West Virginia University Medicine

WVUM determined that an expansion of their Emergency Department was critical to its long-term growth strategy. The new expansion and redesign nearly doubled the Emergency Department in size to 30,000 sf including 36 acute care exam rooms and 8 trauma bays. The Level I Certified Trauma Program is located in a dedicated support zone with direct access to state-of-the-art radiology services. In addition, the new department includes a 5-bed pre-admission holding area and dedicated mental health spaces.

Goals for the new department were to not only manage patient volumes, but to transform of both space and operations. Emergency Department leaders, clinicians and staff worked collaboratively with IKM to develop an innovative design solution, adopting a model designed for the rapid assessment and evaluation of emergency patients: referred to as vertical split-flow patient management. The updated design of the department allows for the treatment rooms to be utilized as acute care exam rooms as needs fluctuate.
