Republic of the Philippines Department of Education M E S S A G E To our Dear Students, Parents, Teachers, Staff, Administrators and Partners in Education, Greetings of Peace! Another school year is coming to a close, signaling the start of a new chapter for most of you. You’ll move on to high school, college, or vocational school, while some of you may immediately join the workforce. Whichever path that stretches out before you, you can be sure that it is a fresh one, a renewed one. We are entering a period in the world’s history in which many of the old systems are being dismantled, gradually being replaced by newer, and hopefully, better ones. Technology, governments, businesses are fast evolving, recognizing that you, the individual, are a significant part of a bigger whole. You matter, and what you do matters. The Philippines is no stranger to this transforming reality. More than ever, your country recognizes your role in society, government and the economy. And so we are investing heavily on you; putting our hopes in each one of you. In education, alone, we have introduced changes which aim to equip you with more relevant knowledge and skills for the new economy. The K to 12 Basic Educationprogram is a massive upgrade of lessons, subjects and methods, to ensure we are honing your gifts to maximize your potential. You are at the heart of this upgrade. In helping you grow to be the persons you are meant to be, we are helping build a nation’s future. The fruits of these efforts will take years before they yield fruit, but they will definitely affect, with positive force, all sectors of society. You have the capacity to effect these changes. I pray that you relentlessly seek and build better lives for yourselves and for the larger community around you. To our parents, teachers, staff and administrators, I thank you for your patience and support as we undergo these radical changes. An investment is not an investment without capital. Your support and sacrifice make up the capital which would bring us to see our children lead and live in a country much transformed by your investment. Thankyou! And to all our partners in education, to our proponents in congress, local government units, the private sector and various non-profit organizations, you are well-aware that your generosity in sharing your resources and support will go a long way and return to you a hundredfold, in one form or another. Thank you for believing in the Filipino youth! On behalf of the Republic of the Philippines, we congratulate you, our graduates of 2013!

Mabuhay ang Kabataang Pilipino!

Bro. Armin A. Luistro, FSC Department of Education Secretary

Message from the Directress

My warmest greetings and congratulations to all Graduating Amcanians Batch 2013. You all have been blessed by our dear Lord Almighty for achieving such an accomplishment, Prep, Elementary and High School Graduates. May you grow in God’s love and forever be grateful to Him for He makes everything possible. Thank your loving parents too, for their support every step of the way, your caring teachers, for their genuine concern and understanding; your classmates and friends, for their friendship and camaraderie. Your alma mater, the ATHENEUM is so proud for what you have become; the embodiment of all the values which your parents and teachers have instilled in you and which you have lived by. You are the reflection of the vision that ATHENEUM has set forth to achieve. Be proud to be an Amcanian. Always be honest and give the best of yourselves at all times.

Happy Graduation and may God bless you all!

ly freaked out. I found the comfort room and entered it. I was almost deafened by the loud soars of the crowd in the Mall of Asia Arena. All were cheering for either Brgy. Ginebra or San Miguel Cofee Mixers. As soon as I saw the players in the court, my jaw literally dropped. I saw Enzo Bonicillo head for a lay-up with his teammate and best friend Dom Navarro and PBA superstar James Yap. I stayed and watched for a bit until I remember about school. I quickly got up and headed for the exit, I noticed a familiar face; Alethea Reyes was also there to support her high school friends together with her husband Daniel Padilla. I didn’t even try to eavesdrop as I heard them talking about Nica Latayan’s new movie as an international spy. They all planned to head to its premier night together. I decided to tag along for they won’t even notice me there. It eventually became a mini reunion as the group bumped into Eugene Arnold, Paula Cabrera and Reymon Salazar, successful civil engineers, Rom Chan, JC Camposanto and JP Bustamante, electrical engineers also watched the game. They all went to a restaurant and was greeted by Kathrina Ginauli, the restaurant’s owner. The restaurant had a very classy feel to it. It was surrounded with elegant paintings. One particularly caught

my eye, as I looked into it closely; Ezekiel Pingol’s signature was at the bottom. He became a doctor and also an artist. I tried to touch the painting but I was sucked into another restaurant and coffee shop that was actually owned by Chelsie Diaz. I sat on one of the comfy couches as I waited for the cup of coffee that I hope could calm me down. I picked up a newspaper and saw Suzette Penetrante’s article tackling the Philippines’ economic situation. I browsed and saw an article on the discovery of new elements by a fellow Amcanian, Caredel Poncejan.Jasan Mangalindan, also a scientist, developed advancements in the scientific field, which were also documented in the newspaper. There was also a page dedicated to the news about the merge between Banco De Oro, handled by its CEO Angelica Alonzo and Jyn Reyes who is now a businessman. The barista then opened the television and I almost spat out my coffee when I saw Jemy Damian as the assistant coach of the Lady Eagles alongside her partner Rex Intal. Just when I was about to sink it all in, the barista changed the channel and I saw Kenneth Bautista, the first ever Filipino to play for the NBA playoffs. I felt very proud, not only for Kenn, but for all those who I’ve seen through this chaotic exchange of events. I finished my coffee and got up to pay but a hand tapped my shoulder. When I turned around, I saw a woman

in a stewardess’ outfit who told me to sit down and buckle up for we are now landing in Europe. The speakers turned on and I heard the pilot, Ian Sintos, telling us to buckle and get ready for landing. As we landed, Igor Hellman, Ian’s co-pilot, thanked all the passengers as they got up and exited the plane. I waited for all to file out, once I got off the plane, I saw my good friend Shannen Gado sitting by Gate 3 that was for a flight back to the Philippines. She was escorted by guards given that she is now working for the Philippine Embassy in Rome. She was seated next to Cheska Quibael, who recently finished an architectural landmark in Europe’s heart. I heard someone shout my name behind me, as I turned around, I was faced by a people danci n g a n d enjoying a party. I was on a huge b o a t party held by Paulo Carsula for his recent and biggest badminton victory. He was talking with Geenea Vidal, who became an entrepreneur and an ambas-

catch up. The door slammed at my face and I failed to suppress a chuckle when I saw what was written on the door. “Lhyndz Ejercito. Principal”. I opened the door and got little shocked by a flash of the camera. I was standing on a photo shoot. That was when it hit me; I saw all of my batch mates’ futures but mine. Mine turned out to be a model’s and I was currently in a Monique Lhuillier photo shoot. For every flash that came one after the other, each of my batch mates’ futures flashed right before my eyes. I saw the engineers, the doctors, the architects, the athletes, the scientists and all the others. Then, I felt very overwhelmed upon seeing the future. It is very different than how we all were in high school. High school is high school. That’s the period when you learn to make friends and even enemies. You discover things about others and yourself as well. You treasure every victory as a gift and every failure as motivation. It is when you learn to treasure time itself. Having seen a glimpse of what it’s like 10 or 20 years from now, I just smile. I smile because things such as failures happened. I smile because challenges are happening. And I smile because great things are about to happen. Suddenly, I felt a nudge on my shoulder and I heard someone call me by my surname. My sight blurred for a bit. After a few blinks, I got it to focus again but this time I was eye to eye with a very familiar face. “ Miss Samaco?! Why are you smiling by yourself? Are you crazy?” to 10. By the time I opened them, I was the class laughed as Miss Vidal went rather pleased to be in the school, I saw on and on about how crazy I looked. Lhyndz Ejercito enter a room so I ran to High school never gets better than this. sador against hunger. The people were very much pumped up by the beats of the DJ, Rowell Cuenca. Beside him was his buddy Yuta Shimazu who was a wellknown computer programmer. Simple Plan then took the stage and I immediately recognized Christoffer Gamat, the band’s new vocalist. The music then died down and a soft melody from a violin surfaced. I looked for its source and saw Karleen Macaspac playing and Charina Crudo singing. Both excelled in playing the violin and singing, respectively. Karleen became the world’s most famous violinist while Charina had the honor to be the first ever Filipino to be nominated as the best performer of the year in the annual Grammy’s. A white light suddenly blinded my eyes and when I blinked the normalcy back, I was in a hospital room with Kira Tuyan and Jasmin Abueg talking to their patients. I decided not to move, afraid of being magically teleported again. I shut my eyes and counted
