From the Principal Dear Parents The weeks have flown by this term and so have the many school celebra8ons and ac8vi8es including Confirma8on last week, the Fac8on Cross Country yesterday and and assembly last week and this week. Your involvement strengthens the partnership between home and school and, as research informs us, enables children to experience greater success in all areas of the curriculum.

One of the ways that success and progress is recognised, reported and documented in in the Semester Report, for Pre-Primary to Year Six. Teachers and staff, with their exper8se and dedica8on, also share the progress of all students in many other ways throughout the year including a porIolio, mee8ngs and children sharing their work and achievements through parent visits to the classrooms.

In all aspects of school and learning, making progress and experiencing success is achieved through engagement and effort. The thorough planning of the teachers and staff and the support from home enables all children to use their giKs, talents and abili8es to take risks, to improve and to flourish.

Fac8on Cross Country Carnival

School Curriculum Over the next few weeks, I will be reading every student’s Semester One report. I look forward to seeing the effort and improvement by individual students and reading the comments that teachers make about their performance and the achievement of the various outcomes. The following informa8on provides further details about the curriculum within Catholic schools, and ways parents can support their children throughout their schooling.

As has been highlighted many 8mes before, collabora8on between home and school is vital in providing our students at Infant Jesus School with the best possible educa8onal advantages and it is an area that we are always endeavouring to improve.

The curriculum is the program of teaching and learning that leads to desired educa8onal outcomes. Catholic schools follow the same curriculum as government schools; however, there is a religious dimension in everything that is taught in a Catholic school. This creates the addi8onal and most important learning area of Religious Educa8on.

How is the Curriculum Organised?

Infant Jesus School implements the Kindergarten to Year 10 Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Guidelines to meet the learning needs of all students. The Western Australian Curriculum is based on the Australian Curriculum.

It has been designed to meet the specific needs of students in Western Australia. Subjects are grouped in key learning areas and teachers within our Catholic schools refer to the Western Australian Curriculum (English, Mathema8cs, Science, Humani8es and Social Sciences,

Technologies, Health and Physical Educa8on, The Arts and Languages) and other documents to develop their teaching programs. Schools and teachers are responsible for organising student learning. To effec8vely deliver the curriculum, teachers respond to their students’ needs and interests, which inform their approach to teaching, learning and assessment.

How does the PrePrimary to Year 10 curriculum work?

Schools use the Western Australian curriculum for PrePrimary to Year 10 to: • plan student learning programs, • assess student progress, and • report student achievement to parents.

The Western Australian Curriculum outlines the content for students to be taught each year. It is designed to be coherent and comprehensive.

Achievement standards describe expected student performance in rela8on to the curriculum content for each year level.

The curriculum is organised into nine learning areas, which includes Religious Educa8on. Each learning area contains a year-level syllabus. This syllabus includes a year-level descrip8on, specific curriculum content and the Achievement Standard for each year of schooling, from Pre-Primary to Year 10.

Outcomes Subjects and courses taught in schools today are outcomes based; that is, they are given direc8on by clear descrip8ons of what students should know, understand and value and be able to do as a result of the learning experience provided by the teachers at the school.

Outcomes are explicit statements of what students must demonstrate to show they have achieved the

required knowledge and skills. Each learning area lists specific outcomes that students must cover over the years of K – 12. Teachers then use a range of fair, valid, explicit and comprehensive assessment processes to inform and evaluate the progress of student learning against the outcome prescribed for the par-cular learning area. This is how the student’s achievement levels are determined for each learning area. Teachers also make comments on the effort a child has applied to their learning for a par8cular learning area.

Professional Development Day The focus of the Professional Development Day on Friday 3 June 2022 was ‘Understanding the Mass’.

During this presenta8on staff gained a deeper understanding of various aspects of the Mass, how Eucharist assists us in sharing the Good News and how we can further engage the school community in more prayerful and reflec8ve ways. As staff deepen their faith knowledge they then support and share this knowledge and contribute to enhancing the faith journey of everyone in our school community.

Leaders as Learners ‘The power of collec8ve capacity is that it enables ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things. – for two reasons. One is that knowledge about effec8ve prac8ce becomes more widely available and accessible on a daily basis. The second reason is more powerful s8ll – working together generates commitment.’ Michael Fullan (McKinsey & Company Report).

Each child at Infant Jesus School, is encouraged to be a global ci8zen, who understands their ac8ons contribute to building their community’s values and prac8ces. The children have opportuni8es to develop sustainable habits and an apprecia8on for our world. Social jus8ce is promoted throughout the school and all of the children are encouraged to share their giKs and talents with the community.

Each day we provide opportuni8es to empower all students to be leaders as demonstrated through Handy helpers in Kindy who are the leaders for the day. They help each other work together by assis8ng everyone to pack away and they also lead the line when it is their turn.

Independence and problem solving skills are also fostered in the students which includes providing encouragement when trying something that has been challenging eg. opening individual food packages at recess.

Peer demonstra8ons in Year One where the students who the students who had used clips showed their classmates how to use the App and complete the task.

Through peer support, turn taking and working collabora8vely in Technologies in Year Two students worked successfully in groups to code the Dash robots.

In prepara8on for their assembly the Year Threes have been leaders in prac8sing, rehearsing and improving their skits and assis8ng their classmates on the stage.

In small group work students in Year Four are given a specific leadership role which includes taking responsibility for being the scribe, material collector or presenter. Year Four also reflect on their work and how they can consistently achieve their best.

The Year Sixes have shown leadership through their Ministry Work – examples from this week include assis8ng at Cross Country, presen8ng at the School Assembly, taking photos for this newsleher, assis8ng with Lifelink ac8vi8es for those in need, organising the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal, Sor8ng out the juice boxes for recycling.

Students have been learning from their peers during Chinese lessons when they demonstrate conversa8ons on the current topic which allows the class to consolidate and strengthen their individual understanding.

The making of music using instruments and giving students the responsibility of taking care of the instruments during Music.

Children are also required to play instruments appropriately which also gives them accountability. !

Bye par8cipa8ng in modified games in Physical EducaOon where Year 4, 5 and 6 students demonstrate leadership by showing other students how to play and how to follow the rules.

FacOon Cross Country Yesterday we held the Fac:on Cross Country Carnival at Lightning Park. We were fortunate that the weather was much milder than last week.

During the carnival all children demonstrated fantas8c great sportsmanship and very much enjoyed par8cipa8ng in this event. The Year Six Wellness Ministry were fantas8c and very enthusias8cally assisted all the runners in every race.

Sincere thanks to Mrs Jenkins who worked 8relessly in reorganising and co-ordina8ng every aspect of the carnival. Mrs Jenkins and Miss Witkowski have also very generously given of their 8me and talents to provide i-Run to further support and encourage all students to have-ago at running.

We also recognise and thank all the staff who volunteered their 8me very early yesterday morning to help with sefng up for the carnival at Lightning Park. A very special thank you also to the parents who came to assist. Your support is greatly appreciated and needed to ensure that events such as these can take place.

Lifelink Lifelink Day was officially launched on Wednesday 8 June 2022 via a webcast. On this day both Archbishop Timothy Costelloe and Auxillary Bishop Don Sproxton presented informa8on about the work of Lifelink in the Perth Archdiocese.

The LifeLink Day Schools Ini8a8ve was established in 1999 to; • Promote understanding of the Church's response to people in need within the community; • Ins8l in Catholic students ahending Archdiocesan Schools, a sense of responsibility for caring for those less fortunate; • Provide educa8on and informa8on of the work the LifeLink social service agencies - iden8tywa, The Shopfront, Centrecare Inc, Catholic Ministry for People who are Deaf and Hearing Impaired, Catholic Outreach, Emmanuel Centre, Daydawn Advocacy Centre, Emmaus Community, Centacare Emplyment and Training and Samaritan Projects which help many thousands of Western Australians in need each year.

• Encourage a "prac8cal demonstra8on of Faith" by asking students, teachers and schools to organise a special fundraising event for LifeLink Day, with the proceeds aiding people in real need within the community. At Infant Jesus School our "prac8cal demonstra8on of Faith" will take place on Friday 24 June 2022 with a Crazy Hair Day. We look forward to your dona8ons on Friday 24 June 2022.

Staffing As a community we welcome Brother Ad who has recently arrived in the Infant Jesus Parish from the Eastern States. He has visited the school, met the Year 6 students during their Confirma8on and met the staff.

Welcome We welcome Mrs Lucia Siciliano who has been appointed to Infant Jesus School in the role of Administra8on Officer. Lucy will be comple8ng some orienta8on during the final weeks of this term. Lucy is very excited and looking forward to joining staff and the Infant Jesus School community. We hope Lucy’s 8me here is both fulfilling and very rewarding.

Kindergarten 2023 – ApplicaOons are Now Due Enrolments are now being taken for siblings and new students wishing to commence Kindergarten at Infant Jesus School in 2023. Families with children eligible for Kindergarten in 2023 (born from July 2018 to June 2019) are required to fill out an Infant Jesus School Applica8on Form.

Infant Jesus School will con8nue to operate two concurrent Kindergarten groups next year with the days of ahendance being Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Kindergarten places are limited, so it is important that parents within the Infant Jesus School community submit their applica8ons as soon as possible. Forms can be obtained from the office.

Pre-Kindergarten 2022 The Pre-Kindergarten children are now ahending a full day program every Tuesday for the remainder of the year. The half-day program con8nues unchanged and takes place each Thursday morning.

From my readings Teaching kids to be kind Rachel Tomlinson – Paren8ng Ideas Judgement and cri8cism are the stock in trade for many people in today’s fast-paced world. In our playgrounds and parks, children oKen act cruelly – or are simply uninterested in how other people feel. Lihle kids, big kids, and even adults can respond reac8vely and unthinkingly, or some8mes inten8onally, with unkindness.

Although being unkind is nothing new (it’s happened from the beginning of humanity), technology is enabling cruelty in faster, easier, anonymous ways. Technology is also making it hard for our kids to develop skills to delay gra8fica8on. Exercising impulse control – self regula8on – is trickier because wai8ng isn’t needed.

These things combine to make it increasingly hard to be a compassionate and kind person, someone who considers the needs of others rather than ac8ng out of self-interest. It demands inten8on and commitment.

The helper’s high Our brains release "feelgood" chemicals (like oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins) which fight stress and make us feel happy when we engage in, or even witness, acts of kindness. It’s called the “helper’s high” and it’s our brains' way of rewarding us for doing good, making us want to repeat the behaviour to get the same good feeling again. Not only does being kind feel good, but it generally keeps us safe because it makes us more likely to be accepted by social groups. It builds social capital when we are considerate of the needs of others.

Create opportuni:es for kindness Even though they are hardwired for kindness we s8ll need to create opportuni8es for our kids to engage in acts of kindness. We also need them to know what it feels like to have someone treat them kindly (so they know what behaviours to copy, and why kindness is important).

So how can you help them?

Model kindness Show your children how you treat others kindly. Hold open doors for people, put trolleys back that are in the middle of the car park, drop a meal to a sick family member, donate old towels to an animal shelter, let someone in when traffic is heavy. They don’t have to be grand gestures, just small and gentle ways of considering the needs of others.

Use kind language Consider how you speak to your child and what you say when you speak. Ask how you speak about others (and yourself). Our kids use our behaviour as templates for how they should act. So let them see your compassion shine through for those around you. Be kind as you listen. Be kind as you talk. Say kind things.

Encourage helping Is one child great at maths and their younger sibling isn’t? Invite them to teach them or guide them through their homework. Ask them to show you how to play their favourite video game. If they are great at cooking, ask them to help you prepare dinner. Having them involved in prosocial ways gives them a helper’s high.

Build their emo:onal intelligence Kids who struggle to regulate and manage their emo8ons will find it harder to treat others with compassion. An essen8al part of teaching kids to be kind centres on teaching them to manage challenging emo8ons, and giving them coping strategies to navigate their way through.

Teach them the words for feelings. Without the right words to share how they feel it can leave kids confused, fearful and frustrated…which only serves to make their big feelings more intense. When you see them experiencing a feeling, name it for them: “I can see that made you so mad”, “I wonder if you felt sad when your friend leK you out”.

Help them iden8fy when they are escala8ng, but don’t try and reason with them when they are in the “red zone” – we cannot reason with them at this stage as they are in the emo8onal part of the brain (mid brain) not the part that lets them be logical (pre-frontal cortex). Discuss strategies and prac8ce when they feel calm. Get them doing things like squeezing play dough, talking about how they feel, going for a run, switching on music that makes them feel good, drawing or wri8ng stuff down.

When you do this, you’re being kind, teaching kindness, and helping them be kind to themselves.

In closing Encouraging kids to be kind is essen8al in helping them avoid seeking instant gra8fica8on, ego-centric solu8ons, or being cruel. When people are empathic and kind they are more likely to experience beher overall wellbeing, this is in part due to the helper’s high, but also because they feel fulfilled and tend to have beher quality rela8onships. Kindness is cool!

Prayer Last week was the official launch of Lifelink 2022. We pray for all those in need and all those supported through the dona8ons and work of Lifelink.

We Are Called Meet Br Ad! Late last month, Infant Jesus Parish welcomed Br Adalbert who is a deacon to the community. He hopes to be ordained in the coming year.

Br Ad is a transiAonal deacon and a seminarian, student in the last phase of training for the Catholic priesthood. ABer being a deacon for a year, they’re ordained a priest by the bishop.

ABer meeAng the Year Sixes last week, we discovered some interesAng facts about Br Ad. His favourite soccer player is Messi.

He keeps fit by boxing.

Br Ad grew up in Queensland.

Prior to joining the seminary, he was studying Medicine.

He was born in the Phillipines.

[Winter Appeal] Each of us has the power to make a positive difference to the world we live in and the lives of others. In our neighbourhood and community there are many reasons and people to help. One way we can help with supporting the St Vincent de Paul Society’s Winter Appeal. This will enable Vinnies to continue providing vital services to those they assist and supporting people in our community to have a brighter future.

Did you know that more than 25,000 children are without a home in Australia today? It’s expected that this number has grown since the beginning of the pandemic last year.

Two-thirds of these children are under 12 years of age.

Our support of the Vinnies Winter Appeal means Vinnies can help find children and others in our community, a safe and permanent home and experience a bit of joy, dignity, and hope.

Year 3

Frac%on Smar%es!

The Year 3 students have been busy learning about frac7ons in Mathema7cs.

They have learned that the bo;om number in a frac7on is called the 'denominator'. This tells you how many parts a whole is broken into. The top number in a frac7on in called the 'numerator'.

This number indicates how many we are focusing on or talking about. The students developed their understanding of frac7ons in a fun maths ac7vity using "Smar7es". They had to count each colour in their packet and indicate the frac7on that represents the colour. They then got to eat their Smar7es as a reward!

Class News Kindy Le#ers and Sounds In Kindy we have been learning all about the le7ers s, a, t, p, i and n. We have prac=sed our le7er forma=ons and learnt the sounds that each of the le7ers make.

We’ve made the le7ers in shaving cream, we have traced the le7er shapes with jewels and rocks, we made yummy popcorn to help us prac=ce the p sound, went fishing for the le7er s and we made necklaces for the n sound. It has been lots of fun learning about them.

Did you know that we can make words from these sounds? We have been making words like sat, sit, in and pat.

Healthy Ea*ng News

The Infant Jesus School community is pu;ng a spotlight on healthy ea*ng. Students have dedicated ea*ng *me at recess and lunch, and we are endeavouring to maximise the healthiness of that ea*ng *me. But we need your help!

Our current focus is on ea*ng a rainbow!

This fortnight we challenge the Infant Jesus students to crunch on a rainbow of different fruit and vegetables. Each day will have a different colour focus.

Monday is for red fruit and vegetables. Add some red capsicum, strawberries, red apple or cherry tomatoes to your child’s lunch box so they can get an*oxidants to help reduce the risk of heart disease and cancers.

Tuesday is yellow/orange day. Give your child some carrots, corn spears, yellow capsicum or an orange to help to protect their eye health.

Wednesday equals green day. This day is for crunching on pears, peas, broccoli, cucumber and celery.

Thursday is for purple/blue fruit and vegetables which protect cells from damage. Pack and eat blueberries, purple grapes, purple carrots and plums.

The power of the white fruit and vegetable, such as potatoes, cauliflower and Nashi pears, are to be eaten on Friday!

2. You have ethical and legal obliga7ons to treat personal informa7on as confiden7al. You protect the privacy of each member of the school community by trea7ng the informa7on gained in the rela7onship as confiden7al, restric7ng its use and disclosure to the purposes defined in your school Privacy Policy.

3. If a third party asks for access to personal informa7on, you must take reasonable steps to confirm the iden7ty of the third party, and that it is lawful to disclose the informa7on to them. You must inform the member of the school community that you have disclosed their personal informa7on unless you are sa7sfied that there are legal reasons for not doing so.

4. You seek advice if you iden7fy a conflict between protec7ng personal informa7on and any resul7ng risk to the safety and well-being of a student.

5. You create and keep accurate records of conversa7ons about significant decisions involving the safety and well-being of students.

Communica)on Safety Feature in iOS15 The Apple Messenger app now includes tools that warn children and provide helpful resources if they receive or a8empt to send photos that may contain nudity. If the feature is turned on and ‘Messages’ detects that a child receives or is a8emp>ng to send this type of photo, Messages blurs the photo before it's viewed on your child's device and provides guidance and age-appropriate resources to help them make a safe choice, including contac>ng someone they trust if they choose to. The photo is not sent to Apple or any other third party.

Turn on communica)on safety in Screen Time se7ngs You can turn on communica>on safety at any >me in Screen Time seFngs for your child's account.

1. On your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, go to SeFngs > Screen Time. On a Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Screen Time. (If you haven't already turned on Screen Time, use parental controls to turn it on.)

2. Tap the name of a child in your family group.

3. Then, tap Communica>on Safety and tap Con>nue.

4. Turn on Check for Sensi>ve Photos. You may need to enter the Screen Time passcode for the device.

5. You can turn off communica>on safety for your child at any >me in Screen Time seFngs.

LifeLink Day On Friday 24 June children from Kindy- Year Six are invited to come to school with crazy hair to recognise the contribu>on of LifeLink Agencies in our community. Children are asked to make a gold coin dona>on to Lifelink on this day which will support agencies such as Shopfront, Catholic Ministry for People Who Are Deaf or Hearing Impaired, Centacare, The Emmaus Community and many more.

Pre-loved Uniforms Did you know Infant Jesus has a Facebook page for selling or buying your second hand uniforms called: “IJS 2nd Hand School Uniform Shop”.

Sellers, please remember you can only sell the current uniform with the correct logo. If you have any old unused uniforms, bring them to school and place them in the dona>on bins at the front of the school (near the gate). They will be given to a charity for reuse in a primary school overseas. We will be clearing out the lost property box during week 10, so if your child is missing an item of clothing, please check the lost property box as soon as possible.

Car Bay Raffle Keep an eye out on QuickCliq for raffle >ckets going on sale soon for your chance to win the pres>ge parking bay in the admin carpark for the whole of Term 3.

Recess at the Canteen: On Wednesday 22 June the P&F will be selling cheesies for $2 each at the canteen during recess only. Order forms will be given out by your class teacher and the order and money must be in by Tuesday 21 June.

There will be vegemite and cheese and plain cheesies available.

Keyed Up Music Keyed Up Music will be teaching guitar, keyboard, violin, woodwind, voice, and drum lessons in Term 3 during and a_er school.
