Five years of nautical architecture

n the cusp of its 20th anniversary (set to arrive in April 2026), IFDM celebrates a significant milestone: 10 years of Wonder Book. This journey encompasses 33 international editions, over 750 featured projects, nearly 400 “Wonder Pages,” five spin-off editions tailored for the Chinese market, and, since 2020, a special edition comprehensively covering the nautical world – all presented in its signature Book Style. The .Wonder Book has pioneered an innovative and effective approach to publishing, seamlessly blending content with business objectives. Its consistent focus on what is both “beautiful and useful,” combined with precise and meticulous descriptions of selected projects, has created a compelling mix that immediately satisfied the global design community’s hunger for insightful content. IFDM’s deep understanding of the industry’s fabric, honed over nearly 20 years of travels and interactions, coupled with a curious approach to exploring the depths of project phases, has enabled it to engage as equals with the specification community for both interior design and architecture.

The first Yacht & Cruise edition (as it was known in July 2020, at the outset of its journey) faithfully carried on the legacy of its elder sibling. It launched a concept that beautifully unites boats and dry land, representing the perspective of the seafarer observing new architecture from the sea (ports, docks, piers, and hospitality offerings), and vessels viewed from the coastline. This was an editorial project that boatyards and the broader marine world were unaccustomed to, yet they quickly embraced it, appreciating its unique approach and significant scope. The .Wonder Book Yacht & Cruise has paralleled the profound transformation within the sector, particularly the evolution of its interior design segment, which has welcomed leading names from the residential world. This edition reaffirms its mission and, more importantly, its vision: a world that year after year showcases nextgeneration nautical architecture, alongside hospitality and residential innovations that share, for us, the most crucial of nature’s five elements. The hues of silence

tis Redding penned the initial lines of “(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay” in June 1967 while staying on a houseboat moored in Sausalito, California, as he awaited his next gig. This iconic song concludes with an equally famous fourline verse: “Now, I’m just gonna sit at the dock of the bay, Watching the tide roll away, Sittin’ on the dock of the bay, Wastin’ time.” But is time spent observing the ebb and flow of the sea truly “wasted”?

Or is it a different way of experiencing and imbuing meaning into the time we have? Beyond the allure of slow travel and yachting, beyond a penchant for “creative” idleness, scientific evidence also suggests that observing the sea and being in proximity to water expands the mind. According to the late marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols and his Blue Mind Theory, physical or visual contact with water – especially the ocean – has a regenerative effect on the human mind, reducing stress and fostering creativity by stimulating various brain areas associated with happiness and well-being. Going a step further, blue is often associated with contemplation, harmony, calm, and silence. In many of the projects presented here, including yachts, such as Not a Hotel residences in Japan, the Gundari Resort on the Greek island of Folegandros, the Sjöparken hospitality complex in southern Sweden, Casa Ponte in Florianopolis, Brazil, the French Coquelicot River Barge, and Boathouse Zaka on Lake Bled – to name just a few – one can absorb the hues of slowness, contemplation, and silence. These include the blues, the greens, and the sands, and the osmotic connection between aquatic and vegetal elements; between flora and the terrain; between land and coastline; between nature and the wider landscape; and ultimately, between body (beyond just the architectural) and spirit (beyond just the genius loci).

The hues of the night Next year’s color trends embrace mid-tones and pastel shades, many of which echo the nuances of the night, from dusk to dawn Author: Veronica Orsi

U

nderstanding color trends in advance allows us to anticipate the market, create collections, and design products that align with the aesthetics set to dominate in the coming months. It also stimulates creativity with a recognizable palette that resonates with the public. We discuss this at every editorial installment of the Wonder Book with experts from ColorWorks™ Design and Technology Center – specifically with Senior Designer Roberto Romanin – who provide us with an overview of the trending chromatic universe for the year ahead. “2026,” he tells us, “opens to lighter, more harmonious tones compared to this year’s trends, ushering in an era of balance, luminosity, and fragile optimism. Soft pastels and mid-tones take center stage, gently replacing darker shades. Neutrals, abundant in recent years, are now infused with subtle nuances that maintain their delicate softness while gaining new depth and character. A careful balance emerges between warm and cool tones, with a return of vibrant yellows and purples.” Through the analysis of emerging social movements, ColorWorks™ international experts develop their annual guide, ColorForward™, which associates 20 key colors with future trends, divided into five chromatic stories. Each story narrates an evolution of collective taste, responding to cultural shifts and new consumer desires. ColorForward 2026 thus comprises the stories: Wonderland, Bio-Funk, Viviendo de Noche, and Carnival of Fuels. Wonderland (which we featured in the February Wonder Book edition) identifies the growing search for escapism and comfort, across a multitude of solutions ranging from fantasy genres to collectible games. Carnival of Fuels, on the other hand, tells a more pragmatic story: 20 | IFDM

the search for alternative fuels that will help us meet the growing demand for electricity. Similarly, BioFunk (analyzed in the June Wonder Book) guides us through some extraordinary information technologies for data processing, such as bio-computing.

Now it’s time for Viviendo de Noche, which focuses on the issue of rising temperatures and heatwaves that increasingly force us to adapt daily schedules to different times – a factor that could contribute to the growth of the night-time economy.

THIRD STORY. VIVIENDO DE NOCHE (LIVING AT NIGHT)

Climate change is no longer a future scenario; it’s the present we experience daily through extreme weather events, particularly scorching summers and higherthan-average temperatures everywhere. The primary consequence is evident in the biological rhythms of animals that adapt, and in our daily schedules that slowly begin to shift towards the dark hours. Living at night – Viviendo de Noche, precisely – could thus represent the new normal. Global temperatures are indeed rising, and ecosystems are adapting. How? Diurnal animals, for instance, are starting to hunt at night, driven by the need to avoid excessive heat.

Humans, too, are moving in this direction. In India, for example, schools have postponed start times to protect children from extreme heat. And this is just the beginning. According to some projections, starting from 2026, we could be living in a new era where many social, work, and cultural activities shift to cooler hours. This is not just a climatic adaptation, but also a cultural and infrastructural one. In Northern Europe, heatwaves are catching several countries off guard, as they are unaccustomed to facing high temperatures. This creates the need for emergency plans and the establishment of “climate shelters”: libraries, shopping malls, and air-conditioned indoor public spaces designed to accommodate the most vulnerable segments of the population during the hottest hours. In this extreme situation, many cities are seizing opportunities. The concept of a “night-time economy” is developing, shifting economic activities and related industries into the nocturnal hours. Some cultural ministries, in countries like China and Turkey, are re-adapting historical sites to allow night visits, transforming cultural enjoyment into a new experience. Amsterdam has allocated funds to incentivize start-ups, businesses, and cultural projects that operate after sunset, while

Toronto has officially appointed a “Night Mayor” to coordinate entertainment activities, including those for families, ensuring a completely safe environment.

All of this also impacts tourism. The phenomenon of “coolcation” – a portmanteau of “cool” and “vacation” – represents a new travel style: holidays no longer in the warm Mediterranean breeze, but towards cooler latitudes like Iceland, Canada, or the northern coasts of the United States. Places like Anacortes and Victoria have already been identified as the most promising destinations for 2026. Work too will be affected by this change. The idea of the classic 9-to-5 workday is wavering, making way for flexible formulas and even a return of the siesta, no longer seen as a folkloric custom, but as a survival strategy. “Viviendo de Noche” thus opens a perspective on an increasingly near future, a necessity that could become a resource and a new rebirth. The colors that interpret this story are delicate yet “magical.” There’s a calm pink/orange shade that evokes serenity, just like a sunset. It’s aptly named Crepuscolo (Twilight), reflecting that dreamlike moment marking the transition between day and night. Playing on the phrase “from dusk till dawn,” the color Dust@ dawn represents the first light of sunrise: it’s a neutral tone with undertones of gray, blue, and purple.

It captures the transition from night to day with a warm, golden touch that embodies the hope of this story. Also in the realm of neutrals is Coolifornication, a soft blue that fully conveys the search for cool relief. The intense reality of the story and climate change, however, is concretized in the tones of Simoon: its orangey-red translates into color the heatwaves affecting certain countries. Finally, Nte Spend celebrates the night economy and reclaims the violet color of the night sky, thus celebrating the transition to a world that rediscovers itself at night.

SOUL DESIGN The creative vision of Will Meyer and Gray Davis, the interior design studio at the heart of Manhattan

I

n the bohemian neighborhood of Soho, Manhattan, the studio founded by Will Meyer and Gray Davis has been a benchmark in interior design for over 25 years. Known for blending emotion, elegance, and genius loci, the creative duo brings a contemporary perspective to the heritage of acclaimed names such as Ritz-Carlton, W, Mr. C by Cipriani, Four Seasons, and Baglietto. From luxury hospitality to yachting, from refined New York penthouses to gourmet restaurants, their sensory and experiential vision is expressed through a deep respect for local culture, embodied in the craftsmanship of skilled artisans. Heritage becomes the protagonist – an inspirational source underpinning projects like the W Rome, a true celebration of the Eternal City, or Casa Dragones in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico – a new concept of showroom designed for the tequila brand, combining a tasting room with guest accommodations. Their vision extends to the interior design for the Baglietto superyacht Vesta 56 concept, and for the hybrid-electric motor catamaran Seawolf X by Rossinavi.

Meyer Davis celebrates its 25th anniversary.

How did the studio come to life, and which were the first projects that brought you success in the world of interior design?

Will Meyer. The studio came together pretty organically. Gray and I had been friends for years, and we both worked in New York for designers we respected. At one point, an old college professor asked if we had ever thought about starting our own thing. We hadn’t, but it sparked the idea.

Having worked on a few projects together, we realized we might actually be onto something. That was 1999. Our first few years were spent taking on residential and restaurant projects, and those early jobs shaped how we work. We weren’t focused on building a signature look, we were just interested in making spaces that felt good to be in. Projects like 1 Hotel South Beach helped put us on the map in a more global way. That was a turning point, not only in terms of scale, but in how it confirmed our belief that design can create real emotional impact when it’s grounded in narrative and place.

Private homes, restaurants, hospitality, and yachts: what is the guiding philosophy behind all your projects?

Gray Davis. For us, it always starts with the human experience. Meaning we prioritize emotional resonance and atmosphere just as much as form and function. At the core, we design for how people want to live and feel. How does someone enter space? What are they noticing, sensing, remembering? The goal isn’t to take the obvious route, but to understand the place, the client, the architecture, and build something from there. The best spaces are the ones that reveal themselves over time. We layer and edit until the story feels clear and honest. That’s what makes our work personal.

We’re also big believers in the idea of “intelligent subtraction,” the idea that restraint can be more powerful than excess. Not necessarily minimalism in the traditional sense, but rather designed in a way that feels intentional and true to the space.

Across all sectors, that approach holds true.

How important is the genius loci for you when designing?

WM. It’s very important. We always aim to design something that belongs. That doesn’t mean recreating a place literally, it means capturing its energy and using materials, light, and special flow to honor that. At W Rome for example, the city’s layered materiality really shaped how we approached the interiors. We wanted it to be glamorous and expressive, but also rooted in Rome’s complexity and rhythm. We like to work with local makers whenever we can, and we always take the time to understand the context before we begin. You can feel the difference when a project has been designed with that kind of care. It resonates more deeply.

From W Rome to The Nolitan in New York, from Sorelle restaurants in Charleston to Carna Baha Mar in the Bahamas, and the exclusive Mr. C residences in Miami – if I asked you which project you consider the most emblematic of your style?

WM. W Rome was a project that gave us a unique opportunity to engage with the rich, multi-layered character of the city. Drawing inspiration from Rome’s architecture, art, and vibrant energy, we translated those elements into the interiors through bold color, dynamic patterns, and rhythmic design. My personal home in Oaxaca might be the clearest expression of how I think about design on a more intimate level. It was built with local 26 | IFDM

materials and the skilled craftsmanship of artisans in the area. The home is raw and honest and filled with soul. That kind of place-based design, where every decision is shaped by landscape, light, and culture, is something we carry into all of our work.

GD. For me, the Four Seasons Astir Palace in Athens might be the purest expression of our style. It captures that balance we always aim for.

Where the architecture and interiors quietly support the experience of place. There’s a restraint in the design that lets the environment lead. It’s modern but grounded, luxurious but never loud.

That duality really reflects who we are.

Can you tell us about the underlying inspirations and key design details of the Four Seasons resorts in Cabo del Sol, Mexico, and Papagayo in Costa Rica?

GD. Both projects reflect our belief in restraint and place-based design. In each case, the goal was to create immersive, grounded spaces that feel natural to their surroundings: warm, open, and deeply connected to the environment. At Four Seasons Cabo Del Sol, that meant drawing from the spirit of the Baja Peninsula. We worked with local artisans and used native materials to evoke a sense of texture and familiarity, like walking into a welcoming home. Every space was designed to feel like an organic extension of the landscape. In Papagayo, the same philosophy was guided by Costa Rica’s

lush jungle, coastline, and climate. We leaned into a calm palette and easy, effortless spatial flow to mirror the rhythm of the setting. The result is a strong, seamless connection to the outdoors.

How do you envision the evolution of hospitality over the next 10 years?

GD. The future of hospitality is becoming more personal, intuitive, and human. Guests are looking for deeper connections to the places they visit, not just through design, but through how spaces reflect and support the local culture and environment. At the same time, the line between hospitality and residential design is continuing to blur. Travelers want the comfort and familiarity of home along with the sense of discovery that comes from being somewhere new. Design will need to strike a careful balance between creating environments that are both functional and inspiring, rooted in place yet adaptable to individual needs.

What is your dream project?

GD. We’re increasingly interested in working on more yachts because they offer a unique design challenge and an incredibly rewarding creative process.

In yacht design, every detail must be intentional, seamless, and highly functional, all while maintaining a refined aesthetic. What excites us most is how yachts naturally distill so many of our core design values into a single project: craftsmanship, light, movement, and a deep connection to nature. The constant interplay between interior and exterior, the ever-changing surroundings, and the intimacy of the space create a powerful design opportunity. Whether it’s a fully custom newbuild or a bold conceptual vision, yachts offer the potential to create something truly sculptural, soulful, and unlike anything else.

WM. We would also love to take on another bespoke hospitality project like La Casa Dragones, which offered a rare opportunity to blur the lines between hotel, retail, and bar spaces in a way that felt truly immersive. It was a unique and rewarding experience for our team, allowing us to think holistically about how different types of environments come together to create a cohesive narrative.

What made the project especially meaningful was the chance to collaborate closely with local artisans throughout the Mexico region, bringing an added layer of authenticity and craftsmanship to every detail. Projects like this allow us to explore place-based storytelling through design, and we’re excited by the possibility of doing more work in that spirit.

For just one month or for the whole year The portfolio of Not A Hotel vacation villas features stunning landscapes and architecture, the work of international creatives and designers, high-quality craftsmanship, and Japanese hospitality, all presented through a revisited model of co-ownership

S

ince 2020, Not A Hotel has been pioneering a unique fractional ownership model for living and vacationing, featuring 34 properties across six distinct regions of Japan – from urban centers to oceanfront and mountain retreats. This shared ownership approach allows owners (748 as of February 2025) to acquire access to residences within the Not A Hotel portfolio for periods ranging from a minimum of 30 days to a full year. co-ownership model aligns with the Japanese concept of Mottainai – emphasizing the conscious use of resources and reduced consumption. It meticulously selects sites of significant natural or historical value, often away from mainstream tourist routes, to foster a slower pace of life, deeply immersed in the landscape and encouraging contemplation. Beyond this, the villas themselves are spaces of pure serenity, light, and beauty. They are the result of

collaborations with internationally renowned architects and creatives, including Nigo©, Suppose Design Office, BIG, Masamichi Katayama, Snøhetta, Sou Fujimoto, Aizawa Yosuke, Shin Ohori, and Kundo Koyama. Each designer contributes a unique vision on the interplay between the genius loci and residential architecture. In February 2025, the brand further expanded its collaborations, welcoming Pharrell Williams and NIGO®︎ as both creative advisors and investors. NIGO®︎’s The Nigo House, part of Not A Hotel Tokyo, is currently under construction on the Futtsu coast of Chiba, overlooking Tokyo Bay. Meanwhile, Earth Ishigaki, a residence designed by Sou Fujimoto, and the Toji Villas in Minakami, conceived by Makoto Tanijiri and Ai Yoshida of Suppose Design Office, have been ready for occupancy for several months. The Toji Villas complex comprises five residences, each spanning 252 square meters and accommodating up to 8 guests, complemented by a restaurant. Perched atop a mountain, the location is historically renowned for its hot spring sources fed by the Tone River. Water serves as a fundamental element of the design, gracefully enveloping the dining and living areas. It flows throughout the property, manifesting in various features including an infinity pool, a natural hot spring, and an outdoor cold plunge

pool paired with a sauna. Inside, the second-floor living area, complete with a lounge, dining space, fireplace, and kitchen, features soaring ceilings and opens directly to the landscape. The exposed wooden roof adds to the ambiance, while the space is intentionally kept somewhat subdued to enhance the panoramic views of the Minakami Valley. The lower level houses two bedrooms, a shower room, and private parking. The villas’ two levels are enclosed within a compact, squared volume, echoing traditional Japanese mountain homes. This design is reinterpreted with contemporary construction techniques, such as a wooden roof structure, copper sheet cladding for the roof and facades, and expansive glass openings that seamlessly connect the interior with the exterior. In stark contrast, Earth Ishigaki, operational from July 2025, showcases a completely different architectural volume, conceived by Sou Fujimoto with a playful use of circular geometries. Built on an oceanfront site on Ishigaki Island’s southeastern coast, the villa boasts a round form with a convex green roof that slopes gently towards the ground, appearing almost ‘wedged’ into the coastal landscape.

A circular opening also illuminates the internal courtyard, where a children’s pool forms a nearly perfect circle. The villa effectively ‘disappears’ into its surroundings, allowing the vibrant green of the vegetation and the deep blue of the waters and horizon to take center stage, visible from both the internal courtyard and through the large windows integrated into the pristine white facade. Spanning approximately 1500 square meters across two floors, the residence features a living/dining area with direct access to an infinity pool, an internal garden, and outdoor terraces. It also includes four bedrooms, each with an outdoor soaking tub, a sauna, a cold bath, and a gym. In 2026, two more sites, currently under construction, will further expand the Not A Hotel portfolio: Setouchi on Sakigi Island, featuring three villas – 180, 270, and 360 – with private berths, designed by BIG; and the four Masu residences designed by Masamichi Katayama of Wonderwall in Kitakaruizawa, Gunma Prefecture.

It was conceived to embody the style of total freedom and spontaneity favored by a new generation of owners, free from rigid forms and more inclined to an emotional, instinctive interpretation of life at sea. This emotional expression takes concrete form in the design by Alberto Mancini,

who created the sleek, sculptural exteriors, and by the m2atelier duo, who successfully developed an integrated interior design language deeply rooted in the brand’s DNA. “What we aimed to achieve with m2atelier,” Lantero continues, “was an interior vision where every element is designed to create an emotional resonance. It’s not just about elegance, but about crafting an atmosphere that evolves with its inhabitants, offering an inviting calmness paired with decisive sophistication.

From how materials respond to light to the clarity of spaces and the meticulously detailed design, we are redefining how movement flows within the yacht.” The expertise of specialized artisans was crucial in harmonizing with the element that most guides perception and reveals depth: light.

Thus, throughout the yacht, a choreography of layered geometries and shifting perspectives unfolds, creating a kaleidoscopic architecture – from the meticulous alignment of wood grains to the interplay of light and shadow. a distinct atmosphere,’ confirm Marijana Radovic and Marco Bonelli, co-founders of m2atelier.” A dynamic effect thus pervades the entire yacht, almost readable at a single glance – from the main saloon to the owner’s suite and even extending to the sea. This experience of extreme openness, however, never sacrifices intimacy. The owner’s suite itself transforms into an ensemble of layered transparencies, where glass partitions and vertical elements extend the visual horizon. Even outdoor living achieves new levels of comfort and creativity. The bow deck hosts a recessed pool with integrated chaise lounge and a rotating sunbathing backrest. And the Sky Lounge becomes a retreat ready to transform according to the owner’s rhythms, becoming an informal living area, a media room, or a dining space.

the Pacific coast’s renowned waves. Architect Jorge Hernandez de la Garza designed a series of buildings that foster an intense dialogue between indoor and outdoor spaces. This is achieved through carefully chosen materials like concrete, valued for its thermal properties that keep interiors cool as temperatures rise, alongside raw clay tiles and bricks, and tropical wood. Everything is handcrafted, produced in local workshops, and assembled by local artisans. Clever construction techniques, such as double-height ceilings and the permeable lattice structures of the central courtyard, seamlessly blend indoors and outdoors, perfectly integrating the lobby with street life.

Here, lush tropical vegetation surrounds a spacious pool, creating a natural connection to the local landscape. The designer also designated the panoramic terrace as an essential part of hotel life, nurturing social interaction. Plantea Estudio’s interior design seamlessly integrates into the architectural context, where local culture (including surfing) plays a significant role. feel of the natural environment surrounding the hotel. Custom textiles and screens blend with tropical wood furnishings and doors, all entirely custommade using regional artisanal techniques. This approach is evident in the 39 rooms, including 8 suites, where various levels of privacy are achieved through the use of walls and curtains (with restrooms discreetly positioned separately). The result is a refined yet welcoming ensemble, made even more special by the unique drawings of Mexico City artist Lucio Muniain. Summer 2025 will also see the inauguration of the Beach Club, featuring six private bungalows with ocean views, a beachfront pool, and a sun terrace with loungers and hammocks. Guests can also look forward to a fresh seafood restaurant, inviting them to truly savor the location.

Sensitive dwelling Tetro Arquitetura’s design for the private residence Casa Ponte achieves perfect symbiosis with the wild nature Florianópolis island in Brazil

I

t breathes in unison with the ocean it mirrors and with the vegetation that embraces it.

Casa Ponte seems to have always belonged on Florianópolis island, off Brazil’s southern coast.

Perched on a hill, it extends towards the sea like a natural continuation of the Serra Catarinense mountains, with an architectural expression that transcends its purely residential function. Belo Horizonte-based Tetro Arquitetura drew direct inspiration from the surrounding environment’s unique formation. This included the striking presence of rocks amidst the water, as well as the most imposing of the three bridges connecting the island to the mainland: the Hercílio Luz Bridge. Two beams emerging from the ground and resting on two pillars form the home’s primary structure. Around this IFDM | 45

framework, the bedrooms and common areas unfold, alongside two additional rooms on the lower floor, and the extraordinary cantilevered pool that juts out towards the sea. Within the pool, semi-submerged natural stones echo the region’s geographical contours. The house’s orientation, carefully planned to face West, offers privileged views that capitalize on the scenic beauty, creating a magical atmosphere that shifts with the progression of the day. The living volume, bathed in light, is shielded by generous structural steel eaves. These are the result of precise solar incidence calculations and, once again,

pay homage to the bridge that became a symbol of Florianópolis since its construction. Perforated metal sheets, also used for the bridge’s flooring and balconies, are part of the cohesive whole pursued by the architects. “Understanding the raw space is the foundation of architecture,” they explain. “It is the pillar that guides creation, simultaneously a limiting factor and a rare opportunity. A creative void to be filled and opened, a struggle of pure will against the terrain, the surroundings, and sometimes against nature itself.” If Casa Ponte’s exterior captivates, its interiors are equally striking. The vintage pieces furnishing them are by renowned Brazilian designers like Jean Gillon, Sergio Rodrigues, and Jorge Zalszupin. The owners acquired these at bargain prices at public auctions in Brasília, where their true value went unrecognized. Restored to their former splendor, they now contribute to the unique charm of life at Casa Ponte.

Technology meets design An innovative catamaran with futuristic lines, Seawolf X embodies Rossinavi’s sustainable BluE philosophy. This ambitious project introduces cutting-edge technology, including artificial intelligence

I

t looks like a spaceship from another planet, and its name, Seawolf X, hints at its profound connection to the sea. What isn’t immediately apparent is the sheer innovation it carries within. The M/Y Seawolf X is a hybridelectric motor catamaran, a true representation of Rossinavi’s BluE sustainable vision. For years, the Tuscan shipyard has dedicated resources to developing hybrid-electric yachts, capable of 100% electric navigation (or 80% for transatlantic voyages). The inspiration for this approach comes from phytoplankton, which stores sunlight to produce energy and bioluminescence.

Similarly, Rossinavi’s BluE yachts absorb solar energy throughout the day, converting it into power using photovoltaic technology. When moored, Seawolf X minimizes energy consumption, even returning surplus power generated by its systems back to the dock – it can, in fact, supply an entire villa with electricity. Two onboard diesel generators quickly recharge the batteries in just a few hours, ensuring ample power reserves. But there’s more. Seawolf X operates with Rossinavi AI, a proprietary artificial intelligence system developed by the shipyard. This system constantly monitors and analyzes the yacht’s operations, anticipating guests’ needs onboard.

The AI then interacts with the crew, suggesting behaviors for more conscious and efficient navigation. The design is equally innovative: Seawolf X boasts a sleek, low-profile silhouette reminiscent of a sports car. The project is the work of Fulvio De Simoni, a renowned yacht designer known for infusing innovation, often drawing inspiration from automotive design. Three distinct outdoor living areas are featured: a generous 130-squaremeter sundeck (with an impressive 202 integrated solar panels!), a striking forward area with a hidden pool and convertible home theater, and an aft cockpit with a beach club. This beach club connects seamlessly with the onboard zones, creating a sea-level oasis for relaxation, complete with a pool and sauna. Inside, an expansive 80-squaremeter living area welcomes guests, offering a versatile space divided into convivial and dining zones. The owner’s cabin spans 70 square meters: a luxurious main-deck sanctuary, illuminated by a large skylight and featuring a walk-in closet IFDM | 53

and private gym. Private access leads to an outdoor area that can serve as an exclusive terrace or a covered mooring zone, complete with a separate crew path. The refined, timeless interiors exude a residential atmosphere with a distinct Scandinavian influence. They feature a neutral, calm palette, embodying discreet luxury and reflecting the client’s vision and commitment to sustainability. American multidisciplinary studio Meyer Davis, responsible for the interior design, utilized brushed wood panels, woven raffia wall coverings, and recycled wool carpets to create an eco-friendly luxury space, perfectly aligned with the owner’s aesthetic sensibility. These choices also successfully combine comfort, luxury, and functionality.

ntamed, rugged, and authentic, Folegandros welcomes a hotel designed to echo its spirit, offering guests the privilege of truly understanding its soul. Gundari Resort draws on the island’s essence, character, and colors, translating them into an architectural narrative that is both powerful and “silent.” The design approach leans towards mimesis between the built environment and the natural landscape, with precise attention to material selection, forms, and chromatic nuances, all playing a role in a constant, sustainability-driven dialogue with the land. “One of the primary strategies involved recycling natural stone and gravel from the site itself for reuse in the construction process,” state the architects at Block722. “Materials such as marble, wood and clay were selected for their aesthetic and cultural significance, as well as for their durability and low environmental impact, thereby reducing reliance on imported materials.” The resort’s unit proportions are carefully calibrated to align with those of the island’s villages, thus IFDM | 57

avoiding a disproportionate scale relative to the local fabric, while simultaneously offering guests an experience of comfort and privacy. The complex, formed by a sequence of small, stone-clad volumes, traces a gentle, undulating path across the terrain, seemingly following its natural morphology, at times disappearing from view. This is where the subterranean part of the intimate hotel is located, comprising several suites that, though hidden, open towards the sea with expansive glass walls to embrace its movements and hues.

Within this concealed and intimate setting, the spa also resides, akin to a sanctuary that dissolves daily distractions, allowing for a profound, timeless harmony between human and nature, fostering a sense of well-being and self-reconciliation.

The restaurant and bar, perched in a panoramic position, take on the appearance of a small piazza dedicated to gathering and conviviality.

visual experience and creating a pervasive feeling of being truly at water level. With solid vertical surfaces at a minimum, the ceiling and floor become dominant design elements, each meticulously crafted. The ceiling – subtly lowered for greater depth – features polished bronze undulating patterns that mirror the river’s ripples, alongside an acoustic slatted system upholstered in deep blue velvet, subtly swaying with the boat’s motion. The floor, meanwhile, boasts impactful coverings, from striking checkerboard patterns to intricate mosaics. Color, in general, plays a pivotal role in enveloping guests within the perception of the water’s movement and the shifting light. Applied to materials, they form a blend the design studio affectionately terms “funky chic.” Beyond traditional nautical hues of blue, teak, and reddish-yellow, the palette expands to include warm pinks and terracotta carpets, peach-toned threedimensional fabric panels, and clear grey glass.

and silver, complemented by all the subtle variations of metallic decorative finishes and marble surfaces. Even River Diva’s main structure is adorned with large LED panels and gold leaf.

However, it’s in the bathrooms that creativity truly takes flight, with exceptional attention to detail. As Eszter Radnoczy, the studio’s founder, explains: “In the boat’s hull, below the waterline, guests shouldn’t feel confined; quite the opposite, it should be an enjoyable experience.” Here, hues transition from pinks and peaches for women’s facilities to greens for men’s, with wallpaperclad panels and doors complementing vibrant sinks. Yet, the true star, especially during warmer months, is the open-air terrace/deck. A brown and cream houndstooth-like pattern, combined with metallic furniture, subtly evokes the Danube’s incessant flow.

The project’s essence lies in fostering communion with nature, illustrating a symbiotic bond that begins with the natural landscape and extends to embrace both the human experience and the architecture accommodating it. Here, the built environment appears to emerge organically from the earth, speaking the material and chromatic language of the trees, the fluid movement of the lake waters, and the intangible presence of light. Nature itself molds the architecture, giving it voice and form, allowing it to become its perfect echo. As Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen of Norm Architects explains, “The project is all about balance. The most intimate aspect of this nature-immersed experience unfolds within the rooms, arranged around a central water feature that serves as a fluid connecting space.

The architecture, with its expansive glass walls, transforms into a warm, inviting vessel that frames a continuous sequence of diverse natural scenes. In this narrative, the rooms evoke the hidden hollows often found within tree trunks, offering secret nests and shelters. For an unmediated, truly immersive connection, each room boasts a private plunge pool, discreetly nestled just beneath the lake’s surface.

Within the villas, the resonance with nature is so profound that any elaborate decoration becomes unnecessary. With oak-clad walls, dolomitic lime ceilings, and natural fiber textiles, the environment inherently possesses its own ‘texture’ – essential yet rich in tactile and visual allure. And then there is light, an immaterial substance that, filtered through meticulously designed apertures, reveals its every nuance according to the sun’s angle. AN OSMOTIC APPROACH In his office in Parma, Christian Grande tells us about his journey as a designer and a method based on the transfer of ideas, stimuli, and experiences from one design field to another

“I

’ve always had an insatiable fascination with objects, mechanics, cars, and boats – ever since I was a child, I’d draw boats and cars everywhere.” For Christian Grande, this early innate passion quickly transformed into talent and professional commitment in the nautical design sector, where, over the years, he has built a highly credible profile and creative vision, solidifying close collaborations with brands like Cranchi, Invictus, and Sacs. But during the same years, he also ventured beyond yacht design, undertaking projects for private residences and hospitality, such as the Grand Hotel Castrocaro, the Via Roma by Cracco restaurant, the Lucid Club in Milan, or the Ca Beba complex currently under construction in Boavista, Cape Verde. This multidisciplinary and versatile design capability is made possible by the continuous osmosis between different fields and stimuli: “a migration of knowledge that is extremely valuable for us; it gives us a significant degree of freedom.” And also by an irresistible inclination for drawing and sketching, “a brainstorming phase with myself.”

How would you tell the story of your studio?

I’ve always had an insatiable fascination with objects, mechanics, cars, and boats – ever since I was a child, I’d draw boats and cars everywhere. My passion was automotive design, and I went on to study car design in Modena, where I was eventually even offered a teaching position. My thesis involved designing a new range of two small boats, a 19-foot and a 21-foot model, a project that was sea-tested for Sessa Marine. I opened my first studio in Milan, and for nine years, 80 to 90 percent of my work was in nautical and product design, as other opportunities arose after Sessa Marine.

Later, I moved my studio back to Parma. The chance to work on residential interiors eventually came along, and today we design resorts, villas, and hospitality projects for clients both within and beyond the nautical world. We’re also focusing on products functional to boats, such as hidden steering wheels and cleats, as well as lifestyle products. The studio currently has 18 staff, along with external collaborators, and we are growing with many ongoing projects.

What is your design methodology?

Sometimes, our idea for a product emerges spontaneously. Other times, we begin by aligning on the brand’s strategy with the client. This allows us to contribute a less ‘contaminated’ vision, offering a fresh perspective to complement the company’s outlook, and sometimes challenging established ways of thinking or habits. This collaborative approach is enhanced by our diverse activities across various fields. This isn’t just about the product, materials, vision, or understanding different target markets, but about the strategy itself, because we understand the market dynamics. This “migration” of knowledge, stemming from the studio’s multidisciplinary nature, is incredibly valuable to us and grants us a significant degree of freedom, which is earned through client trust.

And what is your main strength?

The distinct style for each project is our core characteristic, something that has evolved from our extensive experience in both the industrial

and nautical sectors. It’s crucial to understand who the client is, what they want to express, and whether the project primarily represents their identity or a specific function. Some brands convey pure function, others a family ethos, others ego. These are more or less pronounced expressions of different meanings, and we need to precisely understand our scope as designers. Our aim is not to impose our style too heavily, but rather to adapt it as a thought process, not a rigid visual signature. The risk is otherwise to distort a brand’s identity when our role should be to serve it.

What’s your relationship with the blank page?

It’s more like the terrible relationship the blank page has with me… because it never stays blank!

I adore hand drawing. While for some it’s a form of technical definition, for me, it’s a pure language.

Inspiration often comes from there; for instance, if I need to imagine a boat, it’s easier to start on a piece of paper, even a paper napkin at the table, with a free mind and no specific request. That’s how ideas develop, and I then transfer them to whatever project I’m working on. They are notes I have in my head that get translated onto the paper, a back-and-forth of thought that guides the drawing, a kind of brainstorming session with myself.

And for interior design, what’s your starting point?

If I’m designing the interior of a building, with perceptions so expansive they’re hard to draw, I start by imagining specific areas, focusing on distinct views to generate the right impressions. Sometimes the idea might come from color; if color is dominant, the drawing and form take a back seat, because they shouldn’t overwhelm the color. For example, we recently completed an apartment in Milan where we played with an all-white scheme. We wanted to achieve a sense of “non-modernity” where the white intentionally conveys a classic approach. It’s a white where everything architectural, decorative, or plasterwork speaks of history and elegance, with the artwork and the space as the protagonists.

Speaking of classicism, even the use of marble on boats is a reinterpretation.

I enjoy experimenting, combining values as if in a laboratory – what feeling can a modern product evoke with attributes, finishes, and materials from the past? An ‘eternal’ material on a fast boat, where I want to emphasize timelessness. For instance, with the use of Versilys marble on an Invictus, I wanted to reflect on today’s perception of speed against the timeless stillness of marble, reinterpreting it artistically, like a scratch inspired by the fast wave beneath the boat.

In the residential project in Boavista, the juxtaposition is instead between modernity and the natural context.

Exactly, placing modernity next to an exotic landscape isn’t simple. In a contemporary, almost urban beachfront building, the responsibility to create impact is high, so the choice fell on using natural materials for finishes and furnishings. Green walls, boiseries with raw materials, all with the intention of blending the architecture into the site as much as possible.

The project for the Grand Hotel Castrocaro also reinterprets the past in a modern key.

We worked on the original Art Deco-style project, giving significant prominence to the color green, directly inspired by the thermal waters, which are an intense green hue. This tone is echoed by the palm and olive park, the Verde Serpentino marble – used rough-cut on walls, polished on portals, and matte on the floor – and the green linen wallpaper. Different treatments bring out varying intensities of color and atmosphere.

n the yachting world, where performance and style are in constant pursuit, Mangusta has forged this perfect and measured balance, revolutionizing pleasure boating from its very inception. This year, the shipyard commemorates 40 years of audacious navigation, relentless innovation, and an aesthetic that has set industry standards for its ability to combine power and comfort on the water. Founded in 1985 in Viareggio by Giuseppe Balducci, the Overmarine Group stands today as one of the most authoritative players in global nautical excellence, leading the construction of Maxi Open yachts under the Mangusta brand since the early 1990s. The decision to name the product line “Mangusta” (Mongoose) carried clear symbolic

weight – referencing the only animal capable of confronting and defeating a cobra, specifically the namesake line of Tecnomarine, which was a benchmark brand for fast open yachts at the time. Thus, since the 1990s, Mangusta has become synonymous with a radical vision, a challenge driven by speed and design, evolving into an international reference point for the creation of Maxi Open yachts. The turning point and materialization of this ideal came in 1991, when the shipyard launched the Mangusta 80 Open.

This unique 24-meter-plus sport yacht offered owners a vessel with a dynamic silhouette, a top speed of over 40 knots, and generous living spaces below deck. Until then, open yachts had never reached a length of 80 feet, and, crucially,

those seeking fast, sporty boats had to accept compromises in terms of space and liveability.

The Mangusta 80 changed the rules, presenting itself as a large, high-performance, ultracomfortable sport yacht, thereby introducing the concept of the Maxi Open. Designed by Stefano Righini, it was a resounding success, confirmed by the production of 75 units. Crucial to the brand’s evolution was its intensive research and development dedicated to building large composite hulls – yachts with the structural qualities required to propel them at high speeds in absolute safety and maximum comfort. This was also bolstered by Effebi, a company within the Overmarine Group also owned by the Balducci family, specializing in the production of composite military vessels. Over the years, this expertise in large composite fabrication led to increasingly significant achievements, pushing the brand to innovate in open yachts exceeding 50 meters in length. Once again, collaboration with Stefano Righini marked a decisive turning point. Following the success of iconic models like the Mangusta 92, 108, and 130, the Mangusta 165 was born: a maxi open that pushed the concept of speed and elegance to the extreme, reaching speeds of 38–40 knots. Since then, innovations have been continuous and constant, partly thanks to the construction of the new Pisa shipyard. Spanning 22,000 square meters, this facility allows for the simultaneous construction of multiple units, thus bringing the brand closer to displacement vessels. In 2016, another revolution took place with the Mangusta Oceano 42,

has developed three distinct product lines: - Maxi Open REV: This line comprises traditional Mangusta models, evolved over time to be classic Mediterranean yachts, combining exhilarating performance and supreme comfort.

- Mangusta Oceano: The line of long-range displacement vessels, offering extremely high efficiency and expansive interior and exterior spaces.

- Mangusta GranSport: A line based on the “fast displacement” naval platform, featuring yachts from 33 to 67 meters capable of high performance in displacement navigation mode, but also able to achieve higher speeds while ensuring absolute style and comfort. Today, Mangusta celebrates 40 years of history: four decades during which the shipyard has brought over 320 vessels to life, including more than 130 powered

a result of the collaboration with designer Alberto Mancini. This 42-meter steel and aluminum yacht is part of the new long-range Mangusta Oceano line. And further, the Mangusta 104 REV and Mangusta 165 REV emerged as emblematic models of the new generation of open yachts designed by Igor Lobanov, who reimagined the brand’s classic lines for a contemporary aesthetic. This was achieved through expansive windows perfectly integrated into the yacht’s profile. Another record was set in 2018 with the launch of the Mangusta GranSport 54 El Leon, the first Mangusta to have crossed oceans on a three-and-a-half-year circumnavigation, covering over 50,000 miles. To accommodate new ways of experiencing the sea, the shipyard

by waterjet propulsion and over 20 crafted from metal, demonstrating increasingly refined design versatility. 2025 marks the beginning of significant new milestones: 26 vessels currently under construction, ranging from 32 to 54 meters, just some of the figures that illustrate solid and consistent growth. These achievements stem from Mangusta’s unwavering consistency in pursuing its vision year after year: “The solid roots of the past are the best guarantee for growing a valuable future.” This principle guides the shipyard, now led by the third generation of the founding family, still at the helm of the company’s operations. It’s a family spirit that has never stopped looking to the future: innovating with respect, evolving without ever betraying its origins.

This is truly unprecedented on a yacht of this size! To realize the vision of this owner, who already owned a 50-meter Tankoa, the shipyard once again enlisted the expertise of Francesco Paszkowski Design.

They successfully created a timeless and elegant mood, achieving great harmony between the exteriors and interiors, the latter realized in collaboration with Margherita Casprini. Diamond Binta perfectly embodies current superyacht trends, featuring a panoramic gym on the upper deck, the owner’s suite on the main deck, a garage for a 9-meter limousine tender, and a helipad on the sundeck. The expansive aft beach club, which opens fully to the sea, includes a stunning indoor relaxation area and a glass-walled spa. This space feels cool and bright when the side terraces and transom door are open, further enhanced by a skylight on the main deck that increases its luminosity. views everywhere. The interiors are designed for serenity and tranquility. The color palette, from the main living area throughout the yacht, ranges from dove gray to more intense tones. Oak wood is prevalent, used with various finishes: striped, polished, brushed, and dark brown with a distinctive texture for the tatami flooring. Precious materials like leather, metal, and glass are incorporated, enriching the decor, while marble surfaces (Cappuccino in coffee tables, Calacatta in corridors, Botticino in dining room floors, and Fior di Bosco in bathrooms) add touches of charm. Almost all the furnishings on board are custom-designed; these are paired with selected pieces from the best Italian design brands, such as armchairs, dining tables, and chairs by Minotti (furnishing the main and upper deck living areas, as well as the owner’s suite) or Poltrona Frau stools used in the galley. The galley itself represents another of the owner’s passions, designed for both crew operation and the owner’s personal use. Meticulous lighting design, also by Francesco Paszkowski, highlights the furniture’s soft, rounded forms and enhances intimate atmospheres.

Their JNcQUOI brand quickly expanded beyond the capital, reaching Comporta, an oceanic oasis in the south of the country, with a beach club, a restaurant, a suite, a series of villas, and a hotel complex. Surrounded by white sand dunes, green pine forests, and the Atlantic blue of Praia do Pego, the JNcQUOI Beach Club was designed by Vincent Van Duysen, drawing inspiration from the historical context of the place, long inhabited by fishermen and imbued with a sense of simplicity. A striking wooden deck forms the entrance and leads to

areas crafted from a series of understated materials: reeds, stained wood, rushes, and soft fabrics providing shade for the perimeter lounge and dining areas. Meanwhile, the interiors become more vibrant with white wood-clad walls, reed ceilings, and accents of terracotta and blue hues that infuse energy into the space. The designer applied meticulous attention to detail, from the bicycle parking to the lifeguard station, from the beach cabanas to the furnishings: everything custommade. Turning inland, the JNcQUOI Deli Comporta restaurant, beyond delighting the palate with Chef Jerónimo Ferreira’s cuisine, is designed to be enjoyed at different times of the day thanks to two outdoor areas, a terrace, a covered patio, and a main dining room for 43 people. The Belgian studio JP Demeyer & Co. made the counter the design focal point, surrounded by references to Portuguese culture, such as Viúva Lamego tiles, curtains made by the ‘A Avó Veio Trabalhar’

Directly above the restaurant, with a completely private access, a suite accommodates up to 5 guests and, also curated by JP Demeyer & Co., reflects the venue’s spirit with a sophisticated yet always relaxed and informal taste, characterized by tones of blue, yellow, and bordeaux. The JNcQUOI Club, a true refuge nestled in a protected reserve that includes 64 private villas and a 34-suite hotel, is set to be completed in 2028.

This gem will offer 5-star services, including inhouse butlers and 1 km of private beach, which Vincent Van Duysen has once again masterfully integrated into the wild landscape. Pigmented concrete structures with a horizontal layout, designed not to alter the visual lines of the coast, are paired with green roofs, planted with native herbs.

Meanwhile, terracotta tiles, along with the use of wood and cork, establish a strong connection with the Alentejo culture.

It was with this philosophy in mind that the designers conceived this vessel for Belmond, a leader in luxury hospital-

ity. The project’s inspiration is deeply rooted in nature and the landscape, particularly the undulating profiles of the hills adorned with rows of vines. The approach taken was to weave a delicate dialogue between the interior and exterior, ensuring the former echoed the latter. territory, as if carrying its very essence into the three en-suite cabins, the saloon, the bar, and onto the deck. The green of trees and vineyards, the earthy browns of the soil, and the light tones of reeds and occasional riverbank rocks form the color palette from which Humbert & Poyet drew to “paint” a setting designed to capture the nuances of the views visible during navigation. The barge’s name itself, Coquelicot (French for poppy), refers to the poppies that abundantly dot the region’s fields, subtly referenced in the red marble side tables found in the saloon. The deliberate choice of natural materials such as walnut and oak wood, marble, rope, and raffia further reinforces the designers’ intention.

Everywhere, there’s a subtle reference and reinterpretation of Art Deco design codes, as seen in the master suite where mosaic art takes center stage, or in the saloon where the stained-glass ceiling recalls the warm colors of the landscape, creating a kaleidoscope of hues that testifies to the dynamic interplay of light. All furnishings were custom-designed and crafted by local artisans.

eparting from its Parisian sibling on Avenue Montaigne, Manko Athens seamlessly adapts to the vibrant beach life of Glyfada, near Athens. Owned by the luxury brand One&Only, the Manko Athens restaurant and beach club celebrates rich Peruvian cuisine – a dynamic fusion of ancient Andean culture and Amazonian exuberance with European, Japanese, Chinese, and African influences – set against the backdrop of Greece’s elegant southeastern coast. In an area steeped in archaeological heritage, MVP Architects’ careful integration of the architecture onto the site demanded continuous adaptation as excavations uncovered new discoveries. This fostered an ongoing, respectful dialogue with both history and the lush surrounding vegetation. The result is a structure spanning six distinct yet interconnected zones: the entrance, marked

by monumental wooden doors and a symbolic arch, conceived as a threshold between different worlds; the VIP area, with private cabanas, a bar, and a pool, serving as a sophisticated transition to the DJ area and nightlife; the main restaurant, including the central bar, a space that fluidly transforms from a vibrant beachfront dining spot by day to a festive evening atmosphere; the main pool, encircled by a dedicated dining area; and the beach deck, offering direct sea access. The architects aimed to create expansive open spaces while meticulously preserving a sense of intimacy. This commitment is evident in the detailed lighting design, crafted to guide the transition from day to night, and in the acoustics, where sound absorption is discreetly yet precisely integrated. who skillfully integrated Peruvian tradition with the local environment. This begins with the materials: woven straw, patinated woods, local stones, and warm metals forge a language that is both tactile and visual.

Woven straw-clad ceilings diffuse natural light, while custom-made golden accents capture sunlight by day and subtly transform the space at night. Everywhere, elements are both functional and visually striking.

For instance, the entrance walls, marking the threshold, are composed of colorful, knotted ropes inspired

by Inca patterns. Or the pools, which contribute to structuring the space, reflecting light and adding fluidity to the layout. Furthermore, the monumental arch, conceived as a welcoming gesture, serves as a landmark and sets the tone for the entire experience.

All furnishings were custom-designed by Bureau Lacroix and meticulously crafted by local artisans.

“This allowed us to control the narrative down to the minutest detail,” they explain, “from the graceful curve of a chair’s backrest to the exquisite texture of the fabrics, infusing Manko’s distinct identity into every single aspect.”

At the island’s roots The roots of the nature surrounding the architecture, and the cultural heritage of Menorca’s history and pace of life. This was the starting point for the transformation project of hotel rural Sant Ignasi, a magical and harmonious place, a tribute to the island and slow tourism

H

otel rural Sant Ignasi, identified by license number ACR001, holds the distinction of being the first rural hotel on Menorca, having opened in 1998. It represents a second life for what was originally a holiday retreat for a Menorcan aristocratic family – a traditional finca nestled in nature and woodlands, built in 1777 just a few kilometers from Ciutadela. The property’s story took a new turn in 2022 when, after years of disuse, it was acquired by Juana Vilafranca. It was then completely renovated and reopened in 2024, with the aim of revitalizing the space and recapturing the essence of both the

original residence and the island itself. This narrative also includes the centuries-old trees that are integral to both the property and the project, forming a rich, natural canopy over the large patio of the Smoix restaurant and around the pool perimeter. Majestic, protective holm oaks offer solace from both the sun and everyday worries. The transition from the woodland to the two buildings housing 19 rooms and 6 suites is facilitated by an extensive garden, newly designed by sculptor and landscape artist Álvaro de la Rosa Maura. He carefully selected and arranged a fragrant, multifaceted “mosaic” of species native to Menorca.

The authenticity sought by the owner, who personally oversaw the hotel’s transformation project alongside a team of designers and artisans, is evident in the native plants, natural and local materials, exquisite craftsmanship, and the island’s ‘poc a poc’ (little by little) pace of life – “the best definition to describe its lifestyle: slow, calm and in deep harmony with its surroundings.” This commitment translates into the luxury of slowness, expansive private and communal spaces, bright and luminous atmospheres, and outdoor areas that seamlessly extend the rooms into the garden. The interior decor features understated yet elegant pieces, essential masonry structures, meticulous attention to detail and objects, and organic materials in soft, earthy tones. Examples include the Balearic Marés stone, olive wood for seating, hand-woven fig fiber for bed headboards, wheel-thrown clay, and natural fibers for lamps. Every element contributes to shaping and enhancing a refined hospitality project, carefully designed to offer a connection with nature and the built environment, an immersion in a magical and harmonious place. It is a true tribute to Menorca.

Two versions are offered: The ‘Cool’ version, fresh and bright, features pearl burr wood, matte slate black, beige suede, and Econyl flooring with a lunar sheen.

In contrast, ‘Smooth’ offers a warmer ambiance, with tawny mahogany adding depth and intimacy. In both cases, the sensory quality of the spaces truly takes center stage. The standard layout includes three cabins, all with private bathrooms: the owner’s suite and a twin cabin aft, and the VIP cabin forward, with a double-access bathroom that can also serve as a dayhead. The heart of onboard life is the central dinette, conceived as an open-plan space with an Americanstyle galley and a large convertible table. This convivial and versatile area is thoughtfully designed for informal gatherings without compromising on dramatic detailing. Elegance extends to technical solutions: lacquered slatted ceilings seamlessly integrate systems and lighting with formal lightness; the track lighting system sculpts the space without intruding; and the

use of satin metals and burnished copper introduces a contemporary, yet understated, note. From a functional standpoint too, the VanDutch 75 offers refined solutions that combine aesthetics and practicality.

Among these, an integrated door in the windshield ensures smooth, direct access between the cockpit and bow, while the concealed anchor only reveals itself when needed, preserving the purity of the lines.

The natural teak deck, offered for the first time with white caulking, completes the picture – a novel detail that underscores the pursuit of understated elegance, perfectly aligned with the VanDutch spirit. Every element – such as the luminous porthole that enlivens the bulwarks with a decorative touch – contributes to defining a new range identity. This design vocabulary will be carried forward into future VanDutch models, starting with this 75-footer, which establishes itself as a manifesto for a new, fluid, and bespoke elegance.

he Bvlgari Resort Dubai stands as an urban luxury oasis on the exclusive man-made island of Jumeira Bay. Connected to downtown Dubai by a 300-meter bridge, it provides an experience of serene exclusivity while maintaining strategic proximity to the vibrant metropolis. This property, Bvlgari’s first of its kind in terms of scale and scope, was conceived by the Italian architectural firm ACPV Architects Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel.

True to their established approach, the architects imbued a distinctly Italian style, drawing inspiration from the vintage aesthetics of the 1930s. A meticulous selection of raw materials sculpts every detail, resulting in a harmonious integration of traditional design and contemporary architecture.

Enriched with subtle Middle Eastern touches, the resort evokes the charm of a Mediterranean village. Among the diverse gastronomic offerings at the Bvlgari Resort Dubai – which include Il Ristorante Niko Romito, Hoseki, Il Caffe, and La Spiaggia – the recently renovated Bvlgari Yacht Club Restaurant stands out. Strategically located at the far end of the Marina, it is easily accessible via a pleasant stroll from the hotel’s main entrance, with a dedicated driver service also available for guests. Its privileged position offers expansive, captivating views of the 50-boat harbor and the Dubai skyline, making the striking setting an integral part of the culinary experience. The restaurant’s design faithfully interprets IFDM | 115

a vintage nautical theme, aiming to recreate the distinctive ambiance of a coastal village. The interiors received meticulous attention to maritimeinspired architectural details. The flooring features an elegant timber walkway reminiscent of a sailboat deck, complemented by chrome parapets evoking naval ‘guardrails’. Cream-leather seating echoes the furnishings of Riva yachts, while crafted teak floorboards faithfully reproduce ship decks. The custom-designed bar is crowned by an imposing, light-amplifying chandelier, resulting from a collaboration with Fresnel Lenses, a renowned manufacturer of lighthouse lenses, further strengthening its stylistic ties to the maritime environment. The ambiance is further enriched by vintage photographs of maritime-affiliated celebrities and a collection of custom chinaware crafted by the Italian firm Richard Ginori. The expansive lounge and outdoor terrace, directly overlooking the pool and marina, create a space where luxury and maritime inspiration merge, providing an immersive dining experience entirely consistent with the resort’s identity.

Secrets revealed In the Czech Republic, the Automatic Mills Grain Silo, derelict for years, has been brought back to life thanks to a redevelopment project by Prokš Přikryl architekti, which has unveiled its most hidden spaces

W

hen abandoned places are given a new lease on life, it’s a triumph. It’s a victory for the city and its community, for the relationship between memory and future prospects, and for the opportunity to create new uses without consuming additional land. This happened in Pardubice, where the former grain milling building now hosts cultural and social events. Situated along the Chrudimka River, which once powered the water mill, the structure is part of a larger industrial site. This site is now populated by buildings housing cultural institutions, galleries, museums, and workshops for schools. The entire site was acquired by Lukáš Smetana and Mariana Smetanová, a pair of architects who, with a collaborative vision and a knack for interaction, involved other colleagues in the conversion and regeneration of the whole area for the city. The approach guiding the designers of the automatic mill, originally built by Josef Gočár – a prominent figure in 20th-century Czech architecture – defines an intervention keenly aware of the 118 | IFDM

building’s historical memory hile simultaneously recognizing its potential. This is evident, for example, in the possibility to visit the former industrial building right to its core, comprising the silos and the grain milling areas. The journey thus becomes a spatial exploration with a dual purpose: to observe the architects’ remarkable work and to discover the production and work spaces of a bygone era. And so, what was conceived at the beginning of the last century as “the mystery of a machine hidden in a fortress”, in the designers’ own words, now reveals unexpected scenarios to the public. Other newly accessible areas include, in particular, the ground floor, the fifth floor, and the rooftop. The ground floor, open on both long sides, allows views of the terminal parts of the silos and connects to the outdoor public space, characterized by a “red carpet” of bricks that unifies all the complex’s buildings.

Ascending past the new promenade through the production areas, visitors reach the fifth floor.

Originally a machine room, this space is now designated for conferences, concerts, and theatrical performances. On the rooftop, a bar opens up: a new elevated plaza to enjoy city views from a fresh perspective, both visual and cultural. The river, too, regains its prominence, joining the vibrancy and buzz of this new piece of the urban mosaic with the sound of its waters.

he project stems from a desire to ensure onboard well-being, whether for a day, a night, or an extended period. Regardless of the cruise duration, time spent on Akula becomes a cherished, indelible memory, forever linked to a moment of joy. This is the primary objective that inspired both the exterior design, handled by Francesco Paszkowski Design, and the interior concept, conceived by Enrico Gobbi. The outcome is a product of a concerted and

synergistic effort, as well as an intense interplay between craftsmanship and technology, established mastery and innovation, form and function. As Francesco Paszkowski explains, “The distinctive silhouette crafted for the wide open beach maintains an equilibrium between form and function.

The sleek yet powerful hull conveys a feeling of speed, even when anchored, unmistakably bearing the Baglietto signature that’s sure to captivate any connoisseur. Immense windows that let the natural surroundings stream inside give her a contemporary look.” While the exterior design evokes key cruising characteristics, such as ‘speed’, expressed by the hull’s sleek silhouette, and ‘dynamism’, evident in a sequence of retractable elements that allow the space to be adapted for various needs, the interior design stems from a dialogue with the natural landscape, interpreted onboard through a color palette that echoes it. The various spaces, articulated across three levels, are designed to be expansive and interconnected. The fluidity of indoor and outdoor spaces mirrors that of the sea, making the constructed environment a tool that alludes to the ever-moving spirit of the waters. The retractable pool on the aft deck, the disappearing glass walls on the upper deck (which transform the main saloon into a sea-facing veranda), and the forward lounge connected to the sundeck by a similarly retractable staircase all contribute to a comfortable and diverse onboard experience. In the latter instance, the interior design is driven by a constant dialogue with the nature surrounding the yacht: sea, sky, and land take center stage in a harmonious color palette, capable of synthesizing the landscape’s hues onboard. The varying shades of the marine horizon throughout the day tint the design’s palette: ochre and yellow at dawn, orange during the day, and warm amber tones at sunset.

The sea contributes its nuances of blue, while the sun-kissed land and rocks add darker accents. Enrico Gobbi adds, “Great care has been given to lighting design, which has been specifically studied to enhance different indoor atmospheres and emphasize furnishing materials and colours, especially throughout the broad use of wall washing indirect lights. The impression is of a relaxed, elegant interior with discreet yet sophisticated lighting scenarios.” Overall, Akula celebrates the dialogue between human ingenuity and the richness of nature, offering an environment that aims to create memorable snapshots of a journey defined by the luxury of beauty and the privilege of comfort.

To understand what it truly means to design in symbiosis with the environment and nature

rofound. Visionary. Ethical. Matteo Thun has undeniably shaped a crucial chapter in design history – and continues to do so – by maintaining a consistent, sensitive, and deeply respectful approach to the environment and nature. Today, we might label it ‘sustainable’ or ‘green,’ but his philosophy transcends mere labels. More than two decades ago, Thun was already advocating for timeless design: integrated, sensory, and conscious. This design ethos doesn’t chase trends but is rooted in the *genius loci*, the local culture, and a commitment to preserving and protecting our surroundings. Anticipating themes that are now central, he has built a solid and consistent career based on an architectural and design philosophy profoundly connected to the land, its soul, and its very essence.

There’s a precise relationship between your projects and nature – it’s not just a matter of context but also meaning: a relationship of respect, continuity, and reduced architectural impact. Could you tell us about it?

Yes, the soul of the place – the *genius loci* – defines the architecture of every one of our projects. Conscious architecture and interiors that respect nature are an integral part of our studio’s work and philosophy.

With Vigilius, you anticipated a highly relevant theme of architecture perfectly integrated into its natural context. 20 years later, what value do you place on that project, and how do you recall its genesis?

The Vigilius Mountain Resort is our pioneering project. It embodies everything we stand for: local materials, ecological sensitivity, consciousness, timelessness, simplicity, and durability. Over time, the local larch wood architecture has developed a beautiful patina – it’s even more beautiful today!

Often your projects are born next to bodies of water – I’m thinking of the Chiemgauhof retreat, Park Resort Lake Garda, Langham Venice, Lake Resort in Bad Saarow, to name just a few.

Is this a coincidence, or is there a particular predisposition? How much does the presence of the water element influence the design?

When projects are located in the mountains, the focus is on the peaks; when by the sea, it’s the water that deserves attention. Our approach always remains focused on the surroundings, and nature always prevails over architecture.

In the case of a comprehensive nautical project, such as the Seadeck series for Azimut, what principles do you follow in defining the interiors?

We work by subtraction to ensure durability and sustainability. Designing yacht interiors might seem like a challenge, but Azimut is committed to upholding the highest standards of hybrid propulsion. The Seadeck series features an iconic and contemporary interior design that elevates a highquality yacht to the next level while reducing its carbon, water, and waste footprint. Among your latest projects is the Chiemgauhof Lakeside retreat: what are its main characteristics, and how does it differ from your previous projects?

Chiemgauhof is a timber structure inspired by alpine architecture. Comprising three buildings oriented east-west, the complex is connected by gardens, patios, and large glass facades. Each of the 28 accommodation units offers spectacular lake views, while the interiors expertly blend contemporary and traditional styles, creating an elegant and welcoming atmosphere.

In your projects, there’s always a strong continuity between interior and exterior. How important is it today to rethink spaces in terms of this relationship – even in urban contexts?

We aim to create a perfect balance between exterior and interior. Guests should experience being outdoors, even when inside. This concept transcends locations: whether it’s mountains, sea, or city, the architecture and interiors are shaped in harmony with the surrounding environment and local traditions.

Sustainability is a key word in contemporary design. But in daily design practice, how truly applied is it, in your opinion? And how much, instead, remains a statement of intent?

We prefer to speak of ‘consciousness.’ This means avoiding architectural mistakes and selecting the right materials for each context, finding the optimal configuration for building volumes. It’s a process that implies a harmonious synthesis between the surrounding environment, the intended use, and the site. Every solution is unique. Conscious design represents an alternative to the complexity of current sustainability certifications, addressing broader themes like social aspects, cultural heritage, and the value of quality craftsmanship. The goal is to maximize benefits for the community while minimizing environmental impact.

Your studio was among the pioneers of design based on simplicity, durability, and dialogue with context. How has this approach influenced design culture? And today, how do you continue to push the boundaries of sustainability?

rial: it’s a renewable resource easily sourced locally, recyclable, and carbon-neutral. It’s flexible, lightweight, and boasts excellent structural properties.

It’s malleable and ensures a good indoor climate. It’s ideal for prefabrication and can be individually configured. Timber structures meet requirements for structural stability, sound insulation, and fire protection. Furthermore, they are becoming increasingly economically attractive. Prefabricated construction allows us to reduce construction times and costs.

Can you give us a preview of the main projects you’re currently working on?

We are redesigning the spa area of the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise in Canada, and we have other projects in Asia. In Italy, we are developing a resort on Lake Garda, as well as The Langham Venice in Murano – a fantastic project. This involves the restoration of the 16th-century Casino Mocenigo, featuring original frescoes by Paolo Veronese’s pupils, as well as the 20th-century industrial glass buildings.

In Milan, we are designing the interiors of the upper and residential floors of Torre Velasca, one of the city’s most important post-war architectural monuments. Exploring the building’s original interiors from that period and enhancing their character in a contemporary key is a unique opportunity for us.

Here, the architecture functions not only as a shelter but also as a window, a means through which to observe nature’s ever-changing moods and the dynamic interplay of its colors.

In this pristine sanctuary of untouched beauty, the structure gently settles onto the rocks, almost skimming the water, seeking a dialogue with the landscape expressed through a language of complementary shades and material harmony. shimmering surface, thanks to its exterior cladding of light gray cedar shingles. It’s as if the architecture patiently waits for the perfect angle of light to echo the lake’s surface. The main cottage, housing two bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen, dining room, and living room, is situated at the highest elevation. The guesthouse, sauna, and boathouse (complete with a small gym) are positioned on various rocky outcroppings, accessed via elegant wooden walkways that connect the boat landings. Inside, the interiors are also entirely wood-clad, featuring bleached cedar planks that offer muted tones in harmony with the facades, 138 | IFDM

as if the exterior’s subtle hues permeate and embrace the interior. Furthermore, these planks, oriented according to their primary dimension, subtly allude to the horizon line between water and sky. The fireplace, crafted from local granite slabs, and the natural colors of the cottage’s furnishings echo those of the rocky landscape, creating a harmonious blend that speaks of continuity, balance, and seamless integration. Extensive glazing throughout the property fosters a fluid, almost osmotic relationship between the internal living spaces and the external environment.

symbiosis with nature, to such an extent that, seen from above, the small cluster of buildings appears as one with its surroundings. This same cohesive design language defines the other three volumes of the cottage, creating a unified dance of forms, materials, and colors. Varied panoramic views, however, are enjoyed from the numerous terraces wrapping around both the cottage and the guesthouse, each offering a unique perspective. After sunset, as night descends, the only illumination comes from the natural light of the moon, amidst the whispers of the wind and the gentle lapping of water against the rocks.

t seems incredible that the sleek profile of the new Ferretti Yachts 940, with its remarkably horizontal lines, can encompass spaces truly worthy of a residence. Here, that feeling of domestic comfort goes hand in hand with the adventurous experience typical of life at sea. No small feat for a widebody yacht measuring 28.97m LOA and 6.76m in maximum beam, a challenge successfully met by the extensive design team. This collaborative effort resulted in a highly versatile and customizable 5-cabin layout – featuring a master cabin on the main deck and four guest cabins – all while maintaining expansive sea views, thanks to full-height glass walls. For instance, the nearly 30-squaremeter main saloon features a spacious living area configurable with various options. The standard version includes a large Minotti corner sofa opposite a low cabinet with a retractable, built-in TV.

Two optional variants also allow for a second sofa or a storage unit on the starboard side. An optional extended opening glass partition enhances the dining area’s outward view, creating a sense of continuity.

This midship space comfortably sits 8 people around an elegant Bonaldo Art dining table. For all areas, it’s always possible to choose between the Classic mood, evoking warm earth elements, or Contemporary, inspired by sea colors, featuring luminous wood essences and fabrics with fresh hues. Even the fullbeam master cabin, spanning nearly 27 square meters, offers a king-size bed with a leather headboard alongside ample storage, a walk-in wardrobe, and a vanity with a ‘silver roots’ marble cabinet – a material also featured in the en-suite bathroom. The exterior areas are also designed to offer tailored outdoor relaxation. This includes the bow area with a sunpad and a forward-facing C-shaped sofa, the 50-squaremeter flybridge perfect for lunches and dinners, and the far aft area, fully customizable with freestanding Talenti or Minotti furniture.

Memory and landscape In Arromanches, Normandy, the D-Day Museum has been completely reinterpreted by Parisian architects Projectiles, who focused on the intersection of historical significance and inherent territorial features

O

n June 6, 1944, Allied troops landed in Normandy, marking the beginning of Europe’s liberation from Nazism and Fascism. Today, the memories of that epochal event, alongside those related to Impressionism, form the region’s main tourist attraction. To preserve its tangible and intangible heritage, the Arromanches-les-Bains Landing Museum was established at the end of World War II. From its opening on June 5, 1954, until its temporary closure in November 2022, it welcomed over 20 million visitors. In 2023, the museum reopened

with a new building designed by Parisian architects Projectiles, whose professional practice, as they state, appeals to “moving landscapes, oral heritage, ancestral enigmas, the unexpected, and fragments of personal and collective history. Beyond the concept of comfort, we are certainly driven by the pleasure that architecture can offer.” In the case of Arromanches, the true protagonist is the landscape. “We worked according to the motto ‘Once the vestiges disappear, the museum will endure’,” the architects clarify. They add: “the main challenges of this project, which

are memory, the knowledge and transmission of a shared history, as well as our duty of remembrance, beyond the disappearance of certain vestiges of the artificial port in the near future.”

They emphasize that the museum’s relationship with the territory is fundamental. Indeed, its unique position transforms the new museum into a kind of observatory, envisioned as part of a larger landscape system extending from east to west (from one cliff to another) and from north to south (from the marine horizon to the town center). From both the plaza and the slope, all five facades of the museum are visible, contributing to the multiplicity and diversity of perspectives offered on the landscape, enhanced by the new building’s pronounced horizontality. The outdoor spaces also contribute to this complex perceptual system. For instance, the plaza in front of the museum serves as an ideal stage for contemplating the spectacle of the tides revealing what remains of the wartime structures, while to the east, a new treed public space establishes continuity with Place du 6 Juin 1944. Inside, the ground floor offers a continuation of the external public spaces, while on the first floor, the collections – essentially composed of maps and objects – engage with a landscape that becomes the absolute protagonist on the accessible terraced roof.

The visitor journey begins from Place du 6 Juin 1944 and the waterfront. The exhibition galleries gradually open outwards, following a chronological and thematic path that leads from the outbreak of the war to liberation. On the ground floor, visitors enter a multi-level room with a hushed atmosphere, where an introductory film contextualizes the museum’s purpose. The visit continues on the first floor, offering a direct visual connection with the marine horizon and the remnants of the temporary artificial port of Mulberry B, used for the D-Day landings. The structural grid upon which the museum is built also draws inspiration from its modularity. A 4-meter-deep and 8-meter-high canopy surrounds the new building, resting on pre-fabricated light concrete columns that define its perimeter. Finally, a large longitudinal void (16 meters long and 4 meters wide) characterizes each interior floor, over which a large suspended walkway appears to float.

aia belongs to a class of its own: the 40 Alloy, a Sanlorenzo superyacht originally conceived in 2009 by Francesco Paszkowski. Featuring both a semi-planing hull and superstructure crafted entirely from aluminum, it boasts elegant, fluid lines. Powered by twin MTU engines, it can achieve an impressive top speed of 26 knots. Beyond its performance, the vessel offers an owner’s cabin, a VIP cabin, and three double cabins (one convertible to a double), accommodating a total of 10 guests supported by an 8-member crew. This pedigree earned it the Innovation Trophy upon its debut, along with two international World Superyacht Awards:

‘Best Exterior Styling Motor Yacht for All Classes’ and ‘Best Semi-Displacement Motor Yacht Over 30-39m’. Its recent change of ownership to a Greek couple prompted an interior refit, which has now positioned it among the four finalists for the ‘Best Refit 2025’ award in its category. This undertaking was masterfully executed by Alessia Garibaldi of the Milanese studio Garibaldi Architects, who expertly blended the owners’ desire for understated and informal interiors with a deep respect for the yacht’s elegant and inherently Italian character. A meticulous selection of furnishing brands proved pivotal. From the moment you step inside, Dedar wall coverings are complemented by an ivory, beige, dark brown, and burgundy color palette. These are set against wooden panels, forming a backdrop for a Maxalto console, Minotti coffee tables, Cassina armchairs, and Flexform sofas. A strong Italian imprint continues into the owner’s cabin, featuring Febo armchairs and Poliform leather side tables, 150 | IFDM

This attention to detail extends to accessories, such as Pinetti leather items found throughout, and the bold Venini vase, which stands out as the sole black element on board. Overall, the ambiance is warm, refined, and impeccably tasteful, evoking the feeling of being welcomed into a private suite. The exterior deck areas also underwent a targeted restyling, replacing fixed furnishings with contemporary outdoor elements from brands like Roda and Paola Lenti. This maximized usable space and enhanced the convivial atmosphere. Additionally, a series of cleverly designed bespoke structures provide essential storage without compromising functionality.

Living in friesland: amidst water and greenery In Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, Rotterdam-based Powerhouse Company has completed the Huis aan de Haven residential complex that offers a contemporary reinterpretation of local port traditions, thoughtfully avoiding fleeting trends

L

ocated in the northern Netherlands, Leeuwarden is the capital of Friesland. The city recently developed the new Middelsee district in its southern part, which overlooks the Van Harinxmakanaal and boasts a marina as its main attraction. Indeed, the Huis aan de Haven residential complex, just completed by Rotterdam-based Powerhouse Company – founded in 2005 with offices in Oslo and Munich – is also situated right on the water. “’From majestic residences that seamlessly blend with natural environments to sustainable mixed-use complexes that redefine urban landscapes, we meticulously craft balanced projects, grounded in thorough contextual research,’ states founder Nanne de Ru. ‘Designing without succumbing to fleeting trends is a powerful form of sustainability: it creates lasting value beyond passing fads and stands the test of time.’” While the presence of water and greenery in the project area evokes the authentic atmosphere of the northern Netherlands, the choice of a modern design inspired by traditional port architecture allows the complex to offer a contemporary interpretation of the region’s maritime identity. “’The materials used seamlessly integrate into the Middelsee context,’ explains designer Stefan Prins. ‘The combination of brick volume with elegant materials such as powder-coated steel and anodized aluminum creates 152 | IFDM

a metropolitan harbor aesthetic, yet one inspired by historical port architecture. Generous openings, deep reveals, and a rhythm-based facade give the building a strong identity rooted in a balance between robustness and refinement. This allows it to serve simultaneously as a gateway to the neighborhood and a tribute to its roots.’” The complex comprises 90 residential units, including urban apartments, duplexes featuring workspaces, and penthouses with expansive roof gardens. Green spaces, indeed, represent another central element of the project, meticulously designed

by LAP Landscape & Urban Design to emphasize the strong connection between interior and exterior.

The heart of the complex is the communal courtyard above the parking area, conceived as an oasis for relaxation and a space for resident interaction. The penthouses feature spacious terraced roofs that create a lush, stepped structure overlooking the water, the urban landscape, and the internal garden. On the ground floor, residences boast the ‘overtuin,’ a typical Frisian tradition, which is a private garden located at the front of the dwelling.

A ‘family’ yacht Cantiere delle Marche’s latest gem Babbo is a 43-meter vessel boasting elegant lines and impeccable furnishings, designed by Francesco Paszkowski Design

S

ometimes, a powerful sentiment drives a project. Such is the case with ‘Babbo,’ a 43-meter explorer yacht commissioned by three owner brothers who wanted to spend holidays together with their families. They envisioned a yacht with more cabins and ample social spaces, an evolution of the first Babbo. While the owners cherished the atmosphere of the original, its limited space wasn’t ideal for their family gatherings at sea. This new iteration, however, is perfectly sized. Across its four decks, it offers generous volumes and six suites – four nearly

identical double cabins and two twin cabins on the lower deck for children or guests – accommodating up to twelve guests. All suites feature the same high standard of comfort and design, ensuring no hierarchy among them. The yacht also features a spacious main saloon dominated by the Harper sofa, designed

by Antonio Citterio for Flexform, with its saddled leather armrest (fronted by a coffee table with a Calacatta marble top). Aft, the cockpit transforms into a floating platform over the sea. The upper deck hosts a sky lounge, perfect for indoor dining, furnished

with Maxalto’s Pathos table paired with light leather Febo armchairs, and an additional relaxation or conversation area equipped with Maxalto’s Lucrezia Soft sofa, all in neutral tones. For the exterior lines, Francesco Paszkowski opted for a blend of elegance and impeccable proportions, with horizontal windows subtly lightening the silhouette of the 8mm steel hull and aluminum superstructure. Inside, the ambiance is one of understated refinement, achieved through light maple walls, ultra-matte wide-plank oak flooring with a tatami finish, and a palette of white and beige furnishings, accented by dark brown elements to emphasize architectural harmony. Lighting prioritizes discreet ceiling spotlights and linear recessed wall lights, creating a soft, never intrusive effect. Finally, the engines: two Caterpillar C32 Acert, each delivering 746 kW, which significantly reduce fuel consumption and NOx emissions, ensuring a range exceeding 5,000 nautical miles at 10 knots. This is a yacht designed for long voyages, but its purpose extends beyond that: “Babbo was conceived to be a family home on the water... Functional, refined, without unnecessary ostentation,” one of the owners revealed. Given the outcome, the goal appears to have been achieved.

The floating theatre Designed by the Dutch firm Waterstudio, L’Île Ô cultural space along the banks of the Rhône in Lyon is ushering in new infrastructure models and redefining how we live with water in the face of climate change

I

t’s the first of its kind in Europe, located right in the heart of the city. Lyon’s new L’Île Ô theatre is a floating stage that harmonizes seamlessly with the Rhône river. Primarily dedicated to fostering artistic and cultural awareness among children and young people, it was conceived by Waterstudio architects, who are highly skilled at working with water, a medium inherently in flux. This expertise comes both from

their Dutch origins and their knack for finding solutions to the challenges of urbanization and climate change. “Given the unpredictability of future developments and unforeseen needs,” they explain, “we must devise flexible and sustainable strategies, planning for change. Our vision is that large-scale floating projects in urban environments offer a tangible path forward for these challenges.” It was no small feat to engineer, construct,

and install what proved to be one of the studio’s most complex and ambitious floating structures to date, a collaborative effort involving close work with both Dutch and French partners. Built entirely from cross-laminated timber (CLT), a lowcarbon alternative, the building’s foundation rests on a massive 11 x 36 meter reinforced concrete monohull. This substantial base was fabricated on land near Lyon and then launched into the water using one of the largest available cranes. Above the waterline, six interconnected volumes create a dynamic composition, further enhanced by a prismatic white facade that reflects light and playfully interacts with the water. This vibrancy extends inside, where the venue features two performance halls, seating 78 and 244 respectively, plus an additional 245 sqm of modular space spread across three levels. This adaptable area supports a diverse range of uses, including workshops, training courses, and various events. A 130 sqm panoramic terrace further expands public access, offering elevated views of the river.

Extending Maserati’s electrification strategy onto the water, Tridente is 10.5m zero emission powerboat built for lake and coastal day cruising, with peak power of 600HP and battery capacity of 252 kWh, delivering a cruising speed of 25 knots, a top speed of 40 knots, and recharging in under one hour. The all-electric dayboat is made of carbon fibre, finished to the highest creative standards by the craftsmen at Hodgdon Yachts, a US boatbuilder from Maine and a specialist in superyacht tenders. The boat can accommodate up to 10 persons (including driver) in a cockpit, which can be configured for dining or acceleration. Passengers can relax on a sundeck alongside a bathing area with a shower and ladder for swimming.

An enclosed cabin forward includes a day berth and WC. It was conceived in partnership with Vita Power, a marine technology company founded to reduce the impact on the marine environment by developing an electric and integrated ecosystem of high-performance electric propulsion systems.

The defining element of the new residential project by Studio A-Side, founded by architects Alice Baccolo and Giovanni Bua, is the facade cladding, created using over 1,100 custom-cut slabs of Dekton by Cosentino. The resulting effect is a dynamic architectural surface, composed of bands of varying heights and modular panels, combined with vertical bronze metallic elements that enhance the facade’s three-dimensionality and compositional rhythm.

“We chose Dekton for its resistance, aesthetics, malleability, and customization possibilities,” explain the architects. The cladding alternates two shades: Dekton Keranium, dark and material-rich, for the building’s base band; and Dekton Nacre, a bright cream, which evokes the subtlety of micro-cement and the tactility of lime stucco. The chromatic palette is completed by bronze metallic strips, arranged with apparent randomness, which generate a second visual layer on the blind portions and balconies, contributing to the overall effect of the facade.

Fantini Mosaici has crafted two exceptional interventions at the new Bvlgari boutique on Via Monte Napoleone, housed inside the renovated Palazzetto Taverna Radice Fossati. On the ground floor, the art of mosaic takes centre stage through two bespoke creations that embody Italian artisanal excellence.

In the Rotunda – a space inspired by the Temple of Minerva – the Calacatta marble floor comes alive through a harmonious design and curved brass inlays, laid with sartorial precision. Nearby, next to the dramatic spiral staircase, an in-situ Venetian terrazzo adds rhythm and depth: golden Travertine interplays with precious Italian marbles, from Verde Alpi to Pink Onyx. A collaboration that weaves together architecture, fine jewellery, and exceptional craftsmanship. The partnership between Fantini Mosaici and Bvlgari is much more than a project: it is a shared narrative of beauty, luxury, and a deep-rooted culture of making – set in the heart of Milanese elegance.

PERSHING GTX70 | FERRETTI GROUP

The first Pershing GTX70, a new addition launched on March 19 at the port of Fano that marks Pershing’s 40th anniversary, is the result of collaboration between the Ferretti Group Product Strategy Committee led by Piero Ferrari, Vallicelli Design and the Group’s Engineering Department. Measuring 21.88 meters in length with a beam of 5.42 meters, it combines a sporty spirit and maximum livability in a more compact vessel. It is spread over two decks and a sportbridge, and can accommodate up to six guests in three cabins. The exterior design, in the classic Pershing gray color, features some of the stylistic traits that distinguish all models in the GTX range. The sleek arched lines, combined with the verticality of the bow, give this model great elegance. The beach area at the stern, furnished in this first unit with a sun deck integrated into the transom structure (OPT), can reach a surface area of 23 m2 thanks to the opening of the side terraces. The stern platform is equipped with a “dual linear lift” system which, in addition to aligning with the beach area to increase the living space, can also be used to launch a jet ski or a Williams 325 tender. The main deck is a true open space. The cockpit, completely shaded by the flybridge, features a large C-shaped sofa and a table. The indoor lounge area extends into the outdoor area via the galley, thanks to a retractable sliding glass door in the galley cabinet. Towards the bow, the living area layout with two opposing L-shaped sofas creates greater harmony in the space.

In the DOGE 400 project by Ocean King, a hand-tufted wool and Tencel rug creates a refined visual flow between interior and exterior areas, merging technical function with poetic expression. From innovative yarns to tailor-made textures, every detail is designed to interact with both architectural space and the marine environment. G.T.DESIGN continues to be a strategic partner for architects and designers, offering high-performance, sustainable solutions that enhance life on board.

MONTEMERCY, FRANCE PRIVATE VILLA | FAP CERAMICHE

This private villa, located in Montemercy, just outside Paris, underwent a renovation spearheaded by Cameleon Design studio. The project encompassed both the interior architecture and exterior design, approached with a bespoke and collaborative methodology. Thanks to detailed 3D project renderings, the clients were able to preview the final aesthetic of the spaces before completion. FAP Ceramiche collections were chosen for their ability to interpret and elevate the environments with elegance and contemporary appeal. The multidisciplinary design team, comprising decorators, graphic designers, and project managers, opted for the Oxide, Sheer, and Color Now collections. These were used in combination to create harmonious and tactile spaces. Oxide’s industrial aesthetic, Sheer’s inherent tactility, and Color Now’s vibrant chromatic range all contributed to defining the overall identity of the design.

Official debut for Nautys, the new high-end outdoor brand that chose the Venice Salone Nautico show to share its vision: combining contemporary design, advanced materials, and integrated technology in furniture solutions designed to embrace life at sea – and beyond. Born from the collaboration between Lucchesedesign, Summit X, and Gallinea, the brand presented a comprehensive indoor and outdoor collection aimed at yachts, luxury hospitality, and prestigious residential settings. Furniture crafted in HIMACS, seamless surfaces, and mechatronic details expressed a new language for outdoor living: bespoke, durable, beautiful, and functional. An immersive stand powerfully conveyed the brand’s values: innovation, nautical elegance, and meticulous attention to detail.

MILAN | CALIFORNIA BAKERY QUICK-STEP

The new California Bakery locations in Milan – on Via Larga (140 sqm) and Corso Garibaldi (160 sqm) – are the result of a project by the Milanese studio Facta Studio (artistic direction), with execution entrusted to DN Service. The restyling aimed to refresh the brand’s identity, making the spaces more contemporary and functional to accommodate customers from brunch to aperitif. The flooring features the Ciro collection from the Alpha Vinyl range of rigid vinyl floors. These are characterized by a herringbone configuration and are suitable for high-traffic environments due to their superior resistance to wear, water, and impact, high sound absorption capacity, effective absorption of dropped objects, and reduced thickness. The Unizip system simplifies herringbone installation, cutting down on both time and waste, as each plank can be used on both sides.

Apreamare’s new semi-planing yacht, stretching over 27 meters and fully custom-designed, boasts a retro appeal. It was conceived with a vision to transform both navigation methods and the very experience of life at sea. Its impressive volumes, timeless elegance, extensive comfort, and remarkable liveability are complemented by the sense of safety and reliability characteristic of the Maestro line, now reinterpreted by the duo Casali-Tagliavini.

To furnish the new vessel’s upper deck, the designers selected the George Collection by Ludovica Serafini + Roberto Palomba for Talenti. Featuring a stainless steel frame, the furniture is entirely clad in a gently padded rope weave. The visual lightness of this intricate structure is beautifully offset by generously padded seat and back cushions.

Orizzonti restaurant, located on the thirteenth floor of the Uptown Palace, offers a culinary proposal born from the meticulous research of Chef Luca Pedata, supported by his long-standing sous-chef Giuseppe Robustella. Guests are treated to a 360-degree view spanning the Torre Velasca, the Duomo, and even the distant Alps. The interior design is meticulously crafted to visually extend this experience, utilizing materials such as marble, wood, and metal, all developed around a warm, natural palette inspired by earthy tones. Walls and ceilings feature shades of brown, grey, and beige, while the floors combine walnut parquet with strikingly veined marble. In the lounge area, Patrick Jouin’s Ester armchairs are presented in various natural hues, and the tables are illuminated

by Filicudi rechargeable lamps, designed by Andrea Pedrali. The main dining room is further enhanced by Sebastian Herkner’s Stiel armchairs, while in the bar area, Ester collection stools by Patrick Jouin, in a bordeaux color, invite guests to enjoy a sunset aperitif.

Silent Yachts’ fully electric and solarpowered SY62 3-Deck Open (18.86 meters) yacht seamlessly blends cutting-edge technology, sustainability, and comfort. Equipped with solar panels and electric motors, it ensures nearzero emissions and features expansive outdoor living areas, including a full dining space, panoramic views, and a superyacht ambiance. For the master cabin, Once Milano selected naturalhued linens, while for the guest cabins, a mustard tone was preferred. These are complemented by their signature velvet wavy blankets, which feature unique quilting that gives the top an undulating effect. Pillowcases in various sizes and colors, ranging from yellow and mustard to light blue and stone blue, adorn the yacht’s cabins and deck.

“Il Cielo in una Stanza” (The Sky in a Room) is part of the “Restoring the Enchantment of Villa Medici” program. On June 13, 2025, this initiative, promoted by the French Academy in Rome, inaugurated the refurbishment and redevelopment of seven guest rooms and two historic gardens within the iconic villa. Following interventions by India Mahdavi, Silvia Venturini Fendi, and Kim Jones, this new phase involves teams selected through a competition, tasked with transforming a stay at Villa Medici into an aesthetic and sensory experience. The concept behind “Il Cielo in una Stanza,” the bedroom designed by Zanellato/ Bortotto in collaboration with Incalmi, is inspired by an imaginary stroll through Rome’s architecture and colors. The custom-made double bed, bedside tables, and sofa bed, crafted by Bolzan’s joinery, seamlessly integrate into the room’s architecture. The room is bathed in the wisteria blue of the walls and features a balustrade and staircase made of white refractory clay.

This architectural element becomes the common thread of the entire range, available in floor-standing or wall-hung versions, to adapt to different living contexts. Elegant drawers and metal boxes, designed to fit into open shelves and offer practical and versatile solutions, complete the composition.

MOON | CERAMICHE REFIN

Ceramiche Refin reinterprets the stone effect with Moon, characterized by large mineral inclusions on a homogeneous background that create an original graphic. This special composition creates a slight sparkle, whose intensity varies based on the angle and lighting. Marvel Diva is Atlas Concorde’s marble-effect collection, inspired by rare and precious marbles. It brings the natural beauty of stone to a new level of aesthetic and design expression, also thanks to the available large formats. The 320-meter residential yacht comprises 125 private residences from 90 to 670 square meters, plus 20 guest suites. The exterior and naval architecture has been designed by Espen Øino International and constructed by Meyer Werft, with interior design led by Francesca Muzio of the Italian studio FM Architettura.Central to the design is the Air Garden, a double-height lobby conceived as a floating piazza. The space features a lagoon-like carpet in water blue, surrounded by a crystal waterfall dissolving interior-exterior boundaries. Café terraces overlook integrated green spaces. The design philosophy centres on FM Architettura’s “I am my Home” concept, where “amenities become an extension of your home, a casual gathering spot where broader social life unfolds.” In this concept, residences are connected through exclusive lobbies, providing residential autonomy within the larger community framework. This approach creates experiential spaces through four elemental gardens – Earth, Water, Air, and Fire. The Earth Garden integrates gourmet markets and culinary studios, whilst the Water Garden feature regenerative spa facilities opening to exterior landscapes. Scheduled for 2029 delivery, the project represents a typological shift in luxury maritime architecture, creating permanent residences that circumnavigate globally while maintaining both spatial intimacy and residential character.

An innovative 42-meter yacht, spanning four decks, is born from the shared vision of Maiora, brand of Next Yacht Group, and Elie Saab. Signed by Cassetta Yacht Designers, exterior design evokes fluidity, lightness, and openness. Extensive glass surfaces, generous volumes, and harmonious proportions create a dynamic silhouette that visually connects the yacht to its natural surroundings. A wholly reimagined layout is introduced onboard. Guest suites, traditionally placed below deck, are relocated to the main deck, alongside the full-beam owner’s suite, creating airy, light-filled spaces with sea views and direct access to outdoor areas. The upper deck is conceived as a fully openable, panoramic living area, dissolving boundaries between inside and out, and offering a new kind of spatial freedom. Inside, under the creative direction of Carlo Colombo, the yacht reveals a refined selection of pieces from the Elie Saab Maison collection, complemented by bespoke elements designed specifically for the yachting environment. The first unit of the 42 Exuma has already been sold. Construction is underway, with delivery scheduled for Summer 2027.

HEERLEN, THE NETHERLANDS | HOLY WATER | MVRDV | ZECC ARCHITECTEN

The St. Francis of Assisi Church in Heerlen, in the south of the Netherlands, was originally built over 100 years ago and stopped hosting services in 2023.

MVRDV and Zecc Architecten have won the competition held by the municipality for the transformation of the church into a public swimming pool. Nicknamed “Holy Water”, the project gives the vacant church a new, social function, while preserving the historic elements of this listed national monument. An adjustable swimming pool floor brings flexibility to the space that was once the church’s nave, allowing it to host a variety of activities in addition to swimming.

The floor also makes it possible to fill the entire space with a thin layer of water, creating an impressive reflection that gives visitors the feeling that they can walk on water. An illuminated circular canopy marks the main entrance, providing a reference to the church’s past and a contemporary addition that connects old and new. Once inside, visitors can proceed through the church’s aisles to reach the changing rooms or the catering facility, both located at the rear of the church. Glass walls separate these passages from the climatised central pool space. The first dive is expected to take place at the end of 2027.

Overlooking the fairways of Yas Links Golf Course, Waldorf Astoria Residences is flanked by waterfront views of mangrove forests on one side, and Yas Marina Circuit on the other. Nordic Office Architects envisioned three buildings, each consisting of a series of intersecting volumes that subtly slide past each other, creating dual-aspect views of the Golf Course and mangroves for the majority of residences. Each residence is wrapped in flowing terraces and lush greenery that open up to expansive views across Yas Island. The architectural expression embraces soft curves, biophilic elements, and refined materials like slated wood and glass balustrades. Fusing cutting-edge eco-technologies with lifestyle-driven design and smart functionality, the NEXT concept reimagines the onboard experience reshaping layout, ambiance, and usability of every space on board. From the expansive flybridge to the bow, and from the salon to the waterline, all living areas have been reconsidered with freedom and flow in mind, featuring flush, modular design. A fully reimagined bow terrace offers customizable configurations including trampolines or integrated sunpads. Floor plans are flowing and flexible, with natural light prioritized throughout. REGGIO CALABRIA, ITALY | CENTRE OF MEDITERRANEAN CULTURE| ZAHA HADID ARCHITECTS

Construction began in February 2025 for the Centre of Mediterranean Culture, which will complement existing archaeological and art museums by exploring the profound relationship between Calabria and the Mediterranean Sea that has defined the region’s past and will continue to shape its future.

Reconnecting the working port to be an integral element of the city’s public realm, the Centre of Mediterranean Culture has been designed within the Reggium Waterfront redevelopment as a primary civic and cultural gathering space for the city. The 24,000 sq. m building incorporates a series of permanent and temporary exhibition galleries, in addition to an aquarium, essential new multifunctional conference facilities for the city with an auditorium for performances, public presentations and industry events, as well as new educational spaces to be used by the region’s schools. The centre also includes leisure amenities for visitors such as a bookshop and restaurant & bar overlooking the port. Four wings of facilities lead from a double-height atrium that serves as the entrance from the city. The centre’s composition alternates architectural volumes and public courtyards that will be sheltered from the sunlight of one of Europe’s southernmost cities and the strong prevailing winds from the north that are funnelled through the straight in summer.

Overview

Italian nautical exports defy tariff headwinds International sales of Italian-made pleasure craft continue to expand, but now face potential challenges from proposed US tariffs. Motor yachts largely dominate the sector

T

he Italian pleasure craft industry has once again emerged unscathed from the downturn that impacted exports across many strategic sectors in Italy during the first ten months of 2024. In fact, Confindustria Nautica’s Monitor report, published in March 2025, shows a significant 12.8% increase in international sales. However, considering current geopolitical tensions, it’s crucial to remember that the pleasure craft shipbuilding sector is among the most exposed to the United States, which accounts for 20% of its exports, valued at approximately 800 million euros. Without a tariff agreement with the Trump administration, not only boat manufacturers but also component suppliers could face cascading difficulties, even if they don’t export directly. Italy is set to confirm its leading position in the superyacht market in 2025. Specifically, Boat International’s Global Order Book credits the Italian industry with the highest number of yacht orders over 24 meters, with 572 units under construction out of a total of 1,138, representing a combined length of 22,195 meters. Despite a decrease of 28 yachts compared to 2024, Italy maintains an absolute majority of orders, holding 50.3% of the market. This, however, marks a shift in trend after a long period of expansion, with Italy’s -4.6% decline being steeper than the global average of -2.4%. Nevertheless, Italy remains firmly at the helm of the sector, considering its closest competitors are Turkey with 146 yachts

under construction (6,410 meters total length), the United Kingdom with 81 (2,147 meters), and the Netherlands with 69 (4,483 meters). Looking at average gross tonnage, Norway (17,440 GT) and Germany (4,500 GT) specialize in giga-yachts, the Netherlands (1,387 GT) in mega-yachts, while Turkey (541 GT) and Italy (397 GT) focus on superyachts. The latest edition of “Il Diporto nautico in Italia” presents data from the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport on the registered nautical fleet in 2023, offering insight into the domestic market. In terms of length, 45% of registrations are for vessels up to 10 meters, slightly over 50% are units between 10 and 18 meters, while 4.5% of new registered boats exceed these measurements. Regarding propulsion, motorized units overwhelmingly dominate, accounting for nearly 76% of the total, compared to 24% for sailboats.
