in an exclusive conversation with Ilona Lee on her newest Palazzo, Art Foundation, and why she gives back to Rome.

Alda Fendi, the youngest of the FENDI Fashion House founders' five daughters, has given the Velabro neighborhood, and Rome itself, a new life and is eager to push the boundaries of creativity in the Eternal City.

Ilona: What inspired you to start The Fondazione Alda Fendi – Esperimenti, a complex that combines hotel and exhibition spaces?

The concept of Rhinoceros originates from Paris Passages. These covered galleries - which still exist today - include small hôtels de charme, cafes, antique shops, art galleries, flower shops ... So inside rhinoceros it is possible to visit an art exhibition, see a movie, but also be immersed in art, living in the twenty-five residences, eating at the gallery restaurant and accessing the panoramic terraces with a unique view in the world, ranging from the classicism of the Palatine, seat of the palaces of the emperors, to the Forum Boarium, where Rome was born, up to the precious domes of the Roman Baroque.

The artistic proposal of the rhinoceros gallery is inspired by my Foundation, Alda Fendi - Esperimenti, which was created in 2001, when independently from the family business I decided to realize my dream and to dedicate myself to the world of art, with the help of my daughters Giovanna and Alessia. After years of Experiments, between ancient and contemporary, I strongly wanted a palazzo of the arts in the center of the most ancient Rome: rhinoceros, which Jean Nouvel thought of as a real city of art.

ILONA LEE: What do you love about the Rhinoceros the most?

ILONA LEE: What does art mean to you?

And who is your favorite artist?

ALDA FENDI: I decided to entrust Jean Nouvel for this project for his approach made of poetry and a strong and never conventional sign. Jean listened to the site and designed his intervention as a recovery of the history of the building, made up of wrinkles and minimal stratified traces, which are flanked by new and hyper-contemporary signs, with a view to a harmonization that does not it smooths out the contrasts, indeed it enhances the three souls of a single project: housing, gallery, gallery restaurant. Of this building Jean Nouvel says: “Each apartment is a project, living in this place is a privilege”. And I completely agree with him.

ALDA FENDI: Art for me is life. In 2001 I created Fondazione Alda Fendi Esperimenti precisely to realize the dream I had since I was a girl and to take care of the world of art. It is a great passion for me and I find that all art is contemporary! And how not to adore the artists we have exhibited at the rhinoceros gallery in recent years: Michelangelo with the sculpture “Crouching Boy”, El Greco with the painting “Saint Peter and Saint Paul” and two precious Picassos: one cubist and revolutionary - “Young woman”(1909) -, the other lyrical and intimate: “Le peintre et son modèle en plein air” (1963).

ILONA LEE: Which philanthropic causes are closest to your heart?

With my Foundation I have always been committed to ensuring that access to art is free for everyone. This mission is very close to my heart and for this reason they call me the “rebel patron”. We began in 2001 with the restoration and enhancement of the apse of the Basilica Ulpia, in Piazza Venezia, the largest polychrome flooring ever found in the Imperial Forums. Then eleven years of multimedia theatre with the performances of Raffaele Curi, and today new experiments in the arts.

In 2018 I wanted to give as a present to the city of Rome a permanent lighting for the Arch of Janus - lighting signed by the Oscar winner Vittorio Storaro, and from 2021 the Special Superintendence for Fine Arts of Rome entrusted me with the area of the Arch itself, which we open every week to the visitors with free admission. And then there is the artistic proposals that the Foundation spreads along the six floors of the rhinoceros gallery, including art, music, projections, dance, installations, always with free admission. I firmly believe that art and culture are an important instrument of freedom and democracy and as such must be freely accessible to everyone.

ILONA LEE: Is Rome your Home?

What do you love about Rome the most?

I was born in Rome and this is the city I love: for me it is the most beautiful in the world. I even love its street holes! It is like a beautiful woman, with have moments of neglect, but always charming!

I am convinced that Rome must have the ability to renew itself by drawing on its history and its immense artistic, architectural and cultural heritage.

The future is experimentation. It has to be inspired by what has been accomplished in the past, to draw its strength and nourishment from there.

ILONA LEE: You are a true Visionary and Inspiration for many people around the world.

What is your recipe for success in business and life?

I love to consider myself a cultural operator and to put my experience at the disposal of those like me who have this passion. Both in the family business and in my Foundation, Alda Fendi - Esperimenti, I had the privilege of being in contact with art and artists, starting with Karl Lagerfeld, an absolute genius who taught me that the most important project is the next one, the one still to be realized.

ILONA LEE: What makes a great leader?

I can tell you about a great teaching that I received from my mother and that I have always put into practice in my life: courage and humility. And that's what I love to pass on to my family as well.

ILONA LEE: How do you find inner peace in today’s world?

I love everything I do and I have made my passion for art my reason for living, and this is a great commitment but also an absolute gratification in itself.

Palazzo Rhinoceros Roma An artistic haven in the heart of Rome, Rhinoceros Roma was established by Alda Fendi in 2018 and designed by world renowned French architect, Jean Nouvel.

The complex, known as The Fondazione Alda Fendi – Esperimenti, combines the hotel with exhibition spaces (through a cultural cooperation partnership with the Hermitage Museum) and culture oriented boutiques that open onto the street. The exhibitions are not confined to a traditional space, but unravel through the six floors of the building. The foundation is a place where people can be fully immersed in art – where they can eat, sleep and “always see something new when they come to visit.” And in keeping with Fendi’s mission to reveal the culture of Italy, exhibitions are always free and open to the public. With her foundation, Alda Fendi has given the Velabro neighborhood, and Rome itself, a new life and is eager to push the boundaries of creativity in the Eternal City.

In the center of what was once Imperial Rome lies twenty-five unique apartment/suites in a 17th century building designed and furnished by French architect Jean Nouvel. The palazzo is named Rhinoceros, a tribute to the enduring strength and power of Rome, and one of its key features is a life-sized model of a rhinoceros installed right beneath the 4th century Arch of Janus out front.

ILONA LEE: Who is the clientelle of Rhineceros?

SIMONE: There are 3 souls in Rhinoceros, the hospitality with our beautiful apartments, the art gallery with a very exciting program, and our 360 degrees terraces and restaurant.

All of them do attire a large array of clientele and the diversity of our Guests is what makes us so special.

Our guests aren't driven by the rate as the majority of the travellers, they are curious about spending a night in a very unique and unusual project.

You may have the CEO of a Fortune 500 Company but also the family that is interested in our art gallery or the locals on the roof celebrating a special occasion.

ILONA LEE: What Rhineceros guests love about the palazzo the most ?

SIMONE: I usually meet all the guests on arrival and my priority is to understand why they come to Rhinoceros. Some of them are lovers of our architecture , others love the unbeatable location in the heart of Rome, others can't wait to have their aperitivo in the terraces or a private cooking class in one of their apartments.

What really makes me proud is also that all of them mention the genuinity of our friendly staff, nothing is too much trouble for the Team and they will do their very best to please our guests.

ILONA LEE: What do you love about the Rhinoceros the most?

ILONA LEE: What Rhineceros guests love about the palazzo the most ?

SIMONE: Rhinoceros is a baby that is starting to walk now so that is probably the most exciting project i i have been involved into in the last few years.

SIMONE: It may sound as a cliche' but we are now rebuilding the industry after the pandemic and luckily all looks very promising.

The potential is huge and I simply love to wake up and being here in a fantastic building with a great team.

Trust towards our Guests in managing their expectations, and more than anything towards the younger generations in order to attract talents to our industry.

I would also like to mention the support from our owners , they are all very involved in the life of Rhino's and always ready to jump in when it is needed.

We need to be able to inspire them, offer better conditions, a better worklife balance, allow them to express themselves, and we need to be able to invest in them and their growth.

If we do it with love and consistency I have no doubt that a career in hospitality will be something for them to look for.

A HOPE FOR A RE-BIRTH Baby 3.0”, a new monumental artwork by Lorenzo Quinn, a symbol of rebirth, a tribute to the mystery of life shared by every human being and gives hope for the future. The sculpture is also for Venice - that has just concluded the celebrations for its 1600 years a hope for a new Re-birth.

“Baby 3.0”, in steel mesh and cast aluminum with its 7 meters high and almost 9 meters wide, with the poetry and the evocative force of its forms, has been revealed to the public on July 14th and is currently exhibited in the garden of Palazzo Corner della Ca’ Granda in San Marco, beautiful and monumental building on the Grand Canal, designed by Jacopo Sansovino, historic site which houses the Metropolitan City of Venice, that has patronized the exhibition, and the Prefecture.

The Art for Humanity LORENZO QUINN, CONTEMPORARY ARTIST In conversation with Ilona Lee on Rebirth, Venice & Humanity Contemporary Italian artist Lorenzo Quinn is a leading figurative sculptor whose work is inspired by such masters as Michelangelo, Bernini and Rodin. Exhibited internationally, his monumental public art and smaller, more intimate pieces transmit his passion for eternal values and authentic emotions.

He is best known for expressive recreations of human hands. ‘I wanted to sculpt what is considered the hardest and most technically challenging part of the human body’, he asserts.

‘The hand holds so much power – the power to love, to hate, to create, to destroy.’

Born on 7th May 1966 in Rome to the Oscar Award winning Mexican American actor Anthony Quinn and his second wife, costume designer Lolanda Addolori, Quinn’s childhood was split between Italy and the United States. His father had a profound influence on him, both in terms of living in the limelight of the film world and with respect to Anthony’s early work in painting and sculpting architecture.

Quinn studied at the American Academy of Fine Arts in New York, planning to be a Surrealist painter.

However, aged 21 he decided that his future lay in sculpture, which could better accommodate his energy and originality. He vividly recalls the moment in 1989 when he felt that he had created his first genuine work of art: ‘I had made a torso from Michelangelo’s drawing of Adam… an artisan’s job … I had an idea and began chiseling away, and Eve came out of Adam’s body…

It had started as a purely academic exercise, yet it had become an artwork.’

ILONA: What is the message behind your new creation Baby 3.0? What inspired you to create it?

LORENZO: I think we live in very precarious times and there is a need of a deep change.

There is a lot of negativity and one of the primary reasons for which I have created artwork, especially public artworks, is to generate love, ways of love and empathy.

We know we are living in very difficult times. I’m referring to the pandemic and economies are collapsing, there has been loss of lives and is still not over. Now we enter into a new terrible phase with the war in Ukraine, and Yemen and so on.

As far as I can,

I believe it is important to make people aware that a rebirth is needed, a new renaissance built on positive values.

I also need it on a personal level: this artwork also marks my change as an artist. The idea of a new universe, of a new dimension.

ILONA: What is the symbolic value of hands in your art creations?

"The hands I always say have enormous power. They can mark a gesture of love and they can hurt, they can open and they can close.

Man communicates directly with his hands and I also do it in art: I turn to people, to the public looking for a dialogue: I don't want to create monologues and therefore I seek immediate understanding and empathy from the public." - LORENZO

"I funded this completely on my own. I’ve been working for 20 years exclusively with a gallery and I needed to widen my horizons and to act independently. I think we have to believe in ourselves. It was scary, but it turned out very well in the end, so I'm incredibly proud of this work."

ILONA: How does Baby 3.0 reflect your own rebirth?

LORENZO: First of all, is the first time I undertake such monumental artwork without the direct support of any gallery, I funded this completely on my own. I’ve been working for 20 years exclusively with a gallery and I needed to widen my horizons and to act independently.

I think we have to believe in ourselves.

It was scary, but it turned out very well in the end, so I'm incredibly proud of this work. Baby 3.0 also marks a new use of artistic materials, such as wire mesh, and new forms away from the subject of hands that I have been dealing with for many years.

This does not mean that I will stop designing new works around this very communicative part of our body: I continue to believe that hands are an extraordinary means of sending messages to people without the need for mediation or interpretation by critics.

Moreover, there are many artists who have faced and retraced the same subject throughout their career, from Giacometti with his threadlike characters to Botero with opulent women... each artist is known for a particular creative form, which remains the its hallmark and of meditation.

ILONA: What are the deepest human values you believe in ?

"Empathy, kindness, true love, I think those are very important. If there are all these values, everything else follows."

ILONA: Tell us about the creation and installation process. What was the biggest challenge of the whole process? What about the materials used? Is the large size of your sculptures always intentional?

LORENZO: The creation and installation process was extremely complex and really stressful, even for the time required which did not allow us to find alternative solutions.

In the end, I had to make a part of the sculpture in Asia in Shanghai the pelvis that welcomes the baby, in aluminum plate - and the Baby, in steel mesh, in Spain.

So than of course, all the parts had to be shipped. At first the pieces had to travel by train, but due to the war in Ukraine it was impossible and that delayed the delivery of the sculpture by 45 days.

We could not inaugurate the artwork at the beginning of June, therefore, as we liked, but the unveiling was set for mid-July during the summer months, when a lot of the art community was already away on vacation: so, another challenge. But I was still very happy with the outcome: adorable friends came to the inaugural event from India, USA, Australia, South America, so that was great to see so many people supporting me.

When the artwork is public the large size of the sculpture is obviously intentional: you put it outside, therefore it must be visible and impactful. Of course, it is a great commitment, from the difficulties of creation to the expenses and technical complications of transport and setup. But it's worth it, land art requires surprising works, which leave a mark and dialogue with the territory, capable of hypnotizing people.

ILONA LEE: What significance does Venice have to you?

LORENZO:

Venice is very important to me.

Both in my artistic career and in personal life. My mother was Venetian, so I used to go there when I was a little kid and part of my family still lives in the historic center or is buried in the San Michele cemetery. My wife and her family are also Venetians, so we are all very attached to this extraordinary city, which is still unique in the world.

Venice was the first big stage to start making myself known by international critics, first at the Art Biennale in 2011 and then with "Support", the big hands that came out of the waters of the Grand Canal to support Palazzo Sagredo.

Lorenzo: Yes, I am working on many projects: I am fully booked up until May 2023 with exhibitions of monumental works, installations and inaugurations, so it is a somewhat overwhelming and tiring period. But I think it is an important moment of artistic growth and I enjoy it. I am incredibly excited about everything I am experiencing.

TIMELESS DESIGN & HERITAGE Curves, arcs, and arches are recurrent architectural themes across the resort, a reminder of the traditional arches of the cortijo's original patio, a place of 'sol y sombra', so evocative of the Andalucian architecture.

The classic Spanish hand fan has been captured in the sculptural chandelier of crystal fans that appear to cascade down through the spiraling staircase; whilst the classic 'botijo' clay water jugs of Andalucia are referenced in the modern rustic charm of the terracotta lamps in the Cortijo restaurant, as well as the guest rooms.

The interior design has, where possible, used national and regional suppliers to create custom pieces, from luxurious Spanish woven rugs, artisan pottery, crafted wallpapers that echo the motif of the Andalucian fan, to bold murals that engage. CANNES YACHTING FESTIVAL 2022: REINVENTING BOATING FOR «GREENER» NAVIGATION 6-11 September 2022, Cannes, France The yachting industry has not escaped ecological awareness. Reconciling nautical activities with respecting the environment is tomorrow’s challenge. For several years now, marinas, the nautical sector, as well as professionals and users have been aware of the real consequences of their nautical activities on the planet. Even though the industry seems to have difficulty in coming together around a single impetus, many isolated initiatives are emerging and offer a glimpse of the yachting of tomorrow: more respectful of nature, more in tune with current issues.

To accompany this «green» approach in a concrete way and fully realize its awareness-raising role, the Cannes Yachting Festival already initiated an ecological approach in 2019 with the «Energy Observer» educational exhibition presenting the work on hydrogen and renewable energies carried out in the first eponymous hydrogen-powered ship. Last year, the show launched a brand-new «green» trail: an ecological trail highlighting exhibitors developing or presenting a concept in favor of ecology. Encouraged by the success of this first edition and driven by the desire to go even further in this approach, the Cannes Yachting

Festival is renewing the experience by highlighting more boats, products and eco-efficient solutions in its new green route 2022, which will be offered to visitors wishing to discover or consolidate their knowledge about the environmental evolution of the marine industry at sea and marine ecosystem.

Cannes Yachting Festival SeaBubbles presents its electric, hydrogen-powered flying boat Live at the Cannes Yachting Festival, SeaBubbles, innovative startup pioneering sustainable mobility, unveiled the world premiere of its lifesize version of the SeaBubble, an electric flying boat powered by hydrogen. Committed to overcoming environmental issues in the field of nautical mobility, SeaBubbles has designed a zero wave, zero noise, zero-emission navigation experience for passenger transport.

Responding to the rapid transformation of mobility and inspired by innovations in the naval, automotive and aeronautical industries, SeaBubbles defines a new generation of boats, which are designed to offer an unprecedented, futuristic, nautical experience, while preserving the natural ecosystem.

Powered by a hybrid system, composed of hydrogen fuel cells and an electric battery pack, and combined with automated and retractable foils, the SeaBubble offers two and a half hours of autonomy, allowing to cover 50 nautical miles (i.e 90 km) at 18 knots with only 4 minutes of recharging in H2 station (3x 3.2 kg of hydrogen at 350 bars).

With a length of 8 meters and a width of 3.5 meters, the SeaBubble accommodates up to 12 passengers, depending on configuration.

The innovation of SeaBubbles is strongly tied with supply infrastructures and goes handin-hand with the development of a hydrogen industry and local ecosystems to which it contributes. In spring 2023, SeaBubbles will unveil the first pilot line and the real-life test phases will begin.

Ilona: How do you define success?

Success is a concept as subjective as happiness or love; it is unique to each person that holds it.

As Anne Sweeney once stated, “define success on your own terms, achieve it by your own rules, and build a life you are proud to live.”

To me, success is knowing that I gave back more in life than I took, in all respects, to my children and to my community, including all the love and wisdom that I was able to give. I am constantly striving for that goal, sharing with others and investing in their future.

Laura: Today’s true leader needs to think beyond himself like never before. The world is desperate for leaders who can think globally and fill the void of an antiquated, myopic system in our current environment. The leaders who are drawing attention right now are those who are able to incorporate multiple disciplines in an overall vision for the future, including initiatives of sustainability, economic viability and accessibility to education and healthcare.

The true leadership we crave as a society is evident in those who simultaneously understand both the limits of our resources and the incredible value to allocating those resources globally and equitably.

Ilona: What is the mission and vision for your business and life?

Laura: The mission of my business is to incorporate all of the resources available to me through an incredible network of other leaders and be able to offer these opportunities to my clients. I look to my network for the ability to provide clients with a range of advantages in every aspect of operations, including R&D funding for sustainable and state of the art technologies that can and will advance their business.

We have a very talented team that calls upon its global relationships for access to many levels of advisory functions, such as financing, cryptocurrency markets, marketing and more. This amazing network has brought clients from all over the world and has allowed me to fulfill my lifelong vision of learning about people, cultures and governments in places I could have only dreamed in the past. This is living my best life.

Ilona: Who inspires you and why?

Laura: I am truly inspired by women who have pioneered before me to pave the way for access to all of the opportunities with which I avail myself today. Women who have broken the glass ceiling and made a global impact, and from whom I draw my courage to go forward in new and fantastic arenas. Women like Anne Sweeney, Gloria Allred, Tam St. Armand and Nezha Aloui. I am truly humbled by these, and women all over the world who have broken barriers and achieved a level of success by thinking independently and beyond themselves. These women have inspired myself and others to follow them just by sharing their passion, they are amazing.

Laura: My inner well-being is based on my faith, and it is from there that I draw my strength. In my opinion, faith is all about one’s relationship to the universe and the energy you devote to it. Every day I speak to my soul, I meditate with my spirit and allow my ideas to develop and transform. I think about how I can focus my energy in a positive way and share that energy with others. Finally, I feel grateful. Through this process I am able to bring harmony to my inner self that in turn, inspires the creativity and determination that I bring to each and every day for my clients.

Also we need to always be vocalizing the bigger picture to the team and what the ultimate goal and success looks like. Be the #1 advocate to the overall mission.

Ilona: What is the mission and vision for your business and life?

Russ: To live a balanced life between family and friends and work. To see the success of everyone around you. It gives me a lot of enjoyment to see everyone around me winning. It is not a zero sum game. There is abundance out there for all of us.

I strive to be the best version of myself every day.

That takes awareness and honesty with what your strengths and weaknesses are. Always looking to improve on the weaknesses.

It is nice to study other successful people in these areas and learn from their experiences.
