The 20th Century radically transformed the balance of the alpine landscape by building impressive hydraulic dams, that became the Modernist pride of Switzerland. They changed the country by providing energy to the cities located in the valleys below. Today, these dams bare witness to a foregone era, when glaciers and snow covered peaks were abundant and thought of as the eternal water providers of the nation. Yet all these glaciers are melting rapidly nowadays, and bountiful water will probably be sorely missed soon. Whether the monuments of modernity will take on a new significance in the course of renewable energy strategies is yet to be seen.

Visiting the pumped-storage power plant Punt dal Gall and Ova Spin up in the Grisons over the past three years, the Chair of Landscape Architecture of Professor Christophe Girot recorded and documented the dam infrastructures and their immediate surroundings with the help of ETH architecture students. Together they tested a mix of lidar technology, analogue photography as well as aquatic, ambisonic and electromagnetic recordings to produce this compilation.

Through a precise mix of images and sounds, the imposing stature of these dams, and all the technocratic power they symbolize, unfold before our eyes in an overwhelming sensory discovery and experience of place. Dammed Landscapes sounds quite ominous — and it is, for it questions first and foremost, the scale and passing materiality of time and space embodied through these objects in the alpine landscape.

Das 20. Jahrhundert veränderte das Gleichgewicht der alpinen Landschaft radikal durch den Bau beeindruckender Staudämme, die zum modernistischen Stolz der Schweiz wurden. Sie veränderten das Land, indem sie die in den Tälern gelegenen Städte mit Energie versorgten. Heute zeugen diese Dämme von einer vergangenen Ära, als Gletscher und schneebedeckte Gipfel noch reichlich vorhanden waren und als ewige Wasserspender der Nation galten. Doch all diese Gletscher schmelzen heute rapide, und das reichlich vorhandene Wasser wird wohl bald schmerzlich vermisst werden. Ob die Denkmäler der Moderne im Zuge der Strategien für erneuerbare Energien eine neue Be­deutung bekommen werden, bleibt abzuwarten.

Beim Besuch der Pumpspeicherkraftwerke Punt dal Gall und Ova Spin up in Grau­bünden in den vergangenen drei Jahren hat die Professur für Landschaftsarchitektur von Professor Christophe Girot mit Hilfe von ETH-Architekturstudent*innen die Stauan­lagen und ihre unmittelbare Umgebung erfasst und dokumentiert. Gemeinsam testeten sie einen Mix aus Lidar-Technologie, analoger Fotografie sowie aquatischen, ambiso­nischen und elektromagnetischen Aufnahmen, um diese Zusammenstellung zu produzieren. Durch einen präzisen Mix aus Bildern und Klängen entfaltet sich die imposante Statur dieser Dämme und die ganze technokratische Macht, die sie symbolisieren, vor unseren Augen in einer überwältigenden sensorischen Entdeckung und Erfahrung des Ortes. Dammed Landscapes klingt ziemlich bedrohlich — und das ist es auch, denn es hinterfragt vor allem das Ausmaß und die vergehende Materialität von Zeit und Raum, die durch diese Objekte in der alpinen Landschaft verkörpert werden.

Point Cloud Visualisations In addition to photographs, three-dimensional point cloud models were recorded during the on-site excursions using various laser scanners.

The georeferenced and millimetre-accurate models were created by staff of the MediaLab at the Chair of Landscape Architecture. They make it possible to spatially understand the water infrastructures of the Engadine power plants and at the same time give poetic impressions of the interplay between landscape and infrastructure.

The following pages show a selection of views of this continuous model. Comparable to a X-ray view, interiors and facades, pressure tunnels and rock faces or the landscape surface and underground worlds can be shown in the same view. A spatial impression is created, which remains to be explored to the full extent of its potential.

We see the method as a spatial medium of perception, as a complement to photography which is suitable for complex spatial structures, grown forms and much more.

Punktwolkenvisualisierungen Während den Exkursionen vor Ort wurden neben Photographien auch dreidimensionale Punktwolkenmodelle mittels verschiedener Laser­ scanner aufgenommen. Die georeferenzierten und millimetergenauen Modelle wurden von Mitarbeitern des MediaLabs am Lehrstuhl für Landschaftsarchitektur erarbeitet. Sie ermöglichen es die Wasserinfra­ strukturen der Engadiner Kraftwerke räumlich zu verstehen und zugleich poetische Eindrücke in das Zusammenspiel von Landschaft und Infrastruktur zu geben.

Auf den folgenden Seiten ist eine Auswahl von Ansichten dieses zusammenhängenden Modells abgebildet. Vergleichbar mit einem Röntgenblick lassen sich Innenräume und Fassaden, Druckstollen und Felswände oder die Landschaftsoberfläche und unterirdische Welten gleichsam auf denselben Ansicht zeigen. Es entsteht ein räumlicher Eindruck, welchen es in vollem Masse seiner Wirksamkeit noch zu erforschen gilt.

Wir sehen die Methode als räumliches Wahrnehmungsmedium, als Ergänzung zur Fotografie welches sich für komplexe Räumliche Struk­ turen, gewachsene Formen und vieles weitere eignet.
