 6, D3 A 'door' (the meaning of this Arabic word) onto regional design from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. Originally conceived as an independent pavilion for six MENASA countries, for the first time ever Abwab has expanded its platform, welcoming 45 projects from 15 different markets, meticulously selected by an editorial commission including Joy Mardini, Max Fraser, Sheikha Lateefa bin Rashid and Rawan Kashkoush.

The innovative exhibition facility by the Dubai-based studio Fahed + Architects: meshing interwoven with bed springs visually evokes the ocean's impetuous waves, or a tuft of coral, or a gathering of clouds in the sky.

GRAPHICSRCA: FIFTY YEARS AND BEYOND 14 - 18 NOVEMBER GROUND FLOOR, BUILDING 6, D3 Following its initial inauguration in London, its move to the National Museum of the Republic, in Brasilia, the exhibition GraphicsRCA: Fifty Years and Beyond, has now arrived in Dubai, curated by Teal Triggs, Richard Doust, Jeff Willis and Adrian Shaughnessy. The anniversary of the graphic design course at the Royal College of Art, is heralded as a chance to reflect on both the genesis and future paths for the sector. Previously unseen works from the RCA archives will be on display, as well as Film Society Posters, the magazine Ark, typographic experiments and the earliest pioneering examples of digital design.

ONCE UPON DESIGN: NEW ROUTES FOR ARABIAN HERITAGE 14 - 18 NOVEMBER ATRIUM, BUILDING 6, D3 The heritage of materials and processes embraces contemporary design.

An inspiring leitmotif for all six designs of Once Upon Design: New Routes for Arabian Heritage, a collective curated by Noor Aldabbagh and commissioned by 1971 Design Space since 1971. A group of selected architects, product and graphic designers experiment with elements of traditions from the Arabic peninsular, with extremely original outcomes.

What are the potentialities of UAE market in the field of interior design?

Things have changed markedly in the UAE in terms of what the buyer is demanding. The market has diversified and there is a greater proliferation of mid-market projects including design-led 3 and 4-star hotels.

As the city develops, there are more and more opportunities for versatile interior designers to apply their skills.

This is the 5th edition of Downtown Design: how has the Fair changed from the beginning to today?

Downtown Design has grown by 350% since its first edition, and this year alone has doubled in size. For us though, it has been extremely important to grow sustainably, ensuring that both the quality of the brands and the buyers are maintained. This year we will have 70 new brands, the majority of which are in the lighting, furniture and textile sectors, something that

What kind of opportunities does the Fair offer to those who are looking to grow in the field?

We want to showcase regional talent, but also give confidence to buyers that these designers are able to satisfy commercial requests. Of course, we also love to show diversity, so this year we have regional designers presenting furniture, lighting, tableware, rugs and ceramic tiles. It’s a fantastic mix.

The Italian Pavilion hosts more and more brands...

It will host 17 brands this year, some are returning, some will exhibit for the first time. It will be the third year that we host ICE at the fair, and we’re very happy to continue supporting ITA and the exhibiting brands to reach their target audience here in the Middle East. Our fair uniquely supports brands not only by bringing key decision makers from around the region, but providing multiple opportunities to network, share expertise and build relationships year on year.

Opened in the Dubai Mall, the brandnew Apple store is the product of a collaboration between the Apple design team, led by Jony Ive, and the Foster + Partners studio. The store reinvents the concept of retail, broadening it so it becomes an experience directly connected to urban life.

La Galerie is transformed into a ‘permanent apartment’ where objects and furniture change regularly. This is the concept behind The Apartment #3, an exhibition that brings together works, decorative arts and European design pieces from the 1950s-70s by names such as Mathieu Matégot, Pierre Guariche, Marco Zanuso, Serge Mouille, Charlotte Perriand, Hans Wenger, Joseph-Andre Motte and Pierre Paulin.

After ten years of design and construction, the Louvre Abu Dhabi museum complex is set to open to the public in the Saadiyat Island Cultural District. Commissioned by the Tourism Development & Investment Company, the museum has been designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel and built by HW architecture and Buro Happold Engineer.

Packed with influences from Arab architecture, the museum-on-the-sea is split into a medina made up of 55 square-shaped buildings in white cement, with 23 exhibition galleries standing around a large square, some of which are terraced and some submerged under water. Yet the most spectacular part of the museum complex is the imposing dome-shaped canopy, constituting a contemporary take on another mainstay of the local architecture. With a diameter of 180 metres, a circumference of 565 metres, a maximum height of 40 metres and just four support pillars for 7500 tonnes, the dome – which appears to be “simply” suspended in mid-air – is a highly complex webbed structure comprising four external layers in steel and four internal layers made from

aluminium, separated by a steel frame measuring five metres in height.

The juxtaposition of the various layers creates a geometric pattern with gaps of different dimensions and inclines, allowing the light to filter through and create a network of shadows that evolves as the day progresses.

According to Jean Nouvel, the architectural project “is a tribute to the Arab city, its poetic use of geometry and light. The dome evokes the inescapably fleeting nature of our lives, as well as providing sanctuary for the treasures of the museum”.

The museum’s exhibits, which host over 600 works divided into a 12-chapter route spanning time and themes across different civilisations and cultures, come from the 13 French museums coordinated by the Agence France-Muséums, a partner of the intergovernmental agreement which sees the new museum borrow the name Musée du Louvre for 30 years and six months, a number of temporary exhibitions for 15 years and a collection of works for a decade. The first exhibition, From One Louvre to Another: opening a museum for everyone, will launch on 21 December 2017.

The first Interiors showroom was inaugurated in 1968. How has the supply chain and the furniture market changed since then?

In 1968, the furniture supply to the market was very limited, it started with the importation of furniture from Germany and followed by Denmark. The supply chain at that time was very traditional, suppliers used to visit the UAE with their catalogues, and orders were placed accordingly.

The manufacturing time was long as well as the shipping from Europe.

In addition to that, the communication used to take a very long time making the supply chain a very lengthy procedure. Whereas now the process is much simpler, quicker and much more efficient nowadays leading the whole process takes around 90 days from the time of placing the order until it reaches the UAE. Interiors was among the first companies to start the furniture business in the UAE. So the competition was almost non-existing, and in time furniture showrooms started opening until it reached the curent state where the number is much more than what the demand requires. During those 49 years, many companies opened showrooms and have closed after several years.

How has interior design trends evolved in terms of style and furniture types?

Trends and tastes have changed a lot since we started; our focus when we first opened was only classical furniture and Scandinavian design.

Gold colors and bold design were trendy back then. However, with time we started introducing more contemporary and modern design, which is more prominent these days.

Nevertheless, we still have a wide variety of classical furniture design, to satisfy different tastes and clients’ type. We at Interiors make sure to always stay up to date with the latest trends. We attend worldwide exhibitions, explore new ideas and bring in new suppliers, with a focus on innovation and quality, our furniture collections showcase unique design to suit every style and taste.

What position has Made in Italy in your stores?

We import furniture from manufacturers located in Italy, Spain, USA, and Canada, we also have more than 100 brands. Made in Italy furniture has a very important position in our stores. We are the exclusive distributors of Cornelio Cappellini, Giorgio Collection, Nicoletti, Alf Italia, Interiors showroom in Dubai

Scappini, Seven Sedie and many more including accessories / lighting suppliers like Chiantese, DEKOR TOSCANA… Certainly Made in Italy trademark gives a very positive impact as our customers trust the Italian quality we sell.

Your team is specialized also in interior projects: what are the most important requests received in this sector?

In addition to furniture and accessories, we have a design studio and a fabric department. Our creative team of professional interior designers crafts exclusive concepts tailored around each customer style, including consultation and design proposals, along with offering hand-made curtains, personalized upholstery pieces and an endless selection of fabrics.

Do you handle more contract and hospitality projects or private works? An example of a recent project?

Both private and hospitality projects form an essential part of our business, we have done several projects for palaces and villas for VIP customers. We have also completed 2 projects of furnished apartments, for 205 and 675 apartments respectively during 2017.

Interiors has 6 showrooms: do they aim to different kinds of clients and feature diverse collections?

Interiors showrooms are strategically located around the UAE, and we display a wide range of furniture and accessories to cater to our customers’ needs and tastes. For instance, we display a mix of classical, contemporary and modern design in our main showroom in Abu Dhabi, as for Jumeirah we focus more on the contemporary and modern furniture.

Other showrooms, such as Al Ain, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah have more classical design because these areas have a majority of classicaloriented clients.

Designed by London-based duo Boano Prišmontas and the artist Ricardas Blazukas, this installation tells the story of the Middle East representing an “immaterial city”. Fifty floating spheres (signifying the oil reserves) evoking the foundations of the city but also its weaknesses, anchored to the ground by black “London bricks” .

Not just a simple suspended lamp, but a fully fledged art installation of light. Designed by Massimo Crema and Ermanno Rocchi, Sphere reveals its true nature once illuminated. The finish in hand-blown nuanced metallic glass reveals a to glimpse of the decorative structure of sandblasted spheres inside.

The new version of the CH23 dining chair (designed by Hans J. Wegner) features some of the designer’s distinctive traits: the elegant shape of backrest, the special double-weave seat pad and the arched form of the rear legs and the unusual cross-shaped cover.

Killa Design opens the doors of its offices for Dubai SuperSEEDed, an opportunity to discover the brand’s ethics and philosophy as well as its perception of architecture in Dubai. He has worked with major designers in Australia and in the United Kingdom, and for some years now, he has been working in Dubai

You are a hotel designer, what expectations do you hold for an event such as Downtown Design and Dubai Design Week?

My expectations change yearly of such events as Downtown Design and Dubai Design Week. I am afforded the luxury of being able to contribute to such analysis of the Hospitality and Design Markets, and this year I would expect much reflections on 2018 and the run into Expo. Woods Bagot continues to support such essential events in the design calendar.

The D3 has progressively expanded, some major international architecture firms have opened branches, what do you think of this?

As an architect, I believe the wider community can only benefit from a broader and deeper design talent pool,

engaging within the public realm.

With D3 realizing itself as a defined precinct of design, it is natural to expect such international interests would gravitate to such a facility.

Dubai, as one of the truly acknowledged global cities, benefits from the world’s eye reviewing such fascinating design. The current maturation of the Dubai design market is the result of newly established international architecture firms together with the already present design community, striving to excel on design solutions of previous times.

Made in Italy is always more and more present, what do you think of Italian companies’ approach to design?

Woods Bagot invests a considerable time researching into new materials, supplier ranges and fabrication facilities, such that our clients benefit from the Collective Intelligence of this research. Italian companies are often multi-generational and passionate about their products quality and legacy. We continue to discover and establish new relationships with Italian manufacturing companies on the basis of quality and their desire to compete on a global playing field.

What are your opinions regarding the hospitality market in Dubai and the Gulf?

The hospitality in the gulf continues to change as market forces impact on it. Currently and in the coming 2-3 years we ill be experiencing a

spiked increase in ready-to-market approaches of conversions or refurbishments leading the way of new enquiry. Also new brands continue to enter the market and Woods Bagot’s global portfolio continues to attract such opportunities. We also see the increase of longer stay branded residence projects in the GCC. As residential markets continue to reinvent themselves to maintain market edge, we see more investment influences toward brand equity of lifestyle or luxury and confidence of product quality achieved through branded residences. Projects as Marsa Al Arab portray a fascinating vision given its specific focus to Family Tourism and the leisure precinct around Burj Al Arab. Also the Marsa Al Seef development is interesting given its activation of old and new dubai all along the traditional creek area. Relatively recent openings of both Woods Bagot hotels, Jumeirah’s Al Naseem and Hotel LaVille in Citywalk have also been well received as examples of new Beach Resort design and Europeanscaled urban hotels respectively.

Hospitality projects in the pipeline continue to be fascinatingly diverse typologies from Luxury to Midscale, Libraries to Expo, always seeking reinvention of use through hospitality, context and place making.
