Dear Parents Last weekend we celebrated our rst Family Mass since the beginning of last year.

It was fantas c to see many families being involved in this celebra on a er more than a year and a half. As a school we work very closely with Infant Jesus Parish and have been very much looking forward to organising an opportunity for all families of the school to join with the Parish to celebrate this Eucharist which was led by Fr Tadgh. The singing, led by Mrs Carroll, Mrs King and the Infant Jesus School Choir also greatly enhanced the celebra on. As a faith community we look forward to seeing more families join us for Family Masses in the future.

Reconcilia on Sacramental Program

Sacrament of Reconcilia on (Penance) Congratula ons to all the Year Three children who received the Sacrament of Reconcilia on for the rst me last week. The children and their families par cipated in a very prayerful and memorable retreat and celebra on.

From the Principal

Ini a ves at Infant Jesus School Congratula ons to the students who were selected to represent Infant Jesus School at the 2021 Inaugural Technology Challenge which was organised by the Digital Technology Teachers and supported our Infant Jesus School extra curricula element of i-Excel / i-Hour.

The selected students par cipated as a team of four in either the Senior Challenge or the Junior Challenge. The aim of the challenge was to use their coding skills to solve various problems and tasks based on the book ‘Uno’s Garden.’ All the students shared their gi s and talents, worked very coopera vely and were able to very e ciently and e ec vely solve all the ac vi es. At the conclusion of the challenge the children were very excited to return to school and share their new skills with their friends.

Many thanks to Miss Myles and Mrs Mabbs who assisted all the children with some ‘training’ before school and during lunch breaks to prepare for the event.

Parent Volunteers Mass and Morning Tea On Thursday 25 November, a Volunteers’ Mass will be celebrated at Infant Jesus Church, followed by a morning tea which in the School Hall to say ‘Thank You’ to all the parents who have assisted with school ac vi es throughout year.

We recognise that parents are a very important link between home and school and we greatly value and appreciate the support they have provided the sta and students of Infant Jesus School. It is tremendous to have this level of interest displayed in the development of both the children and the school as a whole. Over the past 365 days we have lived the en re liturgical year and celebrated Jesus Christ’s life, death, resurrec on and ascension into glory. The Sunday following (28 November) we enter into the joyous season of Advent.

The word Advent means “coming” or “arrival”. The focus of the en re season is the celebra on of the birth of Jesus Christ in his rst Advent and the an cipa on of the return of Christ the King in his second Advent. Our prayers at this me remind us that Advent is the season of wai ng.

Advent is marked by ti

•teachers and parents working together, •greater understanding by parents of their children’s schooling, •greater understanding of the role of teachers and the planning and organisa on required within the classroom, • more goodwill and mutual respect between parents teachers and sta , • children seeing their parents and teachers sharing common beliefs, a tudes and goals, • more opportuni es see adults both teachers and parents as role models.

Advent is one of the few Chris an fes vals that can be observed in the home as well as at church.

With its associa on with Christmas, Advent is a natural me to involve children in ac vi es at home that directly connect with worship at church. In the home an Advent Wreath is o en placed in a prominent place and lit each day. An Advent Calendar is a way to keep children involved in the en re season. There are wide range of Advent calendars, but usually they are simply a card or a poster with windows that can be opened, one for each day of Advent, to reveal some symbol or picture associated with the Old Testament story leading up to the birth of Jesus.

Advent is a season with its own special mood, colours, sounds, words and joys. The colours of Advent are violet, mauve or magenta. An Advent Wreath is a circle, usually of evergreen branches, with four candles placed in or around it (usually three purple and one rose), one for each of the four Sundays of the season. The circular wreath is a sign of God's loving and never-ending care.

• During Advent one candle is lit every week.

• The purple candles are for the sorrow we feel for not loving Jesus enough.

• The rose candle is for the joy surrounding the impending birth of Jesus.

• The white candle is the “Christ Candle” and represents the life of Christ.

• The evergreen symbolises God is with us always and will never change.

• The circle symbolises that God is eternal with no beginning and no end.

A reminder to our Kindy Parents for 2022 that there will be a Kindergarten Informa on Night on Monday 29 November 2021 in the School Hall commencing at 6.00pm for all parents of children a ending Kindergarten in 2022.

The Kindergarten Informa on Night will provide parents with the opportunity to nd out more about the school and the Kindergarten program in 2022.

The Infant Jesus School Annual Community Mee ng for both the School Advisory Council and Parents & Friends Associa on will take place on Tuesday 23 November 2021 in the school hall commencing at 6.00pm. At this me, Annual Reports of both representa ve bodies will be delivered, and the School Advisory Council will present the school fees for the 2022 year. 2022 Enrolments As the school undertakes the process of prepara on for the upcoming school year, it is important that we are aware of possible movements, both in and out of the school community. The end of any school year is a busy me for many families insofar as transfers due to work or other personal circumstances.

We have a number of families on our wai ng list, so if you do know you won’t be returning in 2022, please write to the school so as to allow other families the opportunity to gain a posi on at Infant Jesus School. This allows the school to plan for next year’s classes and new enrolments.

School Banking The School Banking program will not be returning to schools beyond 2021 due to Government decisions.

For many years our generous volunteers have given of their me to provide this service.

Currently Mrs Tracy Caputo coordinates the school banking for our students. With only a few weeks of school to go families will need to nd their own alterna ves from 2022 as School Banking will no longer be available at Infant Jesus School.

Families currently accessing the School Banking program have already received informa on regarding 2022 and beyond. We thank Tracy for all her work with School Banking during 2021.

Pre-Kindergarten applica ons Enrolments are now being taken for siblings and new students wishing to commence PreKindergarten at Infant Jesus School in 2022.

Families with children eligible for Pre-Kindergarten in 2022 are required to ll out a Pre-Kindergarten Enrolment Applica on Form.

Infant Jesus School will con nue to operate half day Pre-Kindergarten groups next year with the days of a endance being Tuesday and Thursday.

Paren ng Ideas – Michael Grose Independence-building is vitally important for parents. It’s the pathway to children’s competency, con dence and crea vity, and the short cut to resilience and real learning.

Families always develop shared language around the values that have strong meaning for them. If resilience is a shared value then there invariably will be a strong set of words and phrases about resilience factors such coping, exibility and perseverance.

Similarly, the values of independence and selfsu ciency are re ected in a family’s proprietary language. In fact, it’s through shared language that culture exists. If you are looking to building a culture of independence in your family then crea ng your proprietary language around independence is a great way to start.

These following ten examples of independencebuilding language, and the principles behind them, will help you create your own family’s language.

4. “Which of these two would you prefer?” Goal: Decision-making Parents as wise leaders need to call the shots on how the family life is conducted, including health and welfare issues such as appropriate bed and bath mes. Some things are not up for nego a on. But there are areas where parents can righ ully hand autonomy to children and say, ‘It’s your call!’ Choice of clothes, how they keep their bedroom, what they eat and who they play with are the types of decisions they can make. Naturally, this is age-related and you do need to have some in uence on their choices.

5. “How can you make this happen?”

- Goal: Problem-solving Kids get used to bringing their problems to parents to solve. If you keeping solving them, they’ll keep bringing them. A problem-solving approach relies on asking good ques ons, which can be challenging if you are used to solving your child’s problems. The rst ques on when a child brings you a problem should be: ‘Can you handle this on your own?’ Next should be, ‘What do you want me to do to help you solve the problem?’

These ques ons are not meant to deter children from coming to you; rather, to encourage and teach them to start working through their own concerns themselves.

2. “Is this something you can do?”

- Goal: Self-help Independence takes many forms but perhaps the most common is the development of self-help skills. The con dence, pride and, for most, sheer pleasure that kids doing the simple things for themselves such a toddler tying his shoelaces or a child making her own lunch is immeasurable. Yet it is so easily denied by well-meaning parents and adults who see it as their job to do everything for children. Independence begins at home with the development of self-help skills.

3. “Have you checked the help roster today?”

- Goal: Contribu on A great way to develop a sense of independence is to give kids opportuni es to help out at home.

There is no need to overburden children with jobs, but a sensible alloca on of chores according to their age and study requirements is not only a great help to you, but fantas c training for them. It also builds accountability and a work ethic, both highly valued characteris cs for con nuing success at school and later in life.

1. “Never regularly do for a child the things a child can do for him or herself” - Goal: Independence This is perhaps the original paren ng-forindependence manifesto, and it’s a philosophy that guides many teachers and parents today. In e ect, this sentence means that wherever possible - we give children the skills and competencies to look a er themselves physically and emo onally. It requires a great deal of pa ence, me and courage from parents and teachers as the sentence is easier to say than to put into prac ce. But it’s a worthy guiding principle that leads to selfsu ciency in children, and ul mately redundancy as parents.

7. “What can you learn for next me?”

- Goal: Self-su ciency Learning from mistakes is part of the independence-building process for children. O en adult impa ence or unwillingness to put up with errors prevents us from giving kids the chance to do things for themselves or take real responsibili es. If independence is to be a major part of your family’s culture then it’s impera ve that we help kids learn from their mistakes whether social, behavioural or just messing up while helping out at home.

8. “How do you feel about this?”

- Goal: Emo onal intelligence An o en over-looked aspect of independence is the ability to self-manage your emo onal state.

Emo onal self-management starts with the recogni on of how you feel about a par cular event or ac on and then labelling that feeling. If possible prompt to iden fy their emo ons before they act on them. You can also revisit events and ask children about the feelings that may have led to a certain behaviour such as hur ng or yelling at a sibling.

6. “We rely on you to do this.”

- Goal: Reliability Reliability is closely connected to responsibility and other aspects of independence. Every child over the age of ve, at the eldest, should do something that someone else relies on whether it’s looking a er a pet, clearing the meal table or emptying the garbage on a regular basis. Having others rely on you has its challenges and can be a learning curve. They’ll inevitably forget to put the rubbish bins out on garbage night, meaning your bin will be over owing for the next week. They’ll need to be reminded about feeding the pet or clearing the table. Kids inevitably won’t get things right, but that doesn’t mean we should stop giving them responsibili es.

9. “When you muck up, you make up.”

- Goal: Accountability Kids of all ages will make mistakes. In fact, mucking up is part of the learning process.

But kids will just repeat their mistakes unless they experience the consequences of their decisions. The use of behavioural consequences is a way of teaching children to take greater responsibility for their lives and to learn to make smarter choices.

10. “How will you x this?”

- Goal: Restoring rela onships Independent kids are usually socially-smart kids who don’t operate in a bubble. They know that their behaviour impacts on others they are mindful of the thoughts, feelings and behaviours of others.

They also make amends or restore rela onships when their behaviour impacts nega vely on others. Rela onship restora on is a lifelong skill and involves the following: swallowing your pride, making up, giving something back, not holding a grudge and moving on.

This week as our students focused on those in need around the world by par cipa ng in Sockober we re ect on and share the Mission Prayer from Pope Francis.

Heavenly Father, when your only bego en Son Jesus Christ rose from the dead, he commissioned his followers to “go and make disciples of all na ons” and you remind us that through our Bap sm we are made sharers in the mission of the Church.

Empower us by the gi s of the Holy Spirit to be courageous and zealous in bearing witness to the Gospel, so that the mission entrusted to the Church, which is s ll very far from comple on, may nd new and e ec ve expressions that bring life and light to the world.

Help us make it possible for all peoples to experience the saving love and mercy of Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever.

Friday 3 December - Year Six Social Evening This event will be a parent organised and hosted event to be held on Friday, 3 December from 6.30pm – 9.00pm. For more informa on, please contact the Gradua on Commi ee or your child’s Parent Representa ve.

Thursday 9 December - Gradua on Luncheon The Year Six students, the Leadership Team and their teachers will host a luncheon at Italian’s Restaurant. There is no cost to families for this event. We will depart Infant Jesus School by bus.

Students will be allowed to wear Free Dress on this day and can be collected early from school at approximately 1.30pm.

Thursday 9 December - Gradua on Mass at 6.00pm The Gradua on Mass will be held at Infant Jesus Church at 6.00pm. All Year Six students will need to wear their Infant Jesus School Summer Uniform for this event. At this celebra on each Year Six student will receive their Gradua on cer cate and a school gi . Gradua on cupcakes will be given out to all students at the end of the Mass.

Friday 10 December - Fun Day On their nal day at Infant Jesus School the Year Six students will par cipate in a ‘Fun Day’. They will depart Infant Jesus School by bus and will be a ending an excursion organised by their class teacher. On this day all Year Six Students are to wear their School Leaver’s Shirt.

Advent Sunday 28 November is the rst Sunday of Advent. Advent begins the Church’s liturgical year and prepares people to celebrate the birth of Jesus at Christmas.

It is s ll very important for Chris ans to prepare their hearts for Jesus. Chris ans should remember the real meaning of Christmas, the birth of Jesus. Coun ng down the days of Advent can help people consider what it must have been like wai ng for the promised Messiah.

Advent is about wai ng as God’s people had spent centuries longing and wai ng for the day the Messiah would come. Advent is not about passive wai ng. It is an ac ve me of wai ng during which Chris ans are invited to respond to God’s Spirit in their lives.

People can count down the days of Advent leading to Christmas with an Advent calendar. Advent calendars are one way to focus the an cipa on and excitement of Christmas on preparing for the birth of baby Jesus.

A ached is an Advent Calendar for families to use, which focuses on giving, rather than receiving.

St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal Each year St Vincent de Paul helps out the most vulnerable members of our community, by giving them the tools needed to have a joyful Christmas lled with dignity. One way we can support St Vincent de Paul in assis ng those who need it, is by crea ng Christmas hampers. Each class has been given a list of items of the bring in to help assemble a Christmas hamper. We are grateful for any dona ons you are able to donate.

Below is an example of how your dona ons can help.

Heidi was heavily pregnant and living in a tent. She and her partner Nikolas had lost their home, and when they could no longer stay with family and friends, they had no other op ons. Thankfully, our Vinnies' Volunteers could be there to help Heidi and Nikolas get back on their feet.

This Christmas, many families like Heidi and Nikolas' are struggling. Since the pandemic began, many have lost work, and now as the bills con nue to mount, some are struggling to keep a roof over their heads.

This term has been such an exci ng and busy me for Year Two. In Technologies, we worked together to create our very own Cardboard Arcade Games inspired by Caine’s Arcade. We worked collabora vely to plan, design and create our games. We held a Cardboard Arcade Game a ernoon where we showcased and played our games with our family and friends. This was such an exci ng and entertaining me for us all. A er this a ernoon, we re ected on ways we could enhance and improve our games.

Last week, we had the Year Four students visit our class to show us their Rules and Laws presenta ons. They tested our listening skills and understanding by making us complete a quiz that they created. This was a lot of fun and it inspired some of us to have a go crea ng our own ones.

In our wri ng unit we been learning about Persuasive Speeches. We have been learning to understand and demonstrate how to prepare and present a persuasive speech in our modern post Covid -19 world.

We learnt how to do this via a video presenta on and also a face to face presenta on. We learnt how to use palm cards, di erent apps such as Keynote and iMovie for our presenta ons and strategies to keep the audience engaged.

Surf Online Safe- The importance of Router Se ngs.

Last Wednesday, 2022 West Australian of the Year, Paul Litherland, presented to our parents at our cyber safety informa on night. Whilst Paul shared informa on about many di erent topics, including social media and cyber security, one thing that Paul explained the importance of was router se ngs. Router se ngs are a simple & e ec ve way to restrict internet access to your child’s devices in the home and are done through your modem or router. Many modern units have extensive capabili es to alter se ngs to devices that access the internet in the home. For between $150 to $250, you can purchase a quality modem that will allow you numerous restric on se ngs.

As an example, internet access to your teens phone may be restricted a er a certain me at the click of a mouse, whilst a parents device can s ll access the internet without restric on. Many also o er parental control se ngs directly through the modem. Any computer store or electronics store can point you in the right direc on for such a unit.

Family Zone Another way to manage your child’s technology usage is through Family Zone. Family Zone o ers an in home internet security op on through hardware (Family Zone Box), as well as a complete mobile system through the use of apps (Family Zone App). With the box, you can monitor and modify the homes internet connec on to the devices used by your kids, whilst s ll maintaining open access to your own devices.

Simple to set up, the Family Zone Box can manage access rules and schedule play, school, study and sleep mes for all your family’s devices. It can even manage guest access. Perhaps the best feature of The Family Zone is the op ons available for the use and restric ons of Social Networking apps! Not only can you place restric ons on the use and downloading of such apps, you can also add restric ons or limit access during certain mes of the day and evening. A great tool if you want your kids to do their homework, instead of cha ng with their mates on Facebook or Instagram.

JAMF Parent At Infant Jesus School, our BYOD 1-1 iPads in Year Three and Four are managed using Jamf. There is also a parent version that Year Three and Four parents are able to access.

Jamf Parent is an app that allows you to manage your children's school-issued devices. Using Jamf Parent, you can restrict and allow apps and device func onality on your children's devices. Jamf Parent is available on iOS and Android.

Uniform Swap Meet A uniform swap meet will be held on the last day of school - Friday 10 December in the school hall from 8am. Sellers to set up from 7:45am.

Doors open for Buyers from 8am. Swap meet nishes at 9am. All items for sale must be the new uniform style and logo and be in good condi on. Buyers and sellers must arrange their own payment - either cash on the morning or make a direct electronic funds transfer to the seller to pay for the items. No need to RSVP, just come along early to grab a bargain.

The lost property basket will be cleared out in Week 9 so if your child is missing anything, please check the lost property basket near the i-Lab this week. Any unclaimed items will be donated or sold at the Uniform Swap Meet.

Any old (clean and undamaged) uniforms can be donated to charity via the yellow sulo bins located at the front entry gates near admin. Thank you to our lovely parents who sort and arrange these old uniforms to be donated to a charity in need. We appreciate your me spent on this ac vity.

Containers for Change

Infant Jesus P&F has now registered for a Scheme ID for Containers for Change. You can take your eligible cans, bo les and containers to your nearest recycling centre and our school can earn 10c for every item deposited. Save this Barcode into your phone/device and scan it at the recycling centre to donate your money to Infant Jesus School.

MAD Camp 2022 Mother and Daughter camp is scheduled for the weekend of Friday 25th Sunday 27th March at Point Walter Recrea on Centre.

We are looking for dedicated mums to join the organising commi ee.

Commi ee members can have a daughter(s) in any year level. The rst MAD camp mee ng will be held on Tuesday 30th November at 7pm at The Russell Inn (front beer garden area).

All Star Rock Band Performance At Infant Jesus School our students are always achieving great things. Four of our Year 5 boys (Andres, Finn, Naethan, and Sam) a end rock music training outside the school and have formed a rock band.

The band will deliver its inaugural performance on Saturday, 11th of December 2021 as part of the 2021 Music Rock nale concert jointly presented by Music Rock Australia and Kwik Kopy CanningValue. The band’s session is expected to kick o at 2.25 pm (Session #9).
