DEAR PARENTS During Holy Week, the final week of Lent, the Church sets apart an en;re week to recall the events of the last week of Jesus’ life – where he suffered, died and rose to new life aBer three days. The week is Holy because it is considered to be set apart for God who is Holy. This special ;me begins with Palm Sunday and concludes with Holy Saturday.

To reflect on this week in Jesus’ life we have gathered together each morning to remember and to pray. We have reflected on Palm Sunday, Jesus teaching about The Temple, The Sermon on the Mount, Holy Thursday and Good Friday.

Jesus loved his friends so much that he taught them many important lessons about how to serve others by showing love and care to all people. As Jesus’ ;me on earth was coming to an end, he knew that he did not have much ;me leB to be with his friends. He wanted his friends to learn a very important lesson in order to spread his teachings throughout the world. They needed to learn how to serve God, each other and the new followers of Jesus.

In a few days we celebrate Easter – the highlight of the Church’s year and the most important of all Chris;an feasts. Everything that Jesus said and did is only given meaning by his Resurrec;on.

The ligh;ng of the Easter candle in a dark church symbolises that Jesus is the light of the world. That light is passed from one person to the next. There is great joy at Easter because of the hope that Jesus has given people and the Good News that is alive through us today.

Just as the women found Jesus has risen and shared this good news with his followers we con;nue to share the same Good News with others each day by being grateful, hope-filled and through our words and ac;ons, following the example of Jesus.

Thank you for your generous dona;ons to Project Compassion. As a school community we raised over $3900.

cloaks on top of the colt and Jesus began to ride into Jerusalem. This was very important because many years ago one of the prophets said that the king would come riding on a donkey.

Many people had heard about Jesus. They knew he had taught great things and that he had performed many miracles. He had made sick people well and made blind people see again. He even made a dead person come back to life.

The people began to do things like they do when a king rides in a parade. They shouted praises to Jesus as he passed by. They said very good things about him and shouted out how good he was. They shouted “Hosanna to the son of David!” and “Blessed is the King!”

Jesus’ Triumphant Entry Presented by Year One and Year Three Jesus and his disciples travelled to the city of Jerusalem. As they travelled they saw lots and lots of people. It seemed like everyone wanted to go to Jerusalem. All of the Jews wanted to go there for the special Passover celebra2ons.

When Jesus and his friends came to a village just outside of Jerusalem, Jesus stopped to talk to them. He asked two of the disciples to do a special job.

“Go into the village,” Jesus instructed, “and you will see a donkey and its colt. Bring them to me. If anyone says anything or tries to stop you then just say: ‘The Lord needs it’. When you say that no one will try to stop you.”

The two disciples went into the village and guess what they saw? There was a donkey and its colt just as Jesus said. They un2ed the donkeys and began to walk away.

Some people were standing nearby and they called out, “Hey, what are you doing with that colt?”

The disciples said just what Jesus said to say, “The Lord needs them.” When they said that the people let them go.

It was just like Jesus said it would be.

away and caused the money that people were chea2ng with to fall all over the ground. Jesus said, “Get those things out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!”

Before this everyone was thinking about money and the market.

Now, at last, people had 2me to stop and think about what Jesus had been teaching. It was 2me to love and respect God at his temple just like Jesus did.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple Presented by Year Five Jesus and his disciples travelled from place to place teaching people about God. At the 2me of the special Jewish feast of Passover they traveled to Jerusalem to worship God and take part in special ceremonies at the temple.

Ever since he was a young boy Jesus had been taught by his parents that the temple of God in Jerusalem was a very important place. This was a place where people came to worship God and offer sacrifices. At the temple everyone was supposed to be thinking and talking about God. But when they arrived at the temple it did not seem as if people were there to worship God at all. The people were not trea2ng the temple like a special place of God. Instead, the temple looked like a big market! Animals were making loud noises. Jesus heard caVle, sheep and doves. Some people were exchanging money and trying to cheat people. The people were not thinking about God at all.

Jesus was very sad and angry at the way people were trea2ng God and God’s special place. Jesus is the son of God so the temple was his Father’s house. He loved his father and he loved His Father’s house! Jesus knew he needed to do something very dras2c so that everyone would understand how serious this was.

So Jesus did something that shocked everyone. He 2ed cords of rope together to make a whip to swing around. Then he began swinging the rope and turning over the tables that people had put in the wrong places in the temple. He shooed the birds and animals

By the 2me Jesus leZ many people were talking about him. Some had learned to love God more because of what Jesus said. Some got angry and began to say bad things about Jesus.

Jesus was a good teacher. When people listened to him they learned many important things about God. But Jesus did not just talk about what people should know. He also taught people the best way to live. He taught about worshipping God but he also taught about being kind to people and helping others.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be sa;sfied.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

The Sermon on the Mount

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Presented by Year Two

Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and u?er all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

Once, when Jesus saw a crowd of people, he went up onto the side of a mountain to teach them.

Teachers in those 2mes usually sat down when they were teaching so when Jesus sat down the people gathered around him to hear what he had to say.

The people had heard other teachers and preachers, but they were amazed at what Jesus said to them.

They could tell that Jesus was speaking the truth.

What Jesus said that day was so important that his sermon was wriVen down in our Bibles for all of us to read even many years later. Since he was speaking from the side of a mountain people refer to what he said that day as “The Sermon on the Mount.”

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Jesus then said, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” This was his greatest commandment. If we treat others as we wish to be treated, the world will be a wonderful place.

in Egypt. They ate roasted lamb and they remembered the lamb’s blood that was put on the doorposts in the Old Testament. They drank grape wine and ate unleavened bread.

During the Passover meal Jesus and his disciples were ea2ng the bread. Jesus told them something that made them very sad.

He said, “Someone here is not really my friend. He will do bad things that will make me get into trouble.

One of the ones who is dipping the bread in the bowl with me will betray me.”

The Last Supper

Judas knew that he was the one. Judas did not remember the good things that God had done. Some bad Jews had already given him money to make sure Jesus got in trouble and got arrested. Judas knew that Jesus had never done anything wrong but he said, ‘Yes’ to the Jews because they offered to give him money.

Jesus and his friends wanted to eat the special Passover Meal. Jesus told Peter and John to go into Jerusalem and get things ready for the meal. He did not tell them the place to go. He just told them to follow a man carrying a water jar. That man would take them to the house where they would have a special meal in an upstairs room.

Peter and John did exactly as Jesus said. They followed the man carrying the water jug and he led them to the house where they would have the Passover Meal.

When Jesus and his disciples arrived they ate the Passover Meal together. This was the way that they remembered what had happened long ago in Egypt.

When they ate the meal they also remembered how God took care of his people.

Jesus and the apostles followed all of the special instruc2ons that God had given for the celebra2on.

The soldiers put a big piece of wood from the cross on Jesus’ back and made him carry it. When Jesus got too 2red the soldiers grabbed a man named Simon out of the crowd and made him carry Jesus’ cross.

The soldiers took Jesus to a place called “The Skull” (in other languages this is Calvary or Golgotha). The soldiers took off Jesus’ clothes and cast lots to see who got to keep them. They nailed big nails through Jesus’ wrists and heels to put him on the cross.

The Crucifixion Presented by Year Six Jesus was the Son of God. He was always kind and always chose to do right. But even though Jesus was good there were people who hated him. They did not like it when he said he was the King of the Jews.

Some people hated Jesus so much that they found a way to have him put on trial and sentenced to die on a cross.

AZer his trial the soldiers made fun of Jesus. They put a soldier’s robe on him and put a staff in his hand to make him look like a king. They twisted thorny plants together to make a fake crown and stuck the crown on Jesus’ head. Then they kicked him and spat on him and hit him on the head over and over with the staff.

The soldiers bowed down in front of Jesus and made fun of him by saying, “Hail, the King of the Jews.”

Jesus is the King!

Jesus could have called all of the angels in heaven to come and help him.

He could have called down fire to burn up the soldiers.

He could have even just disappeared.

But Jesus did not do any of those things because he knew that the only way to save everyone from sin was to die on the cross.

Jesus was crucified in between two criminals who had done very bad things. One of the criminals made fun of Jesus but the second criminal told the first to be quiet and said, “You and I did bad things and we deserve to die. This man has not done anything wrong.” The criminal thought that maybe Jesus really was the King of the Jews. He asked Jesus to remember him in his kingdom.

Jesus said to the criminal, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43) Jesus’ mother, Mary stood near the cross along with John, the apostle. Jesus looked at them and said, “Dear woman, here is your son.” To John he said, “Here is your mother.” AZer that day Mary lived at John’s house so he could take care of her. (John 19: 26-27)

The soldiers and rulers s2ll made fun of Jesus. Instead of geing angry, do you know what Jesus did? He prayed for them. He prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34) Jesus knew it was 2me to die.

He only asked for one thing. He looked down from the cross and said, “I am thirsty.” (John 19:28) Someone soaked a sponge with wine vinegar and used a plant stalk to liZ it up to Jesus.

Even though it hurt very much Jesus decided to obey God. S2ll, when he was feeling very lonely, he called out to God, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” That means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (MaVhew 27:46) The soldiers and rulers s2ll made fun of Jesus. Jesus prayed to God, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” (Luke 23:46) Then he cried out in a loud voice, “It is finished” and he bowed his head and died.

(John 19:30) At the moment Jesus died, the great curtain in the temple of Jerusalem tore all the way from the top to boVom all on its own. The earth shook and rocks split.

Tombs opened and many good people came back to life.

One of the Roman soldiers- a centurion in charge of a hundred other soldiers said, “Surely he was the Son of God.”
