Vale Fr Tadgh Fr Tadgh was born in Borrisokane, Tipperary, Ireland in 1941. He was always a proud Irishman, a professed Carmelite friar for 61 years and a Catholic priest for 55 years. With his relaxed style and gi for friendship he was a much-loved priest and a dedicated teacher who brought Scriptural scholarship and Carmelite spirituality to life throughout his years in Infant Jesus Parish, Morley.

Pre-Kindergarten

Research iden es that parents and the broader community play a vital role in suppor ng successful learning outcomes for our children and the most meaningful partnerships are those where schools, parents, students and the community work together to focus on student learning. Parent and community engagement that is e ec vely focused on student learning can deliver powerful outcomes enabling all children to be successful.

At Infant Jesus School parents are encouraged to play an ac ve role in the educa on of their children and the Parent-Teacher Mee ngs this week provide an ideal forum in which to discuss the children/s progress so far this year and also help enrich the learning opportuni es for students by building partnerships between home and school.

Whole School Ini a ves

As the ParentTeacher Mee ngs at this me of the year are an important part of the repor ng process at Infant Jesus School these have been provided through a call this week. We greatly value the involvement of parents and this is one of many ways that we can con nue to share student progress.

During this week some pieces of work have also been shared with parents through the digital por olio. The work in the por olio enables parents to see the progress during the year. With the digital por olio ini a ve introduced for Pre-Primary to Year 6 parents are able to view this document at any me. In these mes we see this as very suppor ve in con nuing to track the progress of their child, very exible as it can be viewed at any me and very sustainable as this record can be saved and easily stored online to be viewed for many years.

In both the Parent-Teacher Mee ngs and the crea on of digital por olios, class teachers have once again been very commi ed and adaptable in calling and providing important informa on to every parent in the class regarding the progress of their child and have also coordinated and successfully implemented a new ini a ve with the digital por olio.

I wish to sincerely thank and congratulate all the teachers for their calmness, enthusiasm and exper se in con nuing to implement plans that enable children to ourish. Parents At this me there is also much apprecia on for the parents and families for their considera on, empathy and posi ve approach in responding to the various COVID-19 cases that we have had at school since the rst week.

During this term the communica on to families has included many updates and more to come. As principal, I also receive updates every other day with changing regula ons and procedures to be implemented. Thank you for your pa ence and your understanding that it is not me or the school making the changes but WA Health. The reason for the revised rules (updates) is to keep schools open and opera onal, while coordina ng this with the health and safety of the wider WA community.

Parents have been very understanding and coopera ve which has enabled the spread to be ‘contained’ and educa on at Infant Jesus School to con nue.

The Department of Health (WA Health) and the Department of Educa on have considered the importance of providing face-to-face learning to students for their educa onal, social and emo onal development, physical and mental wellbeing in determining the changes throughout the term for all schools in Western Australia.

On Monday we received the very sad news that Fr Tadgh a beloved and long standing member of our Parish and School Community had passed away.

Fr Tadgh has long been involved with the faith journey of the Infant Jesus School community. In recent years he visited children in the classrooms to listen to them and to share his faith knowledge, he led us in prayer and celebrated many Masses and liturgies at school and at Infant Jesus Church and he always supported our sta o en joining us for morning tea and social gatherings. He had a wonderful and gi of always having me for every one and always having an experience or connec on that drew us all into the conversa on.

Having travelled and worked for many years in he was a wealth of knowledge and could enrich and entertain us with his many stories.

Fr Tadgh also loved everything Irish, including sharing ‘stories’ from home with the sta and our community.

As a community we have many happy memories of Fr Tadgh and we were privileged to be involved in his 80th birthday celebra ons last year.

Some photos of Fr Tadgh and his valuable contribu ons to our community over the years have been included in the newsle er.

This year Holy Week takes place during the rst week of the holidays. It is a special me to commemorate the last days of the life of Jesus by focusing on Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. ti

Community

Palm Sunday is the nal Sunday of Lent and the beginning of Holy Week. It commemorates the triumphant arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem, days before Good Friday.

Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus, when he got up from the table and washed the feet of his disciples and shared the Eucharist for the rst me before he was arrested. At this me Jesus asked his followers to celebrate the Eucharist in his memory. Today, as his followers, we remember Jesus and his message as we con nue to celebrate the Eucharist.

Good Friday solemnly commemorates the Passion and cruci xion of Jesus. From the earliest days of Chris anity, Mass has not been celebrated on Good Friday. People experience what it is like to be without Jesus from the Mass of the Last Supper un l the Easter Vigil Mass on Holy Saturday. During Good Friday people may pray the Sta ons of the Cross to re ect on Jesus’ journey on this day.

Holy Saturday evening marks the beginning of the celebra on of the resurrec on of Jesus. The Mass on Holy Saturday evening is a joy- lled celebra on of the Resurrec on of Jesus. During the Mass Jesus’ followers are reminded that Jesus is the light and that they are called to share his light and bring the light of Jesus to others through their words and ac ons.

Easter, the feast of the resurrec on is the greatest celebra on of the Chris an Church and is the most important occasion in the Church year. At Easter, the Church celebrates the new life given to us in Jesus’ death and resurrec on. The

resurrec on is the reason for our faith, hope and courage. Through the resurrec on of Jesus, we know that we, one day, will rise to new life, too.

Lifelong Learners Each day it is great to see the enthusiasm and engagement of the students as they become lifelong learners. At school, we always #ExpectGreatThings of each other and our students apply this to their learning and to all ac vi es and interac ons each day. It is demonstrated in their work across all the learning areas which include Religious Educa on, English, Mathema cs, Visual Arts, HASS, Technologies, Health, Chinese, Science, Music and Physical Educa on.

There is much to learn, to remember and to use in our journey as life-long learners. As a school we work collabora vely to foster the children’s spiritual, cogni ve, physical, social and emo onal learning and growth.

At Infant Jesus School, children are taught to become lifelong learners by focusing on informa on literacy skills, inquiry and research processes. So far this year many experiences have been provided to both engage children and to con nue their educa onal journey. These experiences have included celebra ng Chinese New Year, Twosday and St Patrick’s Day, re ec ng on how we all belong during Harmony Day and having some year levels and classes access remote learning.

Children con nue to think crea vely during COVID-19 mes and have developed some ideas to raise funds for Project Compassion. It is fantas c to see their enthusiasm as life-long learners.

School ini a ves We recognised that children at Infant Jesus School have many gi s and talents. We con nue to provide them with many unique opportuni es two of which are i-Hour for Year 4 -6 students and iPerform for Year 1 – 3 students. Each term children are selected and excitedly par cipate in these ini a ves.

The planning of these ini a ves enables children to be crea ve and further develops their gi s and talents over a ten week period.

The children will be sharing their fantas c work through their performances (i-Perform) and designs (movies) digitally with families. In our classes we are looking forward to viewing (digitally) their work before the end of the term.

Welcome We welcome Mrs Leonie Cornish to the Infant Jesus School sta . Leonie works in the Early Childhood area of our school in Kindergarten. Leonie worked in a relief role at the beginning of the year which assisted in the transi on to joining our sta . We hope Leonie nds her me here rewarding and ful lling.

Term Two Calendar Monday 25 April 2022 is ANZAC Day and a Public Holiday.

Winter Uniform – Term Two Just a reminder that Winter Uniform is worn in Term Two and Three at Infant Jesus School.

The Year 1-6 Boys’ Winter Uniform consists of a short or long sleeve blue shirt with the Infant Jesus school e, navy blue trousers and Infant Jesus School navy socks.

The girls Winter Uniform is the Infant Jesus School e with a short or long sleeve blue shirt.

Girls in Years 1-3 may wear the navy check pinafore or navy blue trousers. Girls in Year 4-6 may wear a navy check skirt OR navy blue trousers. Navy ghts or white school socks are to be worn

Kindergarten 2023 – Applica ons are Now Due Enrolments are now being taken for siblings and new students wishing to commence Kindergarten at Infant Jesus School in 2023. Families with children eligible for Kindergarten in 2023 (born from July 2018 to June 2019) are required to ll out an Infant Jesus School Applica on Form.

Infant Jesus School will con nue to operate two concurrent Kindergarten groups next year with the days of a endance being Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Kindergarten places are limited so it is important that parents within the Infant Jesus School community submit their applica ons as soon as possible. Forms can be obtained from the o ce.

Pre-Kindergarten 2022 This term, the Pre-Kindergarten children commenced the whole day program. This program will be in place for the remainder of the school year.

It is a very exci ng me for all these children and the Pre-Kindy sta , Mrs Limerick and Mrs Boogard.

The half-day program con nues unchanged and takes place each Thursday morning.

From my readings The holidays commence at the end of next week – a wonderful me to be out of the rou ne of school and to relax and refresh for the term ahead. The following ideas may assist families during the holidays.

Encourage kids to occupy themselves

by Michael Grose Paren ng Ideas A child’s ability to ll in their own me and cope with moments of boredom are important independence skills to develop. Children have less prac se at keeping themselves occupied than those of past genera ons. You have many jobs as a parent, but constantly entertaining your child, should not be one of them. These ideas will help: Invite them to keep themselves busy When your child tells you that he or she is bored they are bringing you a problem to solve. Boredom is your child’s problem, not yours. If this happens, encourage your child to keep themselves busy by asking ques ons such as “How can you keep yourself amused?”

Make a list If your child is stuck for ideas make a list of ac vi es that

Make a boredom buster jar Cut up a list of boredom bus ng ac vi es and place them in a jar. When your child is stuck for an idea to keep him or herself amused invite them to select an ac vity from the boredom buster jar. Ask your child to add enjoyable ac vi es to the jar over me.

Encourage plenty of green- me Today’s children spend more me in front of screens, and less me outdoors than those of previous genera ons. Not only is me spent in natural environments refreshing, relaxing and rejuvena ng, but It’s also a wonderful way for kids to relieve boredom. Encourage your child to spend some of their free me outside in natural environments to promote good mental health and develop their con dence.

Help nd their interests If your child struggles to keep him or herself occupied, consider helping them iden fy a hobby or interest that they enjoy. O en nding that one ac vity a child loves or excels in makes a huge di erence to their self-esteem and wellbeing, and can become the driver for future career choice.

Build in down me A trait common among healthy families is the propensity for everyone to enjoy spending down me or unstructured me together. It’s during down me that parents and children share ac vi es together, which promotes be er rela onships and helps children’s informal learning.

Most children when given unstructured me will rise to the occasion (even a er some complaining) and will nd interes ng things to do. By encouraging them to nd something “to do”, other than lling their me with screen-based ac vi es, you are promo ng a fabulous life-skill in your kids.

Harmony Day Thank you to all the families for suppor ng Harmony Day. Infant Jesus School was a sea of orange. It was amazing to see all the orange out ts and the crea ve ways students incorporated orange in to their everyday uniform. In their classrooms, students par cipated in various Harmony Day ac vi es which supported the theme of everyone belonging.

Schools are special communi es.

They exist purely for the growth and care of young people and they are held together by trus ng rela onships. When a death occurs in a school the impact can be enormous. Children have li le understanding of their own emo ons and limited ability to selfregulate. So, it is vital that the adults in the community are well prepared and equipped.

When children grieve Children can feel grief and loss over the same things as adults, e.g: • a parent or family member dying • parents separa ng or the family breaking up • the loss of a friend or friendship • moving house or changing schools • having a disability • being in hospital • the loss of a pet • loss of culture and homeland when moving to a new country • loss related to crises, e.g. re, ood, accident or other community tragedy (see Parent Easy Guide ‘Dealing with a crisis’).

Children can also grieve over things that seem small to adults but are big to them, e.g. losing a special toy, comforter or other possession.

Preschool children In the preschool years children don’t understand that death is forever. They feel grief when they lose someone close to them. The impact of the loss may be greater because they don’t really understand what’s happening. They don’t understand what is real and what is not real and may think they have caused what happened. They may be more clingy and needy and have trouble separa ng from you.

Early Primary School Children are beginning to learn that death is permanent and to realise that when someone dies they are not coming back. Some children may feel responsible for the death or separa on and think it was because of something they did. They may also worry about who will look a er them. If they have lost a parent they may worry about losing the other parent as well. They may be very ma er-of-fact in the way they talk about death and want lots of informa on such as what happens to the body. They may need to hear what has happened many mes over. They may not know what it is they are feeling or have the words to say how they feel. They may show their feelings in their behaviour and play.

Children now understand that death is permanent. They can also understand why death happens, e.g. because of illness, accident or old age. They can talk about their feelings be er although they might not always do so. They are less likely to blame themselves for what has happened but they might blame others, e.g. blame one parent for a divorce. They have a strong sense of right and wrong and might have strong views about what has happened. They may be interested in life a er death and ask ques ons about it. They may s ll want to know all the facts about what happens to the body or details of an accident.

We Are Called The Annuncia on of the Lord Last week, we gathered online as a school community to recognise the Annuncia on of the Lord.

The Feast of the Annuncia on is celebrated on March 25 every year. On the Feast of the Annuncia on, we

celebrate the day that the Angel Gabriel visited the Virgin Mary announcing that she was going to be the mother of Jesus. Even though Mary did not understand completely, she trusted God’s plan for her life, and she said yes to becoming the mother of God and our mother.

The words of the “Hail Mary” come from the Angel’s gree ng: “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.”

God’s grace lives in each one of us, but Mary was full of grace because she was born without any Original Sin. This year, Pope Francis asked all Catholics to also pray to Mother Mary for peace in Ukraine and Russia.

During the third week of Lent we listened to the Project Compassion story of Janice, a Wagilak woman and tradi onal dancer who tells her family’s stories through movements handed down over genera ons.

Like many remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communi es, Janice’s faces a range of challenges – low employment and educa on, nancial hardship, poorer health and lower life expectancy.

With your help, Caritas Australia supports Djilpin Arts Aboriginal Corpora on, which operates a centre for tradi onal and contemporary Aboriginal arts and culture, providing employment and genera ng income for local communi es.

Janice believes that Djilpin Arts’ work is essen al to create opportuni es for young people to stay oncountry, to share intergenera onal knowledge between elders and the younger genera on - to promote healing, and to keep culture alive.

This week through Project Compassion we learnt about Rosalie, who lives with her husband and seven children in the Democra c Republic of Congo. Forced to join the army when she was just 15-years-old, Rosalie experienced signi cant trauma and hardship during her years in the military. A er she was demobilised from the army, Rosalie, like other ex-combatants, was le to fend for herself in the community.

With your generous support and through Caritas Australia's partners, the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD) and Caritas Bukavu, Rosalie was able to connect with other members of her community and par cipate in business skills training to help her to reintegrate into society.

She joined a savings group which helped her with a loan to start her own small business selling second-hand shoes and natural remedies.

“I can eat, dress, maintain my health and help others. My children study and manage to eat twice a day. I have learnt to work hand-in-hand with other members of the community. Really, there is more joy in sharing with others.” Rosalie Watch a short lm about Rosalie’s story here.

Sustainability To maintain a sustainable school environment, we have been collec ng recyclable items at Recess/Lunch and from classrooms.

Wellness We have been promo ng ac vi es that make us well, while also ensuring the students have access to sports equipment each day.

Media As Apple Dis nguished School students, we have used our knowledge to create many videos on presenta ons which showcase all that we do at Infant Jesus School.

Science Physical Sciences

We have had a hands on term of learning across all year levels at Infant Jesus School in the iLab. Students have explored how light travels through di erent mediums and how heat transfers through conduc on. Students have discovered fric on as an opposing force and how objects move through air, water and on land.

Science Colour changing celery!

In Pre-Primary, we have been learning about what a plant needs to stay alive. One of the most important things a plant needs to survive is water, so we did an experiment using coloured water and celery. We put the celery in coloured water and then waited a week to see what changes would happen.

We were able to see at the bo om of the plant where the water had been drawn up from the cup and we could see the colour in the leaves! The children were so excited to see just how much colour was in the leaves at the end of our experiment.

Health Healthy Ea ng In Pre-Primary Health we have been learning about how to keep our bodies healthy.

We have learnt how to eat the rainbow, thinking of colourful fruit and vegetables that are good for our bodies.

In this ac vity we chose colourful fruits to make a rainbow fruit kebab. We made sure we washed our hands and safely collected the fruit using spoons onto our own plates.

We had red strawberries, orange oranges, yellow banana, blue blueberries and green grapes.

We thought our rainbow fruit kebabs were delicious!

The Year Five students have been learning about bike safety in prepara on for an excursion to the ‘Constance Care Safety School’. This excursion has had to be postponed to later in the year but that hasn’t stopped the students from experiencing bike safety.

Students have perfected the 2-2-2 method of correctly ng a bicycle helmet. A erce debate was had, with students arguing for and against some safety strategies to keep kids safe on bicycles.

Bicycle laws in WA were explored with students nding out the consequences for not wearing a helmet or having a warning device. Students have also ac ng out using correct signalling, when riding on the road.

The last task that the Year Five students will complete is crea ng a poster campaign to encourage more Infant Jesus School students to ride to school.

Music

Music In Music, we have focused on learning new rhythms through body movement, percussion instruments and body percussion.

Students have learnt how to play, clap, tap and say the rhythms. They have also wri en them out.

They have learnt the rules about playing an instrument in class and have sung the Solfege. We use the xylophone as a way of rela ng melody lines to the notes mi, so and la.

During the term, we also had a few students that obtained the Music award for excelling in their rhythm assessment.

iPerform For iPerform this term, students have enjoyed exploring drama skills through the art of voice projec on, manipula on in tone and focusing on being in character.

In Year One, the children recited the story of “The Fox and the Grapes”, a story that shows the importance of having good a tude with resilience.

The Year Two students performed, “Town Mouse and Country Mouse” and the Year Three students are showed us their version of “Hansel and Gretel”.

⽔果和颜⾊ Fruit and Colours In Year Three this term, students have been working hard to learn ten di erent colours and fruits, along with how to apply them to mul ple sentences.

The students were super excited to learn this new topic and displayed great enthusiasm in all aspects! They came up with di erent ways to help them remember the colours and fruits in their own words. It was such a pleasure to hear the, come up with something crea ve! For example, some students remember 红⾊ hóng sè as horn on the race bull.

During each ac vity, students could focus on certain skills.

Through weekly rota ons, the improvement and increase in mo va on of each student has been very pleasing to witness.

Sport Freo Fundamentals Program Over the last three weeks the Pre Primary and Year 1 students have been taking part in the Freo Fundamentals Football Program. This program involves players from both the Fremantle Dockers AFLW and AFL team conduc ng a 40-minute fundamental movement session for three consecu ve weeks. Freo Fundamentals has been designed to match the needs of young students and develop competency in fundamental play skills within the WA Curriculum Framework Outcomes. We were fortunate to have Dana, Immi and Ryan from the Fremantle Dockers AFLW and AFL teams teaching the children how to catch and pick up a moving football…..we have some budding football stars in Pre Primary and Year 1!!

Year 4-6 Cricket Spor ng Schools Program Last week the Year 4-6 students concluded the Cricket Spor ng Schools program. This is a 4week program conducted by Cricket Australia and is made up of prac cal cricket ac vi es that focus on fun, tness and friends with the aim of increasing the par cipant’s con dence and competence in the sport of Cricket. Jesse Liddle, from Cricket Australia, came out and led each session of the program. The students showed great enthusiasm and enjoyment whilst par cipa ng in these fun ac vi es.

Infant Jesus Stars Congratula ons to Carmen De Mello (6B) who aimed to swim 32kms in the month of February to raise money for the Starlight Founda on.

Carmen smashed her goal by swimming just over 36km and raised over $2000! Well done Carmen, a tremendous e ort!

Healthy Ea ng Vegetables This year, the Infant Jesus School community is pu ng a spotlight on healthy ea ng. Students have dedicated ea ng me at recess and lunch and we are endeavouring to maximise the healthiness of that ea ng me. But we need your help!

Our rst focus is to increase our student’s VEGETABLE INTAKE. Students should be ge ng 5 serves of vegetables a day. Unfortunately, only 1 in 16 children are ge ng the correct amount of daily vegetable servings.

Here are some ps for packing more vegetables into your kids lunchbox: -Fill sandwiches with extra vegetables- grated carrots, capsicum, le uce, tomatoes, sprouts or broccoli -Use le over vegetables and make vegetables mu ns or fri ers -Swap the chip packet for crunchy s cks of carrot, celery, cucumber or capsicum. No Stopping Areas

Areas in and around schools present potential parking problems as there may be speeding motorists,busy roads and limited parking bays.

The City of Bayswater Officers conduct regular school parking patrols during school times and are happy to help with any parking concerns your school may have.

We can attend your school to remind parents about safe parking and follow up by issuing infringements if needed.

• Parking over footpaths

No Stopping areas can be defined by signage or a continuous yellow line painted along the edge of a road. A driver is not permitted to stop on a length of road or in an area to where no stopping restrictions apply. Vehicles may only stop in these zones to comply with other regulations (for example at traffic lights or to avoid an accident). Drivers are not permitted to drop off passengers or goods in “No Stopping” areas.
