From the Principal Dear Families, During the 1me your family is at Infant Jesus School you are always encouraged to engage in the ac1vi1es that take place on numerous occasions during the year. This term there have been many events that parents have supported through their par1cipa1on. We greatly value this involvement as this strengthens the partnership between home and school. Most recently many parents aCended and par1cipated in the many ac1vi1es during Infant Jesus Day. It was fantas1c for parents to join us for the Eucharis2c Celebra2on at Infant Jesus Church. This was a very significant occasion as it was the first 1me we had gathered as whole community since the beginning of last year. During the day children and parents were provided with a fantas1c Sausage Sizzle lunch and were involved in a variety of stalls and the Book Fair during the aGernoon. We are very grateful to the P&F Execu2ve, Vanessa GaJ, Jenny Allpike and Danielle Graham, who co-ordinated all the generous parent volunteers and provided wonderful service in cooking (nearly 1000 sausages) to ensure there was lunch for all.
Donuts with Dad 2021
QCE Awards 2021
Student Code of Conduct
Last week many of our Dads also par1cipated in ‘Donuts with Dad’ before school. Although the weather was quite challenging it was fantas1c to see ‘standing room’ only under the verandahs as donuts, hot tea or coffee or juice and fruit was enjoyed by all. We have some very adaptable Dads who stayed for the Mass that was changed from the Church to the school hall, due to the weather. Some1mes par1cipa1on in school ac1vi1es takes place outside of the school and school 1mes. This week it includes recognising our school by viewing Infant Jesus School entries in the 2021 Quality Catholic School Awards. Par1cipa1on and engagement at school also involves taking an ac1ve role in your child’s learning as parent involvement plays a cri1cal role in your child’s development and our schools’ success. We aim to provide a variety of opportuni1es throughout the year to both support and involve parents. One of these opportuni1es is provided through Learning Journeys which take place for all children from Kindergarten to Year Six next Monday from 3.30pm – 6.00pm
Learning Journeys At Infant Jesus our goal is to develop a community which fosters life-long learning and an aJtude which promotes achievement of full poten1al in an environment embedded in our Gospel values. Our Learning Journey session enables parents, children and the school to come together to support, share and celebrate each child’s learning. At Infant Jesus our Vision for Learning is based on our beliefs that: • Children are competent and bring a wealth of experiences and knowledge to the learning task. • Children are involved in making choices which supports their unique way of learning. • Children are engaged in meaningful and purposeful tasks which include ac1on and reflec1on. The aims of a Learning Journey are: • To allow children to take responsibility and be accountable for their learning. • To help children build reflec1on and goal seJng for their own learning. • To help children develop a love of learning and begin to see themselves as life-long learners. • To encourage a wider range of child/parent communica1on. • To support and further enhance parent communica1on and par1cipa1on in school. • For children to develop pride in their learning. • To encourage communica1on that focuses on learning and development. During the Learning Journey children, according to their level of development, proudly share their progress and achievements with their parents. It is a 1me to reflect and to celebrate the effort that all the children have applied to their work during the year. It is also a 1me for the children to reflect and to share their goals and how they will #ExpectGreatThings of themselves for the remainder of the term and the year. Learning journeys are also a 1me to recognise all teaching staff, teachers and educa1on assistants, who with great care, enthusiasm and exper1se cater for the individual needs of every child. We thank
them for their commitment and dedica1on in suppor1ng our children to be flourishing life long learners. This year in addi1on to the Learning Journey experience in the classroom children will share their learning in other learning areas including Science in the i-Lab, Health, Chinese, Physical Educa1on and Music in the Music Room. The Year 4 to Year 6 students will be showcasing their learning in i-Hour during 2021 with their original and crea1ve designs. During the visit to the School Hall to view the i-Hour showcase/display parents and children will also see the 3D printer in ac1on. This device has provided students with many challenges in crea1ng and coding their designs and using this resource to produce an item that will make the world a beCer place.
QCE Awards 2021 Our school has entered two components of our Infant Jesus School program into the CEWA QCE Awards. This year we have entered in the ‘Faith and the Future' and ‘Catholic Iden1ty’ sec1ons.
Faith in the Future To celebrate 200 Years of Catholic Educa1on, Infant Jesus School celebrated with a Liturgy to acknowledge and celebrate Catholic Educa1on. We gave thanks to the many opportuni1es that Catholic Schools have provided for their staff, students, and families. A video reflec1on was created to showcase the way the school has developed since it was established in 1954. In the aGernoon, students par1cipated in various ac1vi1es some of which involved reflec1ng on their favourite memories of Infant Jesus School. The students had a lot of fun experiencing how school life has improved and are thankful for the many opportuni1es that they receive today.
Catholic Iden2ty The Story in (the) Print’ ini1a1ve was developed to highlight the story of Infant Jesus School and the rich history of the past that inspires us in our journey today and in the future. When redesigning the school uniform, Infant Jesus School turned to the past. The unique summer dress print contains a story within the design and represents both the Dominicans and Carmelites who had significant roles to play in the forma1on of Infant Jesus School. The print provides a daily visual connec1on to the charisms and tradi1ons created when the school was established. Please click on the link below to vote in the People’s Choice for our school’s entries: hTps://awards.cewa.edu.au/nomina2on/our-story-in-print/ hTps://awards.cewa.edu.au/nomina2on/we-journey-together/ Vo1ng for the People's Choice Award will close on Sunday 12 September 2021. Please head to the awards website where you can find informa1on on all of the nomina1ons. Your votes and support are greatly appreciated.
Contemporary Learners
Fr Tadgh
A contemporary learning approach is personalised, responding to the learning needs, interests and experiences of each student. Contemporary learning aims to empower students with the knowledge, skills and capaci1es to respond crea1vely to the challenges of their world.
We congratulate Fr Tadgh who celebrated his 80th birthday yesterday. This week he also celebrates 61 years of his profession as a Carmelite. This is a very significant occasion for Fr Tadgh and all the classes created a card to recognise this very special 1me. The cards will be presented to him at school tomorrow and the Parish have organised a celebra1on for Saturday 11 September.
Today’s world promises new educa1onal opportuni1es for our students and we strive to develop an enhance new technologies and learning styles that will empower all children to flourish. At Infant Jesus School, we believe in: • Providing opportuni1es for children to work in flexible learning spaces that accommodate their individual learning styles. • Encouraging movement and interac1on where the role of the teacher facilitates and supports learning. • Children making decisions and choices to suit their learning needs. • A rich curriculum that engages the contemporary learner. • Children working independently and collabora1vely and taking ownership of their ac1ons. •A culture of learning that builds capacity to deepen insight and meaning. •A pedagogy designed to empower the learner. •A learning community built on strong partnerships that connect, challenge and collaborate to #ExpectGreatThings
Fr Tadgh has had a long associa1on with Infant Jesus School and has been serving Infant Jesus Parish for many years. It is a wonderful 1me to recognise his service in sharing the Good News and his many valuable contribu1ons to our community.
Student Code of Conduct Included in the Safe School Framework sec1on of each NewsleCer is informa1on regarding the CEWA Child Safe Framework and the Code of Conduct. There are twelve Conduct Statements with examples for Staff, Parents, Students, Volunteers and Visitors. The purpose of the Code of Conduct is to describe the minimum standards of conduct in all behaviour and decision making to ensure the safety and well-being of students. In following the CEWA Child Safe Framework recommenda1on and guidelines to support the safety and well-being of all students Infant Jesus School has also developed Infant Jesus School Student Code of Conduct. All students are familiar with the aspects of the Student Code of Conduct which focuses on Support, Safety, Respect, Inclusion and Confidence. Students, at their developmental level, are able to recognise how they are responsible for their ac1ons and words and how they can also support their peers to further enhance their well-being and awareness of safety in our school environment.
A copy of the Infant Jesus School Student Code of Conduct can be found here.
Life Long Learners As Infant Jesus School is double stream school we are very fortunate that we can provide the opportunity for classes to be reset each year. This annual process supports students to enhance their social and emo1onal skills to enable them to work successfully and coopera1vely with all students in their year level. Each year teachers put a great deal of thought into the development of new classes as it is exci1ng to mee1ng new and different people throughout our lives. As new classes are created each year it is our role as parents and teachers to support our children through change rather than protect them from it. If there is something excep1onal that needs considera1on in this process, we would presume that this has already been communicated with the school previously or at the very latest by the last day of this term. In this annual process we respecmully ask that you do not request specific teachers for your child/children as this is not excep1onal.
Carnivale For the first 1me in 2021, the Catholic Educa1on Carnivale will include three days of lunch1me concerts in the Perth CBD, as well as a marketplace style event on Friday showcasing performance, visual arts, a spring fashion parade and stalls including hospitality, jewellery, homewares, craG and giGs. Join students, members of the public for this colourful, high impact event. The Infant Jesus School Choir will be performing during Carnivale. Please use this link for more informa1on.
Staffing News It is with sadness that Mrs Kerryn McLaughlin has re1red from her posi1on at Infant Jesus School. We are very grateful to Kerryn who has generously and enthusias1cally contributed to the development of our school during more than 25 years as a staff member. Kerryn has been involved with our community for much longer as her children also aCended our school. Our sincerest best wishes are with Kerryn in this next stage of her life. We will be recognising Kerryn at a later date and hope to see in the future for relief. We welcome Miss Anna Piazzola who has been appointed to Infant Jesus School and will be teaching the Year 1W class from the beginning of Term Four. Anna is very much looking forward to joining the Infant Jesus School staff and we hope her 1me with us is both fulfilling and rewarding.
Pre-Kindergarten applica2ons Enrolments are now being taken for siblings and new students wishing to commence PreKindergarten at Infant Jesus School in 2022. Families with children eligible for PreKindergarten in 2022 are required to fill out a Pre-Kindergarten Enrolment Applica1on Form. Infant Jesus School will con1nue to operate half day Pre-Kindergarten groups next year with the days of aCendance being Tuesday and Thursday. Pre-Kindergarten places are limited so it is important that parents within the Infant Jesus School community submit their applica1ons as soon as possible. Forms can be obtained from the office.
From my readings….. Everyday resilience lessons for kids Michael Grose – Paren1ng Ideas Muscles need to be exercised daily if they’re to remain strong, flexible and do their jobs. Resilience is no different. If it's not exercised regularly arrogance will waste away. Resilience is developed through regular daily use. Here are some simple ways you can encourage a child or young person of any age to flex their resilience muscles everyday. Wait un2l meal2me Discourage them from random snacking when they are hungry. Encourage them to wait un1l meal 1me. By tolera1ng minor discomfort such as hunger, thirst or even some worries, kids get the prac1se needed to help them manage bigger future hurdles that may come their way. You can build a child's tolerance of discomfort by encouraging to delay immediate gra1fica1on even just for a few moments. Do more than expected Great sports people rou1nely train more than others and push through mental and physical boundaries. Encourage your child to push through boundaries and do more than expected in small ways. Perhaps they don't just clean their bedroom but 1dy the living room as well. They may aim to shoot ten goals in a row at basketball prac1se but keep going un1l they reach fiGeen. Going past the finish line is wonderful resilience prac1se. What else can you do that would encourage your child to do more than expected on a regular basis? Save pocket money Did you know that when you encourage your child to say some of their pocket money rather than spend it immediately you are teaching them to delay gra1fica1on, an acknowledged resilience aCribute? Asking a child to set aside some pocket money for saving, some for charity and some for spending will help develop a balanced sense of pocket money. It helps if a child can develop their own savings goal and parental sugges1ons can assist. The delay of an immediate reward to achieve a greater or later award needs to be prac1sed if it's to become a part of a child's paCern of behaviour. Make the bed Resilience comes from doing things we don't feel like doing and making a bed is one thing few people enjoy. The daily habit of making a bed (to the best of a child’s ability) is a brilliant discipline to develop, which has the bonus of seJng kids up well for a produc1ve day at school. What other simple habits that fit into the “don't-like-to-do” basket that benefits either your child or others in the family? Help when you don’t feel like it It's easy to help at home when they've had a good day at school or the weather is fine. It's much more difficult to step up and help set the table, pull out the rubbish or hear a sibling read when they've had a bad day at school or the weather is s1nking hot. The seemingly small act of s1cking to commitments help develop discipline and conscien1ousness that contributes to a sense of resilience.
Smile when you don’t feel happy Feelings may be difficult to manage, but behaviour is a choice. Encourage kids to choose happy, or at least act happy by smiling rather than puJng on a grumpy face. The brilliant thing about this strategy is that smiling changes their mood so that they begin to experience pleasant memories. It’s the small, everyday behaviours we encourage in kids that had the greatest impact on their behaviour, well being and resilience.
Prayer This weekend the Catholic Church in Australia will mark Safeguarding Sunday on 12 September. This has previously been known as Child Protec1on Sunday, but the Bishops Conference approved the change of name late last year to beCer reflect the Church’s policies and protocols to protect and support children and adults at risk. The Perth Archdiocese has been celebra1ng Na2onal Child Protec2on Week this week and will acknowledge Sunday 12 September as Safeguarding Sunday to align with other Catholic Dioceses in Australia. The following prayer will be shared in all parishes this weekend. Gracious God, you love and care for all of your children, especially the smallest and most vulnerable. We entrust to you the lives of children and adults at risk who have been sexually abused, and whose trust and innocence have been destroyed. Help us to hear their cries of pain and to take responsibility for those whose lives have been broken. Help us to recognise the hurt felt by those wounded by abuse, and the failure to be heard. We pray that with the help of your grace communi1es and families will find understanding and support, so that now and in the future their wounds may be healed and they may find las1ng peace. Let your grace and love fall gently now upon our children and adults at risk, giving them the inner strength, peace and resilience to seek out assistance when required. We ask this prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen Have a wonderful week, Clare Moffat Principal

We Are Called Season for Crea+on 2021 The Church begins the annual Season of Crea7on on 1 September, Pope Francis is invi7ng everyone to pray for “an environmentally sustainable lifestyle”.
Pope Francis urges us to turn to Christ in our troubles and dream new things – to face new social, economic and ecological reali7es with prayers of hope for our journey. In the Pope’s video for the month of September, he held up the example of young people who are environmentally conscious. “It makes me very happy to see that young people have the courage to undertake projects for environmental and social improvement, since the two go together,” he said. Pope Francis called on everyone to look toward young people and their commitment to their own future.
“Let us pray that we all will make courageous choices, the choices necessary for a simple and environmentally sustainable lifestyle, taking inspira7on from our young people who are resolutely commiKed to this,” he said. To celebrate the Season for Crea7on, Francis from Catholic Mission visited our Year Six students today to present them with a prayer plant and discuss how they can make a difference in the world. This plant has been placed in the school hall, as a prayer focus to remind us to pray to God for awareness on how we can help the environment. During this season, students are encouraged to write prayers, and pray for crea7on. We can also remember about ways we can make a difference in the world by changing our habits. These acts of love can show our respect for crea7on and show stewardship of the world for future genera7ons.
Ways Kids Can Help Save The Environment • • • • • • • •
Use a reusable water container. Recycle or upcycle paper. Turn off the lights. Unplug chargers to save electricity. Turn off taps to save. Donate toys and clothes. Help recycle cans and plas7c boKles. Learn to cook fun, plant based meals.
Book Week 2021 Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds Our Book Week Celebra4ons have been a huge success. The children have enjoyed the Book Week fair, compe44ons in the library and the book parade. Everyone was highly entertained by the fabulous costumes the children (and the teachers) wore at the Book Parade Assembly. Well done to all the family members who created them. A big thank you to the Jupp, Radacic, TuK and Rapy families for either dona4ng a book from the fair to our Library or their 4me to help make the Book Fair such a success. The commission raised from purchases will build upon our wonderful library collec4on. Jenny Houwen
Health News Health How to live a healthy, safe and posi4ve life has been the common conversa4on during health classes at Infant Jesus School.
The Year One students have explored how to be safe passengers and pedestrians in their commute to school. The Year Two students have explored five aspects of a healthy lifestyle; regular exercise, healthy ea4ng, adequate sleep, mindfulness and posi4ve mental health ac4vi4es. The Year Three students have explored the benefits of exercising in natural environments. The Year Four students have focussed on the truth behind junk food adver4sements. The strategies and tac4cs used in these adver4sements will be u4lised by the students to create their own healthy ea4ng adver4sements. The Year Five students have decoded food labels in order to make healthier choices. The Year Six students are prac4sing controlling their emo4ons so that they can make appropriate and posi4ve decisions.
This week, students will step away from their regular scheduled health ac4vi4es and will complete

Choir
Musical Theatre Excursion Our IJS Choir had the opportunity to go watch Mercedes’ College produc:on Annie at the Regal Theatre on the 29th July 2021. The students had a fabulous :me singing along to the songs like “Tomorrow” and “Hard knock Life”. They even managed to meet some of the actors as they exited the theatre. This rich musical experience offered an inspira:on to students who would like to venture in the performing arts and #expectgreaOhings.
Choir
Catholic Performing Arts On the 26 August 2021, our IJS Choir performed brilliantly at the Catholic Performing Arts held at the Vasto Club. They sang “I see a Hero” and “Rhythm of Life”, which were a contrast in both dynamics and interpreta:on. The choir successfully achieved a cer:ficate of Excellence in their results and they are commended for their commitment to prac:ses and ability to perform confidently on their own. I am so proud of your achievement and you are all stars!
i-Perform
i-Perform The most recent i-Perform was held in the hall on the 3rd of September 2021. The students performed on stage by re-telling bed?me stories at our “Infant Jesus Sleepover”. The scene started off with an impressive ‘pillow fight’ from some of the Year Three actors and were quickly followed on by students in Year One that told the story of the “Bear who lost his tail”. They then sang and danced to the Rachel PlaOen’s “Fight Song” In Year Two, students performed the story “The Fox and the Crane” expressively with their props and ac?ons. They danced to the song famously called “What does the Fox Say?” The Year Three students also had a brilliant performance of “Monkey, a Trickster Tale” where Monkey plays tricks on his good friend Crocodile who ended up having a mouthful of mangoes while Monkey chaOered away in the trees. The performance ended on a high note in which all i-Perform performers danced to “Celebrate”. It’s always a good ?me with i-Perform!
Music
Music Classes In music, we have been busy exploring pitch, rhythm and music composi9on all across the years. In Pre-Primary, we have been listening to a variety or concertos and are expressing our ideas of the music through art. They have also been learning about “Bickle Bockle” that reinforces their knowledge of rhythms and beats. The Year One and Two students are learning a variety of new rhythms and also composing their own songs using the knowledge of rhythm and pitch. They have enjoyed performing in front of their friends. The Year Threes have significantly improved their ability to play the recorder. Some students have reached their black belt that has developed musicianship skills as well as persistence with handwork and prac9ce. The Year Fours were introduced the ‘C Posi9on’ on the keyboard and for some, reinforcing their idea of finger posi9on on the keyboard. Year Fives have been given the opportunity to play on the Ukuleles while the Sixes have also been focussing on an advanced rhythm and pitch whereby they compose music based on the pentatonic scale influenced by Asian Music.

Children playing the educa.on version of Minecra( can learn a variety of coding, math, and problem-solving skills. They also get lessons in digital ci.zenship. Rather than focusing on game-play,
students par.cipate in projectbased learning tutorials and games. Minecra( Edu allows teachers to view where all their students are in the world that's been created, and allow them to turn on and off different blocks. There’s also a code builder and agent mode, where students can create code and then the agent executes that code. Educators can also download various lesson plans. Across our school teachers have completed training in how to successfully implement Minecra( Edu into their teaching programs. Students have recreated landmarks in
HASS, built scenes based on descrip.ons from novels in English, created arrays and perimeter and area in Maths and even made religious icons. Students have then explained their learning by crea.ng ‘walkthroughs’ of these crea.ons. Check out some of their fabulous work!
