From the Principal Dear Parents With one day of Semester One 2022 to go, we re ect on a very interes ng semester. During this term, with the improving situa on and changes during the pandemic, the whole school communica on and no ces has decreased, hopefully, making it easier for all families.

NAIDOC Week 2022

We con nue to be aware of COVID-19 but are very grateful that there is usually a strong and rela vely quick recovery from the virus. Adhering to the ongoing health advice and no ces enable all members of the community to maintain awareness, considera on and thought in all that we do to keep ourselves and those in our community safe. Thank you to all the parents and families for your support throughout this semester. I especially recognise all parents for their posi vity, though ulness, pa ence, adaptability and calmness which enables all children to con nue to ourish every day at school.

Semester One

Thank you to the children who con nue to #ExpectGreatThings of themselves and others. They have responded extremely well to all the challenges of Semester One 2022. Their posi vity, empathy, willingness to a empt new tasks and learning all contribute to being mo vated and engaged in the learning.

Contemporary Learners

Sincere thank you to the very dedicated sta . Much of the posi vity, adaptability and collabora on is due to the daily enthusiasm and e ort of all the sta in maintaining learning con nuity for the children and administra on of the school for families. As within the community sta have also had to recover, at mes, from the COVID-19 virus.

Whole School Mass

The commitment of the sta is evident and they have viewed these interes ng mes as opportuni es to develop and enhance their exper se, their knowledge, their skills to improve outcomes for the students and further develop the school.

During the year, parents have had many opportuni es to share their child's learning journey though work added to the digital por olio on Seesaw. At the end of Term One the ParentTeacher Interviews also provided very valuable informa on regarding the development and progress of each child.

At this me we also farewell two sta members who are leaving Infant Jesus School. Mrs Cheryl Macpherson has been a sta member since July 2000. For over two decades she has been the rst ‘face’ or ‘voice’ of welcome that sta and families have received when coming to our school. During her me here there have been many families, more than 1500 children and more than 150 sta . Cheryl is always nurturing, calm, professional, helpful, kind, gentle, caring and pa ent and has great empathy for everyone in the community from the children, to the sta and to the families. Her organisa on, posi vity, support for the school, reliability, exibility, enthusiasm and openness to learning have greatly assisted our school and all in the Infant Jesus School community. Cheryl’s ‘genuineness’ and impact is evident in all her interac ons every day at school. Cheryl commences her re rement a er her last day tomorrow. We wish her all the very best, but hope that she will return every now and then in a relief role.

Miss Fay Yang’s last day at Infant Jesus School is also tomorrow. Next term, Fay is con nuing her teaching career in New Zealand which is a wonderful opportunity for her. We wish Fay all the best and know that she will will nd teaching in New Zealand both ful lling and rewarding.

Today we gathered for a Eucharis c Celebra on in the School Hall led by Fr Greg. It was a very memorable celebra on where as a school community we gave thanks to God for the many blessings we have received this semester at school and in our lives. We also prayed for and re ected on the many contribu ons that Mrs Cheryl Macpherson has made in more than twenty years at Infant Jesus School.

Sharing the Learning Journey

At this me of the year, in addi on to the Semester One Report, each child will also con nue share their work through their digital por olio. The por olio is an individual record of the learning and progress of each Kindergarten to Year Six student, from the beginning of the year. As the children share their achievements through the work included in their por olio parents are encouraged to assist in this process by providing wri en or verbal feedback. Comments and feedback from parents in each student’s por olio are very important and greatly assist in strengthening the partnership between home and school and provide addi onal mo va on and encouragement for the children in their learning journey. Tomorrow, Friday 1 July 2022 from 3.00pm, all parents will also be able to access their child’s Semester One 2022 Report.

Therefore, the conversa ons that parents have with their child/children are cri cal and would include re ec ng on the work shared in the Semester One Report, the Student Por olio, through Seesaw and in class. As you take me to sit and discuss your child’s report and por olio, look for areas for celebra on and areas for encouragement by Focusing on strengths. Look for strengths rst even if they are not in the tradi onal 3Rs or core subjects. Taking into account your child’s e ort and a tude to learning. If your child is pu ng in the required e ort this is to be recognised and celebrated. If the report or por olio work indicates that more e ort is required then this is something to work on next semester. Broadening your focus away from academic performance to form a picture of your child’s progress as a member of a social se ng. How your child collaborates with their peers will in uence their happiness, mo va on and well-being. The skills of independence, co-opera on and organisa on are also highly valued for future learning. Taking note of student self-re ec on. Children are generally very honest and will give a realis c assessment of their progress. They are generally very percep ve so discussing their opinions regarding their strengths and areas for improvement is valuable. Taking note of teachers’ comments. Teacher comments are very important and should be used as ‘indicators’ in areas where child/ren may work towards improving. A collaborate approach between home and school greatly assists in each child’s development and learning.

Contemporary Learners A contemporary learning approach is personalised, responding to the learning needs, interests and experiences of each student. Contemporary learning aims to empower students with the knowledge, skills and capaci es to respond crea vely to the challenges of their world.

Today’s world promises new educa onal opportuni es for our students and we strive to develop and enhance new technologies and learning styles that will empower all children to ourish. fl

It is a privilege and a very humbling experience to personally read just over 450 reports. I have been very impressed with the level of e ort that the students are applying to their work. This semester with the many changes and challenges the children con nue to #ExpectGreatThings of themselves, have maintained their e ort and engaged in very important and rewarding learning. Next semester children use their knowledge, skills and all that they have learnt to con nue to #ExpectGreatThings and #ExceedExpecta ons.

At Infant Jesus School, we believe in: • Providing opportuni es for children to work in exible learning spaces that accommodate their individual learning styles. • Encouraging movement and interac on where the role of the teacher facilitates and supports learning. • Children making decisions and choices to suit their learning needs. • A rich curriculum that engages the contemporary learner. • Children working independently and collabora vely and taking ownership of their ac ons. • A culture of learning that builds capacity to deepen insight and meaning. • A pedagogy designed to empower the learner. • A learning community built on strong partnerships that connect, challenge and collaborate to #ExpectGreatThings Every learning space, both indoors and outdoors, and easily accessible with technology used to support our contemporary learners.

Caring for our Community Lifelink Thank you to parents for your support with Crazy Hair Day and for your very generous dona ons to assist those in need in our Archdiocese. St Vincent de Paul Thank you to everyone for your generous dona ons to assist those in need in a very prac cal way. We have collected a signi cant amount of food and essen als that St Vincent de Paul will distribute to those in need in Perth.

NAIDOC Week Na onal NAIDOC Week celebra ons are held across Australia in the rst week of July each year to celebrate and recognise the rich history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Na ons cultures and histories and par cipate in celebra ons of the oldest, con nuous living cultures on earth. This year’s NAIDOC Week theme is Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! In the spirit of reconcilia on, we all must con nue to get up, stand up and show up for systemic change. Whether it’s seeking proper environmental, cultural and heritage protec ons, Cons tu onal change, a comprehensive process of truth-telling, working towards trea es, or calling out racism – we must do it together.

I’m fortunate to have the exibility that allows me to spend a great deal of me with my children. However, my nine year old daughter wants to spend more me with me. My eleven year old son, on the other hand, is content either way.

Australia ranks rst According to a recent study Australian parents rank number one among OECD countries (including most of Europe, North America, the UK and Finland) when it comes to spending me with their kids. The lion's share of this me is s ll invested by mums, but Australian dads are ahead of those from many other countries, averaging around 70 minutes a day with their children. The researchers also found that it’s quality, not quan ty of me children spend with parents that’s important for their emo onal wellbeing, achievement and behaviour for kids aged 3-11 years. The researchers concluded that volume of me doesn’t ma er. It’s much more important how me is spent with your children when you are together. It’s about making the most of the family me you have and reducing feelings of stress for you if you can’t be around as much as you’d like to be. Here are some ideas to help make sure you op mise the me you spend with your kids: · Create a tradi on of one-on-one me with each of your kids around an ac vity that you both enjoy, such as a cafe catch up over a milkshake, shoo ng hoops or playing a favourite board game. Read regularly to each other, as these are special mes of connec on, especially in bed at night.

·

Eat meals together as a family so you can all catch up and connect this is worth its weight in gold when it comes to quality me.

·

Pay a en on to your children, watching for cues that they’re in need of extra me with you.

·

Adolescents bene t from spending extra me with their parents. Through interac ons with their parents teenagers can learn to make be er decisions about their health, improve their academic achievement and experience be er wellbeing.

·

Take an interest in their interests. Connect with your children through the ac vi es that they value such as music, sport or games, even if they aren't hobbies you don't normally enjoy. Your kids will appreciate you making the e ort and will respond accordingly.

·

Be present when you’re with your kids. Research shows our minds can wander up to 47% of the me when we are with our loved ones. If you're present with our kids, you won’t miss out on nearly half of that precious me.

·

Be mindful of the importance of unstructured me for kids. That is, me they spend playing alone or with siblings and friends. Play is essen al for our kids’ wellbeing and development. Play changes as our kids grow up, but as long as whatever they’re doing is child-led, it’s play.

Prayer At the end of this semester we give thanks to God: We are grateful for our classmates, teachers, parents and a community that cares for us. For all the teaching and learning that has taken place in our school, both in and out of the classroom, For the talents and gi s that have been shared and the challenges that have been faced; For the respect and care that has been given. We give thanks for the friendships that have just begun and for those that have grown. For the faith that has been lived in our daily struggles, For the hope that has li ed our hearts, And for the love that has kept us going. Be with us as we spend our me with family and friends. Give us strength and courage to do what is right; to be witnesses of our faith. Help us to be a prac cal Chris an these holidays, to appreciate what others do for us, to generously give me and e ort to help others, to be peacemakers in our family. Keep us safe in our ac vi es; During the break may we all have a good rest and good fun and always be safe in all our ac vi es. Pour out your love on us that we may return renewed and refreshed to con nue our journey together. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen

Best wishes for a safe, relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

In the Church calendar the me we are in now is Ordinary Time, symbolised by the colour green. It is a me for us to look at what happens outside of all the big, exci ng events in the year and in our lives. Stored away inside us is a great poten al to turn the ordinary in to something extraordinary. We o en think that who we are and what ft

ti

We Are Called

we do isn’t that special. We are just ordinary people doing ordinary things. It is good to stop and remember that we are in fact very special, made in God’s image, not in the Creator’s shadow. The green of ordinary me becomes then a signal for our growth into some of what might be God’s plan for us. environmentally sustainable lifestyle, taking inspira on from our young people who are resolutely commi ed to this,” he said. Hidden inside us is the power to be something extraordinary, a creator of extraordinary things, an image of God to others. We nish by drawing on the wisdom of other ordinary people who accomplished extraordinary things in their lives and call us to the same mission.

Chinese 中⽂

How do I say my body parts? 介绍我的身体 The focus for this semester in Year Three and Four has been on introducing the students to di erent body parts. They can use colours and sizes to describe their body parts. It has been very exci ng to see students ac vate their prior learning by bringing their family members into their sentences to describe di erent body parts. Students learnt to deepen their skills in verbalising, transla ng and labelling di erent parts of the body. An ac vity that the students thoroughly enjoyed was crea ng an alien. By allowing them to create their own aliens, students could consolidate their learning by describing how many arms, legs, eyes their aliens had in Chinese. It was de nitely pleasing too see some incorporate the use of colours to extend their descrip ons.

Class News Health Emo ons During Term Two, the Pre-Primary students have been learning all about di erent emo ons. We have learnt that some mes our emo ons get really big and mixed up and we have learnt how to separate, name them and regulate them. The Scribble Spots and Colour Monsters have taught us about each emo on. We read about them, drew them, watched the songs and discussed each emo on in di erent se ngs. We talked about how they make us feel and what we can do to help us to calm down. We can use breathing techniques, yoga, reading, spending me to ourselves, drawing, colouring, sport, a hug from a loved one or listening to music to help us regulate our emo ons. Scribble Spots Red-Angry Blue-Sad Orange-Courageous/Strong Yellow-Happy Green-Calm Grey-Anxious Pink-Love Scribble-Mixed emo ons We discussed that we have a network of trusted people who can help us when our emo ons need untangling like the Scribble Spot.

Health News Health The Year Five students had an amazing excursion to the Constable Care Bike Safety School, on Friday June 17. Students explored a realis c scale environment of Perth streets as both a pedestrian and cyclist. Students had to also navigate working railway crossings, roundabouts and pedestrian crossings. Inside the Safety School Classroom, students used augmented reality on iPads to make decisions about how to solve road safety problems. A compe ve ‘Guess the Road Noise’ ended with noisy pedestrians storming the streets of the Safety School and causing hold ups for the bike riders. The hard work students completed during Term 1, to learn all about bike safety, was on full show. Students got straight into checking their bike and helmet and were very quick to answer any bike safety ques ons. Hopefully, more Year Five students will be con dent and inspired to get on their bike and ride around their neighbourhood or even to school.
